This is why i always stick with valve servers, no ads, no admins, no plugins, no bots, no obnoxious server advertising. Just regular ol' tf2. Just the way i like it.

First time I saw those bots that appear to be real people on the scoreboard, it really freaked me out. I really thought I had joined a server with 23 people, none of whom had managed in six years to obtain a single hat or misc, and all of whom run backwards and stare at you. Bots are fuckin creepy man.
It gives you that feeling that you're alone and not alone at the same time...

I'm surprised that you didn't talk about NighTeam. Their premium. God damn. You spend money to win. When you "donate" you get 2x move speed, infinitely regenerating overheal, extra damage- oh. You don't actually pay. You just get the 15 minute demo which lasts for 5 hours.

These problems could have been solved if servers had a reputation system or if Quickplay was stricter about its requirements for a good vanilla experience.
I never tend to have ads on a server. Skial servers usually have a good latency and no ads you have to sit through. But I think we can all agree that Valve servers are the best.
Not really, you'll now have to wait 30 minutes to get into one that is only 30 secs remaining or has already ended (Based on real stories)

People would be surprised with the level of skill that you find on Valve servers.
True, once in a blue moon, the players align and the most intense matches in existence happen.
My two best Valve matches were both on Viaduct. I was a Soldier in one and a Medic in the other. The level of teamwork was truly astounding.
It all depends on how many cosmetics the players are wearing (and whether or not they're usable in crafting)

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who think hats equals skill. However, I'm still saying that cosmetic items speak volumes of their wearer's hours spent in the game, depending how much money they've spent in the Mann Co. store and the community market.
I had an amazing match on Frontier once. I was on RED, and one of the guys on BLU was being a huge a**hole, so when the cart was almost at the end, you can imagine how intense it got for me trying to beat this guy. So I played as Demoman, and completely dominated the entire BLU team before they could win. It was so satisfying. :) So yeah, Valve servers can be really good.

Skial doesn't like it though, they'll warn you that you're the first in line to get kicked if someone has a reserved spot. But then again, I've never, ever been kicked and I don't know if anyone actually reserves spots.

Quit being silly, STAR_. Everyone knows that TF2's main focus is to be the best hat simulator out there.
Back when the Quick-Fix couldn't overheal, I joined some random server and equipped the Fix. A message akin to a vote menu popped up, saying that the Fix was shit and if I wanted to help my team I should change it.
I mean, I know the Fix WAS shit back then, but geez, this is a pub server, not competitive. Let me use what I want and don't be obnoxious about it.

It's gotten so bad lately, I actually have unblacklisted and played Skial servers, which I used to consider part of the bottom of the barrel. :(
I used to consider Skial servers to be awful, until I realized I was just getting them mixed up with Saigns servers.
There is honestly nothing wrong with Skial servers, their ads are very short and easily ignored if you disable HTML, there's never any fake-client bots, no premium buffs besides reserved slots (never an issue), and allows you to set your team preference incase of a scramble.
It's 2023 and some community servers still have stealthy bots, pretending to be real people. It sucks so much, it's really more fun to play with like, three guys, than even with the finest bots.

Bishop Alexander skial tends to give you teh most minimum levels of bs and in terms of quality are about third/second (with valve being first of course).

Aickavon the Techpriest most skial servers fit the description you gave. the others actually are rather fond of banning people because, well why not, right? Also, they're full of people tryharding so much that if you make one mistake half your team is yelling at you for "destroying their chances of winning" and the other team is taunting you in chat.
Tom Jackal well there are three types of admins. The admins who are actually good and pay attention and give reasonable bans and punishments to players who are breaking the rules (spawn camping, hacking, or verbal abuse/spamming).
There are admins that aren't good or bad, they tend to be shy about making any decision and try to 'investigate' before doing anything, these admins usually really need to be pushed in order to ban, but at least you won't get an unexpected ban from them.
Then there are admins who will ban and ruin fun. Y'know, the admins that go into a hard game that's being fought fair and square, and start using administrative powers to kill everyone without any levels of fun for either side (if I'm dying or not getting any kills, my funness level drops no matter what team I'm on). These admins may not always use admin powers to win but they are known to ban people based on the assumption that they are hacking (which pretty much means, if you're good at the game, you're gone, this is particularly heavy on pyros who know how to airblast, and snipers who can manage the difficult task of point and click.)
These three admins are on every server group, skial is no exception to this... the problem isn't skial itself it's just... people. Things happen and skial is so big that unless a collective people report and complain to skial's owners and not youtube, then skial can't really do anything that they are not aware of.
However, I have found that skial... tends to be very minimum on admin abuse (in comparison to others) I understand that it's not perfect, but it's by far one of the better options compared to say... ANY SERVER WITH BOTS
But then there's Valve servers, which I've described, where the only bans are VAC bans, which are usually pretty accurate; they never ban someone who isn't hacking, but you might see one or two hackers on Valve servers a year, if you're playing every day.

DoubleJ Balance shmalance! My team still wins plenty of games with instant respawn enabled. Either because red team sucks or I've been playing tf2 for WAY too long (1,965 hours as of right now :P).
Doesn't matter how good the defensive team is; if you use teamwork like I do with my group of players/friends, than you can accomplish anything. You just have to be optimistic.

No because people would spam that everywhere on the normal servers like the scramble teams option.
They should make just a few servers (like maybe 15-20 that host 24 players) and see how it goes.
Most of my friends including myself ONLY play instant respawn. Because let's face it; nobody wants to waste their real life waiting around for shit to happen :P
People already spend about 1/7 to 1/8 of their lifespan simply waiting for things to happen.
I stick to one server for killing, one server for jumping, and one server for surfing. It makes it much easier to make sure I play on ones that I like.

Seriously though, Valve servers are probably the best bet. And rocketblast if you happen to have a good connection.
I love Rocketblast's servers. They almost always have players on them, and the community is good. No ads, no shit. And they are hosted pretty close to where I live, so I almost never have a ping above 20. It's pretty awesome.
hah! Nevermind trying to find a server that meets these qualifications that also plays highlander. Or uses custom maps. OR USES FUCKING MAP ROTATION. YOU WILL PLAY THE SAME 5 PAYLOAD MAPS FOREVER AND EVER.

Valve servers are honestly the best for just playing tf2. They have no ads, no bots, and while the skill level may be low, sometimes you just need to play the video games.

Disable HTML MOTD, it'll get rid of 90% of the Ads and the other 10% are Servers that'll kick you for having HTML MOTD disabled, so obviously those are servers not worth playing on.
My philosophy towards ads on TF2 is that there should be none. We came here to PLAY A GAME, not sit here for 30 seconds staring at a blank screen...If you need money to run a server, get a fucking job, don't take the fun out of the game....
Nothing wrong with using valves servers, they're the fastest and easiest way to just get in a game. Only issue I have is the map rotations, where they have to include the fairly bad maps (cp_fastlane is a personal gripe) but even then, you can just find one playing a better map at the time. (cp_process is top notch for valve's lineup)

I still remember when i played TF2 on a clan server... Our daily message was basically "Rules, and admin info" no ads, no plugins, no "OMFGZ RANDUM GIVAWAWYS!!!"
Those were good days.. .Then the clan slowly stopped playing and we all went our different ways.

The clan still exists, but almost nobody plays TF2, and nearly everybody plays their own games.
I was a mod for ElitePowered, then an admin for GottamPootis, and then the founder of Gamerland: Source. I may have been part of the problem a little, but the players still had a lot of fun on GP and GLS.
Imagine if he ended up in Jiggly's Funhouse.
As soon as i saw the title i knew what this was going to be, I was right. Thank god someone addresses it. I have a few servers I frequent without adds or bots and thats great, but they tend to fill up pretty fast once the US people start to join. I'd rather keep my auto retry on than searching for a decent new server, the search gets so frustrating.

And here I thought I might be one of the only players to have clocked a good amount of hours in, but still prefer a Valve server.
Fortunately, living in Australia usually provides some nice servers that tend to have good communities and no bot bullshit. MOTD ads are still fucking there though.
I played on a Valve server once. My computer glitched on map switch forcing me to restart it, and every match I had after that was complete shit.
All in all, I'd say it was an ok day.

Oh no, I had fun when I was IN the Valve server (It's the most wonder concoction of stupidity I've seen, and great to just fuck around in), but it cursed me to have no fun after that.
I go in them in the interest of comedy rather than challenge.
***** skillful players are fun to play with, but tf2 isn't exclusively for skilled people. I myself am into the competitive scene and i think that it's basically two different worlds, one with competitive play, and one to just fuck around and have a good time. that's part of the beauty of tf2, where in games like csgo, you either play on like, surf maps or competitive. not saying it's a bad game though

I can't believe people are kissing ass and defending Pinion and Ads in general. If you can't run a server then don't fucking run a server. Ads ruin people's fun in playing TF2. Half the time they hold Engineers and Medics back at the beginning of round in set-up phase, and have been known to crash people's games. If Pinion is so fucking vital to a server's survival then how was it that we had a great many servers prior to it coming to life? Fuck Pinion. Fuck it right to the ground.
I was playing on a Pinion Server once when the ad started playing IN THE MIDDLE OF GAMEPLAY. Blue Team all got frozen while going to the final capture point in Area 3 of DustBowl, and then when the ad finished we were all back in spawn since Red didn't get the ad.

Who designs those ads? Like seriously. What are they even thinking? "Ah, let's make those ads as loud, as repetitive and annoying as possible so that the everyone who !listens! to it at least once, is going to hate the game-name mentioned in the ad forever".

In France we get ads on TF2 about laundry chemicals
Saigns servers. With premiums. Everywhere. Then I find a "Vanilla" server, with "VANILLA" in the name, premium. Hate that thing. And then bots too, yeah. By premium, I mean that plugin which makes ANYBODY, for 15 minutes, go fast as a scout, every kills gives 25hp, infinite ammo, and lods of bullshit. Also you forgot to speak about Audio ads, random sounds when you dont close the ads properly and leave MOTD on.
Welcome to Saigns! We essentially give out hacks to players on our servers who pay us money! It's great!

No matter where you go, a good portion of servers are going to have ads. I just learn to deal with it if the server is good.
Sometimes there's even that rare coincidence that the server is kina shitty, but the community of players that join everyday are fun to talk to.
Uses quickplay, nothing but bots, foreshadowing in its most ominous form.
Recently Valve stopped HTML MOTDs appearing if you join a server via quickplay. Made TF2 servers seem 31% better than before.

You can blacklist the advertisements similar to when using Adblock pro so you never get that shit. There's also a bot blacklist somewhere on valve forums. I want to play some no-plugins server without it being a 23/24 player 2fort but every fucking server I get is either bots, game mode mod, or trading/achievement which also has bots for no reason.

Haha, no. Skial enable pinion by making use of their "service" and they have premium plugins which cause unsightly visual glitches. Their Koth communities are rather terrible as they spend more time shitting on Engineers who are positively contributing to the teams success than they do playing.
Medibro Dont know which maps do you play in a skial server but i almost always go to dustbowl 24/7 , the ad lasts 2-3 seconds , appears like every 4 rounds and i barely hear anything from it.

The worst server community you can have: Servers with unfair advantages when you're premium. Infinite ammo, infinite crits, overheal, regen, octa-jumping. Bullshit.
Yesterday I just peacefully played tf2 when suddenly I heard the ad starting in the background. In the MIDDLE OF THE GAME. It almost blasted my headphones off because it was so loud.

I mostly just go to one of a couple of different pony servers. They have fairly good players, no ads, and the best part: a JUKEBOX!
Love me that jukebox. The Ponyfortress2 servers won me over with that feature.

The only problem with Valve servers is that there's a good chance of a hacker on there and there's nothing anyone can really do about it if they have a plugin that changes their name every five seconds. And I don't mean aimbotting, I pretty much mean 2 Fast 2 Furious Heavies, which might actually be one of the most hilarious things to see.
The sad part is this video is pretty much what a lot of tf2 has become now which can get pretty annoying having to spend 20 minutes to find a server then if just being filled with bots or an ad which is another one of those things that piss me off why should all these servers gain revenue on there servers for playing ads when valve servers don't?! It's just really frustrating to see what tf2 has come to.
I know exactly where you are coming from, those servers that play those ads end up lagging my game really high degree, or I get into a server with random plugins when I just want a normal match, or it's one of those premium servers, or its filled with nothing but bots, or it's completely empty. Sorry if my grammar made you cringe, but yeah, this is a very terrible issue.

This was before Valve added search filters in 2014, which had only Valve servers on by default, it's disingenuous to say this was the state of quickplay when it's been improved.

AQWorlds is different to Adventurequest. Made later, but IMO they shouldn't have bothered making AQW. It's just a 'meet other players' version of Adventurequest.
