  • Another long overdue video. In my years of collecting watches, I've made my fair share of terrible watch purchases. From the Rolex President and Breitling Navitimer to the Omega Seamaster and Rolex Submariner I have my regrets. I've also let a few get away like my Rolex Datejust and Omega Seamaster Chrono. Here is a quick take on my biggest regrets on buying and selling watches.

Great to hear someone who actually purchases pieces they love ..unlike so many UA-camrs who are only interested in a piece holding its value..which to me is Souless buy the pieces that speak to you not just what the Herd say you should be wearing...

Anthony, my Brother, we have all been there. Since I never cull anything from the collection, my biggest mistake is I take too long to make up my mind to add a piece to the collection. For me, a piece really needs to speak to me or otherwise it doesn't matter. Sometimes it will take me up to 6 months to make up my mind to add something, and by that time no one will have it in stock. It is weird but I have always been that way. Thank you for sharing with us your mistakes. I firmly believe that this is a community and that we can learn from the mistakes of others. As long as we are open to listening. I hope all is well! -Mark

Seiko Kinetic. In theory it ticked the right boxes for me : quartz accuracy but no batteries. The watch turned out to be an attention seeking monster that demanded wrist time to stay charged. I replaced it with an automatic Seamaster. It’s now solar or automatic with hand wind for me.

One real regret in 40 years of collecting. I took a pass on an AP ultra thin dress watch in 18k white gold with white dial and a croc strap that was priced at $1000. Instead I bought an Omega Constellation 2 tone quartz for $700 and used the $300 difference to buy a suit for work. This was in 1986 and that blunder haunts me to this day.

Wow... that reminds me of years ago when I bought my Corvette. At the time I considered an Acura NSX for similar or less money. I decided on the Corvette at it sounded better, was faster and got better fuel economy even though I liked the Acura as well. I had no idea they would become collectible and go up crazily in value. I could have quadrupled my money...

I was planning on getting the Datejust in 36 with the jubilee bracelet. I seen a fellow person showing it on his big 7.5 wrist and he said it fit very nicely. He did not feel it was to small on his well developed wrists. I am not as tall as you Anthony but saying what a pain to set the smaller watches I might go with the Datejust ll in 41mm.. Nothing is set in stone yet but thnx for your insight..

As a new collector and a retired guy with many hobbies, I gave myself a per-watch cap of ~300 USD. Hard to make an enormous mistake when you spend so little (relative to what many people spend, that is). I like homage watches for their much over-reported "bang-for-the-buck," but given my per-watch cap, that should be no surprise. These days I'm ending my watch channel comments with a wrist check: Orient Mako II black dial.

Great video! Another problem these days is "information", which is actually great, as never we could get so much info about a watch (forum/blog/youtube, ect.....) But also info can be mind-polluting, influencing you in buying watches that seems to be everyone's grail, and at the end, are not for you... Buying what you truly like, trying it out, feeling the emotion, is what it should be... Many of us fell in love with watches that are not "exceptional" or iconic, or pieces without in-house movement, but for some irrational reason we fill a special connection with that time piece, like you with your Bretling white dial in the video. If you buy what you love, you will never regret it.

The biggest trap you can fall into as a watch collector is buying watches because they are a good deal. I've fallen into a few of these and have regretted all except one purchase in that way (Sinn 103). Cheers Anthony.

I can absolutely relate. I bought a Hamilton Pan Europe Chronograph-Panda Dial after it came up for auction on Ebay. I always loved the watch and its classic look. Watch was in terrific condition, no problems at all and the seller was honest. Problem was that it was 45 MM and even without lugs, I put the watch on and realized it was way to big! I knew it was 45MM, I was thinking that it would be ok on my wrist because I wear 44MM watches comfortably. Anyway, now I regret not having done a bit more research on the watch and at least trying it on somewhere. Now I have to sell it...what a waste. It is a learning experience and I will now tread more carefully with watches and their size. It really sucks because there are so many watches I love that are just way too big or small on my wrist.

I enjoyed the video. Just a few comments. For me the one that got away was not my fault. My first luxury watch was a all steel and steel bezel Tag Heuer Aquaracer automatic and I loved it so much. I had a small issue with the movement but since I purchased from grey market, they had a 3rd party warranty company. They fix the issue but scratched the watch in the process. I wanted to get another but that bracelet and case combo nolonger exist. I got a refund but am without that watch. Second thing, never get something in place of your grail. It will eat you up alive. Lastly, the Datejust is my grail (which I now own) and also prefer it over the Day Date. It is less cluttered on the dial which is more my style. Once again, nice video.

Here is my tip for the person who is just getting started. Go to AliExpress and other Chinese websites. Buy 1 of each style of watch you might be interested in. Many can be had for under $10.00 . I bought 3 field type watches for $10.00. I wore them for a few months and realized I do not like them. I also realized that most pilot watches are similar so I am not buying pilot watches. For less than a couple of Starbuck's latte's I got the lesson. I thought my holy grail watch was the Rolex Daytona. From another site I bought 2 really bad Daytona replicas for about $20.00 with quartz movements. I found out I do not like the Daytona. Too small, hard to read and I really never use the chronograph. I think Parnis does a great job on homage watches, but I will not be spending real money on any Daytona homages. Again, lesson learned for not much money. I then bought a $20.00 automatic Tevise Submariner homage in 43 mm. I learned about automatic movements, it only has a 10 hour power reserve so you have to wear it every day. But I really enjoy the watch, especially on the Bond NATO strap. I bought 2 rectangular dress watches and I wear them with a suit. I bought a Mickey Mouse watch and Frank Mueller homage with coloured dials. I really like them and I wear them for fun. Those 4 watches cost less than $40.00. Then I bought an automatic Nautilus homage for $35.00. It has become my second favorite watch. I really like the Submariner so I started looking for a higher quality version in blue similar to the Rolex blue dial sub ref. 116619LB. After a few months I found a 42 mm Invicta Pro Diver ref 30092 with a gorgeous starburst blue dial for $75. I love this watch and it is my daily go to watch. Did I make some mistakes along the way. Yes. Spending $150 on a Seiko Flightmaster, the most expensive watch I have bought. I really do not like it. I also bought a 40 mm sterile GMT Coke homage for $75. I hate the sterile dial, I prefer 42 mm in that style watch and now I would have bought a Pepsi version . But I am all in for just over $400, the price of an Orient Neptune dive watch. I am now much better armed to go forward in a much more intelligent way in my watch journey. My next watch is going to be another $20 Tevise in Hulk colors. I am a blue guy, but having a green watch might be fun. Over time I will be upgrading my watches so that they have generational movements which will last and I can pass them along to my 4 sons. Patience is required in this hobby. There is lots to learn.

quite a lot of mistakes. and a big ones. I just got two minor ones, one is my very first watch from Orient, I bought it because I just wanted any watch and friend recommended the brand. And now I see that 37mm is a bit small for me. the other one I was waiting on a Tissot watch really late at night, but it was out of stock, so I instantly ordered a cheap similar looking one, but in the morning I was like, why?? . that was a 300 buck mistake for both watches and now couple of my friends are gonna get a birthday presents. I now stay down for a month before I buy anything and that really helps, some watches I replace with better options, and some when I look at them constantly I just realize that I can live without 'em.
the mistake I'm never gonna make - buy automatic moon phase watch.

How is your opinion different from a google review of a business? All see many watch youtubers refrain from giving details of bad watch transaction experiences. You can caveat your opinion with the fact that its YOUR OWN PERSONAL experience, not indicative of overall quality of the watch dealer. And, you are not any certified watch expert to be liable for a libel suit. That would make any type of online reviews of business open for lawsuits. Great video though man!
