USOG ...and THIS is why yours is my favourite UA-cam channel. I’m sure that David from Somerset would agree. Who else would MAKE a video for one viewer, primarily? Not many. This was a great video, even if only to serve as an example that there are still some people who go out of their way for others. Great stuff!👍🏼

Hi David, I'm looking to buy a 20-30 year old Heym SR20N as my first .243 rifle for occasional stalking. Not currently set up for a mod although the seller has agreed to get one put on. Even though it's an old gun, I still love the look of it and just wanted to know if you still love yours? I'm in Somerset too, BTW, near Wellington! USOG: great video. Really informative. I can't afford a Mauser or a Sauer 101/202, so have fallen in love with the Heym.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Which version of the SR 30 have you got/would you deem interesting? I bought the SR 21 as my first allround hunting rifle (cal.8x57is mostly for germanys lovely black forest) in an outrageous deal, when i actually wanted to look at an SR 30.
Now a few rifles later i am still absolutely lost to my Heym and want to buy an SR 30 to fulfill the desire, that led me to it.
Is there any particular model you would recommend in terms of general feel and collectability?

I've been the proud owner of an SR21 Super Classic in 8x57 for a bit over a year now and everything you say is absolutely true. You, of course, sacrifice the controlled round feed and top loading, but you still get what I'd call a true stalking/express rifle for a very reasonable price. It points like a dream and has assisted me in many hunts already. A great rifle!

Thanks for sharing - and I'm glad you agree. I handled a Rigby rifle recently and I must say, the Heym captures the best of the Rigby and more - a truly superb stock and rifle. The 8X68 S is a dramatic performer in the field as you know. I load it below maximum for lesser game; partly for recoil reasons and partly because the full loads cause such catastrophic damage. I can't think of a better rifle - despite the absence of CRF.

Found this tidbit on heym usa :
"HEYM barrels do not require a break-in to
remove tooling marks left from button and
cut rifling processes. Thousands of pounds of
pressure in the hammer-forging process mold
the steel around a hardened mandrel forming a
much smoother interior surface than either cut
    rifling or button rifling.
This forging process also work hardens the
steel into a much more durable barrel that will
provide roughly 2x the barrel life of a button or
cut rifled barrel without sacrificing uniformity or accuracy." I suspect Styer could make a similar Claim.

Outstanding gun and great video! I actually saw this very rifle on Ralf's website advertised for sale but at the very end of the description was the dreaded word "sold". Well, hello again Heym SR21 in 8X68S! I am very happy that USOG bought you so we got a chance to see you again!! :) If you decide to hunt with it you might want to remove these bases and put EAW mounts on it. For a scope, Schmidt and Bender 3-12X42 classic model would go with this rifle perfectly. I have a Heym SR30 (7mm Magnum) and a Model 55 (9.3X74R) myself. In caliber 8X68S, I have a custom Mauser made by SABI gunmakers in South Africa. It is an absolutely wonderful caliber (shoot it with RWS 180 grain H-mantel ammo, you can get them from Mark at NECG whom I am sure you know). Again, thank you very much for all your informative videos. -Omid

    * * *
Some thoughts that I have been meaning to share with you: You have an impressive collection of sporting firearms and I admire the way you compare and contrast them to show the advantages or weakness of each design. I think you are uniquely positioned to make improvements to the sporting rifle. Think about fundamental unsolved problems and maybe you come up with a solution. I don't believe that professional designers who work for big companies will come up with a ground-breaking new idea any time soon. The next Paul Mauser or John Browning will be an "amateur" like you and I (I am using the word amateur here as a compliment. Historically, the "amateur" was considered to be the ideal balance between pure intent, open mind and the interest or passion for a subject.). So, please think actively as you play with your favorite rifles or shotguns and you may come up with a genuinely new idea to make a rifle better. I myself have been thinking about improving riflescopes for a few years now and I have succeeded to some degree (If you have time, I'll be happy to share some of my designs with you off line) I encourage you to do same with rifle design. You have the knowledge and the means, so DESIGN A BETTER HUNTING RIFLE! :)
    All the best from LA,
    -Omid

I would keep your Grandfather's rifle as is - and find ammo and buy another rifle for Hamza : ) If you can't and absolutely want to hunt with your Grandpa's rifle then have a new barrel in 30-06 turned in - or something like that, keep the original barrel, and never look back. Engraving by Pauline Muerrle author of: "Winchester: The Way It Really Was." She was the first and only female team member of the Custom Shop. Sadly, when Winchester displaced to S.C. that was the end of the Custom Shop and it has not been resurrected in Portugal. Have always wanted to scope this .358 and hunt ....but it remains unfired. I've owned both but they are quite similar - the 21 is like the 20 with different options. Sorry I can't be more specific - I don't have either right now. Hi Mike thx for the response, friend of mine has a 21 just by holding his rifle I noticed few differences like
SR20: double stack floor plate magazine; SR21 single stack drop box magazine.
SR20: safety on side (like Sako/Tikka); SR21 safety on bolt.
SR20: barrel length is 24"; SR21 barrel length usually 20".
SR20: large ejection port so top loadable; SR21 small ejection port so really need to load into magazine when it's off the rifle.
homestly love this rife the handling is just amazing and very light , my conclusion the 20 is a better rifle, now debating either a nice meopta R2 3-18x56 illuminated or a swarovski Z6 3-18x56 , most probably will mount a Meopta just love those scopes simply amazing
