Eat em and Smile was easily one of the best albums of 86. The band absolutely smoked, and Dave delivers a full throated vocal performance. Songs like Shy Boy and Elephant Gun are so freaking heavy! What a great, great era for Diamond Dave
Sheehan, Vai, Bissonette, and Roth. Man, what a band that was. I wholly appreciated Roth in the 80s. That appreciation has only grown during the intervening years.
@@lazarus1672 - I saw G3 in 2001 with Petrucci, Satch, Vai (Then Eric Johnson came out at the end to jam since we were in Austin and he lives there). One of the most underrated, best drummers I've ever seen live. They Rocked the roof off that auditorium. Never listened to VH after Roth's departure.
Did you ever listen to Gregg on Maynard Ferguson’s Live from San Francisco album? MF went from his regular stable of North Texas or Berklee drummers to just a beast with Gregg. I wasn’t surprised when all of a sudden he’s with DLR.
Yes, he was! Great post. Nobody could come close to Dave. With Sammy, they became more "middle of the road." The band were still great...but they LOST the magic. (Thankfully, years later, the fans were heard and Dave came back for good. Alex STILL hates Sammy...to this day.)
Anybody complaining about Dave talking too much? This guy can articulate better stoned out if his tree than than any of you on your very best day! Ain't nobody like DLR and ain't nobody gonna BE like DLR, ever. Just a unique, intelligent and fantastic frontman.
Dave always talks too much without an end ! Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and anxiety. He is very nervous. He is always plug in. And he makes me feel bad, as nervous as him. He needs to be on treatment , urgently! Poor diamond David!!!
Dave was also the frontman when it came to giving interviews. He talked so the other guys didn't have to. He was a jokester and did a lot of funny interviews over the years. The best ones were the radio interviews.

That entire band is a virtuoso quad. Dave was extremely smart not to go out and just try to put together a Van Halen replica band. As VH evolved (or devolved, depending on your perspective) with Sammy, Dave evolved with Vai, Sheehan, and Bissonette. They were all top tier stage performers too.
Finally. A statement that is completely underrated. Being a drummer, he killed it. One of the best I'd ever seen live, and I've seen Peart, and Buddy Rich. Very, very underrated drummer Doesn't get enough acknowledgement i.m.o. But the drumming community realized it, if no one else did.

Guys anyone know why this band didn't last? Dave hit it out of the park when he put this band together Their two albums were incredible the tours were some of the most entertaining I'd ever seen and I just scratch my head asking why these guys weren't together for ten or twenty years? Was it just Dave?
If you saw the EEAS tour you'd have noticed that the band played a lot of Van Halen songs. Do you really think Steve or Billy would hang around a decade doing that? The time was ripe for both artists to break away and start their own thing.
I was one of the most obsessed VH fans on earth. As a guitarist I thought EVH was a god and DLR the greatest front man of all time. When they went separate ways I just KNEW I was going to prefer VH's album over Daves - if only because I was already a big Sammy Hagar fan (Standing Hampton remains a favorite). But it didn't work out that way! I didn't really *dislike* 5150, but IMO "Eat 'em and Smile" continued the Van Halen legacy much more faithfully than 5150.
Same here. I had a poster of EVH on my bedroom wall and thought, okay, Dave's gone, now they're really gonna rock! 5150 came out and I listened to it a lot but it got old fast. Then Eat em and Smile and I was blown away! How could another guitarist be as good (or better) than Eddie. Eat 'em stayed in my cassette player in the car while 5150 collected dust in the glovebox.
I'm still waiting for Dave and HIS band to hit Vegas again! I think he was fine with Steve Vai and the others. His vision was different from Van Halen and that was what drew them apart.
He's a cocaine pro. Back in my partying days, when I would get really wired, I had hard time forming sentences. Always tripping over my words, and sometimes stuttering. Ugh what a horrible drug. I miss it so much.
At the end of this interview they had Dave sign an Eat ‘Em And Smile LP that they gave away. I still have it 37 years later.
Eat em and Smile was easily one of the best albums of 86. The band absolutely smoked, and Dave delivers a full throated vocal performance. Songs like Shy Boy and Elephant Gun are so freaking heavy! What a great, great era for Diamond Dave
I saw this Tour, one thing I remember vividly is that these guys made it look real easy. Amazing musicians.
I love how Diamond Dave embraces the spotlight and nails it every single time. Very motivational
Sheehan, Vai, Bissonette, and Roth. Man, what a band that was. I wholly appreciated Roth in the 80s. That appreciation has only grown during the intervening years.
Vai had already played for Zappa and Alcatraz, and he says I'm from LI ny and was playing around in bands there. What a great human being Vai is.
jmgmarcus i just thought the same
ZAPPA it doesn’t get much better
I met Vai and Satriani in Vancouver on the G3 tour. Vai was a conceited prick. Sach very cool nice guy.
actually, its very bad business in entertainment to tie yourself to things that date you. Thats why he didnt mention Zappa.

The Eat em and smile band was deadly.
Jeff McPeek Yeah man, those cats could play!!
Yep brilliant band...
Agree! Saw that tour. They pulled the roof off that place.
One of the best trios in R&R history
The music was not better than Van Hager though. Not one album was better. Maybe one song DAMN GOOD.
Dave goes from Eddie Van Halen to Steve Vai. That's like winning the lotto twice.
Then Jason Becker. The trifecta.
Is it tho?? They were all already famious.
Amazingly put!

David thought Billy Sheehan took away from the spot light being on him.
Each following record sold less and less as musical tastes changed from what I read.
