Unparalleled western scene. I love the way the smiles dissipate from Woody Strode and Jack Elam's faces when Bronson tells them they have, “…two too many.”
They couldn't make a movie like this today. Studio execs would never accept the slow pacing. Movies have to have 3 sec cuts, dark scenes to hide stupid action, and bullets flying everywhere like every 10 minutes.
Gus to blue duck- he’ll be back shortly you can sit over there in the shade and wait a while If you’re able once me and you get through That’s pretty threatening 🤣
A brilliant opening sequence to one of the best films ever made. The 3 gang members killing time, waiting for a stranger who may or may not show up. Nothing happens and yet you can't take your eyes (or ears) away from the screen. All the different sounds- the cracking of knuckles; a waterdrop continually dropping on a bald head/ cowboy hat; the watermill; a fly trapped in a gun barrel, and then the whistle of the train. Nothing happening... and yet you're held by it. Just brilliant.
I agree 100% Leone had no equals in his ability to show "the west" the way we think it must have been and with Morricone sounds & score you were riveted to your seat. i absolutely love this flick.
I watched this amazing Western when it first came out in '68 at an historic movie theater in beautiful Ouray Colorado. I was only 13. Recently, my son and I watched this as I explained how there's unique musical themes for each main character. For Charles Bronson, it was the harmonica theme. If I watched this blindfolded, I would be able to identify which character was center stage. My son loved it! I'll keep watching this till I'm gone without ever tiring of the music, talent, story line, scenery and production. Long live Once Upon A Time in the West!!!
Jack Elam just kills me. He played secondary character roles going way way back. I'm not sure I can call a movie a western without him in it. And Charles Bronson is my favorite actor of my lifetime. Hands down.
"You brought two too many". One of the best retorts ever. How their faces suddenly changed. "All together or one at a time". Another line I like, from Claudia. I hope I haven't misquoted her.
Once Upon a Time in the West. By far the best western ever. Leone was a masterful director. The visuals, sounds, camera work, every detail attended to.
Best opening scene in a western ever. Real bad men...Charles Bronson, old sleepy eye Jack Elam, Woody Strode. Man, when that harmonica kicks in. One of my favourite westerns alongside the Long Riders the Great Northfield Minnesota Raid, and of course the great Sam Peckinpah's Wild Bunch.
You know why there are no more close-ups on the third villain directly before the showdown? The actor had committed suicide by throwing himself out of a window the night before the turn.
I was 11 years old when I saw this masterpiece in the cinema for the first time. It left a lasting impression on me. The camera angles, the camera work, the music, the unity - unmatched by anyone else. Every film has to measure itself against the movies of Serio Leone. I've seen this movie at least 10 to 20 times in the cinema, it doesn't work on TV. Every filmmaker should see this film first before even thinking about doing a movie. Curiously, the dialogues in German are cooler by far than in the original.
to all the accolades this movie has let's add best cast for supporting characters....these 3 goons got short screen time but they definitely earned their money
Did this film get any awards at all? Or did we in Europe only recognize the quality much later? If it were up to me, every year all the Academy Awards would go to this film. Only the visual effects award would go to H.R. Giger with Ridley Scott's ALIEN.
I am a huge fan of the western genre and I always felt that two of the best ones are The Good The Bad and The Ugly and this film ad bring the greatest of all
@0;02 the credit moving from vertical to horizontal , the hyper sounds , the ankle length coats , the music , the tension followed by action , the brimmed hats , the slow talking and the long time between , the sound of metal on metal(train on the track) , explosions(bullets from guns) - all "neat"
Once Upon a Time In The West is the best western and one of the best movies ever made. When you think that our life time is as a grain of sand that once upon a time something happened, that our lifetime is just a spec of time.

This is one of the legendary openings in the history of Cinemas / Movie Making. Just like the first time I saw Captain Jack Sparrow making his entry to Port Royal ( the curse of the Black Pearl )
I have watched this movie a good few times now, and this clip more times than I can remember. Even after all that I am struck afresh with how the various sounds of the train builds atmosphere. The tension eases as the train pulls away and the sound fades in perfect sync with the outlaws walking away thinking Harmonica was not on the train. We almost immediately get pulled back by the sound of the harmonica which has such an eyrie sound quality it sends tingles down your spine. All this just from the sound. If you appreciate this movie, try and watch The Offer which, on the face of it, does not sound promising as it is a drama about the making of The Godfather, but not only is superbly done, we get to understand some of Francis Ford Coppola's thoughts about several of The Godfather's segments. Michael's forced retreat to Sicily being a good example. I did not know how crucial Francis Ford Coppola considered that part of the movie to be and why. If I recall correctly, Producer Al Ruddy had to find something like $28,000 to take a reduced crew and cast to Sicily to film those scenes. Things sure have changed 50 years later.
Hearts of Darkness, produced by Eleanor Coppola, reveals the cost, financial and psychological, of producing Apocalypse Now. Its screenwriter John Milius, says of the film, "It's not about Vietnam. It IS Vietnam."
I have got this movie DVD of Charles Bronson is he is called Harmonica as he came looking for Henry Fonda as Frank as three gunfighters came instead as it also stars Jack Elam as a guest appearance Jason Robards as Cheyenne and Claudia Cardinal in Once Upon A Time In The West I am dedicating this movie DVD to my old school friends who are both sisters and I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxx
The director asked Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallace and Lee Van Cleff to be the three men at the train station. They all declined but how great would that have been.
Best western ever. Sergio Leone out did himself! I appreciate you sir!
The best Westerns were Bad Dad At Black Rock and The Bravados. Do yourself a favour and watch it.
The American studios didn't accept it back then either unfortunately, so they made a cut that butchered the movie.
“You brought two too many” : the most threatening line in a western ever !

Okay but imagine the same movie but with Clint Eastwood instead of Bronson and a jew harp instead of a harmonica
Did you watch any of Sergio Leone's other movies with your son?
That's also something that can be found in Opera. A musical theme or motif to identify a character or an idea.
I was also 13years old in 1968
And watched the movie at the age of 54 years old 😂😂😂
I saw ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST at the Fox theater in Philadelphia when I was 11. 1 of my ALL TIME FAVORITES.

Love Jack Elam. His comedies are great as well.
Character actor. Fun fact: Jack Elam's lazy eye was a result of a fellow boy scout stabbing him in the eye socket with a pencil
It's a nightmare of the worst movie I've ever seen, its music is loud and heavy
Jack Elam was incredibly fast and accurate with a gun in real life. He trained a lot of actors

@@Bruce-1956 Agree. Best western ever.
