I suggest everyone rent the new Rav4 for a few days before commenting. After test driving a few at various dealers I was ready to buy. I found a Toyota dealer that was part of Toyota Rents. They had a new 2019 Rav4 LE available so I rented it for three days. I put 600 miles on it. I was able to easily achieve 33 to 36 mpg but drives between Sacramento and Reno on hwy 80 were so punishing that I could not wait to return it to dealer. The road noise was deafening from the concrete road, the slightest push on the gas caused a downshift that made the engine roar so loudly that you instinctively took your foot off the gas and the ride quality was beyond abusive, constantly bouncing and jerking us around the cabin. It made the ride home, driving the same road, in my 2005 Highlander a pleasure.
Jim Heck, that is useful input. Consumer Reports agrees with you that the ride and engine noise have deteriorated from the previous generation. After two or three years on the new TNGA platform on the RAV4, Toyota will solve some of the problems. (And please, Toyota, give us some really good driver and front passenger seats.) Your suggestion to rent before you buy is always a great idea when contemplating the purchase of any new vehicle, especially one you intend to keep for a while.
Jim, that's very useful info and good idea to rent! I also drive to Reno to ski a lot, so good applicable info as my 07 Acura MDX is great, but looking at better gaz mileage but not if punishing ride and loud... guessing the ybrid might behave quite differently though (quieter, lot more torq, no downshifting).

tyler laughman I don’t hate my 19 rav4 But I did hate my Nissan, Nissan is a dying junk brand so what’s the point of defending Nissan when they are already in the brink of bankruptcy
I had the opportunity to drive the top trim rogue and its not even a close race, the rogue has poor road visibilty, uncomfortable to drive surprisingly although new, its beginning to have issues already, the back door will not open automatically and has to be operated from outside just after 1.5 yrs old. The interior surprisingly is old even for top trim. The only difference is that, you get a remote start in the rogue in the top trim.
FYI, that Rav4 Hybrid XSE Alex likes so much means coming off almost $10k more. They are not discounting that model in the least in most areas, it is exceeding demand so plenty of dealerships have started charging more than MSRP.
I just had a new transmission put into my Rouge (under warranty) with only 21,000mi on the odo. It’s really too bad, it’s comfortable and does well in New England weather. Nissan needs to ditch the CVT fixation.
Just look at the reputations of both. Toyota has a solid background and Nissan has a lack luster one at best. For me the CVT of the Nissan is my deciding factor plus we also have a RAV4 and trust it 100%. I will admit that the info screen on the Toyota is almost useless, the GPS is maddening.
I have a 2019 Nissan rogue. It's nice. Wife has an 18. I went and looked at the new rav 4 before I bought my rogue . Its nice but its def smaller than the rogue for. And fully loaded its about 3 k more than a rogue fully loaded
I’d be interested in how you make out with your RAV4 hybrid’s all wheel drive system. I live in eastern Canada, on top of a fairly twisty hill. Lots of snow and ice. Obviously you can’t test it for snow and ice, but will look forward to see how you make out on hills, sand and gravel. Some reviewers find the AWD less than adequate in the hybrid. Thanks for another great review.
A good set of Michelin X-Ice winter tires bolted to the made-in-Canada RAV4 will do just fine. Only the Jeep Cherokee is a true 4X4 in this segment and it will in the garage getting repaired during those snow storms.
If it were "a few bucks more," that would be true. But it may well be as much as $6000 or more comparing MSRP's of top trims of comparably equipped non-hybrid models. And that doesn't take account of the greater likelihood of discounts on the Rogue.
@@stephenhendricks103 For 2019 it's $800 difference between rav4 non hybrid and hybrid for some trims, for top trim it was under 2k. This will pay off very quickly. But the benefit isn't just with gas savings, it's better acceleration and quietness is what you get with hybrid.
@@TrubaMoya Sorry for the misunderstanding. I thought your comment was comparing the RAV4 and the Rogue, not the hybrid vs non-hybrid Rav4. As it happens, I agree that for the RAV4 the relatively minor price difference between hybrid and non-hybrid models is very appealing.
I test drove the gas and the Hybrid which is $800 more and worth every dollar. I purchased the hybrid XLE and never second guessed the decision. Quick, better mpg and quieter vs gas version.
If you are just leasing and not purchasing (and not thinking of keeping the vehicle for many years) then just chose which one you like better for driving. But if you hope to keep the vehicle for a long time, then don't go near the Nissan (unless you are prepared to spend 5 thousand to replace the terrible CVT which will fail at some point).
Toyota is more reliable and cheaper for maintenance ... hence it worry free, which very important factor in selecting a car to buy. If Rav4 make their cargo area more versatile (similar to Rogue) it will be best bargain!!
Australia and New Zealand have stopped shipping the Rav4 due to regenerative hybrid brake issues. does anyone know the safety of hybrid brakes. I once had a NY taxi driver tell me to stay away from hybrids due to problems braking in rain and snow. Any thoughts here? Otherwise this looks like the best suv along with the Santa Fe for the price.
Pramit Bhusal Nope. It has an eCVT, which is a completely different thing. It has a planetary gear set instead of pulleys with a belt/chain. Completely reliable.
Alex: I saw something on another channel regarding the tendency of CVT's to freewheel in downhill situations, and that they are not good choices for people who live in or near mountainous terrain because when it comes to modulating downhill speed, the vehicle is overly dependent on the brakes. Is this correct?
Some CVTs have these issues (particularly the ones from JATCO). Aisin has actually been developing CVTs that have some actual physical gears for low range and then switch for higher efficiency at high speeds. CVTs and Automatics don't behave the same way in terms of shifting (obviously) through the band, so its really just dependant on the CVT and manufacturer.
I have a 2008 Rogue, so maybe the transmission has changed, but I actually notice engine braking when going down steep hills, meaning I use the brakes less. I really like that feature. Not sure if it's because it's a CVT or not.

And I've been seeing a ton of them here in Texas. So I pick the RAV.
Few cars come with nice wheels. I already ordered after market wheels for my XSE hybrid. Gives it a bit more unique look which helps considering there will be a million of these in the road soon enough.
I like the Rav4's front because the headlights & grille are similar to the 2015 Mustang. I'd wouldn't mind the upcoming Ford Mustang-like crossover to look similar.
Nissan engines are good and reliable. It's their transmissions that are not. Standard automatic transmissions should always be the first choice. Not saying CVTs are horrible, it's just the way they're designed.
A lot of channels are doing these long term test but can you really tell how reliable they are with just one year? Additionally if you’re leasing, who cares since most will last 3 years and it’s all covered by warranty.
I think the Nissan Rogue (and Nissan's in general) rate 7/10 in every competitive stat while other competitors from Japan and Korea are 9/10 or 10/10. So the Rogue is "oh-kay" but always "not as good" as competitor-X. The difference comes when you actually visit the Nissan dealer. When you can drive home with a nice Rogue for $5,000 less (15-20% less) than a similar Toyota (or Honda or...), many choose to live with the just "oh-kay" since nothing is really a deal-breaker, even if everything is not as good as the competition.
I concur, I leased a 2017 SL Platinum and the discount was about 8000 $ off the MSRP. Rogue is not as good as competitors but value proposition is higher.... hence the popularity

Id take the rav4. Probably either the limited trim w tq vectoring or the hybrid limited or XSE. But I’m sad that there is no longer a rav4 V6 like there used to be.
How do they drive though? These 2 SUVs are good for pure utility, and not something I would fall in love. They are not good looking in anyway, but at least the Rogue doesn't have that stupid 2nd chin of the Rav4 and the anemic looking butt. Agree the Rav4 should be more reliable as seen in all Toyotas. But I believe the Rogue may be nicer to be in as the last gen felt like a real SUV riding inside while all other Asian SUV felt like they're trying to make the car look tall while the passengers are really sitting low inside guess to preserve whatever handling ability they may come with. On the other hand, since these are purely for utility, reliability should come in very high here. The Rogue is rated as one of the most unreliable SUVs in America recently by Scotty. They have also killed off the hybrid version. I would be very interested to see Alex comparing all the Asian SUVs of the same range in 1 video. tyler laughman I don’t hate my 19 rav4
But I did hate my Nissan, Nissan is a dying junk brand so what’s the point of defending Nissan when they are already in the brink of bankruptcy
Awesome review as usual ... very meticulous and detailed. Wonderful critique and review of the vehicles. Love from Jamaica.
I think the rav4 front end looks better.
Nissan needs to ditch Renault and its mediocre engineering standards.
I was uncertain that the slow power liftgate on the RAV4 was going to get fully opened before the end of the video.
LOL...
Nice job Alex!
Fantastic review. Very comprehensive and I love the scale with details of other ranges for comparison
Thank You
I have a 2019 Nissan rogue. It's nice. Wife has an 18. I went and looked at the new rav 4 before I bought my rogue . Its nice but its def smaller than the rogue for. And fully loaded its about 3 k more than a rogue fully loaded
Rav4 is bigger than the rogue in every metric besides rear seat room lol?
Rav4 all the way . If you compare the hybrid model then its even better .
The Nissan Rogue does look beautiful in the front end. But CVT reliability is a dealbreaker 😔
I have a 2015 Rogue with 60000 miles and not a single issue so far
I paid 21000 brand new
Give it another 40,000km 💸
@@James-rd9mo I can say the same about any brand nowadays. Theres just too much shit in them.
2012 rogue with 89k miles over here
I’d be interested in how you make out with your RAV4 hybrid’s all wheel drive system.
I was deciding between the two and picked neither. Rav4 hybrid is miles better for a few bucks more
If it were "a few bucks more," that would be true.
Stephen Hendricks I got the XSE Hybrid and love it! The mpg is wonderful and the power is plentiful!
I test drove the gas and the Hybrid which is $800 more and worth every dollar.
I purchased the hybrid XLE and never second guessed the decision. Quick, better mpg and quieter vs gas version.
You’ll have to do the 2020 Camry vs. 2020 Sonata
Sonata is garbage.
The master of the auto review!
Any Nissan with a cvt will be a nice yard decoration in a few years.
Alex: “ the RAV4 over here is just umm.... a little more chill”
Me: ......~c h i l l ~
If you are just leasing and not purchasing (and not thinking of keeping the vehicle for many years) then just chose which one you like better for driving. But if you hope to keep the vehicle for a long time, then don't go near the Nissan (unless you are prepared to spend 5 thousand to replace the terrible CVT which will fail at some point).
Toyota is more reliable and cheaper for maintenance ... hence it worry free, which very important factor in selecting a car to buy. If Rav4 make their cargo area more versatile (similar to Rogue) it will be best bargain!!
Toyota should add a two row CUV sized between the RAV4 and Highlander to their lineup.
A large percentage of Nissan is owned by Renault, and quality has slipped ever since they got involved. So Toyota is the easy answer.
J.Howard.Jone nissan means made in japan.renault company is the problem for nissan.
RAV4 is better than the rouge but CX5 is my dream.
There is no redeeming quality of the JATCO CVT that's in the Rogue.
Yep. After 60k miles, clunk, and in goes another one.
CVT=CANNOT VECTOR TORQUE
I prefer the rogue only because I have this one in the video it have much better Quality in fun to drive it have that Infiniti look to it
I’d like to know about putting a hitch on the back with radar sonar have to call Toyota where is exterior hitch accessory?
A 1,750 lbs tow rating is very respectable for the new RAV4 Hybrid. All around it is easily the best choice in this segment.
aisin vs jatco. aisin wins every single time
haha google camry/rav4 transmission problems
i really like the new rav4, its fits most of what i want in this market segment.
Nissan looks better at the front 😂 seriously!?
doesn't the rav4 hybrid have CVT transmission also?
Pramit Bhusal Nope. It has an eCVT, which is a completely different thing. It has a planetary gear set instead of pulleys with a belt/chain. Completely reliable.
eCVT
Alex:
I saw something on another channel regarding the tendency of CVT's to freewheel in downhill situations, and that they are not good choices for people who live in or near mountainous terrain because when it comes to modulating downhill speed, the vehicle is overly dependent on the brakes.
@@MagnesiumPC Thanks Zach!
@@MarkRVillano Nissan rogue has low range gearing for downhill drive with the CVT
I have a 2008 Rogue, so maybe the transmission has changed, but I actually notice engine braking when going down steep hills, meaning I use the brakes less. I really like that feature. Not sure if it's because it's a CVT or not.
@@Briguy1027 it is the CVT they made it better in 2014 Nissan rogue
Used to love Nissan used to like 1995 or older
I have a 2018 Nissan rogue hybrid great gas mileage great headroom JUNK headlights I replace them,
Like the Toyota RAV4 looks better
Are ur leds?
@@uww.v I don't know I just know you can drive with them on you had to have the high beams on to see anyting, so I replaces them.
state law was no greater than 300 candlelight so I put in 233 candlelight now I don't know what the factory headlights were
I'll take the Rav 4 every time.👍
Had a rogue for a week and I kinda or I didn't like it. The Pros, its big, and comfy but way too underpowered. And I've been in the RAV hybrid, power was OK, it wasn't fast, sureb it could use a lil bit more power, but it is adequate, and I quite Like the truck stance it has, and I don't see any resmblace with a Cherokee, maybe in the back. And I've been seeing a ton of them here in Texas. So I pick the RAV.
It not a sport car, you want fast car, but it charger or mustard
@@kromahj I know it isn't, I'm just saying the RAV felt a little livelier. Cheers
Agreed! Love my XSE Hybrid!!!!
Rav4 is great. Just wish they came with better looking wheels
Few cars come with nice wheels. I already ordered after market wheels for my XSE hybrid. Gives it a bit more unique look which helps considering there will be a million of these in the road soon enough.
RAV4, not even close.
I would have compared the rav4 and the forester instead of the rogue
I like the Rav4's front because the headlights & grille are similar to the 2015 Mustang. I'd wouldn't mind the upcoming Ford Mustang-like crossover to look similar.
Best mpg I got in my 2019 rav4 awd was 41.3 mpg. Lowest was 36mpg.
Given its age, will the Rogue be changed up significantly for 2020 or 2021?
Randy Jackson I hope so too. I wonder if the hybrid will change up too. Thanks!
John Chen Covered or not, who wants to spend time at the service center?
@@afcgeo882 Precisely.
Rogue wins easily, way more comfortable
I think the Nissan Rogue (and Nissan's in general) rate 7/10 in every competitive stat while other competitors from Japan and Korea are 9/10 or 10/10. So the Rogue is "oh-kay" but always "not as good" as competitor-X. The difference comes when you actually visit the Nissan dealer. When you can drive home with a nice Rogue for $5,000 less (15-20% less) than a similar Toyota (or Honda or...), many choose to live with the just "oh-kay" since nothing is really a deal-breaker, even if everything is not as good as the competition.
This is so true and why Nissan does not make that much money. they sell a lot of cars but their margins are pretty small.
I concur, I leased a 2017 SL Platinum and the discount was about 8000 $ off the MSRP. Rogue is not as good as competitors but value proposition is higher.... hence the popularity
@@davidwli1 Enterprise has a ton of Rogue and Rogue Sport models in their fleets so I rent them all the time. They are "just fine", so at $8,000 off a price that is already lower than Toyota or Honda, I 100% get-it if you decide to buy one.
Rav 4 no comparison
Rav4 beat that CVT junk.
Rogue is under powered and the interior looks bad. Many people chose Rogue because of cheaper prices. RAV4 won in every way. The Hybrid versions beat every vehicles in the same class. Hybrids are the future. BUT you have to wait months to get one.
Good points. Toyota has already announced they are adding RAV4 Hybrid production in 2020 to their plant in Kentucky because they can't build them fast enough in Japan and Ontario.
2019 rouge is very comfortable. havnt had chance to ride in rav 4 2019
didn't watch the video, didn't need to. Even a 10 year old Rav4 will outlast that CVT rogue
😁😁😁😁😁
Rav4 definitely. I've test drove the rogue and it rattles like crazy. When driving on the freeway, the road noise is very loud and the wind was howling though the open panoramic moonroof.
This is too easy Rav 4. I've rented a rogue twice, hated it both times.
for me no question toyota Japan’s no 1 brand.
I would go Rav4, but that 2.5 liter in Rogue has been tried and tested from early Altima days, so its bulletproof, cvt sucks.
As a female consumer, I love the side by side comparison. Personally, I found the RAV4 a little gutless on the highway when I gave it a test drive merging etc. Thanks for doing this!
Id take the rav4. Probably either the limited trim w tq vectoring or the hybrid limited or XSE.
But I’m sad that there is no longer a rav4 V6 like there used to be.
rav4 is a toyota meaning most probably it will last a good amount longer than its competitors
I think the Nissan has a bit too much Chrome on the front, not a fan.
I believe that would give me a really good idea how they really perform in all areas.
anyone who didn't see this video might unfortunately pick Rogue
How about reliability of these two brands?
I love the look of the front on the RAV. Doesn't look like sad face it looks rugged and way better than the old lame Nissan.
Calling Nissan lame is unfair to the lame.
