Barry Manilow is an amazing songwriter and singer. He has many, many ,many beautiful songs but sometimes doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s a more recent crooner although he also has songs that are upbeat, one of which is Copacabana. The songs “Weekend in New England “, could it be magic ( covered by Donna Summer), I can’t smile without you are a few of my favorites.
Barry Manilow was the king of the 1970s shamelessly over-the-top ballad. His hits almost always featured an uplifting key change -- often several key changes -- in the final choruses. "Weekend in New England" and "Looks Like We Made It" are two great examples from 1976.
You are SO CORRECT about the key changes! I remember taking music theory in high school. My teacher explained all the classical ways to understand a modulation. He said, "If you still can't really hear it, if it's too subtle for you to notice, just listen to some Barry Manilow." And ever since then, I've thought that THIS is the only way to put in a key change. Why be subtle? (For the uninitiated, imagine a song being in C Major. Suddenly the song is different, but also it's not: all the chord changes are the same, and so is the melody, but suddenly it's up higher in D Major. Or even higher! You can really feel that lift.) By the way, I back up the "Weekend in New England" recommendation. It is one of the few, rare songs that became a hit with the title being nowhere found in the lyric of the song.
This song was my biological father’s song and my song to sing together when our family would get together and sing ( he said it reminded him of losing my mom- in their divorce) , my biological dad died when I was 12 and I remember the final time we sang it together. Years later I sang it in our High School talent show and barely got through it without crying. But with the help of my wonderful stepfather who sat right in front of me, I did( he knew how much this song meant to me). I’m so glad you chose this as your first Barry Manilow song. Thank you for the wonderful memories. God bless.
He’s called the ‘King of Crescendo’, his songs start out quiet and slow, then ends huge and powerful. ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ is a perfect example ✌🏼
Thats a great one...Can't smile would be my second fav after Mandy..Just because I was named after the song Mandy..My mom had a whole other name picked out and as I was born the song came on
BM is the king of the Easy Listening genre. He has a huge catalog. “Weekend in New England” and “Somewhere in the Night” are 2 of my favorites. Very powerful.
This is a real treat to watch, Manilow is an ICON! Please do more of him soon: Time In New England, Looks Like We Made It, Copacabana, I Write The Songs, Could It Be Magic
I've seen Barry Manilow at least 10 times in concert. He is an incredible showman. He sounds exactly the same live as in his records. He knows how to arrange a song like no other. His modulation is perfection. I love him!!
Barry was popular mid to late 70's.. His songs mostly always starts out soft and crescendos toward the end.. like a big finish. "Time In New England" is one of my favorites by Barry. Richard Marx is another great piano/singer. "Right Here Waiting" and "Hold On To The Nights" are excellent reaction videos
Give it up for the Fanilows! I love that you're watching him while wearing AC/DC and Beastie Boys t-shirts. Just shows that great music is great music! Other tracks to hit are Copa Cabana (a total guilty pleasure banger), Weekend in New England (going to make you cry), Daybreak, It's a Miracle
Barry has tons of hits. He began as a commercial jingle writer. He’s amazing. One Voice is my personal favorite. He layers his own voice in amazing harmonies using his “one voice”.
Barry! Now here's a rabbit hole to explore - he has so many great songs. My absolute favorite of his is 'I Made It Through The Rain' - it came out around the same time that I finished a long childhood cancer battle. It's my survivor song. 🙂🎗

Always loved Berry Manilow. Women were in love with him, but he plays for the other team. His career spanned more than 50 years. He did it all ...singer-songwriter, arranger, musician, producer and actor.
Now what Im gonna say was said back in the early 80's so no disrespect to anybody but i use to have a boss that was so in love with Barry Manilow and when anybody would say that he was gay she would say, I volunteer to go find out for sure!!!🤣🤣
Ok. Lots of people poke fun at Barry but he is a legendary artist. His voice, piano playing and songwriting are incredible. Mostly he does love songs. Weekend in New England is my favorite.
A lot of people are sh1theads too. Manilow is talented and his songs are really catchy. They build and deliver. If you are driving in your car by yourself and this comes on. I bet you’re singing along. I think he use to accompany Bette Midler when she sang in NYC bathhouses. I like her too usually.
Many many years ago 🤣 my Girl Scout Troop (we were around 8 or 9) did a recital to Barry Manilow. Will never forget my mom trying to choreograph it. Good memories. Best songs are "Could It Be Magic", "Mandy", "I Write the Songs", "Can't Smile Without You". But my personal favorite is "Copacabana".

Wow! Trifecta today! Barry Manilou had a huge career in the mid 70s. I loved his powerful voice and this was his signature song. All of his hits were great. Thanks for listening. So happy you enjoy the songs of our youth.💕
I've been a fan a long time. Some of my favorites are "I Write the Songs", "Can't Smile Without You", "Copacabana", "Looks Like We Made It", "Ships", "Weekend In New England", "Could It Be Magic", "I Made It Through the Rain" and "Somewhere In the Night". Barry started out by writing jingles for commercials. He wrote Band-Aid “I'm stuck on Band-Aid brand, 'cause Band-Aid's stuck on me!”, State Farm - “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.”, KFC - "It's a finger-lickin' good day", among others.
Barry Manilow was my favorite!!! He was the king of the ballads in the 1970s and is one of the most successful musical artists ever. He took a lot of crap in the early years because he wasn't considered "cool" but his fandom was legion! He's had so many hit songs and in later years (the late 80s and 90s) he did other genres like jazz and blues. He still tours, but as what happens with age, the voice isn't the same. Still, he's a legend!

Barry Manilow is a great stage performer to this day; he was on stage during the recent concert for the re-opening of New York in Central Park. He was on when they had to call the event for the lightning/rain in the area. He ended up on CNN singing the end of his set. He's also at the casinoes in Vegas often.
‘Could it Be Magic’ is one of those songs that just carries your soul away to another place, you forget everything else. Thanks for covering him. You guys cover so much. All your fans appreciate you.
The glorious BM is first and foremost a composer and arranger and his iconic key change always take his songs to another level. He never intended to be a singer but in the 70's, he took off and I was and still am, a huge fan .
Barry Manilow was the very first concert i'd ever seen, my boyfriend (now husband) took me to see him when we were in highschool. I had never heard of him before then and became a huge fan afterwards. Time in New England is another fav of mine
Didn’t write this song. The original is called Brandy but same words same melody. I can’t remember his name Something English, Scott maybe. So he changed Brandy to Mandy.
Barry was Bette Miller’s piano player for years before he went out on his own. Copacabana and Weekend in New England are great songs of his that you’d like.
When Barry Manilow wrote this song He Titled it 'Brandy', however at the same time a band called ' Looking Glass' came out with song with the same name, so Barry changed the title to 'MANDY'
Check out his V.S.M. (Very Strange Medley) - he'd do this in concert and it was just a collection of the jingles he'd written for commercials. Lots of fun for folks in MY age bracket....but I'm guessing that most of the jingles would be completely unfamiliar to young folks today and, therefore, probably not as fun.

Mandy was a rescue dog that he had to return. I tried to teach myself how to play this song on the piano. It drove my kids crazy, but they know all the words and the wonder that is Barry Manilow. It's not always a woman!!
Yeah I mean Copacabana is certainly an upbeat tempo song but have you listened to the lyrics?!? I never paid much attention until a couple of years ago playing the song for a co worker ... those lyrics go a bit dark! The lyrics aren't upbeat!

God bless.
That made me tear up......such a beautiful memory to keep forever....at least partially because of Barry Manilow. God Bless you
Beautiful
Teared up, too. Peace, Erin, forever.
Barry was my go to for listening pleasure in the 70s. Anything he sings is awesome.
How can you not love Barry Manilow? He has made some great music. One of the best performers ever.
He’s called the ‘King of Crescendo’, his songs start out quiet and slow, then ends huge and powerful. ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ is a perfect example ✌🏼
Thats a great one...Can't smile would be my second fav after Mandy..Just because I was named after the song Mandy..My mom had a whole other name picked out and as I was born the song came on
In all my years I never heard that expression, but it's so fitting! Thanks for sharing.
I second Cant Smile without You....but he is really such a great talent that you can listen to any....yes, 70s.
Barry Manilow' Could It Be Magic is even better.
My favourite of his. Long version, totally engrossing.
BM is the king of the Easy Listening genre. He has a huge catalog. “Weekend in New England” and “Somewhere in the Night” are 2 of my favorites. Very powerful.
Agree totally! My two favorite songs by him!
Really enjoyed both your reactions. Barry Manilow, just had that voice.
J&A, You'll love his upbeat "Copacabana", "I Write The Songs", "Can't Smile Without You" and "Looks Like We Made It"
Yes- all of these!
Can’t forget Weekend in New England.
And Daybreak
All 4 of these are perfect suggestions !!
A lot of Manilow’s songs have a similar sound and feel. But that’s not a bad thing because his distinctive voice and songs are uniformly good.
Congratulations! Y’all have now entered the world of Barry Manilow! He is so good but he is still performing!
Amber’s reaction to music is so genuine. She gives every song a chance, she immerses herself. Can’t fake that.
This is a real treat to watch, Manilow is an ICON! Please do more of him soon:
Time In New England, Looks Like We Made It, Copacabana, I Write The Songs, Could It Be Magic
Barry's "Copacabana" - yup, so much fun. And you'll be dancing in your seats. And it's storytelling, too!
My #1 too!
@Rob Wolf...... I've been a Fanilow for many years!!!!
I thought the same thing! Kind of ironic! 😂
oh Weekend in New England.... definitely will make you cry!!
I have playlists that consists of both AC/DC and Barry.
I noticed the irony of the T-shirts too. Always humorous whenever that happens.
At 9 or 10 years old, this song used to break my heart. The longing and loss in his voice was palpable. Good stuff, good memories
Barry has tons of hits. He began as a commercial jingle writer. He’s amazing. One Voice is my personal favorite. He layers his own voice in amazing harmonies using his “one voice”.
Love VSM
Barry! Now here's a rabbit hole to explore - he has so many great songs. My absolute favorite of his is 'I Made It Through The Rain' - it came out around the same time that I finished a long childhood cancer battle. It's my survivor song. 🙂🎗
This song was 75’. Weekend in New England! Is good also!
Yes, finally. Barry Mailow is so insanely talented. So glad you decided to do this one!

About a week ago he was at that NYC concert when the storm came up while he was in the middle of singing. And what was so amazing ... he looked no different than he did in the day. A true class act!
Andis rain song was next song before the rain stopped the concert
"Looks like we made it" is fantastic! Also, the best earworm ever "Copacabana". Barry is one of the best songwriters of all time!!
This was the 70s. We listened to everything back then. Zepellin to Manelow!✌❤
And it was a BLAST

This is 1974. Barry has been going at it ever since, through today
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL SONG AND GREAT ARTIST!
Manilow used to play piano for Bette Midler before he hit it big Songs to listen to Could it be magic, can't smile without you, Daybreak Coupacaba. Last one I can't spell ...lol.Mandy was 1975.
I was going to mention that. Thanks for remembering, too.

Turns out Mandy was Randy.
Love LOVE Barry🥰🥰🥰
Reacted to Barry Manilow . . . you made my day. "It's a Miracle" is a great song by him, very upbeat.
Another great one is "Beautiful Music".
You start off with a great one by Barry. Coppa Cabana by Barry is good too.
He started in the 70's I believe but he is still performing now.
Ok. Lots of people poke fun at Barry but he is a legendary artist. His voice, piano playing and songwriting are incredible. Mostly he does love songs. Weekend in New England is my favorite.
Always love him and his music
A lot of people are sh1theads too. Manilow is talented and his songs are really catchy. They build and deliver. If you are driving in your car by yourself and this comes on. I bet you’re singing along. I think he use to accompany Bette Midler when she sang in NYC bathhouses. I like her too usually.
Weekend in New England: yes!
@@myrevival4325 YES !!!!
Weekend In New England is also my favorite song. Not just Barry's, but of any performer.
Y'all stepped into a gold mine with this guy. He really did write the songs that make the whole world sing, like his song said.
Ironic that his biggest hit was the song Love on the Rocks, which was written by Patti Kristoff.
Except he didn’t write that song that made the world sing lol
@@jerryboese8820 how ironic. I just looked that up. You're right.
he didnt write 'mandy' either, it was scott english
@@trhansen3244 That was Neil Diamond.
Beautiful song and Barry Manilow is amazing 👏
He was HUGE in the 70's! So many hits..He signed my sister's cast on her broken leg at one of his concerts👍 More Barry please!!

Oh man I have heard this song in so many years. It’s great to hear this again it’s probably been about 40 or 45 years since I heard this. Makes me realize that this tune is absolutely timeless.
I had forgotten how great it is. Hey, Barry was big time in the 70’s. Very popular.❤
If you want easy on the ears.. James Taylor… pick any song, any record from 1970 to now. He’s a legend

Wow! Trifecta today! Barry Manilou had a huge career in the mid 70s. I loved his powerful voice and this was his signature song. All of his hits were great. Thanks for listening. So happy you enjoy the songs of our youth.💕
Barry is the GOAT of love songs in the 70’s!!
“I write the songs”, “Ready to take a chance again” and “Could it be magic” are another few tracks from Barry Manilow.
I played "Could it be the magic" for my friends (when the album came out) and my friends were blown away!!!
Ironically he didn't write 'I Write the Songs'.
This is one of my favorites of all time since I was a child and I'm 51 now
I agree with the person who has suggested Neil Diamond. “Hello again” is beautiful it always makes me emotional 😭
So many great songs by niel diamond... today's favorite (changes almost daily 😄) is I've Been This Way Before 🤷♀️
Same, Neil Diamond is awesome - can't go wrong with his songs!
Hello Again was one of his biggest hits and was written by his wife Jennifer. She also went on to write the song The Rose.
Great song!
American Bandstand, Jump Shout Boogie, he covers a lot of styles. :D Mandy was around 1974 or so, iirc.
I saw him in concert about 15 years ago and cried like a baby. I grew up listening to these beautiful songs. They hit me right in the heart.
I think “Even Now” is great choice to continue this journey of Barry M.
Even Now is totally my favorite. Great recommendation.

He also has a Christmas album which is just wonderful.
Heck ya some Barry Manilow! He's still on my list along with heavy metal, hip-hop, 80s rock/country. Gotta have Barry on your playlist!
Barry picked me at his concert to dance to this song ❤ One of the best moments of my life 😍
@@trinakoch6240’m jealous !! One of my favorites too along with Mandy and ready to take a chance again.
The glorious BM is first and foremost a composer and arranger and his iconic key change always take his songs to another level. He never intended to be a singer but in the 70's, he took off and I was and still am, a huge fan .
I’m a Fanilow too!!
Barry Manilow was the very first concert i'd ever seen, my boyfriend (now husband) took me to see him when we were in highschool. I had never heard of him before then and became a huge fan afterwards. Time in New England is another fav of mine
barry manilows voice has that silky sweetness to it.
A true songwriter. Maybe the “catchiest” song writer ever. Even wrote McDonalds commercial jingles.
Dont forget the I was stuck on band-aids commercial jingles as well
Pretty sure he wrote 'and like a good neighbor, State Farm is there..."
And “I’m a Pepper your a Pepper wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too?”
Dr. Pepper👍
He also wrote and sang American bandstand, Dick Clark!
It was written by Clive James I think.
Swoon!! Love Barry Manilow - he's got a TON of hits, all of which are very worthy of your time! Great choice!
Barry has so many hits. He also wrote songs for others. I think he also did commercial jingles.
McDonald's-You Deserve A Break Today.
Kentucky Fried Chicken too. Grab a bucket of chicken
Still in use 50 years after he wrote it: Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.

"Hello again", "Cherry baby", "Heartlight".
Mandy was a rescue dog that he had to return. I tried to teach myself how to play this song on the piano. It drove my kids crazy, but they know all the words and the wonder that is Barry Manilow. It's not always a woman!!
I knew it was about a dog. I always thought though that it was his dog that had died.
The 70's. My childhood.. Barry Manilow, The BeeGee's, John Denver. So much good music. Keep going....
If you’re looking for an upbeat song by Barry Manilow that tells a story, it doesn’t get much better than Copa Cabana.
Yeah I mean Copacabana is certainly an upbeat tempo song but have you listened to the lyrics?!? I never paid much attention until a couple of years ago playing the song for a co worker ... those lyrics go a bit dark! The lyrics aren't upbeat!
@@molsongrrrl Yes, definitely meant to say uptempo, not upbeat. LOL!
In my top ten songs all time. Just beautiful
Barry has a sound that everybody likes, no matter what genre of music you listen to. He can pull that emotion out of you.
I love pretty much every song of Barry's, especially Weekend in New England. Thanks for this.
Just one of his many love songs. He wrote them and for other singers. 70's. So great for us!

1970's. Giving without taking or expectations is the real definition of love. Looks like we made is another great by Barry Manilow.
“I Made It Through the Rain” is another Barry Manilow great one that brings back tons of childhood memories for me!
When I was in HS I listened to the Doobies, Chicago, Zeppelin, Moodies, EWF and for my slow tunes - Barry. Thanks for getting to him!
One of the most beautiful song EVER
“Copacabana” and “It’s a Miracle” are both more upbeat songs.
Copacabana is a fun song!
@@laurel1634 A fun song... about love, cheating, sex, and murder. Brilliant. lol
The upbeat music hides the true darkness of the lyrics.
Cops over played (but not for them). Miracle is awesome.
I'm not sure I would call Copacabana upbeat. Kokomo by the Beach Boys is upbeat, Copacabana is kind of sad, like Delta Dawn (well done, but sad).
