I can’t disagree strongly with much of this. It’s a good ranking other than the fact that Red Rose Speedway is criminally low. It didn’t click with me straight away but I think it’s quite a consistent album. My love is a good ballad, Little Lamb Dragonfly is highly underrated and the medley at the end is fantastic. Even many of the songs in between are decent.
Great work! And I mostly agree with you. Yes, RRS works much better as the double album Paul intended, and would be even better if that horrible 'Loup' was replaced with '1882'. I'm not a big fan of 'Chaos' and could never understand what the fuzz was about.
I have to say, there were moments in this ranking where I wanted to slap you , but I totally give you props for putting my number one album as your 4th, I’m a big fan of Flowers, a perfect 80’s album for him. There are things with further research, you’ll find why Paul made the decisions he did and what he was thinking, for example the album Off The Ground has a theme of Ecology, which by putting that in mind, makes the album gel more than you think.
Alright here’s how my ranking as of right now. 1. Ram: one of my favorite albums ever and just one I have to hear all when I hear one track. 2. Chaos And Creation In The Backyard: an emotional journey I really relate with 3. McCartney II: a wild album that is groovy af. 4. Egypt Station: the take of yours that actually pissed me off the most (but it’s your take, i don’t want to be rude), just an album I love and the modern record that gave me revelation that he can still make great music. 5. Tug Of War: another groove with some of the best vocals and writing he has ever made. 6. Band On The Run: a classic, enough said. 7. McCartney: very influential on what my music would be, very diy and love it. 8. McCartney III: another modern gem, made some of the right songs for the right time. 9. Wings At The Speed Of Sound: the album that grew on me the most, went from very mid to me to one of Wings best works. Even Linda’s song I love. 10. Back To The Egg: a mess but a fun mess. 11. New: was higher beforehand, but dropped down because some of the stuff isn’t as good due to production. But I love it. 12. Wild Life: a sweet little gem. Both is too long for the stuff idc for, and too short in total. 13. Flaming Pie: a great record that is very “Dad Rock”, but, I think it’s beautiful with few mid outliners. 14. London Town: another mess. But I adore the lesser known songs. 15. Off The Ground: another “dad rock” album of his, can be too long, but still interesting and has a few good rockers and ballards. 16. Flowers In The Dirt: definitely his most middle aged album, has so many love songs I hum to myself when I feel love. 17. Venus And Mars: a bit overrated, but I do like it. 18. Memory Almost Full: a very 2007 produced record that a beautiful existential at times record. 19. Driving Rain: I will defend this album because it’s got a darker tone than his others and I love the novelty of it. But too long by the end and I still feel underwhelmed when i hear it. 20. Red Rose Speedway: the biggest disappointment in his discography. I love many of the lesser known songs, I just will say some of the singles should have been on this album (Live And Let Die, Hi Hi Hi, and C-Moon are the ones i thought were on this record). 21. Pipes Of Peace: a mid record that just feels like b-side and extras to Tug Of War. It’s just got a few songs I hear on repeat, but rarely heard this in full. 22. Press To Play: his weakest record, but still enjoy it. It’s a scattered 80s production hellscape, but I love. If it was at least organized better in tracklisting, it would have been a few spaces up. Still stand by that he has no bad albums. Relistened to all 22 with a friend who’s never listened to much of his records and it made me declare him as my favorite artist ever.
hello my friend , i really love that you like Uncle Paul so much !!! (i speak spanish , but i try some english) for me Paul is just the best, and Wings is my fever band ever ( even if ,believe me, i loooove Beatles) Venus and Mars is the best album ever made .... Arrangements ,music versatility, powerful different voices, unvelievable melodies .... AMAZING i enjoyed your comments and i like your taste for music ,and you made some smart quotes !!!!
@@geriwings Hey man!!! Thanks for the comment! Yo hablo español asi que todo bien👌 Muchas gracias por tus comentarios, personalmente prefiero a los Beatles pero Paul’s solo work tambien esta super alto
I was a teenager in the 70s and wings became my favorite band. I love all wings albums, them being different, and not many later albums come close to the wings period. Wings over america
Yikes, you've got my favorite album, London Town, at number 14. I consider it to be the best album, by far, by any solo Beatle. How can you possibly speak disparagingly of such amazing tunes as I've Had Enough and Famous Groupies? This is Paul at his absolute best. London Town and Ram are the two McCartney albums that I can listen to nonstop for days on end. In fact, I would say that London Town is a perfect album. (Ram is almost perfect: it would be better if Long-Haired Lady were left off it.) And I can only think of maybe four or so albums that I consider perfect.
@@knuckledragger9322 Yeah I don’t fully agree. First of all i love Long Haired Lady and London Town is too much for me. I really don’t get the point of the pirate like singing of Famous Groupies. But i love that you like the album so much!!
Great video, really enjoyed your descriptions of each album and rationale for where you positioned them in your list. I would agree with Ram at number one but would have Band on the Run at number 2 and probably Chaos and Creation in the Backyard at number 3. The next batch of albums would include Flowers in the Dirt, Tug of War, Memory Almost Full and probably Back to the Egg. I agree side one of Venus and Mars is arguably his greatest side of an album, Wings at the Speed of Sound is excellent if you get over the different vocalists, and London Town, Red Rose Speedway and Pipes of Peace are other favourites of mine. McCartney is the best of the three self titled albums but is too patchy to be rated as high as you do. Too many unfinished, self indulgent noodling. My least favourite albums would be McCartney III, Egypt Station and Press to Play. Every album has something to recommend it though and there are classic tracks on every album with the possible exception of the last two that he has released.
@@charleswells8453 Great!!! We think the same mostly if we exclude your placement of Chaos! I think that at one point in my life i’ll be able to relate to that album a lot more
I have a problem with ranking as it implies that the Worst are bad. If an artist is as brilliant as McCartney, there is something good to find in each.😊 But our bar is so high, that we hold him to excellence every single time
@@colleensainsbury9022 very true. And while I never came across a musician who had so many different kinds of styles for each album (like if as it were some different person on each ) he manages to leave at least 2 or 3 great songs on every single of them
Mine from best to worst: Band on the Run Venus and Mars Tug of War Flaming Pie Ram Back to the Egg London Town Memory Almost Full McCartney McCartney III Chaos and Creation in the Backyard Egypt Station New Press to Play Pipes of Peace At the Speed of Sound Red Rose Speedway Off the Ground Wild Life McCartney II Flowers in the Dirt Driving Rain
Good point about the first McCartney album it sounds like demos to me too I felt the same with Wild Life was a slap dash production but those were seeds he planted for his solo career and work with WINGS. For me as someone who followed him in real time after the Beatles it was much filler to get to the killer songs and albums best albums 1. Tug of War 2. London Town 3. Wings over America 4. New 5. Chaos and Creation 6.RAM
That's a mandolin on "Dance Tonight." _Wild Life_ is hated precisely _because_ it is unfinished and boring, it was half an album for full price. And we did want a band album from Paul-and that band was The Beatles, lol, not this. The whole problem with Wings, exemplified on _Wings at the Speed of Sound_ but not limited to it, is because Paul's trying to have it both ways. On the one hand, all of us, you included, think these are McCartney albums, and they are. Yet at the same time, we also pretend it's really a band. Which is it? Are they solo albums or band albums? I know what we wanted at the time. No one bought those albums because they were anxious to hear the new Linda McCartney song, or the new Denny Laine song.
I actually like Pipes of Peace a lot more than Tug of War, in large part because the duets with Michael Jackson are much better than the duets with Stevie Wonder. Unfortunately, Pipes of Peace has two instrumentals in a row on it, which hurts the flow of the album. And I like Off the Ground a lot more than Flowers in the Dirt. With Off the Ground, Paul finally shook off the last remnants of that sterile 80s production which plagued his previous albums. Paul sounds re-energized on Off the Ground.
Good ranking, dude! Here’s mine: 22. Flowers in the Dirt (1989) By far his most overrated album. It starts off well with My Brave Face which I think is great, but after that, it’s pretty much all downhill, which a few songs that I think are among the worst songs in his whole catalog, including Rough Ride which was probably his absolutely worst song before Fuh You. I honestly couldn’t believe you had this album so high, y’know? Hehe. Yeah, the production is terrible, the synth sounds throughout the whole album are awful, and I don’t think him having Elvis Costello collaborating with him ends up being that fruitful. Yeah, it’s not a terrible album, but definitely my least favorite album of McCartney’s. Really bad album cover too, looks like a gas station CD that your grandma would own haha. 21. Driving Rain (2001) Probably his most bland and boring and unremarkable album, filled with a lot of late-U2-esque dad rock songs that kind of drag on, especially since it’s such a long album. There’s a couple of good songs tho. 20. Press to Play (1986) Not as bad as I was expecting and not as bad as it could’ve been, which I think is quite a testament to him. And, despite the bad 80s production, there is still a few decent and three really good songs. 19. Off the Ground (1993) Another one of those albums from the early 90s with bad production that’s stuck in the 80s, bad snare sound and all, but it has a small handful of decent to good songs. The songwriting ranges from good and really adventurous to pretty bad. 18. McCartney III (2020) Yep, the new one, and granted I’m glad he made it and gave it to us, but I don’t think it was all that worth the wait. His voice is unfortunately completely withered by this point, and while the production is pretty good and there are a few good songs and even a couple great ones, but it was kind of a disappointment overall. It getting to number one on the UK album charts for the first time in decades was well-deserved, but yeah. 17. Pipes of Peace (1983) Despite being an 80s Macca album (if you can’t tell, the 80s is my least favorite period of his), it’s actually slightly under-appreciated, at least on a song level. But, it does really struggle with that bad 80s production. 16. Tug of War (1982) This might be my most controversial placement, and I will probably get some shit for it. But, in my defense, there’s not much a reason why I have Tug of War this low except that I like the albums above it more. I think it’s a good album, and it has some good and a few great songs. It’s also by far his best 80s album. But: despite that, it has elements that hold it back. 15. New (2013) You’re right about this album really fitting title-wise and really feeling like someone *new* from Macca, especially this late in his career. The production is very modern now here, but it also sounds really well done for the early to mid 2010s. A good late period album. :) 14. Wild Life (1971) Yeah, I’m with you; I don’t think this album is bad and it doesn’t deserve *all* the hate it gets. Yes, there’s unfinished ditties and misguided tunes on it and that definitely holds it back, but at the same time a few great stand out songs. 13. Memory Almost Full (2007) A real good late period effort from Macca. Good production, good performances mostly all-‘round. :) 12. Egypt Station (2018) Idk..I quite enjoyed this album, and I actually think the production sounds good, especially for a 2018 album. Fuh You is definitely the worst song in his entire catalog, I will wholeheartedly give you that tho. ;) 11. McCartney II (1980) A very crazy and all-over-the-place, and I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t suffer at least somewhat for it, because it does. Having said that, there’s definitely some essential Macca songs to be found on here. Good album overall tho. 10. London Town (1978) Now we can into the real M E A T of the list lol. This may be the worst Wings album, but there’s still great songs on it for sure! And, we’re in really good albums from here on up. 9. Back to the Egg (1979) Wings were one foot out the door here, but still this album gives us some real treats and to me moreso than duds. Really good album. 8. Wings at the Speed of Sound (1976) All great albums from here on. I think just about every song on here besides the lame and bad Cook of the House and Must Do Something About it is at least enjoyable and a couple of his greatest songs. :) 7. McCartney (1970) This is where his solo career began, and it’s a really admirable first effort all things considered, mostly in hindsight because both this album and RAM were absolutely torn apart when they first came out. And, there’s definitely some unfinished jams on here that add up to mostly vague ideas, but it’s almost all enjoyable because it just shows his gift for melody and making a melody out of almost anything, anywhere, anytime. 6. Flaming Pie (1997) This was definitely his comeback album. The uptake and return to form is just astounding and outstanding. The warm, crisp and beautiful production by Jeff Lynne and George Martin working in tandem, the help from Steve Miller and Ringo, and the amazing chemistry between them all as well as the final contributions from Linda before her death all adds up to some absolute beautiful and great songs here. :3 5. Red Rose Speedway (1973) I love this album, and I honestly don’t think the divisive opinions are warranted for it. I honestly think it’s near perfect and one of his best! 4. Chaos and Creation in the Background (2004) I get where you’re coming from when you say this album is too downer or depressing for McCartney. That being said, I still love it and I actually do think it works, and that’s because: not only are the songs gorgeous and the songwriting personal and genuine and beautiful, but even in the darkest moments of the album, there is still hope and there’s still light at the end of the tunnel, and that just speaks volumes about the kind of artist and person that Paul is. This is the bottom of the top 4 albums in my ranking where I think there are absolutely no duds or weak moments! 🖤 3. Venus and Mars (1975) Probably Macca’s most 70s excess album, and it’s one of the best! Gorgeous warm 70s production, amazing songs, great playing, what more could you ask for? :3 💊 2. Band on the Run (1973) Here it is. And I struggled back and forth with whether this album or my number one would be..well..my number one, but it’s close and this album is perfect nonetheless, and totally deserving of being anyone’s number one Macca album! This was, proactively speaking, the album that saved Paul McCartney’s career, and it while it took a little bit to truly launch itself into public spotlight, it ended up being a huge commercial success and it won Paul back into the critics’ and public’s good graces, and it’s well deserved! The production is amazing, the sequencing is great, the playing and melody-work are impeccable, and many of the absolute best songs of Paul’s entire career are on this album, and all awesome certified bangers! A perfect career saver and a perfect album, but not quite #1…. 1. RAM (1971) In all honesty, I kinda didn’t want to out this album at #1, simply it’s all the rage these days, and I hate feeding into any sort of hipsterdom. But, I can’t help putting at the very top spot. It’s perfect, every last bit of it. It’s fucking incredible and odd, earthy, tender, perverse, lulling, rocking, sweet, tangy, driving, beautiful and honest, and it stands as my favorite solo album by any Beatle, and I think it stands up alongside the best Beatles albums extremely well-effortlessly even, similarly to how George’s All Things Must Pass does. Just every single song is awesome and beautiful and perfectly exemplifying of Paul McCartney and who he is as a person and an artist in the best ways. Best songs? The entire tracklist. It’s an album that celebrates small pleasures with big melodies, and it’s endlessly entertaining and interesting and joyous, and RAM is just one of the best albums ever made. I love it, the whole thing, and yes, my favorite Paul McCartney album. Perfect in every way, and it’s total bliss. A true 10/10 if ever there was one. 🤗🥹💙💛🐏
Best to worst imo: RAM Band on the Run Wings at the Speed of Sound Pipes of Peace Venus and Mars Tug of War Wild Life Egypt Station Memory Almost Full Red Rose Speedway Chaos and Creation in the Backyard London Town McCartney 2 McCartney Flaming Pie Flowers in the Dirt McCartney 3 NEW Off the Ground Driving Rain Press to Play
He mentioned it all at the beginning: no cover albums, no live albums. This involves covering his own songs and also when being live in the second world
For a guy who thinks he knows a lot about these albums he didn't know it's Big Barn Bed not Big Barn Red.Has he even listened to these albums.Makes me wonder.
@@peterwaterson1504 Yeah! My bad. And of course i’ve heard them all, surely you don’t think I haven’t just because of a slight tongue twisting moment huh?
Nobody Knows is my favorite song on McCartney II. It's Bogie music, not Boogie Music. Almost all the lyrics are "Bogie Music". Did you listen to the song? Big Barn Red? That said, your top 7 is close to mine. McCartney is my number 2 album. It sounds finished to me. We got this the same time as Let it Be, both released at the same time. It was like a double album, albeit with a lot of Paul songs. The McCartney album was guitars, drums, bass and piano; songs that could be played live. You know, like Let it Be was supposed to be. Biggest disagreements: Flowers in the Dirt barely makes my top 20. I liked Elvis, but not on the songs on this album. Press to Play and Egypt Station are my 8 and 9 albums. Driving Rain, number 12. Red Rose Speedway is near my bottom and New is my bottom.
Holy, I thought it was Boogie but pronounced by british people😂 what is a bogey then? I had no idea. Yeah, i don’t think McCartney 1 sounds unfinished because of the instrumentation. The instrumentation simply sounds too silky, it looses power in my opinion, but the again “bad” production can help an album at times
A cool list. I don't like Egypt Station much at all. It's more veneer than substance as the cover art shows. It feels like a slog. And I agree that DR is a weak album too. Again too drawn out and a bit of a slog at times. My top five are the same five as yours.

Omg your list is so different that’s amazing!! My #21 is in your top 3!!!
I think Press To Play is criminally underrated, he has worse albums, Pipes Of Peace is weaker and less interesting just to name one

Muchas gracias por tus comentarios, personalmente prefiero a los Beatles pero Paul’s solo work tambien esta super alto
I was a teenager in the 70s and wings became my favorite band. I love all wings albums, them being different, and not many later albums come close to the wings period. Wings over america
@@FrankHansen-e9p Wings Over America in my opinion is one of the best live albums of all time!!
@@Luna.reviewstotally agree…

@@FrankHansen-e9p Actually hell yeah!!!

Loup (First Indian on the moon) is a killer track. That bass line is amazing
I say Ram #1 and Back to the Egg #2....I have been alive since the 1950s
Holy! So you were in your 20s when all of it was happening? That’s amazing
The production of Off the Ground is amazing. It just sound so good, but I also like Flaming Pie better.
To me #1 is flaming pie
Ram is the most criminally underrated album of all time
@@louisdellavalle2159 Indeed! Although nowadays it gets a fair share of love. Back then they fucking demolished the album
I don't think it's underrated
Actually, I'd say that London Town is the most underrated album of all time.
No longer.
I think Red Rose is stronger than Band On the Run even as a 1-disc album. It's so full of energy and ambition.
@@thehighllama8101 off the ground is actually my second favourite album of Paul's. Generally I like his 90s era the most
I like Press To Play more than all of them
I’m sorry, the pure existence of Motor of Love on FITD alone means it can’t be in the top 15 for me. We Got Married and My Brave Face are good tho
Flowers in the dirt above Venus and mars? Idk man
Good ranking, dude!
Here’s mine:
22. Flowers in the Dirt (1989)
By far his most overrated album.
21. Driving Rain (2001)
Probably his most bland and boring and unremarkable album, filled with a lot of late-U2-esque dad rock songs that kind of drag on, especially since it’s such a long album. There’s a couple of good songs tho.
20. Press to Play (1986)
Not as bad as I was expecting and not as bad as it could’ve been, which I think is quite a testament to him. And, despite the bad 80s production, there is still a few decent and three really good songs.
19. Off the Ground (1993)
Another one of those albums from the early 90s with bad production that’s stuck in the 80s, bad snare sound and all, but it has a small handful of decent to good songs. The songwriting ranges from good and really adventurous to pretty bad.
18. McCartney III (2020)
Yep, the new one, and granted I’m glad he made it and gave it to us, but I don’t think it was all that worth the wait. His voice is unfortunately completely withered by this point, and while the production is pretty good and there are a few good songs and even a couple great ones, but it was kind of a disappointment overall. It getting to number one on the UK album charts for the first time in decades was well-deserved, but yeah.
17. Pipes of Peace (1983)
Despite being an 80s Macca album (if you can’t tell, the 80s is my least favorite period of his), it’s actually slightly under-appreciated, at least on a song level. But, it does really struggle with that bad 80s production.
16. Tug of War (1982)
This might be my most controversial placement, and I will probably get some shit for it. But, in my defense, there’s not much a reason why I have Tug of War this low except that I like the albums above it more. I think it’s a good album, and it has some good and a few great songs. It’s also by far his best 80s album. But: despite that, it has elements that hold it back.
15. New (2013)
You’re right about this album really fitting title-wise and really feeling like someone *new* from Macca, especially this late in his career. The production is very modern now here, but it also sounds really well done for the early to mid 2010s. A good late period album. :)
14. Wild Life (1971)
Yeah, I’m with you; I don’t think this album is bad and it doesn’t deserve *all* the hate it gets. Yes, there’s unfinished ditties and misguided tunes on it and that definitely holds it back, but at the same time a few great stand out songs.
13. Memory Almost Full (2007)
A real good late period effort from Macca. Good production, good performances mostly all-‘round. :)
12. Egypt Station (2018)
Idk..I quite enjoyed this album, and I actually think the production sounds good, especially for a 2018 album. Fuh You is definitely the worst song in his entire catalog, I will wholeheartedly give you that tho. ;)
11. McCartney II (1980)
A very crazy and all-over-the-place, and I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t suffer at least somewhat for it, because it does. Having said that, there’s definitely some essential Macca songs to be found on here. Good album overall tho.
10. London Town (1978)
Now we can into the real M E A T of the list lol. This may be the worst Wings album, but there’s still great songs on it for sure! And, we’re in really good albums from here on up.
9. Back to the Egg (1979)
Wings were one foot out the door here, but still this album gives us some real treats and to me moreso than duds. Really good album.
8. Wings at the Speed of Sound (1976)
All great albums from here on. I think just about every song on here besides the lame and bad Cook of the House and Must Do Something About it is at least enjoyable and a couple of his greatest songs. :)
7. McCartney (1970)
This is where his solo career began, and it’s a really admirable first effort all things considered, mostly in hindsight because both this album and RAM were absolutely torn apart when they first came out. And, there’s definitely some unfinished jams on here that add up to mostly vague ideas, but it’s almost all enjoyable because it just shows his gift for melody and making a melody out of almost anything, anywhere, anytime.
6. Flaming Pie (1997)
This was definitely his comeback album. :3
5. Red Rose Speedway (1973)
I love this album, and I honestly don’t think the divisive opinions are warranted for it. I honestly think it’s near perfect and one of his best!
4. Chaos and Creation in the Background (2004)
I get where you’re coming from when you say this album is too downer or depressing for McCartney. 🖤
3. Venus and Mars (1975)
Probably Macca’s most 70s excess album, and it’s one of the best! Gorgeous warm 70s production, amazing songs, great playing, what more could you ask for? :3 💊
2. Band on the Run (1973)
Here it is.
1. RAM (1971)
In all honesty, I kinda didn’t want to out this album at #1, simply it’s all the rage these days, and I hate feeding into any sort of hipsterdom. 🤗🥹💙💛🐏

Ram is a masterpiece.
McCartney was a decent album.. So was Ram.

@@peterwaterson1504 Yeah! My bad.
And of course i’ve heard them all, surely you don’t think I haven’t just because of a slight tongue twisting moment huh?
Egypt Station is better than New to me
Nobody Knows is my favorite song on McCartney II.
