Im a pilot and not a jumper, but, there HAS to be a special satisfaction in jumping a chute that YOU packed. When it works well, YOU made it work and in this case, perfection is more than a goal, it's everything. Great video, thanks for sharing !
I really like how simple you explained things and in a short video 👌🏻 just got my A license and have packed 2 times so far and I watch refresher videos all the time and this is the easiest to comprehend vs. a long 30 minute video of explaining everything in such detail that it’s overwhelming and forget what you just learned. Thanks man!! 🤘🏻 blue skies!! 🪂
And your back up should always be packed by a certified rigger so even if your main messes up your most likey good very rarely do people have both fail
All of this preparation for a split second of action, this video truly amazes me. There is so much margin for error that it's astonishing you almost never ever hear of a parachute packing failure these guys are good at what they do. Hats off to them indeed.
Thank you Paul for this video, i took my packing class today and aced it, class was over in less than 1 and a 1/2 hrs. from start to finish. packed my first chute perfectly, cant wait to jump it tomorrow morning. My rigger told me he has never had a student pack a chute the first time, on the very first try as well as i did. Thanks again
Much appreciated! I've taught the same parachute packing course using the same shtick for a few years now ... it's based on feedback from students to tightened up the essentials and clean up the jargon.
@@paratechies338 It is nearly 3AM 3 years after you posted your reply here and I am done watching your video. I have NEVER watched someone pack a parachute(correctly) and was always curious if it was as easy or more involved than the clips in movies of people just rolling them up like sleeping bags. Now I know. I won't ever be a parachuter. Unless it is a last step to saving my life from a failing plane.(obviously at that point it is not my chute and it has been pre-packed for just such an emergency). Flying planes seemed easier for me to get a grasp on than this. lol. If I were ever in need of folding a parachute in some bizarre scenario tho, now I have at least seen it done properly once.
And now if only I could apply these methods towards my life.. "Structured" "Balanced" "maintained" "fluffy" "prepared" ECT...... ECT...... ECT.... .. .. . .
I was fortunate enough to watch the Blue Angels crew pack chutes at an airshow! They spent like hours carefully rolling and packing them. The whole crew is insanely on point.
I've never jumped, never even been close but one day when I cam afford it I will. That's beside the point. If I'm going to use it, I want to know how it works. Makes sense how chutes open now. Gage me a little more confidence in wanting to. My main reason for commenting. I teach audio and I know what it's like making things plain while making it understood completely. U did a fantastic job teaching. Enough repetition to make it stick and plain English. Karate chop. Lol! I could go on but I wont. Hell of an instructor.
Helped me alot to learn how to pack so thanks for that, i constantly watched this video once i got my first rig and just jumped my first unassisted pack job because of this video so thank you
Nice video. I got back into the sport after a 2 decade hiatus and was flat packing back then. Once my new Spectre gets broken in, I plan to start pro-packing to save time and $$ with the packers. (and just to be self-sufficient again!!)
I was amazed at how little of what I see a skydiver wearing on their back is actually the primary chute. I am also amuse by how strong and rugged they seem to be to manhandled like that.
Thank you!! Wonderful and concise video. Great job. I'm going to be watching this video on repeat in an attempt to impress my skydiving boyfriend by being able to pack his chute... wish me luck!!
you should never roll up a tent or sleeping bag, you'll get creases in the fabric will cause premature failure, especially to the waterproof tent fabric ;-) Tents, tarps & sleeping bags should be STUFFED into a bag :)
I've always wanted to go sky diving. I am seriously reconsidering it now that I've seen how so many things can go wrong just be someone not packing the parachute correctly.
You will be attaced to a tandem instructor that has done this hundreds of times and knows every thread and sew. They dont just wad it up and give it to someone after a jump. The reserve is packed by a licensed professional. And must be repacked after a certain time.
Dude i got my skydiving license 2 years ago an i still have a problem with it 😆 its nessisary though because you don't wanna be the only person at the drop zone that can't pack lmao
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching it. You made it seem so much easier than when I learned to pack one for my B license. Now I want to get myself my own chute! Any suggestions on what type?
There isn't a lot you can do wrong. Even though he was tucking in things here and there, once you start squashing it down, things move. We had a perfectionist packing his chute. It took him forever, even got his iron out to get out the wrinkles. [Joking] and he still had a malfunction. I was pretty quick at it, but I still did a flat pack. Somehow got it in the bag with a lot of punching etc. And I never had a fail, just a small line twist. So don't be to worried of being perfect, but don't be blaze about it. Anyway, I haven't jumped for a while, but your video makes me want to jump again and pack your way. Seems more comfortable then crawling around the floor. Thanks
That was my question, how important is each step, seems very complicated, would love to know what causes them to fail/have issues and how much of that is due to making a mistake in the packing process. The analogy I got was this is akin to sewing and making your bed, two things I'm not that great at, best I stay grounded!!
I watched this video on the way to the dropzone while i was a student. First jump that morning i had a bowtie malfunctuion & cutaway. landed the reserve fine. Ironically i then was told to pack my chute for the first time, took me over 45 minutes 😂 and went and jumped it, opened well! lol Thanks for the great video!
Tiny packing errors happen frequently, resulting in line twists, line-overs, steering handles that get stuck or just a rough opening. Twists are usually easy to remove during the jump, line-overs depend a lot, all you can do is pump the steering lines a couple times and hope it solves.
Im not sure how i ended up here, and will likely never get to skydive, but i always made ny own parachutes for my action figures as a kid. I always wondered how they were packed. I always figured the flaps on the bag opened and the parachute fell out. Looks like the weight of the skydiver opposite the drag on the pilot chute pulls the canopy out of the container bag?
laying down on the pack job slows things down, can negatively effect the the flaking you did previously, and can be easily remedied; PD has a good video showing this
I don't mean stand packing. You can deflate your canopy on the ground without lying down on it. PD has a good video on this on their channel showing how to pack a Sabre 2 150.
If you were to buy your first parachute, would you trust how they packed it or repack it yourself before the jump, which one are you? Ps. Of course you can ask a pro to repack or check for you, but which of the former if you had to choose?
A whole lot of work for a few minutes of fun. Do you guys have multiple parachutes so you can go back up and jump again or are out done for the day then?
I have two questions(well aactuallyI have a number of questions, but I will not waste anyone's time w/all my questions, seeing I'm not a skydiver/base jumper). What is a slider's purpose/what's it used for?? I'm guessing skydiver & base jumping chutes are the same, do all parachutes have reserve chutes in them?? THX for any info I can get, I've always been curious of skydiving & even more curious how to pack a chute. I know zero on this sport, other then what this vid spoke of.
Bill. The slider slows down the opening of the canopy so it doesn't inflate too quick and cause opening shock to the skydiver (we are falling at 80 - 120 mph when we open the canopy). Skydive and Base canopies are similar but there are fundamental differences between them. The base canopy are larger and have less "cells" - they are designed to open more reliably and be more docile than a skydive canopy. All skydive rigs have a reserve - base rigs do not have a reserve as you open lower than a reserve can make any difference. A skydive reserve is packed very differently than the "main canopy' that you see on the video - a skydive reserve is "flat packed" like a base canopy. Watch the packing video for a base canopy to see what i mean.
I just watched a war movie about so I figured I'd find out how to pack a parachute. I don't know why because I am afraid of heights and have no use for a parachute. I also have attention deficit disorder and just missed half of the instructions.
why do you push in parts of the front canopy with your knee? doesn´t this pull all your carefully assorted lines apart? i can always feel when this happans while kneeing onto the canopy to push the air out
