I have fixed 2 misaligned bezel inserts with isopro alcohol (more easily available in my locality) using this methodology. It is so much easier than prying the bezel off. I wish I saw this vid earlier. Thank you so much Mark for sharing this vid 👍👍🙏🙏
I think rather than use a cup I would suggest a small lid off a jar or bottle. That way you can precisely control the depth of the fluid and submersion.
I can't even begin to count how many watch cases I've scratched trying to remove bezels. Thank you so much for this tip! I'll make sure to keep it in mind the next time I mod one of my watches.
The pip on my Seiko just fell out and I was googling new bezel inserts and then I open up UA-cam and this is the first thing on my recommendations list. Sometimes it's good that big brother is always watching....
Hi Marc, Tried this technique on one of my watch bezel inserts with the grip solvent and it came off no problem after 24 hours and has worked a treat - Great tip!! Thanks very much. Cheers Noel
Tried this today. Had it sitting in a bottle cap so as not to soak the entire watch. Only took 3 hours and the bezel insert basically just dropped right out. Magical!
Hi, Mark! Thank you so much for this tip. After watching your video, I was able to replace the worn-out bezel insert on my Ray II with ease. I love the watch as it has been with me ever since I have started my trucking job and it is an awesome care-free work watch. Love it! and now thanks to your Watch and Learn series it got a new life! It's a blew Ray II, and now it has and nice-looking silver insert (thank to your Yachtmaster'ish ISL-18, which I am planning on purchasing this year). Thanks again, and keep up with your great educational efforts!
Just got around to trying this. Bought the same stuff and used the same method demonstrated by Marc. Worked like a charm! Between my new bezel and strapcode bracelet, it’s like I have a brand new Triton! Thanks Marc!
Great tip. Thanks for sharing. I have used acetone in the past to remove bezel insert with great success. And it took less than a hour in acetone that did the trick.
You can also lay the watch flat on the table, dial side up, and just drop a couple drops on the bezel and crystal. Capillary action and gravity will pull it under the bezel. Just lay a piece of plastic wrap over it to prevent evaporation and to hold and excess in place. Even easier.
@@WestCoastAce27 I'm here to realign a San martin insert, but I gotta say I hope everything worked out for you bc having to realign the bezel of a 3k watch is ridiculous what watch do you have, one of the 8L35 Willard/turtles?????
I just did exactly the same thing except I used some Goo Gone I had laying around. Yesterday afternoon I added just enough to soak just the insert and nothing else. Came home from work today and it popped right off. Cleaned it up real good getting rid of the leftover adhesive and solvent with warm water and then made sure it was clean with a cotton swab and alcohol. Replaced the insert nicely. Easy peasy.
Cool! I used to remove the pip and hook it through the hole. Then I discovered prying up the bezel (without removing) enough to get a gap on the crystal side to pry up on. And now this! Thanks Mark.
Solution works great to loosen the stickum as Mark says. Beware though, it might effect the rubber gasket on the inside of the bezel. Last week I removed two bezels that misaligned inserts. Two Seikos and one Orient. One Seiko was fine, the other Seiko's gasket seems to have been shrunk. I ended up removing the bezel on one because the click spring was broken and needed to be removed for replacement. I noticed that the rubber gasket was now small and didn't fit into the groove on the bezel. Strange. Ordered another one. On the Orient there is some new found resistance as well as some squeaking. This watch was brand new so maybe the gasket shrunk a bit. I will be applying some oil between the narrow gap on this one in the hopes of lubricating the gasket/underside of the bezel. Just keep this in mind. You may experience what I experienced.
Ditto. Squeaky gasket and bezel difficult to turn. May be the Seiko gasket compound? However, IPA pipetted into a jar lid so that it just covers the bezel; 2 hours and careful prise with a scalpel blade before working a larger plastic probe between the insert and the bezel works fine. No squeaks; no sticking. Bit of cleaning required with some peg wood though. Tried acetone once with an aluminium insert (Seiko again) and it started to remove the 'paint' after less than a minute. IPA the way to go.
Hey Mark, I just got done removing and replacing my Kermit bezel insert on my Casio Duro with a new insert. I followed you directions to the letter, even found the exact adhesive solvent you used, and it worked perfectly. The insert came right out and the tape residue pulled out in one strip. Thanks for taking the guess work out of this simple mod. Best.
Thanks Mark. This is going to come in very handy as my bezal insert fell out in the surf yesterday. The watch is only a month old.🙁 The seller was very good to deal with and a new one is already on it's way. Luckily I don't have to remove the old one. Love all your you tube videos. Cheers from Australia. 😊
Worked an absolute treat in about 3 hours on an insert where the tape had sweated (I hadn't peeled it) but the insert was otherwise glued in for keeps! When I bought the golf grip spray from EBAY I was still thinking - really? But it does work. The insert literally fell out under gravity.
Thanks for the information Mark. I also did the same thing with the Goo Gone on one of my higher end Seikos. Just turned the watch over onto its face for less then 24 hours with the bezel barely submerged in the Goo Gone and my insert slid right out the next morning. Easy and didn't risk scratching my case or crystal. Keep up the videos !!!!!
Was going to buy the grip solvent but since I've already got goo gone at home, I'll give that a try first. Thanks for the comment & possibly saving me some $
Hallelujah -- love the idea of "easy bezel ring replacement for dummies-method"-- perfect for me. Been unable to get the bezel off the SKX I bought for modding, despite my (relatively) strong hands and use of a variety of watch tools -- and, to win the "d'oh!" award, I even I managed to scratch the replacement band I had already put on the watch. Will try this pronto to bring the beautiful ceramic replacement I bought from you out of the cold and onto my watch!
Excellent hack. I received a Heimdallr "Willard" with an insert that had a slight imperfection and my OCD will not allow for this flaw to go unnoticed. This seems like the most non-invasive way to correct it.
I literally just did this on SPRK29 with the SKX013 ceramic bezel I purchased from Long Island Watch, but now the bracelet looks a bit cheap against its new bezel. Had to go back to Long Island for a bracelet upgrade as well. Great company and great information! I wouldn't have been able to pop that bezel to be honest.
Another cool thing is that if you swab the bezel surface with the grip tape before installing the insert, you can make fine adjustments to the bezel alignment if necessary.

Sweet. Imma have to do this when i switch out my squale 1521 insert. The little screws are warped so i cannot take the bezel off at all. This method is my saving grace, thank you sir.
That was great, Marc. I must say, though, that I replaced two inserts using the same basic method. The main difference was that I soaked the watch in isopropyl alcohol for a few minutes. It worked as slick as the golf club grip tape remover.
This looks like a great method. Just a heads up for the people asking about using Goo Gone. I just put a Dawn Grey bezel insert on my ISL-28 and used Goo Gone to take off the original sapphire bezel insert because I wanted to save it. The Goo Gone removed the paint from the underside of the sapphire bezel insert and ruined it. I also don’t know if it’ll make the seals swell as I removed my bezel and took the gasket out before soaking it.
I used white spirit as solvent, and applied it with the empty case of an old pen in order to not have the solvent everywhere. The insert came off after 20 minutes, and I removed it with a scalpel. Bezel aligned, job done. Thank you so much...
Don't even worry about sourcing this specific golf grip solvent. This method worked perfectly with simple 50% isopropyl alcohol. I soaked it only for an hour and a half and very carefully pried it up with an exacto blade. No fancy solvents, no risk of damaging any metals or coatings, evaporates quickly. Note, this only worked since the insert was secured with a double sided adhesive. Not sure if it would work so well with contact cement or other adhesives.

Hi everyone, Many adhesives, but especially double-sided adhesives, are synthetic solvent-based adhesives. Therefore, they dissolve with a synthetic solvent. The strongest of the synthetic solvents and the one that does not harm the material is the synthetic-based thinner. I do the same process in 2-3 hours. I don't need to wait 24-48 hours. Likewise, when I take the watch 2-3 hours later, which I left in a very small amount of synthetic thinner with the bezel down, the watch and the bezel insert are already separated by themselves. The worst part of this process is that synthetic thinner is harmful to human health and smells bad. For this reason, this process should not be done inside the house, but in the garage or on the table on the deck. The watch inside the synthetic thinner and the container in which you put it should stay outside in a ventilated place for 2-3 hours. When the process is over, both the watch and the bezel insert and hands should be washed several times with plenty of soapy water. In other words, it is very easy to separate the bezel insert from the watch, but the stages of attention to health and cleaning are more difficult. Here, I should emphasize that the thinner to be used is SYNTHETIC THINNER. NEVER USE CELLULOSIC THINNER. THIS VARIETY OF THINNER IS BOTH MUCH MORE HARMFUL TO HEALTH AND SERIOUSLY DAMAGES THE WATCH BECAUSE IT HAS A VERY THIN STRUCTURE AND IS VERY SHARP.
Yes. I wouldn't recommend this method it all, as it will remove most of the oils from the bezel gasket and dry it out. A much safer method is to use lower % isopropyl alcohol/ethanol and dab into the gap between the external bezel edges and insert, which will produce the same result and is much less chemically volatile. Petroleum distillates are used to remove (as the name suggests) oil.
My question is, what is the main ingredient in this that is dissolving the tape? This product isn't available in the UK and I'd like to find the best equivalent.
Finally, something useful from the world of golf

Hey! What kind of solvent should I use? Only tape solvent will do?
Hmm, interesting. I was trying to use a natural solvent (vinegar). We shall see if it works
Hi! Can you tell me the name of the synthetic thinner that you used?
Useful video! Marc, I have one question though: could the solvent compromise the integrity of the bezel gasket? Thanks!
Where to get such a double side tape for the bezel ?
@@nsjong Can I use hand sanitizer containing isopropyl alcohol or WD-40?
Me before finishing the vid: Don't you dare!
Me after watching: 🤯
Mind blown!
Quick question!! Does it ruin the paint on seiko bezels?? I want to realign it
This proved helpful had to remove misaligned bezel and put it back on correctly - thank you Mark
Thanks for this! I was able to remove and replace the bezel insert on my Marathon TSAR.
I'm floored how that was easy! 😲
Thanks for sharing.
Can this work with ceramic bezel too?
Will this solvent affect AR coatings?
Will this effect AR coating? Thanks
Hey Mark, do you still remove bezel inserts like this?
Do you have ceramic bezel that fits that phoibos?
My question is, what is the main ingredient in this that is dissolving the tape? This product isn't available in the UK and I'd like to find the best equivalent.
Hi. I’m just about to try this. May I ask does the watch face and bezel completely need to be submerged in the solution?
Thanks for posting. U have a great company and are a wonderful resource.
may be I am late to your show.. But trust me ..I loved it.. Lots of Love from India
That's rad, I just need to figure out sizing and where to find different styles etc and I'd love to try that! Thanks!
