I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
Great info. I am a big time drop shot fisherman. One other way to rig it is wacky rig it. On quite a few instances when the fish quit biting the other presentations I just take the worm off and wacky rig it and get bit right after presenting the normal rig and they quit biting it. It happened just this past weekend. I was targeting the same small school and got an extra bite by switching it up.
thanks for sharing!
Thanks Matt great info just thought I'd mention, when using your link to purchase the nishine ds hook the product video is an excellent explanation of tying the smell knot on that hook , keep up the good work congratulations on the win !!!
Awesome thank you!
Thanks I am going to make some changes because of this info,
awesome!
Great video on hook choices for drop shot rigs. Thanks again Matt.
thanks!
\
Thanks Matt , I have backed off the drop shot, I'm using a hover rig on a bobber and bobber stop!..
awesome!
Great information! I finally found my first success with a drop shot this spring. I'll take all the information I can get.
awesome!
Great info Matt. Unlike most, I like fishing the drop shot and use it in a variety of situations. I use all 3 of the hooks you showed but the Roboworm and hook are my go to here in Southern CA. I have gone as large as a 2/0 hook and 7" worm for a "power shot" presentation. Thanks again ... Davis
Thanks for sharing!
Dude. Again, congratulations on that big win.
Thank you!
Great run down on the dropshot hooks!!! I love the Fusion hooks and the Rob hooks as well, I would say more so the Robo hook because of all the brushpiles that I fish.
sounds good!
Getting close to 50k! I certainly need to work the drop shot more in my arsenal and and appreciate another solid tip from the channel in a great year!
yep!
Great explanation, very concise
Glad you liked it
I’ve always used Standout’s drop shot hook. It’s unique hook shape helps with the hook standing upright and out where it doesn’t kilter that result in lower hookup ratios and offering proper bait presentation with better hookup results, TW carries them too.
thanks for sharing!
Robo hooks are the deal in cover!
they are solid!
Great tips thank you I haven't thought of that last one
Glad it was helpful!
Great instruction - thanx a lot, Matt! 👌💯
My pleasure!
I use the VMC Standout hooks for all my drop shot fishing. Easy to tie on using a Palomar knot. and pretty much guaranteed to stay horizontal
thanks for sharing!
🍺Thanks Matt🤠.
you bet!
I don't really get to fish a drop shot too much in my home waters, but when I do, that snell knot trick really comes in handy! I use some 1/0 jig making hooks that I have and a trick worm or Roboworm worm and I am definitely oddly getting a lot more bites!
awesome!
I use the VMC swivel shot as well as the Gamakatsu one. My fingers and my eyes are not what they used to be so these are easier to use. I don't like the extra hardware that the fish can see but the swivel shot does help with line twist. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. 😂
thanks for sharing!
I use a lot of Texas rig drop shot on the kayak. It’s surprisingly good through cover and I have at least something I can throw at any depth and most situations. I also use drop shot a lot shore fishing with a big weight because it casts so far and I can cover water thoroughly. I use VMC neko because I can find them locally.
sounds good
Good info, thanks Matt
Thanks!
I use the Owner Mosquito light hook, size 2 or size 1 depending on where I am fishing. Also the Owner Cover Shot hooks are good too. Going weedless, I will use an EWG hook. Great advice about people overworking the bait. Just let it sit there for the most part. Thanks Matt.
Thanks for sharing
Great tips! I have never fished the drop shot, but I’ll definitely give it a try !🎣🎣🎣🎣
thanks for watching!
I love the Nishine drop shot hook (and their drop shot minnow!) $$$
yes they are!
Hi Matt. Great video. I’m new to drop shot fishing. But catching a few. How long are you making your leader? I was going about 5 feet. Tied to braid. Cheers.
my leader line is 10 to 20 ft with the dropshot leader generally about 12"
I will get me some hooks soon! Need to try this out myself! I have flatworms and roboworms now.. I make my own as well...
awesome!
I've used a small 1/0 ewg for weedless presentation with reasonably good success. Only reason being is it's what was in the box.
sounds good!
Pretty much the way I go with the hooks. Commonly I use four inch worm, Berkley minnow baits or leachs. And small mouth love this set up too.
Good stuff!
You should make a Core tackle snelled drop shot hook that you can Texas rig. Like a nishine/rebarb hybrid
that would be cool
That roboworm hook is my fave, even in open water. I prefer the light wire one in the size 2 or size 1 because I do a ton of bank fishing where I cast and drag the dropshot back to me. I feel it cuts down on snags especially around rock with the hook point hidden in the bait.
awesome! thanks for sharing!
Great info Matt, thanks!
You bet!
what about the swivel hooks, they get tangled with the sinker alot less. any downside to them? thanks. enjoy your channel
Not much
That Nishine hook is SHARP and the fish stay stuck!
agreed!
I’ve been using those Roboworm Hooks since they came out for Texas Rig dropshot or Finesse Carolina or Finesse Texas Rigged. For nose hook. I use either the Owner Light Wire Mosquito or Gamakatsu GFinesse. And yes I agree smallest hook possible, based on the thickness of the bait. I do want to try the Nishine hook
thanks for sharing
@@MattStefanFishing you’re welcome
Matt, What size Rebarb Drop Shot hook do you generally use for 4" to 6" robo worms?
Size 1 or 1/0
On the small #2 drop shot hooks I just start reeling when a fish takes the lure and the hook sets itself in a fishes mouth. With the longer hook which I Texas rig I often don’t get the hook set in the fish. How do you set the hook using the longer hooks?
if its texas rigged you need to do a big sweep hook
Matt, I’m assuming you’re still using a Palomar with the tag dropped through the hook eye for hooks other than the snelled Nishine. Have you tried the knot that resembles a tagless blood knot for hook attachment? You ought to check it out at the work bench while referencing the available vids. It’s a hit if you want a perfectly vertical hook presentation. Give it a look if you’re still doing the Palomar.
ill give it a try!
What is a good depth to use for the drop shot? I only bank fish.
Thanks
you can fish it at any depth
I have 2 poles rigged with 2 different hooks one being the no.2 dropshot hook and the other a rebo hook with a robo worm. Don't have time to retie when I want to change up
sounds good
Good video
Thanks
Do you drop straight down on em. I just started with this technique because I always considered it a vertical jigging style technique. Me being a bank angler primarily I just stayed away from it. But recently I tied one up casted in some 20 ft depth areas and slowly reeled it back making sure to feel the rocks on bottom. I got 4 bass 3lb class in under an hour on a normally 1 fish spot. So I'm in love now. Lol. But do you cast and drag it ever? Not side sweeping but high tip 10 or 11 and slowly reel very slowly. It worked for me.
i prefer to cast a drop shot
@@MattStefanFishing thanks Matt. That gives me an idea on how to work it and use it effectively and efficiently.
Great info as always! Quick question, you just admitted yourself that's its the middle of summer, so why are you wearing a hoodie? 😂🥵 You sir are a Madman! Congrats on your latest win BTW!
He’s in Wisconsin. It’s been low 50s multiple times this week in upstate ny so they probably aren’t far off
haha my basement is ALWAYS 60 degrees and we actually just had a couple of days that barely broke 70 with lows in the upper 40's
Good info thank you Matt . Do you think a dropshot is a good technique to use from the bank?
If you can reel it in without getting snagged it’s good anywhere
yes
Hi Matt- I use the VMC Spinshot to prevent line twists, size 1. Do you have any thoughts on using that? good? bad? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Thanks so much. Tight lines! Jack
i havent had great luck with the spinshot but havent given it enough try
As a bank anglr typically fish my dropshot with a 1/0 Gamakatsu worm hook.
sounds good
I saw you threw a drop shot some in the tournament you won. What was the reason and conditions that you found it necessary to do so?
it was a good change of pass when the wind was blowing
Did you mention what your use for whacky?
i prefer a wide gap finesse hook
👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
What's your favorite dropshot bait
berkley maxscent flat worm
@@MattStefanFishing thanks I'm new to dropshot fishing definitely going to buy some
I have a question. Why not put a jig on the end of your line instead of a drop shot weight? We use a rig like that for flounder with a jig on the bottom and a "teaser" a foot or so above the jig. Sometimes they hit the jig, sometimes the teaser. The teaser is usually a baitholder hook and Gulp swimming mullet, sometimes with a skirt of bucktail. So that makes me think you could use a bass jig with your drop shot and maybe catch them on either bait.
you can do that but its illegal in the tournaments I fish
@@MattStefanFishing ah, that makes sense.
