@@josh72456 No Clint Eastwood randomly went up to Jeff Daniels and told him that the toilet scene happened to him in real life. While they were at some fundraiser golf tournament thing. Started laughing, and just walked away. Then some years later when Eastwood cast him in a movie he was directing he told Daniels he offered him the part because 'If you can do 2 Days in the Valley and you can do Dumb & Dumber, you can do this.' I love the idea that despite Eastwood on the outside for the past 30 years looks like he's a grumpy old grandpa who has seen it all. Not only can appreciate it, but understood exactly why Daniels did Dumb and Dumber to begin with. @@shoshoni_rezdog I forgot that line was in the movie as I hadn’t seen it in so long so I legit laughed out loud when I heard it again in this review 😂
Another Fun Fact: During filming, Jim Carrey stayed the night at the Stanley Hotel and requested to stay in the infamous room 217 (Stephen King's: The Shining). According to the tour guide at the hotel, about three hours after Carrey went to sleep, he came running out of the room and left the hotel. To this day, he vows to never go back and won't tell anybody why.
Another Fun Fact: According to the Farrelly brothers, Jeff Daniels wasn't wanted for the film, but Jim Carrey wanted him in it. In order to ensure a no from him, they offered Daniels $50,000 for the role. He accepted without any hesitation nor did he attempt to negotiate, despite insistence from his agent the film would "kill his career." By 1994, the film was Daniels' most successful.
Honestly? I don't know what career at the time that agent was looking at to NOT say "sigh, fine, go ahead". Lost a Lead Actor nomination for Purple Rose of Cairo to fellow box office dud Runaway Train, not been in anything even artistically relevant since Radio Days. Even if it would be embarrassing, this dumb thing was going to be noticeable.
Fun fact about the film. Sea Bass is played by Cam Neely, a winger who used to play for the Boston Bruins. He even admitted during on a podcast that the scene where he runs into Jim Carrey at the truck stop bathroom, he had to do like 30 takes because the reaction he was given wasn’t surprising enough. After a brief conversation with him, the very next take, Jim Carrey ended up mooning him and Cams reaction to it was the take they used.

Another Fun Fact: According to Jeff Daniels, none of the scenes between Jim Carrey and himself were filmed during the first week of production because the studio was fully prepared to replace him in the role, even going so far as to have a comedian on standby waiting to take the role. However, after viewing the dailies and constant insistence from Carrey that a real actor (as opposed to a comedian) play opposite him to "ground him," the studio ultimately allowed Daniels to keep the role.

What makes the toilet scene even funnier in the extended version on DVD is Harry resorting to remove the toilet off the floor and emptying it out of the window.
The most underrated joke for me is when Mary is watching Hard Copy and says "Who are these sick people?" and then you instantly hear the doorbell ring and you know it's Lloyd.. that is some genius stuff haha..
Another fun fact: he thought the toilet scene was gonna end him. He told the Farrelly bros right before they shot it that this is either the beginning of his career or the end of it
My favorite joke in the film is when Harry and Mary are on their 'date' and she playfully hits him with a snowball and in return he pegs her in the face with one
The one joke that took me 25 years to realize is when they get to Aspen and they're trying remember Mary's last name, and Lloyd looks at the briefcase and realizes the last name is Samsonite. Never really got the humor there until I worked at a Best Buy about 5 years ago and they sold Samsonite laptop bags....This whole time he was just looking at the briefcase's logo and I still can't stop laughing about it
There was another alternative ending were the owner of the 5 star hotel they stayed in offers them a free room and a job saying they can look after his grandson who turns out to be the little blind boy they sold the dead bird to.
Another Fun Fact: Not only was Jim Carrey's "Big Gulps, huh?" in Dumb and Dumber improvised, the Big Gulpers weren't even extras. They were hanging out watching the filming and the director Peter Farrelly put them in a scene.
Yeah, I'm one of those people that's not a fan of this movie, but you are right there is at least one scene that always gets a laugh out of me. "You wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?"
What was always amazing to me is Daniel’s had 2 big hits that year being this and Speed. 2 completely opposite characters and he played them both perfectly
Another Fun Fact: An early draft of the film had Mel Gibson as Mary's husband, playing himself in a cameo role. This was going to be a gag because at the time, Gibson was one of Hollywood's biggest heartthrobs, and somebody like Lloyd Christmas couldn't possibly hope to compete with him.
Really? Very interesting. Another fun fact: this movie was originally written by John Hughes, but he sold the script to the Farrelly bros and asked that his name not be credited
The directly reference it in the Director's cut (in the "Mary Christmas. This is Mary Christmas. Kinda catchy, heh?" deleted scene). Kinda glad they removed it, the joke was already super obvious without spelling it out for the audience.
Another Fun Fact: The hotel, bar and Lamborghini scenes were shot at The Historical Stanley Hotel in Estes Park CO. The "We landed on the moon" photo in the bar remains on the wall. The Stanley was the inspiration for Stephen King's The Shining.
Crowning achievement is somehow still an understatement. That laxative scene is still tear-inducing funny! I absolutely cracked up just from this review of that scene alone.
The joke that kills me for some reason is when Harry is freezing by the lake and he says he can’t feel his fingers anymore and Loyd confesses he has a second pair of gloves on and his hands are all sweaty and then Harry goes and strangle him to which Loyd lets out this weird holler and you think it’s because he’s shocked he’s been strangled but he just says “Harry!…. Your hands are freezing”
To quote the late great Norm Macdonald and something i'm sure Jeff Daniels might be thinking about right now is "The inside of the human body is more of a miracle than you'd first think since everything goes on in there in total darkness."
I still quote this movie, i can recite the entire thing from memory. My favorite scene is when Lloyd loses his wallet to the old lady, goes home defeated and shouting "Our pet's HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!" gets me everytime. Honorable mention goes to the Extra Gloves scene, "...extra gloves? You've had this pair of extra gloves this whole time?" "...yeah! We're in the Rockies!"
But they still get along which is good. Another fun fact; Lauren Holly auditioned for the role of Melissa in Ace Ventura Pet Detective but lost that role to Courteney Cox.
Harland Williams' "dolphin having a stroke" reaction to drinking the beer was actually improvised by him right before shooting. He mentioned it recently on a podcast (maybe his own podcast? I forget). He actually said it *was* a sort of "dolphin" noise that he had done as a random joke earlier on set, and I think one of the Farrellys randomly suggested he do something like that for the scene - they kinda just told him to do whatever, even though this was like his very first movie - I think they happened to notice him doing stand-up shortly before the movie shoot and immediately liked him. He talked about how he basically started getting steady work as soon as he got to Hollywood - people just really loved his stand-up immediately.
I think calling it "dumb" is misunderstanding it. I think most of the humor is very smartly done. A lot of the biggest comedians consider it their favorite movie. I think people similarly misunderstand Tim & Eric as just "dumb" because they don't really "get" the anti-humor. I think most anti-humor doesn't work very well, but Tim & Eric have mastered it.
You didn’t bring it up, but I love the part where he sees the old newspaper headline and yells out “No Way, That’s Great, WE LANDED ON THE MOON!” which was completely improvised. I have no idea how any other actors could keep a straight face after that happened! 🤣
@@alsybrothwould also help accentuate why this one is held at much higher ground. What things were different ( besides actors lol) or same that were in one movie but not the other that succeeded or failed. Only have seen a bit of Harry met Loyd back on cable TV, so I still need to watch the movie fully myself. The 2nd movie I felt they just went to far on the dumb spectrum by the end which is what causes the movie to be bad.
Fun fact(s): Lauren Holly (Mary) actually married Jim Carrey in 1996. Also, Jeff Daniel’s agent begged him not to do the movie because they thought it would “ruin” his career. But several Golden Globes, Emmy, Tony Award nominations later…he seems to be doing alright.
Hater: This movie is so stupid, it's about two complete idiots getting into completely impossibly dumb situations and being increasingly dumb about it. Lover: This movie is so stupid, it's about two complete idiots getting into completely impossibly dumb situations and being increasingly dumb about it.
Fun fact: Jeff Daniels was offered only $50,000 to appear in the film because the executives were trying to get him to turn down the role. Jim Carrey had asked for him personally so they were trying to get away without having him in the film, but to their dismay he accepted immediately and so they were stuck with him in the role. Turns out Carrey was right and Jeff was perfect for the role.
15:50 - 16:00 NC: No, really. This might be the most demented character Carrey has ever played! That’s saying a lot considering that what’s looking to be his last role before retirement is a mad scientist wanting to rule the multiverse with a wicked mustache and constantly fighting a blue rodent.
I think Hanna-Barbera also produced an Animated Series basef on the Film............I AM DEAD SERIOUS!! Update: 3:01, 😂😂😂😂I just mentioned the Cartoon Show just a minute ago.
God I love that cane scene. Harry winding up a full backswing to crack Lloyd in the back of the knees. I love the whole movie, but that's the first thing that pops into my head when I think of it.
I would’ve loved an edit where he goes, “You wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?” And then it plays “A BAT CREDIT CAAAAAAARRRRDD!!!” Or really any Nostalgia Critic scream.
I love this move. And for the reason why I love this movie more than most would say, it's because of Loyd and Harry. Basically it's that as an actor it's easy to act stupid for comedic sake. But the genius of Dumb and Dumber is that the actors are playing characters who actually think they are super smart but are too stupid to comprehend what's going on around them. And that they also play the characters straight. Also the soundtrack is what really solidified this movie. A lot of great and witty jokes are dialogue focused.
Speaking of Harland Williams, he is the primary reason Rocket Man is as funny as it is. I highly recommend looking into his contributions to the film. ESPECIALLY his contributions to the scene when he is chosen to go into space. The dude is a damn genius lol

@@ArizonanSummerit's so good!

Yep we called it Bullshiter 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@p.l.537 we called it a bullshit 😂😂😂
That works even better, because it's the kind of industry joke that everyone in that industry has heard before.
The “dolphin having a stroke” quip got me! 🤣🤣
I love the big gulp guys. Like, Jim just casually asks about their big gulps, gets no response, then he just says see ya! And leaves lol
What makes the toilet scene even funnier in the extended version on DVD is Harry resorting to remove the toilet off the floor and emptying it out of the window.
I've never seen the DVD, but that sounds very familiar. I wonder if it was shown in a TV airing.
@@PetProjects2011 yeah I remember it being in a UK airing as well as the extended DVD version I mentioned
The most underrated joke for me is when Mary is watching Hard Copy and says "Who are these sick people?" and then you instantly hear the doorbell ring and you know it's Lloyd.. that is some genius stuff haha..
This movie is a masterpiece imo
Another Fun Fact: Jeff Daniels once joked that the toilet scene is his Oscar clip.
Never really got the humor there until I worked at a Best Buy about 5 years ago and they sold Samsonite laptop bags....This whole time he was just looking at the briefcase's logo and I still can't stop laughing about it
Jeff Daniels was in this and Gettysburg in the same year. Wow.
A classic. 30 years...makes me feel old. 😂😢
Same!
Just make sure you live up to that Hercules cliffhanger.
IT LOOKS JUST LIKE VEGAS
@SgtTankDempsey WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE VEGAS
@@SgtTankDempseyWHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE VEGAS? 😂😂😂
He will at some point. Doug said he plans to do all the Disney Renaissance films eventually.
But why tease a cliffhanger like that and not follow up with it soon enough? It’s been a while since such a genuine effort from him.
There was another alternative ending were the owner of the 5 star hotel they stayed in offers them a free room and a job saying they can look after his grandson who turns out to be the little blind boy they sold the dead bird to.
Me and a coworker of mine do the Harry and Lloyd high five at my work. The first snowball Harry throws at Mary's face is always hilarious to me.
Another Fun Fact: Not only was Jim Carrey's "Big Gulps, huh?" in Dumb and Dumber improvised, the Big Gulpers weren't even extras. They were hanging out watching the filming and the director Peter Farrelly put them in a scene.
30 years later and this movie is STILL TIMELESS…It’ll never lose its humor and charm
Mr T once said "it takes someone smart to play someone so dumb".
Yeah, I'm one of those people that's not a fan of this movie, but you are right there is at least one scene that always gets a laugh out of me. "You wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?"
Years ago, when my cousin got married, him and his best man wore the orange and blue tuxedos from this movie at the reception.
"It's so painful it feels good, yet it's so good it feels painful!"
...Pop...Tar-
IT'S NOT POPTARTS!
What was always amazing to me is Daniel’s had 2 big hits that year being this and Speed. 2 completely opposite characters and he played them both perfectly
One of the big three hits from Carrey’s 94 films
Films from the 90s are AWESOME
@@chasehedges6775 agreed! I was born in 1991 and we got so much good stuff back then!
So the Farrellys did it again with Brett Farve in Something About Mary?
I called it! When I heard that it was a Jim Carrey movie, the first one I thought was Dumb and Dumber
Me either
12:55 - 12:58 the sound that he got for a defunct “Sequel Month”!
It’s still everyone after Taco Bell
If Lloyd Christmas and Mary Swanson would have gotten married, her name would have been...
Mary Christmas
Kinda surprised that joke was missed.
I think Carey's most demented character, by far, has to be from Cable Guy.
Dumb and dumber is one of the smartest comedies of all time. Its sequels were the dumb and dumber ones!
Technically the first sequel was a prequel and it sucked.
12:55 Ah yes one of your classic Nostalgia Critic dead memes!
This is one of the few movies where the fart joke is actually funny.
It's so beautifully executed!
Guess what, Toy Story is gonna be 30 years old next year!

@@kdusel1991 same
This film is dumb but somehow genius and one of the best buddy comedies
I'm still trying to figure out how to imitate the most annoying sound in the world. I need to know.
A Screeching high vocal siren like sound
To quote the late great Norm Macdonald and something i'm sure Jeff Daniels might be thinking about right now is "The inside of the human body is more of a miracle than you'd first think since everything goes on in there in total darkness."
RIP Norm
@@gryphonofmightRIP. 😭😭
That toilet scene is the single most iconic scene in movie history.
Funny enough Billy is played by the kid who voiced Christopher Robin in the late 90s Pooh movies
I knew he sounded familiar!
I still quote this movie, i can recite the entire thing from memory. My favorite scene is when Lloyd loses his wallet to the old lady, goes home defeated and shouting "Our pet's HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!" gets me everytime. Honorable mention goes to the Extra Gloves scene,
"...extra gloves? You've had this pair of extra gloves this whole time?"
"...yeah! We're in the Rockies!"
Same.. love both those scenes... & seem to also know every line.. 😂
"Head on! - " NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
I like how your latest reviews are less sketch comedy and more actual critiquing. Keep it up!
Another Fun Fact: Following the release of this movie, Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly did get married in real life, but the marriage only lasted a year.
Not even that long. They were only married like 10 months approximately
But they still get along which is good.
Another fun fact; Lauren Holly auditioned for the role of Melissa in Ace Ventura Pet Detective but lost that role to Courteney Cox.
@@Buzzbar94 no, She didn’t audition. She turned down the role I believe
30 years?!? sigh. Yeah, I hate time, too. Ah, well. Getting old isn't as bad as the alternative.
We've got no food. We've got no jobs. Our pets heads are FALLING OFF!!!
It was very obviously not improvised...
Review Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.
That one's awful
@@DanArnets1492That’s why it’s perfect for NC
@@alsybroth agreed. It's terrible, needs to be destroyed by the critic.
I still refer to dollars as "doll hairs" to this day
Fun fact(s): Lauren Holly (Mary) actually married Jim Carrey in 1996. Also, Jeff Daniel’s agent begged him not to do the movie because they thought it would “ruin” his career. But several Golden Globes, Emmy, Tony Award nominations later…he seems to be doing alright.
Review Zoolander 2. It's a terrible sequel that shouldn't have been made. There was no point for one.
So was the sequel to dumb and dumber
@@HardlyWorkin-kh5uh I kinda agree. But the most pointless was that awful prequel that they did.
@@HardlyWorkin-kh5uh Seriously Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd was a better movie than the Dumb and Dumber sequel...ya it's that bad.
@MrFoolD I kind of agree with that I was thinking about that not too long ago. Dumb and dumber too is so bad the prequel is structurally a better film
@HardlyWorkin-kh5uh reviews said that it has its moments. And that is why I never saw it.
I forgot how many elite jokes this movie has. The one at the end probably tops them all.
Hater: This movie is so stupid, it's about two complete idiots getting into completely impossibly dumb situations and being increasingly dumb about it.
Lover: This movie is so stupid, it's about two complete idiots getting into completely impossibly dumb situations and being increasingly dumb about it.
Fun fact:
Jeff Daniels was offered only $50,000 to appear in the film because the executives were trying to get him to turn down the role.

@@gryphonofmight I guess the Film's Legacy must be that special
10:45 Clearly he's referencing Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. He's even wearing an orange suit.

12:59 😂😂😂 I haven't seen Nostalgia Critic laugh that hard in a while
The photo of sly is unfair. The guys next to him are legitimately 6 foot 7 in height
God I love that cane scene. Harry winding up a full backswing to crack Lloyd in the back of the knees. I love the whole movie, but that's the first thing that pops into my head when I think of it.
This movie was my first PG-13 movie I saw without my parents, with my friends.

They always do.
I was just binge watching old nostalgia critic videos lol
I would’ve loved an edit where he goes, “You wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?” And then it plays “A BAT CREDIT CAAAAAAARRRRDD!!!” Or really any Nostalgia Critic scream.
I don't hate time. Growing old is a wonderful thing.
If you don't, it's because you're dead.
I had the biggest crush on Karen Duffy back in the 90s....
Speaking of Harland Williams, he is the primary reason Rocket Man is as funny as it is. I highly recommend looking into his contributions to the film. ESPECIALLY his contributions to the scene when he is chosen to go into space. The dude is a damn genius lol
Timothy Lovejoy - "Short answer, "yes" with an "if." Long answer, "no" with a "but." 😆
The best jokes in this movie, for me, are the ones that are total throw-away lines 😂
