It wasn’t a democratic mandate, it was advisory. Some people didn’t bother voting because they thought it didn’t matter. No one thought it would be considered a binding mandate. There was no plan, because even at the time politicians knew it couldn’t work. Rees-Mogg asked everybody, even the British public, to help him look for opportunities. You cannot find what does not exist.

The thing I still can't understand is - what is so incredibly special about the UK, enabling it to uniquely thrive outside the EU? Every European nation has its own particular - but shared - history and culture, its own strengths and weaknesses, and its own record of success and failure. But apparently there is some secret ingredient to Britishness which sets it apart from (and above) all those other nations, from Sweden to Germany to Spain. I live in a South American country that was meant to be one of those great opportunities for the UK to export to. Since Brexit way less UK goods in the shops (there are hardly any). Why? The distributors were EU based (Spain and France), the supermarkets had EU owners. Now the local British embassy provides no support to UK nationals because it is ‘focused on trade opportunities’. All to see less than a dozen Range Rovers a year.

First of all Peter Mandelson has been signed up to be Britain's new ambassador to the US, not to manacle us to a comprehensive US trade deal. Secondly, such a trade deal would be in conflict with the contents of the Labour manifesto about maintaining standards. If we can stop a tariff war between ourselves and the US, this will be worthwhile. I know that Starmer has talked about his red lines but ultimately he has to grow the economy or face failure at the ballot box, ergo...he will have to try to negotiate a better relationship with the EU and preferably to try to get back into the fold. He has no choice!

Not only economically, but also socially, the UK is increasingly distant from the EU. For example, hundreds of thousands of EU pupils went on school trips to the UK from the European mainland every year. Now, schools no longer choose London, but Berlin or Rome. The reason is the passport requirement for the UK. In the past, only an EU ID card was sufficient. But not all teenagers in the EU have a passport and schools do not want to burden children with extra costs. In my life, I have been on school trips to the UK twice and have made British friends there who I am still in touch with. But in the future, young people from the UK and the EU will meet each other less often.

I never took advantage of the great freedom to easily travel around Europe when I was younger (I've had problems with depression etc. since early teens, otherwise I think I would have done) but I've always thought it's a great idea for all EU people to be able to explore and spend time living and working in foreign countries without a load of red tape and extra expense. Now that freedom has been lost, another negative of Brexit. Everyone's life made a little bit smaller and less free, the benefits to international cooperation and business taking a small hit too because many helpful connections can be made by people getting to know foreigners. All we hear from the Brexit brigade are vague rants about sovereignty (I had no confidence in the Tories delivering anything worthwhile, and there were a lot of good EU policies that were thrown on the bonfire that we can only HOPE, probably in vain, will be replaced with something as good as or better) and moaning about unspecified opportunities (realistically, no opportunity to do anything better than if we'd stayed in, in my view).

The obvious one is to apply to join the EU but, frankly, that doesn't have legs at the moment. The view in Europe is that the UK leaving hurt and humiliated the EU and when you put FArage's antics when he was an MEP and how he treated other MEPs into the mix then it is clear that there is no immediate appetite in the EU to welcome the UK back and some of the comments on here lend weight to that view. I am far from being a supporter of the Labour Party, but their policy of better /closer relations with the EU is the only show in town. It will take time for the EU to trust the UK and to build a positive relationship.

UK did not understand that it could not have the benefits members have. In negotiations for a trade agreement both parts protect their own interests. The EU commission, negotiating all trade agreements on behalf of all memberstates, is just much more proficient in negotiating and not to forget the leverage of 27 countries and some 450 million people. No results of Brexit is the fault of EU. It was entirly UK´s own decision to leave according to article 50. Anything that happened after leaving is a result of how british politicians handled it.

I live in a South American country that was meant to be one of those great opportunities for the UK to export to. Since Brexit way less UK goods in the shops (there are hardly any). Why? The distributors were EU based (Spain and France), the supermarkets had EU owners. Now the local British embassy provides no support to UK nationals because it is ‘focused on trade opportunities’. All to see less than a dozen Range Rovers a year.

First of all Peter Mandelson has been signed up to be Britain's new ambassador to the US, not to manacle us to a comprehensive US trade deal. Secondly, such a trade deal would be in conflict with the contents of the Labour manifesto about maintaining standards. If we can stop a tariff war between ourselves and the US, this will be worthwhile. I know that Starmer has talked about his red lines but ultimately he has to grow the economy or face failure at the ballot box, ergo...he will have to try to negotiate a better relationship with the EU and preferably to try to get back into the fold. For example, hundreds of thousands of EU pupils went on school trips to the UK from the European mainland every year. Now, schools no longer choose London, but Berlin or Rome. The reason is the passport requirement for the UK. In the past, only an EU ID card was sufficient. But not all teenagers in the EU have a passport and schools do not want to burden children with extra costs. In my life, I have been on school trips to the UK twice and have made British friends there who I am still in touch with. But in the future, young people from the UK and the EU will meet each other less often.

I never took advantage of the great freedom to easily travel around Europe when I was younger (I've had problems with depression etc. since early teens, otherwise I think I would have done) but I've always thought it's a great idea for all EU people to be able to explore and spend time living and working in foreign countries without a load of red tape and extra expense. Now that freedom has been lost, another negative of Brexit. Everyone's life made a little bit smaller and less free, the benefits to international cooperation and business taking a small hit too because many helpful connections can be made by people getting to know foreigners. All we hear from the Brexit brigade are vague rants about sovereignty (I had no confidence in the Tories delivering anything worthwhile, and there were a lot of good EU policies that were thrown on the bonfire that we can only HOPE, probably in vain, will be replaced with something as good as or better) and moaning about unspecified opportunities (realistically, no opportunity to do anything better than if we'd stayed in, in my view).

@@trident6547 I agree with your comment about entering the single market and customs union, as you say no chance at all. I do feel that, in the medium term, there is no solution. The obvious one is to apply to join the EU but, frankly, that doesn't have legs at the moment. The view in Europe is that the UK leaving hurt and humiliated the EU and when you put FArage's antics when he was an MEP and how he treated other MEPs into the mix then it is clear that there is no immediate appetite in the EU to welcome the UK back and some of the comments on here lend weight to that view. I am far from being a supporter of the Labour Party, but their policy of better /closer relations with the EU is the only show in town. It will take time for the EU to trust the UK and to build a positive relationship.

Rural areas such as the Cotswolds, the isles of Scilly, West oxfordshire, the Chilterns and South Cambridgeshire, to name a few, all voted not to leave the EU. whether Brexit was a success or a failure what not totally within the control of the UK, much depended on the type of deal that the EU gave the UK. The EU, for its own self preservation reasons, was never going to give the deal that the UK deserved, thus much of the lack of positivity around Brexit lies at the door of the EU.

@@LeonLShaw The deal UK wanted, not deserved, was the deal EU had no interest in giving because it would have seriously compromised the single market. UK did not understand that it could not have the benefits members have. In negotiations for a trade agreement both parts protect their own interests. The EU commission, negotiating all trade agreements on behalf of all memberstates, is just much more proficient in negotiating and not to forget the leverage of 27 countries and some 450 million people.
No results of Brexit is the fault of EU. It was entirly UK´s own decision to leave according to article 50. Anything that happened after leaving is a result of how british politicians handled it.

People mainly voted Brexit due to lies and misinformation. It has failed the UK on every level, from immigration to the economy. Keir needs to grow a pair, inform the people the facts of the failure and start rebuilding. Need to admit problem, before fixing it.
