In regards to exposure for smaller nations, one idea is to expand what some countries already do and send their ‘A teams’ (ie their B teams) to play against them. This gives opportunities for the fringe players for a main team (for england think people like Potts, Vince, stone, Hain Tom Curran etc) and importantly gives teams like Nepal, Oman, PNG, uae exposure to high quality opponents without massively disrupting the international calendar.

Can I just say as a British person (yes I support England)... why don't we bring Scotland along with England cricket? Surely England and Scotland are friends, considering they are in the same united kingdom... So my suggestion is: Whenever England has a home series, why not do a Scotland warmup match beforehand? That way Scotland are constantly playing against England and getting really good. Then at some point you'd imagine England and Scotland would have two really strong teams, so the UK would be able to dominate the world...
Think Scotland beating England in 2018 put paid to any games between the two , ECB don't want that kind of embarrassment. Australia has agreed to play 3 games in September but England a couple hundred miles away absolutely nothing
@@DNW28 LOL That's nothing to do with it at all. Ireland beat us years ago in that famous WC win in India and we still play them in games just about every summer. We've played them 5 times in 50 overs in between 2020 and 2023, when other full nations can't be bothered. We've played 2 test matches against Ireland as well. Just because Aus have finally found time to have a short series in T20 against Scotland speaks volumes about their own commitment to the smaller sides. It's about time they started having games against associates outside world Cups. Ateotd the amount of games has not that much to with individual nations, they earn the right to play full members due to ranking. I remember when Scotland didn't qualify for the 2019 world Cup, they missed out on ranking points that denied Scotland nine matches against the best teams - more than they get otherwise in a four-year cycle. As for a bit of history about how originally the TCCB supported other smaller sides and then the ECB. A Scotland team started playing in one of the county List A competitions (before T20 there were two of them) in 1983. Originally they were sort of equivalent to the English minor counties, with Cricket in Scotland coming under the Great Britain board (the Test and County Cricket Board - TCCB) like Wales comes under the ECB now. Cricket Scotland split from the English board (which later became the England and Wales Cricket Board - ECB) in 1992 and became an associate member of the ICC in 1994, but they kept playing in county List A cricket until 2013. Ireland also played English County List A cricket from 1980 to 2013 and the Netherlands and Denmark teams also took part at various times during that period. After the amount of games England have played against Aus in just the last couple of years, Tests, One dayers, t20's, another bilateral is not what either side needs and also the schedule is massively crowded anyway especially England's summer. It's easier for Aus to fit a team in for a short t20 in their winter, when there's only England playing and WI's to a certain extent. This Scotland team is relatively new, it used to be just a couple of County players and the rest amateurs but they've gradually got more players in County cricket and built a decent side . At one time most of Scotland's players were mainly English and qualified through parents, grandparents or 3 year residency, for example ' In a friendly match against Cyprus in November 2011, five of the sixteen players used by Scotland were born in England'. They've taken similar road map to what Ireland have done the last 20 years or so. Ireland played in county crickets one day competitions to help them develop, but when more associate side started popping up and the ICC sorted a better schedule, they decided against the ECB help and played more against others at their level. The ECB have been big supporters of local associate/ sides over the years, especially since the ICC started taking them more serious and no doubt England will be having to play a few more games against Scotland as their ranking rises, just as Ireland have.
