    How many English speakers here can speak Spanish without embarrassing themselves?

    • @minyrar7107
      @minyrar7107 4 роки тому +75

      SUGARPOP73 No one who tries should feel embarrassed, that’s the main reason why people don’t even try, fear to think that they are doing it wrong. Nadal is the best example of this. He couldn’t care less about what other thought, he just kept going and tried, sometimes it went well, sometimes it didn’t, but he just laughed at himself and moved on.

    • @sugarpop7377
      @sugarpop7377 4 роки тому +17

      minyra r people are making jokes about his pronunciation and construction of sentences. That is totally out of order , people wouldn't do the same if he was from a protected " minority" . That pisses me off to start with and I can't understand why English speakers would think it's so funny especially when in general middle and working classes are rarely bilingual . Gareth Bale o David Beckham have never given an interview in Spanish due to their inability to learn the language.

    • @minyrar7107
      @minyrar7107 4 роки тому +15

      SUGARPOP73 Can you define what do you mean with “minority” group in the context of your statement?
      I don’t think people makes fun of him, it really is part of the admiration and love for Rafa. I might be wrong, but I’ve never seen a comment saying something like “go to school” or “learn English”, or any other comment that diminishes Rafa’s effort, on the contrary, people love Rafa’s accent and the way he pronounces some words like surface (surfrace) or future. A lot of people would love that Rafa’s English had never improved, because that precisely was part of his enchantment, it still is, but in a smaller scale.
      I’m a native Spanish speaking person living in the US. I know what it is when you are in front of people speaking in a language that you don’t feel 100% comfortable with. Nerves are cracking and you just want to run away from the crowd. I think that’s precisely what people admire more from Nadal, that he faced those situations with grace and in the most beautiful and funny way.
      I can’t speak for those who didn’t choose to learn a different language and their reasons. I see your point though, when you say that they would never do an interview in Spanish. That precisely is what speaks volumes of Rafa. He is extremely humble.

By that I mean, learners invariably say "I am afraid to speak because others will laugh at me", so we have to change this perception to "I am not afraid to speak, and I don't care if others laugh at me...the more I speak, the better I will get!!...and in the end the only laughing will happen when I crack a joke...in English!"

      @@doctordecisive Lessons are not going to help you a lot to learn a language, actually. Ask any polyglot. They learn language by acquisition. By surrounding yourself with the language. First with simple sentence and short stories and the more you know, the more difficult you can make it for yourself. I'm dutch and most dutch people don't learn english at school. Yes, they get lessons, but they don't improve it. They became good at english by gaming in english, by watching Friends, Lost, Prison Break, Oprah, Two and a half men with subtitles every day. The thing is: When you deliberately learn some grammar rules, you won't be able to think of them when you're trying to speak. But when you keep hearing phrases.. your brain slowly understands how it has to conjugate certain words.

    His English has come a long way for sure. Sure he doesn't speak it as well as a number of other top guys in the sport, but there isn't a strong presence of English education in Spain as their is in a number of other European countries. Most of the other guys on tour grew up learning the language and it's definitely easier to learn at a younger age.

    I think Rafa had a good passive English knowledge, so he understood almost everything, but his active skills were not the best, in the end of the video he learned speaking English fine. Not everybody is capable to learn easily another language, everybody borns with different abilities, some needs more time.

    • @jayap3557

      the truth is that Rafa does not care to get the polished accent...and use excessive vocabulary or wannabe phrases like the other english speaking tennis folks do...he knows to communicate what he has in his mind as answers to journalists' questions... and he does that very well... we should actually appreciate his respect for mother tongue and the way he abides by it... he has even stuck to his village without going to foreign places for training etc...all others including federer and jokowitch have gone all over the world for training... Rafa deserves respect for all that he does without doing the fashionable things that the other tennis guys and gals have done...

    Very interesting video. Even though Nadal was busy with his career, he was able to get practice speaking English when he was still young enough to be able to pick it up quite well. I love his interviews in English now, because he knows enough to get his points across concisely, and it's always interesting hearing how people who think in another language bring that thinking to English.
