    Alex's enthusiasm could convince you any film was worthy.....the most memorable instance for me was "Trancers"

    If anybody wants to watch "The Mattei Affair" that Alex Cox mentions, Scorsese and his team has restored the film in 4K and you can watch it now on The Criterion Channel.

    Jeez, the intro at the start with Cox waxing the surfboard for Big Wednesday transported me back in time in a split second. I'd completely forgotten I'd watched this until this very moment.

    Nice to see more of Mark interviewing Alex Cox, would love to see a feature length Kermode Uncut special about Moviedrome. I have so many fond memories as a teenager staying up late to not only watch the double bill of films but those eloquent introductions as well. Moviedrome was my film education & is long overdue a return.

    Count me in as another Moviedrome Nostalgist. Loved the Sunday night movie screenings, and somehow Alex's (& Mark Cousins) intros made you want to watch films you had zero prior knowledge of.
    And thanks to youtube we can re-experience a lot of these introductions. No idea why Moviedrome hasn't been revived in some form.

  • @the_tv_museum
    @the_tv_museum 8 років тому +18

    Unhappily, a lot of Alex's intros for Moviedrome have not been kept by the BBC archives. On the plus side, we've got at least a dozen from off-air recordings. We've uploaded at least one or two I think so far.

    Brilliant, thanks for this video. There is a channel called "B Kurious" which has several Moviedrome videos (not mine, BTW), presumably converted from VHS recordings from TV. I would never have remembered this jewel on TV. Thanks to Alex and Mark for this piece of excellent viewing.

    My stand-out Alex Cox Moviedrome introductions were Manhunter and The Terminator.

    • @Cruithneach
      @Cruithneach 8 років тому

      I recall the Manhunter introduction particularly well - he described Brian Cox and Tony Hopkins as "English actors"

    • @20thCenturyPox
      @20thCenturyPox 8 років тому

      I'd obviously managed to block that aberration from my memory. I do remember him enthusing about Brian Cox in the role - having never seen any other portrayals, he remains the only Hannibal Lecter in my universe. Probably Mann's best film (not that I'm a huge fan of his - not much competition)

    Like everyone else Moviedrome was my introduction to some of the more interesting and strange films the world had to offer. I remember it used to be on quite late, usually because the snooker over ran and was probably the reason I didn't do as well as I should have in some of my exams in school.

  • @sicakes10
    @sicakes10 6 років тому +1

    Sadly the real reason it will not come back is...The rights of films now are handled far differently then how they were in the 80s and 90s. It is simply that the BBC has been out bid by SKY and now NETFLIX (perversely brands that mostly everyone here has a subscription to). So now the films dont have the chance to be screened on the BBC and instead have to find other homes in less and less curated ways.

    If I'd seen the movie before and knew I didn't like it, I used to still tune in for Alex's intro to hear what he said, and if he convinced me, sometimes I'd give it another chance.
