    DESCRIPTION: Blueberries may help protect against age-related macular degeneration, and black currants may help halt the progression of glaucoma.
    This is the final installment of my 4-part video series on the latest science on protecting our vision. In [Greens vs. Glaucoma], I listed the best foods to help prevent glaucoma and in [Dietary Prevention of Age-Related Macular Degeneration] I did the same for age-related macular degeneration. Then I addressed the Dietary Treatment of Glaucoma, in which I also mentioned black currants (as well as in Enhanced Athletic Recovery Without Undermining Adaptation).
    By using a standing or treadmill desk, we can avoid some of the other adverse health effects of sitting at a computer all day. See my video Standing Up for Your Health. I'm now up to 17 miles a day!

    My dear and wonderful father-in-law is now blind from this disease at age 90...(an engineer, what worse disease to have? They love to examine things, take them apart, fix and put back together...my own dad was an electronics engineer so I KNOW how they love to LOOK at stuff) I've been eating the blueberries to help stave off what killed my dad, colon cancer. So glad I'll have the added benefit to my eyesight, and thank you, Dr. Greger for ALL you do...happy New Year to you and yours!

    Probably the most amazing info this week was a study on halting glaucoma progression with diet, while patients simply continued to worsen on medications: nutritionfacts.org/video/dietary-treatment-of-glaucoma/

    Happy New Year Dr. Greger. Love your videos and look forward to more in 2014. I have had glaucoma for years now. I'll be eating black currants from now on (if I can find them). Was there mention of how many were eaten daily? Thank you

      The research showing positive results has used 50 grams (about 2 oz) per day. Here's review of the black currant research that shows the amounts: ua-cam.com/video/SeZbgblmsIQ/v-deo.html

    Thanks uncle Karl for giving me the link to this video. I recently had eye surgery and having minor, annoying side effects that I'm dealing with daily. Thanks again for the link, great advice! Definitely picking up berries tomorrow.

    Would you kindly provide the approximate volume of dried currants required to reach 50 mg of anthocyanins? (I believe it was 50 mg of anthocyanins in the study and not 50 mg of whole berries, but I welcome any corrections.) So, how many teaspoons or tablespoons of dried currants would be required. Thank you.

    Where can you get Black Currants from?

    • @littlevoice_11
      @littlevoice_11 4 роки тому +2

      They grow naturally in the UK and other parts of the world. But you can but them online as a powder or can be found in the freezer section of the supermarket all year round and the fresh fruit section of the supermarket seasonally. They are relatively cheap too

    Dr greger
    Hi Dr. Greger, thank you for this video. I My father-in-law is suffering from glaucoma and we are eager to add blackcurrants to his diet. However, whole blackcurrants are hard to find where we live, and so far we have only been able to find blackcurrant juice and blackcurrant jam. If the anthocyanins are what makes blackcurrants effective against glaucoma, I was wondering if mulberries are even more effective, since they have over twice as much anthocyanins. If so, are dried mulberries just as good as fresh mulberries? Thanks in advance for your help!

    • @JoeCannon1

    Hi, thanks for the info, but when you say "berries", should it be understood as either blackberry, blueberry or strawberry?
    Which one exactly, if it's not either black, bleu or straw?

    it's a horrible awful disease, and it runs in families. So share with your families, and eat those berries daily! I know for a fact that modern medicine has not saved my mothers eyesight. If I had heard this when it came out 10 years ago I would've forced her to eat berries constantly, even without the randomized double blind placebo controlled whatever, eating berries would not have hurt her, and it could have helped. She's practically blind now. I can't get over this.
