DESCRIPTION: Blueberries may help protect against age-related macular degeneration, and black currants may help halt the progression of glaucoma.
This is the final installment of my 4-part video series on the latest science on protecting our vision. In [Greens vs. Glaucoma], I listed the best foods to help prevent glaucoma and in [Dietary Prevention of Age-Related Macular Degeneration] I did the same for age-related macular degeneration. Then I addressed the Dietary Treatment of Glaucoma, in which I also mentioned black currants (as well as in Enhanced Athletic Recovery Without Undermining Adaptation).
By using a standing or treadmill desk, we can avoid some of the other adverse health effects of sitting at a computer all day. See my video Standing Up for Your Health. I'm now up to 17 miles a day!

My dear and wonderful father-in-law is now blind from this disease at age 90...(an engineer, what worse disease to have? They love to examine things, take them apart, fix and put back together...my own dad was an electronics engineer so I KNOW how they love to LOOK at stuff) I've been eating the blueberries to help stave off what killed my dad, colon cancer. So glad I'll have the added benefit to my eyesight, and thank you, Dr. Greger for ALL you do...happy New Year to you and yours!
Probably the most amazing info this week was a study on halting glaucoma progression with diet, while patients simply continued to worsen on medications: nutritionfacts.org/video/dietary-treatment-of-glaucoma/
What about High pressure Glaucoma? Can berries help with that version of the disease? i notice the study was on normal glaucoma.
Brendan Parker the question would be could greens help high blood pressure to the answer is yes so presumable yes.

Thank you so much for information!!!Gratitude from Brasil.
Happy New Year Dr. Greger. Love your videos and look forward to more in 2014. I have had glaucoma for years now. I'll be eating black currants from now on (if I can find them). Was there mention of how many were eaten daily? Thank you
The research showing positive results has used 50 grams (about 2 oz) per day. Here's review of the black currant research that shows the amounts: ua-cam.com/video/SeZbgblmsIQ/v-deo.html
Happy New Year Dr. Gregor and to everyone out there! I am glad I am eating berries every day!
Thank u. God Bless u for all Eternity
Thank You 🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
Have there been any updated studies? Thank you for sharing this video.
Thanks uncle Karl for giving me the link to this video. I recently had eye surgery and having minor, annoying side effects that I'm dealing with daily. Thanks again for the link, great advice! Definitely picking up berries tomorrow.
Happy New Year Family & Friends !!
Would you kindly provide the approximate volume of dried currants required to reach 50 mg of anthocyanins? (I believe it was 50 mg of anthocyanins in the study and not 50 mg of whole berries, but I welcome any corrections.) So, how many teaspoons or tablespoons of dried currants would be required. Thank you.
Great information but no mention of what serving size of berries we should be eating per day, only that we should be eating them.
half a cup or more
Ok
Wonderful advice. I will immediately buy blue berries tomorrow. That will be part of my daily diet. I wonder :Will blue grapes have the same effect?
Nice information, but the serving size of the berries is also important.
Where can you get Black Currants from?
They grow naturally in the UK and other parts of the world. But you can but them online as a powder or can be found in the freezer section of the supermarket all year round and the fresh fruit section of the supermarket seasonally. They are relatively cheap too
Dr greger
Hi Dr. Greger, thank you for this video. I My father-in-law is suffering from glaucoma and we are eager to add blackcurrants to his diet. However, whole blackcurrants are hard to find where we live, and so far we have only been able to find blackcurrant juice and blackcurrant jam. If the anthocyanins are what makes blackcurrants effective against glaucoma, I was wondering if mulberries are even more effective, since they have over twice as much anthocyanins. If so, are dried mulberries just as good as fresh mulberries? Thanks in advance for your help!
Its possible they would be although I've not aware of any mulberry glaucoma research. here's an update on the black currant research if it helps: ua-cam.com/video/SeZbgblmsIQ/v-deo.html
Can it be currant juice?
i wich this channel a lot more subscribers for 2014 and beyond ;-D
best wiches to all and be healthy ;-)
Hi, thanks for the info, but when you say "berries", should it be understood as either blackberry, blueberry or strawberry?
Which one exactly, if it's not either black, bleu or straw?
Thanks again.
is it all berries? is only fruits or can one take blackcurrent drinks to help?
Ottimo!

@@jackwilliamatkins1158Thank you
What is ketosis ?
@@vanessal9334See Dr Berg’s videos for keto information. It’s basically changing your diet cutting out carbs and eating healthy fats and proteins, similar to the old Atkins diet. Hope this helps you.
it's a horrible awful disease, and it runs in families. So share with your families, and eat those berries daily! I know for a fact that modern medicine has not saved my mothers eyesight. If I had heard this when it came out 10 years ago I would've forced her to eat berries constantly, even without the randomized double blind placebo controlled whatever, eating berries would not have hurt her, and it could have helped. She's practically blind now. I can't get over this.
Do black current oil pills have the same effect?
In theory but its hard to say as the research doesn't say either way. What they do say is about 50 grams has been used. Here's a breakdown of the studies: ua-cam.com/video/SeZbgblmsIQ/v-deo.html
Viewers....This is another great compilation of these medical reports. Our cells ( especially the delicate nerves and retina inside our eyes) must be protected and can be protected. This info can help prevent blindness...All you gotta do is eat real food... #cataracts and #maculardegeneration can be decreased.. #antioxidant in food works. #DrSibley

I have glaucoma
Niceeeeeeeee
Glaucoma or not, I'm gonna eat my berries everyday!
many here are missing the point. you can eat all the berries you want, but what else are you eating?
are you eating things that are high in chol? high in sugar and fat?
Hi Dr. Greger, I am surprised that you do not tell people to eat a plant-based diet to better fight against glaucoma. What is the reason for this ?
Because it's not true. You need to get rid of all carbs except berries to cure glaucoma (and all other diseases)
@@susanneschauf7417 - Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo...
it couldn't hurt to just eat those berries from the study whether it was double blind randomized and all that. It might have helped my mother if it was published all those years ago. Because all modern science has not stopped the progression of glaucoma and she is practically blind now.
Bleuet
Black currants are not blueberries.
Black currants are known by many names such as blackcurrant, cassis, or their official species name, Ribes nigrum.
