  • Director S. S. Rajamouli reflects on his career in this exclusive interview conducted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
“An S.S. Rajamouli Film”; so proclaims the distinctive credit stamp that typically punctuates the final frame ― with the velocity of a haymaker ― of the South Indian hitmaker’s films. It is a literal brand that, at least for Telugu-language audiences, has long been synonymous with spectacular action and tremendous emotion that embody themes from reincarnation to revenge, largely drawn from Indian mythology. But despite their cultural specificity, the audience for Rajamouli’s movies have only grown in their diversity. First across the whole of India and its myriad of regional industries (from Bollywood to Tollywood), and more recently, beyond the Indian diaspora audiences of international markets.
With his latest opus, the critically acclaimed period action epic RRR, now spearheading an ambitious awards campaign in the United States, TIFF Bell Lightbox invites you to discover the imaginative vision of S.S. Rajamouli. Specifically encompassing the films that defined his ascent from commercial entertainer to Pan-Indian mythmaker, this retrospective is thrilled to present six of his most beloved works in their native Telugu, and with their thrilling intermissions observed as the filmmaker originally intended.

I remember the days when eega released to Hindi audiences, I used to work at Pune.
I use to hear “yaar, kuch bhi banate h ye south wale movies” when they heard about the premise of the film.
Even before that - maybe 10 years before - perception about south movies was even worse! (They just don’t know that there are 4 distinct film industry exists in south with their respective USP)
Irony, some of those movies were remade in Hindi only to end up career turn arounds for few wading stars and massive box office hits.
Having known Rajamouli’s way of film making and kind of reception he gets in Telugu speaking states, I used to think someday India will make note of Rajamouli’s genius.
Now, the same people are owning and celebrating him as torch bearer of Indian cinema.
I’m glad that rise of OTT has made people aware of other film industries, and shedding their praise and love towards actors irrespective of their home grown cinema industry.
Wish SSR best wishes and I hope he keeps entertaining us!!

I hope Rajamouli stays focused on dharmic culture and not shift his vision to please western audiences like these Hindi films did. I know he is smart and he will not deviate from his work. This applies to anyone. We should focus to making arts and cinema rooted to culture, only then we thrive. We should not crave for western appreciation or western awards.

One and only Rajamouli the legend Indian James Cameron. The both have lot of similarities. Both will visualise well before making every scene and they don't compramise on quality and Budgets and take sufficient time to make master pieces like Avatar and RRR etc. Better Rajmouli Now onwards he can plan his movie for world wide release in all languages and English is must to cover more mileage countries. Rajmouli and camaron Both are use the best technology in every movie. But one thing I will suggest both don't release your making videos, that will spoil the entire feel of movie inside the theatre. For example Avatar 2 clips of making shooting videos revealing that every thing done by technical crew than director. Moving only persons instead of avatars. It's my clear suggestion to both. @@bibhuranjandutta470 mate, chill. Ray is great. Rajamouli is great. Nolan is great. More than one person can be great.
And you credit nolan, and not rajamouli which is interesting. Nolan and Rajamouli, Imo are very similar directors. Their differences come in Nolan going for complex stories, and rajamouli does simple. And Rajamouli places lots of stress on emotional connection, wherease Nolan dives deep into his concept. But they both differ from boring hollywood films by making epic action sequences never before seen, and they do it for real. They also plan their action sequences in massive set pieces that feel real, as opposed to the shakey camera that fast and furious use to cover up their tracks.
Nolan and Rajamouli are my favourite filmmakers, and they stand out from traditional films.

Unfortunately RRR is not considered extraordinary as this director does the same thing again and again. Mostly new audience and kids are impressed from his style.
Once the novelty factor wears off, he is reduced down to a mediocre director.

False. There aren't many Indian directors who can match his dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment. Aside from that, you're talking about competing with movies like Bahubali and RRR which have gotten global attraction - something not many directors can even dream of today. Novelty is purely subjective too. The popular opinions Rajamouli's movies have gotten clearly present him as a multi dimensional and elevational artist in the South Indian film Industry.
This hands down makes him one of the best, if not the best, directors in the Indian cinema platform.

But RRR is in your face over the top and doesn't make sense. He defies the law of Physics and creates unrealistic sequences to Wow the audience. Take the high quality gimmicks out and his movie plots will be something Indians have seen in hundreds of movies..

@@sagarthorat9175 Most films, even the best ones, have simple or cliche stories at the core. That doesn't mean they're bad. Moreover, Rajamouli himself admits he's a blockbuster director. He's not trying to make art films or realism based films. He's an imaginative guy full of fantasy ideas. The only reason people are saying he's overrated is due to the sudden popularity (which can happen to anyone anywhere. Even anime (which have just as many cliche and unrealistic scenes and stories) had a boom in the late 80s and 90s all around the world. It's still popular today.

@@sagarthorat9175 Foreigner validation? What are you, some self righteous Indian movie guru? Cut that stuff out of the conversation and focus on the details. You'd be surprised to know where I actually come from and how long I've watched South Indian movies to recognize that Rajamouli's movies are typically most awaited throughout the nation for his known ability to infuse some of the greatest cinematic elements and successfully capture the audience (visually and emotionally) in them.
Sure RRR defies physics blah blah blah.... But let me ask you - Which action-based Indian movie (which has become an international hit) hasn't? I'm not saying the movie was a "perfect" masterpiece, but the way the movie was constructed from start to end with all the tied elevations, emotions, acting angles, plot derivation (under the context of 2 real life freedom fighters) and the depiction of certain life aspects such as friendship, loyalty, love, and perseverance is dismissed by some folks and not appreciated enough.
I think most Indian cinema viewers commonly love to evaluate movies with emotion and hold self-satisfying standards based on their expectations. They tend to ignore the surrounding facets of movie making and fail to analyze that there are many different factors behind movie making besides their narrowed-down observations which dictate the movie's worth to them.
I'm not trying to stir the pot here or anything, but I'm just saying that his movies are special in their own way and it isn't really evident that his future movies will be seen as "boring" just because you think so. It's a stupid statement to make just because you didn't find RRR to be an extraordinary masterpiece... I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

He is another Marvel director. After Bahubali, no one considers him great. And you're telling me what you have heard from foreigners reviews. Lol. You probably have watched those reviews and reaction videos and felt proud.
Nevertheless, his movies are entertaining in the moment. But he is not a great director..
Action movies don't win Oscars. And thankfully RRR has not been nominated for Best Picture at Academy Awards.
