- I finally got the chance to sit record with my dad (Dr. David Tuggy) about Nahuatl!
In this video we will be exploring the answer to the question: What is the longest nahuatl word?
On the way we'll learn a little about the structure, morphology and grammar of this beautiful language.

Agree, his Spanish is near perfect. There's just a very tiny aura of an accent that gets manifested some times, but for the most part he speaks perfectly - most impressive.
Holly, on the other hand, cheats!! As she learned as a kid, she did so without as much of an effort - as that's the moment when our capacity for learning languages is at its maximum and we can avoid getting an accent.
She wasn't really that young when she began learning Spanish...
If I recall it correctly, she was 6 or 7 years old when she began - that's still pretty young in my book. See David Pakman for the inverse example: his family emigrated from Argentina to the USA when he was 6, and now his English is perfect and without any hint of an accent. My own grand father had never listened to a word in Spanish until he started elementary school at 6, and was forced to fast-learn it (he spoke only Zapotec up to that moment). I didn't get to know him, but from what I've been told he spoke perfect Spanish without an accent.

Oh I'm learning Mex' Spanish, I have visited Mexico City and I realized that many many Nahuatl words are used by Mexicans in a daily basis. For example, the names of Metro Stations, Streets, Avenues, Mexico City districts, in gastronomy over all, personal names, buildings, States, Cities, small villages, I just love it. Yeah! Fortunately we keep the language alive yet. And also the maya language at Yucatán peninsula, in that region we have many mayan words for places, food etc. By the way, Yucatán in maya language means "I don't understand you". Warm greetings!!
Even commonly used words like "Tomato" or "Avocado" came from the nahuatl language.

Wow! I want to learn Swedish! That’s very interesting! And yes a lot of words in our Mexican Spanish came from Nahuatl such as the name of our country! 😄 that’s why I also want to learn Nahuatl. And one interesting fact is the Nahuatl and Swedish are the two last languages I want to learn wow 😄
I watched the entire Spanish video (the very first time I watched a video of yours), and when you said "...we've got to film another video, in English", I was like "what? Really? I've got to watch it too", and here I am; and really, you're amazing, but your father... wow, he's A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I completely believed he was Mexican; his accent, his pronunciation, his intonation... everything's absolutely perfect. His Nahuatl seems to be brilliant too. I feel so much admiration for both of you right now I could just keep writing endlessly about how much I liked both of these videos and how much I'm sure I'm going to be enjoying the rest of them in your channel.... but let's leave it here xD

Me encanta oir hablar a gente apasionada por lo que hace... es muy refrescante sin importar que sea. Tu papá debería tener un canal o por lo menos una sección en el tuyo. Ver el video en dos idiomas hablando sobre otro idioma le dió una tridimensionalidad imposible de lograr en uno solo!!! Lo entendí a otro nivel. Gracias por valorar tanto a Mexico y nuestra cultura! You'll need them eventually for mexican spanish, we have quite a few words just taken straight from nahuatl mixed into spanish, just like how modern nahuatl has words taken straight from spanish.

wow, I was born in Mexico and moved to US in the early 90's , lately I've been wanting to learn more about my Aztec roots. This is a great video. No one in our family speaks dialect neither did my grandparents, but It still sparks an interest. So amazing how your dad can speak three languages and sounds like a native.
It's sad that Mexicans promote learning Spanish instead of their own indigenous languages.

Just watched this video in Spanish. Your father is an impressive human being. I don't know, I expected an accent or limited vocabulary. Neither happened. I'm a native Spanish speaker. Born in CDMX, but now live in TX. I'm envious of his vast knowledge of nahuatl. Indeed he is a Dr. in the highest regard. Excellent video.
I do enjoy your videos. This one reminded me of my youngest daughter who, at 35, still calls me "Daddy". This is rare in English but though she was born in Canada, she lived a great part of her childhood in Chile.

Mexico is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse countries in the world.
We have more than 64 ethnic groups which speak more than 68 indigenous languages with more than 380 dialect variants.
Alongside Náhuatl, other important languages are Maya, Purépecha, Zapoteco, Popoluca, Mixteco, Hñahñu (or Otomí), Mazahua, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Wixárika (or Huichol), Tének, etc...

¿Harías un vídeo en el que hables sobre el "Spanglish" y comentes tu punto de vista sobre este posible nuevo idioma?
Yo creo que más que nuevo idioma sería una variante dialectal ¿No? Pero estaría interesante que su papá incluso hablara de ello siendo lingüista O:
Por ahora solo es un pidgin, pero eventualmente la gramática y el léxico se estabilizarán y tendremos una nueva lengua criolla. Así es como nacieron el creole de Haití (mezcla de francés y varias lenguas africanas), el swahili (árabe más varias lenguas bantúes) y hasta el francés, que básicamente es romance gálico (en sí mismo una mezla de latin vulgar con galo) mezclado con un superestrato de alemán tal como lo hablaban los francos. Hay quienes aseguran que el inglés también nació así, la fusión de la forma de bajo alemán que hablaban los anglo-sajones con mucho de galés y un poco de escandinavo.
No te olvides de la influencia que tuvo el francés, mas o menos 1/3 del vocabulario en inglés proviene de ese idioma. Además de ciertos aspectos de la pronunciación.
De hecho la "l" no tiene sonido en ingles cuando viene antes de la "k" debido a la influencia de las lenguas nordicas.

I love his downplaying of his abilities in the beginning, to me that shows that he doesn't think it's impossible for anybody else to do it, it's just a matter of taking time to study. Wow, Nahuatl is an exciting language. I'm nicaraguan, and you'll find wonderfull legends about nahuatl speaker in Nicaragua, but nobody speaks nahuatl by these days there. Hearing about Nahuatl is like to connect to my roots. Thank you Holly. I really enjoyed this video.

I was waiting for you to put up this video! I was curious to hear your dad's voice in English. Since I'm bilingual, and I'm sure you've encountered this too, I find that sometimes my accent and voice tone shifts a bit depending on the language I'm speaking.

The thing I like about both videos is that you both show different personae (it's not a typo, just in case) depending upon the language you speak. This is more evident by the moment your father speak English. I am amazed with that as I have a similar feeling anytime I have to switch languages. I thought it happened to me as a result of having learned other languages when I was already an adult. However, it seems to be something associated with learning another language rather than the age. Congrats for both special videos, Holly! Keep up the good work!

He speaks 3 fluently (English, Spanish and Nahuatl) and he can read Ancient Greek, and he dabbles in a few other languages like German.

I'm from Tlaxcala, I've always thought that 'Tlaxcal' (a bread, kind of prehispanic pancake) was named after the city of the state of 'Tlaxcala' ... and now I know that it has to be with the verb 'xca' and its conjugation! :OR! I'm amazed!

YT just introduced me into your videos, and I've been watching them literally all day (some of them in both languages) and just find myself fascinated about what is your life, and your family, you're wonderful, I mean your husband is the luckiest. (Had to say that) Here with your dad... Looks like someone you could spend hours and hours talking with. Such an interesting and admirable guy.

Esperanto seems like the easy version of Nahuatl in that it can combine roots and afixes to make lots of words, and actually the dictionaries (like Reta Vortaro and Plena Ilustrita Vortaro, which are online) only record the common ones.
For example: The verb "iri" means "to go", the preposition "el" means "out (of)", the preposition "en" means "in", the adverb "for" means "far" or "away", and the sufix "-ej" indicates a place for whatever the rest of the word indicates. The letter "i" at the end of a word means that the word is a verb, and the "o" at the end means that it's a noun. With this information we can form:
- Eliri : to go out; salir.
- Eniri : to go/get in; entrar.
- Foriri : to go away, to depart; irse de un lugar, partir.
- Eliro : exit (the action of getting out); salida (acto de salir).
- Elirejo : exit (the place where you get out); salida (literalmente: "lugar donde se sale").
- Eniro : entrance (the action of entering a place); entrada (acto de entrar).
- Enirejo : entrance (the place where you get into a place); entrada (literalmente: "lugar donde se entra").
A 2nd example: "Amo" means"love", and "rakonto" means "tale" or "story", so, to say "love story" you can say "ama rakonto" or stick the roots together writing either "amrakonto" or "am-rakonto".
A final example: The original word for tortilla ("tlaxkalli") could be literally translated (if I understood correctly) as "rostitaĵo", and the composition of such word is:
- Rost- : Root of the veb "rosti" (to roast).
-it: sufix for passive past participle (indicates that the entire word refers to someone or something that suffers or receives the action expressed by the root, for example: "ami" means "to love", and "amato" means "loved one").
-aĵ : sufix that means "thing".
So, "rostitaĵo" would literally mean "roasted thing" (or "thing that is roasted"). However, if you wanna say "tortilla" and be properly understood, just say "tortiljo" -pronounced (with spanish phonetics) "tortílio" XD

Holly, I can see how proud of your father you are; so I am of mine too, he also spoke Spanish , Nahuatl and English. Unfortunately he passed away years ago, but it would have been interesting for him to know about your father. I am from from south Veracruz (the jarana land) but I write in English to keep my second language up! By the way, I have a few Nahuatl words I learnt by ear listening to my father sometimes, perhaps later I could discuss it with you and your father .
