  • Just showing some of the practical accuracy that can be obtained with the Taurus 605 with .38 Special ammo. Keep in mind folks that I do not practice like I used to, rarely shoot targets outside of ballistic testing videos so my consistency could use some work, but the revolver's accuracy is stellar.
    Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.paypal.me/...

      Thanks for watching. I think there's a legitimate need to use budget firearms sometimes because people want to see it. For me a S&W is no big deal as in some small respects I am a "professional" because making the videos does allow enough ad revenue that I could buy a 686 in 4 months time just off ads if I saved it, as well as some random channel donations. But a larger percentage of people do get into Taurus, Charter, RIA and the like. LOL I have even debated getting a Hi-point in .40 just to run tests, i'm not a .40 fan so I don't want to buy an expensive one, but .40 and the Hi-point by itself might bring in more views. I also want to start testing .44 Special with a Charter Bulldog when finances allow, might make a great series going against .45 ACP.

    Another good video helping disspell negativity towards taurus. I have 6 snubbies, 3 S&W and 3 Taurus. Love them all. They will shoot more accurately than most could ever hope to and at longer ranges than most believe. You have to do your part. Many people don't understand a snubbie is not a beginners gun. They take practice and consistency, especially double action. Most won't put the time in, though I can assure you it's well worth it. Highly recommend the 605. Everyone I know that has one loves it. Keep up the good work, fellow Michigander.

    • @GunSam

      Thank you. I have noticed with Taurus that their barrels and cylinder gap are top notch, so the accuracy is better than most revolvers. S&W seems to have more tolerances in the right places to ensure better reliability when dirty, but this also limits accuracy and velocity. Both are good revolvers and they both have their place. Both are about as good as each other but I suspect a S&W could have a higher round count between cleanings and still function flawlessly.

    Due to Lionquest's bad influence (lol), I bought a stainless steel 605 recently. I really like it and am thinking some color (maybe red) needs to be added to the front sight......... Like the heft of it. Handles magnums/+P 38s a lot better than the feather weights that some of the other companies are producing.

    Thanks Sam! Good to see how that Taurus is running for you. I have always found the 605 to be a very practical accuracy revolver that's way more accurate then me. I like the way you bring the gun up to your eyes that's a great habit. I had to break myself off the habit of bringing my head down to the gun. Do you focus on the front sight or Target when you shoot? I started focusing on the front site more and improved my shooting.

    Decent accuracy. That's about how the one shot that I tried at the range a while back. I was impressed by the glassy smoothness of the trigger especially - absolutely no grit at all. The double-action trigger pull was long (to be expected), but could be staged if desired, which can be a plus. I didn't try it single-action, but I'm guessing it would be just a smooth. Nicely done at 7 yards. 5:34 Could have been a high primer. Some revolvers' tolerances are so tight that a slightly high primer will bind against the recoil shield as the cylinder rotates. Cheers.

There is a reason you rarely see if the rapid fire guys are actually hitting anything, or at what distance they are actually shooting when clanging steel.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 років тому +2

      Steel looks cool, but every shot looks like a 10/10 because it's a cool sound. If they shot paper it might look not so good. Steel is great at like 100 yards though, if you can hit a 1/1 scale silhouette at 100 yards at even a 50% rate you're in the top 10 percentile for sure!

    • @jbp6759
      @jbp6759 3 роки тому +1

      I just paint the steel between groups and drills so I know how I'm doing. The sound is satisfying and makes practice that much more fun. But you're absolutely right, at long range is when it is really great. I usually shoot my 4" GP100 MC from 25-80 yards, sometimes more, and hearing the steel ring helps me know I'm doing my part. It's a great sound when you can't see the hits!

I look at my 605 like "Is the bad guy having a good day after i shoot it out?". 2 in the same hole is beyond my skill. I have pretty much stopped shooting standard load 38 sp. because I realized it doesn't cost any more to load +p or light 357 Mag. Regular 38s don't give me what I am after in shooting. A big bang!

    There are Repeatability and Reproducibility in any system.
    We can see the instrument as a function of its use and how it's intended to be used.
    In a stubby revolver, the intended use is self-protection.
    So, a quick three shots at the attacker, then hold back two to reassess the threat.
    I would test the "weapon system" with the system including human error, this way.
    A draw and quick 1-2-3, pause. Shot 4, pause, then shot 5, and quickly reload.
    In the research, the 2-3 shots per incident are because after the first several shots the assailant disengages.

    Did you have Cliffo Crump as a typing teacher. You used your finger joints to measure group size. Ms Crump taught us that each joint on your index finger is one inch. gun comes out of the holster and as soon as it's level, let one go. bring the gun up to straight arm and let a few more go. then get 2 hands on the gun and get on the sights for a double tap to the head. now, pull out the 2nd snubbie and repeat (maybe left handed). practice at 3, 5, 7 yds. that's how I'm training these days. on just for fun days I slow fire a 6.5" Blackhawk at 10 and 15 yds. any pistol in any caliber is something to use when you don't have a shotgun.

  • @Fudmottin
    @Fudmottin 5 років тому

    I kinda hate saying this. It looks to me that the Taurus 605 uses a superior lockup mechanism to S&W J frames. It's got the detent on the crane, much like Ruger. This means the ejector rod backing out a bit under recoil won't lock up the cylinder. As far as WD-40 goes, it has its uses, but I wouldn't leave it in a firearm. Give Ballistol a try. It doesn't stink like Hoppes No 9 solvent. A few drops of CLP (very light) after wiping off the Ballistol seems to work quite well.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 років тому

      I usually just use the WD as bore and cylinder cleaning, but it appears some dripped into the internals as upon heating up there was some leaking.

    • @Fudmottin
      @Fudmottin 5 років тому

      @@GunSam I used WD-40 on my RIA M206 to remove excess lube. I would also use WD-40 for its intended purpose of displacing water. However, it it is not really a good cleaner or solvent.
      Have you popped off the side plate yet? My Taurus has completely different internals than a S&W. The transfer bar seems fine. But the hammer is another story. The double action sear is there in my model and it's a serious Achilles heal. Even RIA does better. So my Taurus 669 is OK in single action, but forget about double action. That bit is worn out.
      Ironically, the Taurus design would be superior if the hammer assembly was the same as S&W.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 роки тому +1

      I really don't know. occasional should be fine as long as the cartridges are truly in spec for pressure. Now I do know ammo like that gets more swelled cases than other ammo which require more force to eject the empties, so that's probably not good for the gun, but firing them occasionally should be fine.

  • @partriarch
    @partriarch 4 роки тому

    The grip on your 605 doesn't look like the one which came on mine. Mine works okay with .38 Special rounds, but when running .357 Mag loads, it is brutal on the hand because the OEM grip is too small (pinky hanging out in space). Can actually feel the recoil clear up my arm. It is the only .357 Magnum I have which does this so severly. I have two S&W .357's which never bite the hand that holds them. Your 605 looks like it is a Hogue grip, which means the metal backstrap is exposed rather than enclosed. Does it handle Magnum loads better than the OEM grip?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 роки тому

      I replaced it with the Hogue Monogrip, so yes the back strap is exposed. I guess Taurus claims they will not honor warranty work with their revolvers if the grip has been removed AND damage was caused by removal, as it's sort of tricky to get off. The Houge is much better, and while I cannot say if it really provides much cushion, it does give me more to hold onto and feels a lot better than the original grip's texture rubbing my hand like a cheese grater.

  • @oldcop18
    @oldcop18 5 років тому

      When I first started out I did that, but even 10 years after starting on revolvers I am still evolving to whatever works best. Now I cross my thumbs but hold them high and away from the cylinder, sort of like some people's 1911 grip.

      it seems to be a nice revolver so far. It has it's quirks, like the steel sounds different than S&W steel if you tap on the revolver with your finger, almost like a more hollow feeling. Operation is very similar though, the cylinder does not swing out as smoothly and the double action trigger is 90% of the smoothness of a S&W, but the single action is better than a S&W. All that being said, anyone who isn't a revolver snob could appreciate a Taurus 605 and just regular revolver guys won't be able to tell much of a difference from a S&W or Ruger.

    I own the 605 in stainless steel. And I can shoot Coke cans off a fence post at 7 yards. All day long. They are much more accurate than people give them credit for. Of course I have been shooting a snub nose for over 25 years absolutely hate The Recoil of a 357 snub nose. So I switched to a 45 ACP

      I just recently switched to carrying a .327 Federal with light magnums, so much better than a .357 Mag. The energy is closer to a .38+P, but 6 rounds at 1,150 FPS ain't bad even if they are 85 gr bullets.

    I’ve been shooting .38s at about 10 yards and my 605 is shooting insanely high. I would say about 1 1/2 foot over my point of aim. Anyone else having a similar experience and perhaps some remedy?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 років тому

      I would first want to know if you are experienced with revolvers or not and what ammo is used. That's way too high. Now if your grip isn't perfect and you're using really heavy magnum ammo, I could see how this could happen if it is indeed you. I would try 110 gr or even 90 gr .38 Special ammo and see where it hits as lighter almost always prints lower, if that don't work i'd let someone else shoot it and see if they get the same results. If it's the gun than wow, I have never seen a revolver shoot like that except for when shooting weird ammo like 220 gr .38 Special's that were loaded with .35 Remington rifle bullets.

      Gun Sam _Revolver Aficionado_
      Hey Sam. I was using 130 grain Remington fmj. This afternoon I took the revolver out and set up a similar size target out and shot it again. I shot about ten rounds of 110 gr Hornady critical defense and about five rounds of 125 gr .357 Hornady XTP both of these impacted at the point of aim as they should.
      For some reason the gun doesn’t fire the heavier fmj’s. Perhaps the slower velocity is not suitable for the heavier bullet is what may be going on. I will continue to investigate when I have to chance.

      Federal 158 grain round nose soft led bullets are what it is designed and riffled to shot in ir. Some even use 150 grain wad Cutters in them . The + p 125 grain simi jacketed hollow points don’t shoot accurately with this type rifling. The original loads may surprise you. Could hit a pikapr

      Taurus has great barrels. I used to have a .22 Taurus revolver that had problems, but it's accuracy was as good as it gets. If I told you some of the shots I made you probably wouldn't believe me. 200 yards at a 10"x10" steel with .22 CB short ammo, aiming 15 feet high and hitting 5 in a row.

      @@GreyGhost-r4z I had some Taurus revolvers and traded them off 10 years ago and didn't own another one until a month ago. It's one of those revolver brands that is hard to love when it's all you have, but if you have many more reliable handguns it's a fun easy feeling to have a $300 revolver that works well on the range.
