It is true that North Korea was originally more properous than South Korea, but South Korea wasn't just a place full of fishing villages and farms. Seoul has traditionally been the capital of Korea, not Pyongyang. It has been capital of Gogyuro (고구려), which was one of the three kingdoms of Korea about 1300 years ago, but never a capital after Korea was unified in AD 668. Also, Busan, a city in the Southeastern coast of South Korea, became quite prosperous during the period of Japanese occupation due to its geological closeness with Japan. South Korea wasn't a barren land full of nothing.

The same thing happens in Venezuela, where we would really appreciate a war to free ourselves from these communist bastards in the government. Our situation is very similar to NK, as the government is always brainwashing the poorest people into thinking that USA is this awful enemy that should be destroyed and that is the one responsible for the 'economic war' that has killed too many people from starvation and lack of medicines. Never ever trust a communist, they will destroy everything you love.

In many countries in the west there is great freedom to become depressed and work with their psychiatrist, for it is a freedom and a luxury really, just mope around daily, the world isn't working how they desire it too, yet in poor third world country the lower echelons of the population cannot afford to be depressed, they would starve as there exists little or no safety net, they have to depend upon their efforts, through family and necessity they function without end,. thus freedom is a highly subjective subject.
there is religious freedom, and religious intolerance too, like the kind of thing we see in Tibet this last half century, the chinese have taken away their freedom and the buddhist monks and tibetan people have peacefully demonstrated since 1959's they had freedom taken from them

@Vandole well stated. I saw the same in Afghanistan, in Helmand Province. The 8 year old and 9 year old boys were the young ones - 10 and above were already walking, talking, and conversing as men. I was lucky enough to have an 9 month Pashto course prior to going and was able to talk reasonably well with these little mini men, and it was a thing to shatter ones naivete to just hear the questions they asked and how they thought through things. There were no 10 year old "children" there any longer, though perhaps long ago there were. I wonder what life in the northern portion of Korea was like prior to the Communists. I have no reason not to believe their countrymen and women on the opposite side of the border are any different, except for the thorough and inhumane indoctrination by the despotic regime, as witnessed by these two brave and beautiful ('former') North Korean boys!

I’ve met a couple of older Americans who fought in the Korean War. They are reluctant to tell you they fought there. They wouldn’t talk about it at all. I don’t know what they experienced or what they did, but I’ve never heard or read anything proud about our (USA) part in that war. In contrast, World War II on the other hand is a shining source of pride and glory.
I appreciate the young men taking the time and effort to be interviewed. The more opportunities they have to talk about the brainwashing, propaganda, torture, and other sources of trauma, the less of a grip it will have on them. I wish them well.

I hardly know where to start! This is an internet comment and not the place for an essay but I'm amazed that you know nothing about the Korean War. Let's start with the fact that our government insisted for many years that it was a "police action" and refused to call it a war until fairly recently. It was brutally hard and politics were played that the American fighting men paid for with their lives (I'm talking about funding). Read some books. If you know men who are still alive who actually fought in Korea they were not forthcoming out of shame and guilt but because NOBODY wanted to hear about it. WWII was the movie war. Korea was a matter of short on ammunition and literally freezing to death.

I don't know about those "countless atrocities" that you seem to think were committed by American and/or UN forces but it takes very little effort to learn about the atrocities committed by the North Koreans and Chinese. No the middle is. When Africa goes industrialised (which will happen sometime) they will most likely emit the most CO2 in the world. They will most likely go to coal, just like the western world did, and that will emit a lot of CO2.
But currently the wealthiest are producing the most CO2, since there are not a big middle.

    • @lm1383
      @lm1383 5 років тому +1

Its not the individual poor person as such, but yes, poverty means disregard for the environment. However, it is important to understand that it is the production, owned by the wealthiest, which is responsible for the pollution. The only reason we are still burning fossile fuels to such excess, is because it is a more profitable form of energy generation and can be monopolized. Also, the first billionaires of the world made their fortunes in fossile fuel. They won't give up their monopoly on energy supply willingly, and since they own the "democratic" institution of government, the people can't vote for other alternatives. Innovations in limiting the environmental effects of fossile fule burning is expensive and limits profit, and forced regulation is only an option if people have legitimate democratic influence. Single use plastic is equally a product of the same profit driven high-consumerism, again owned and directed by the wealthiest. The poorer the people, the less they can stand up to this. The problem is inequality.
I will say this specifically about North Korea; The country is imposed the strictest sanctions of any nation in the world. When you think about it, it is very impressive that the country hasn't collapsed long ago. Whatever relief USA provides is only a fraction of what has been taken away by sanctions imposed by US. The fact that they put the USA letters and flag on supplies seems kind of perverse to me, considering the context. Let's not pretend that the US government is famous for it's humanitarian conviction. The deep state has wanted war with N Korea since its foundation. For self-preservation a nation like North Korea needs a large military. Such ressource allocations are therefore once again a result of US policy. Let's be honest, North Korea may not technically be socialist any more, but, this is why America has always been against them. To stand up to such pressure and still produce such kind-spirited, conscientious and gentle people as the three in this video, tells us that the truth about this country is much more nuanced than any one persons account, certainly more nuanced than any media account of this country. There are problems in North Korea, yes, but we shouldn't use those problems to avoid looking at our own problems.

All except the big chunks of it controlled directly by the US. Reason why many DPRK defectors go back after being so disillusioned with it.
The defectors shown here are cherry-picked to portray the North in a bad light. The reason you don't see many girls in these kinds of defector interviews btw is because first it's harder for women to make it in a capitalist society and won't be as enthusiastic about it as these few men and second because women have much more equal rights to men in the North and live more fulfilling lives there. If I was a poor uneducated woman and had to choose between the US colony of the South and the liberated social democracy of the North, the choice is really easy...

In asian countries, when they think of a foreigner, westerner (what they call a lot of tourist) they think of a white person with a pointy long nose. I never noticed this because some middle easterns have pointy noses and I live in a mixed and diverse society. But if you go to a predominantly asian country you can tell a difference when they point it out.

"It just hasn't been that long since Kim Jong-Un came into power"
Meanwhile if that was the US, he'd be in the last year of his second term. Strange to contrast people's sense of time under dictatorship vs. democracy.

Ok, not to be rude, but obviously people will think that's not long when there's no end to it. Even I (and I live in a democratic country) don't think it's very long when you consider that he's a dictator.

I could see myself sitting down and having lunch with these guys. They seem to understand they were brainwashed after enduring it for so many years. They really seem like some very nice down to earth people. I would welcome them!

When the leader of North Koreas (forgot how to spell his name) dad died, they had a funeral. Seems normal right?
if you were in North Korea and you were at his funeral you HAD to look like you were really sad, and if you didn't meet the expectation you were sent to jail or worse. Watch the video of his funeral if you do not think their expressions are fake. 😶

I watched a clip of Kim Jong il's funeral on the Korean news back when I lived in S. Korea. Some of the reactions were so over the top but like you said it was to be expected (after all, he's supposed to be a god in their eyes).
I remember watching a documentary on Netflix where a foreign eye surgeon went to N. Korea to fix x amount of patients. When they were all able to see afterwards they all rushed to a picture of their great leader crying and bowing while saying "thank you/this is all thanks to you" etc. The surgeon is just standing at the side of the room watching them like don't mind me it's not like I did anything lmao but he understood.

I remember seeing news clips after his death and of course it was full of people who looked like their dog, wife and kids had all died a few minutes ago, not days ago as was the case. The funniest was a well dressed couple filing into a building (with hundreds of other mourners) with stern looks on their faces. When they noticed there was a camera on them, they immediately started to wail in sorrow, perhaps too late to save themselves from punishment...

American here. I heard about North Korea from a very young age, and it was all negative. My family lived in South Korea when I was a child, and in order to "scare us straight" my stepfather would tell my sister and I that he was going to drive us to the border of North Korea and leave us there, where we'd then either be shot by guards or dragged into the country and immediately be sent to prison labor camps for the rest of our lives. Supposedly (according to my mother) he got that threat from one of our Korean neighbors and it's a fairly common way of Korean parents scaring their kids.
