all these north koreans are so intelligent, soft spoken and insightful. they are so gentle and charming despite the harrowing path life forced on them.
It's the path that made them that way..
anastasia46
yes but they hate us
I just think it's funny that they only make fun of white people, like white people are the only Americans lol.
That's exactly why they're gentle though
I think that is human nature. Socialization can only do so much.
'Real freedom means respecting others' freedom as much as you value your own'
He gets it better than a lot of Americans who are more than happy to walk all over others' freedoms.
cdsilber that’s probably because he for a long time didn’t have freedom - it makes you appreciate it more when you taste it.
When he said that it actually makes me feel good.
Must save his quote for future reference, it's the best explaination i've heard. ever.
@Get to Da Choppa there is also a lot of ammunition that is dropped courtesy of the hardworking American people
The guy with the striped shirt is very smart and has a way with words... his explanation and interpretations make me understand very easily
Zanele Mnguni True.
I like him too.
His interpreter had a way with words maybe lol You can't know his words if don't know korean.
i highly disagree, he said trump is worse than kim jung un
like... how the hell can you think that?
North Koreans: "Americans are always trying to invade!"
Average American: *can't find North Korea on a map*
I learned where it was on the map last year😳😳😳
I've known where it is for years???
That’s a reflection on poor attentiveness in class, which IS a problem in average Americans. I can’t understand how most Americans are so uneducated about these issues.
@@cyleam719 We don't learn about North Korea at school because we don't care about North Korea. The US isn't obligated to teach about other countries.
@@juliaj7939 The US is uneducated Bc it has a piss poor education system. Americans SHOULD be able to locate every country they have had a major military conflict with. That most Americans can’t, is terrible.
"They have nothing left to lose."
"They choose death over oppression."
That's powerful.
Thought the same. If enough NKs "choose death over oppression"... then it's over for the regime.
Yes. It breaks my heart.
It is true that North Korea was originally more properous than South Korea, but South Korea wasn't just a place full of fishing villages and farms. Seoul has traditionally been the capital of Korea, not Pyongyang. It has been capital of Gogyuro (고구려), which was one of the three kingdoms of Korea about 1300 years ago, but never a capital after Korea was unified in AD 668. Also, Busan, a city in the Southeastern coast of South Korea, became quite prosperous during the period of Japanese occupation due to its geological closeness with Japan. South Korea wasn't a barren land full of nothing.
The same thing happens in Venezuela, where we would really appreciate a war to free ourselves from these communist bastards in the government. Our situation is very similar to NK, as the government is always brainwashing the poorest people into thinking that USA is this awful enemy that should be destroyed and that is the one responsible for the 'economic war' that has killed too many people from starvation and lack of medicines. Never ever trust a communist, they will destroy everything you love.
Xpenguin17revived you do realize that their internet is nothing like ours. There is no google there is no bing. Every nation basically has some similarities and a lot of differences in terms of internet. NK can control what is seen, read, looked at. They obviously cannot see outside of their country.
"I realized that real freedom means respecting others' freedom as much as you value your own."
They are all taught lies
Very true words of wisdom.
indeed even we can tend to forget this point at times.
In many countries in the west there is great freedom to become depressed and work with their psychiatrist, for it is a freedom and a luxury really, just mope around daily, the world isn't working how they desire it too, yet in poor third world country the lower echelons of the population cannot afford to be depressed, they would starve as there exists little or no safety net, they have to depend upon their efforts, through family and necessity they function without end,. thus freedom is a highly subjective subject.
there is religious freedom, and religious intolerance too, like the kind of thing we see in Tibet this last half century, the chinese have taken away their freedom and the buddhist monks and tibetan people have peacefully demonstrated since 1959's they had freedom taken from them
they’re called sjw.
As a S.Korean this interview makes me so sad.
We speak same language, we both love freedom!! We are supposed to be together!! I hope the day come soon.
I hope so too. I am from India, and we from other parts of the world want korea to be "One Korea" and not north and south. I hope that day comes. I really do
Ditto.
If america and china get along

“The Americans I met laughed a lot and were friendly towards me.” For some reason that brought a tear to my eye.
Same here. That was really touching
Americans are more accepting of all races and religions than almost anywhere in the world . The country is literally the biggest human diversity experiment in the history of mankind . Despite what the news shows it’s nothing like their portrayal.
@@adamc7191 Until there is no Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Fed and corporate America working together to keep the genocide of Indigenous going, your "more accepting of all races and religions" comment holds too weak added to the killing of unarmed blacks by whites, badge optional or the killing of school kids to protect adults gun rights. Fix that then you might have an America worth saving!
@@adamc7191 - I would not take it that far. US has some black history of non acceptance that is not really fixed 100% yet. Or? Did someone fix it while I was not watching?
Roland Karlsson where was the part I said America was perfect ? Where did I say there aren’t still racists or bigots from all sides ? I’m simply pointing out in a country of some 350 million people , overall it’s people coexist peacefully with the most diverse population. The media will have you thinking what the facts don’t back up . No matter how much you want it to be true . It just doesn’t.
The guy in the striped blue/white shirt is really insightful and self-aware, it was really interesting to hear what he had to say
deiiimonis
Its so crazy how he broke down their leader down to his mannerisms and personality that you could only really know if you lived in and escaped NK
I thought that too he was so reserved and thoughtful at points but had this sort of giddy sense of humor that you tend to see in people who have escaped from extremely traumatic circumstances for whatever reason.

He's the one that escaped NK for about 3 times. He has an interview here on Asian Boss. I won't spoil anything about the content because its great and you need to watch it for yourself.

I was captured by all interviewee's comments/stories but I was especially astounded at how insightful the gentleman in the jean jacket was.
All three of these gentleman are extremely well spoken and intelligent.
@Vandole well stated. I saw the same in Afghanistan, in Helmand Province. The 8 year old and 9 year old boys were the young ones - 10 and above were already walking, talking, and conversing as men. I was lucky enough to have an 9 month Pashto course prior to going and was able to talk reasonably well with these little mini men, and it was a thing to shatter ones naivete to just hear the questions they asked and how they thought through things. There were no 10 year old "children" there any longer, though perhaps long ago there were. I wonder what life in the northern portion of Korea was like prior to the Communists. It would be interesting to know.

“They must value their lives “ “That sounds like someone who’s not starving to death”
This hit me like a bag of bricks
Yeah.. I felt that. People often fail to understand the actions of others in situations, which they themselves have never faced. That is okay. But instead of mocking, doubting or criticizing others (whose situation we haven't experienced and hence don't understand) we should atleast try to understand their situation and the reasons behind their actions.
He speaks so eloquently too where you just felt his words.

Agreed. He asks the questions and then politely listens until the other person has finished answering. Very refreshing, and makes it overall, a lot more interesting to watch.
I totally agree! He did not try to lead them to any conclusions. He wanted THEIR feelings and opinions! And he got their honest feelings and opinions.
Very "natural" interview, best way to do one where you are so involved in your topic/subject that you are having an engaging conversation about it.
emdelicatelyme agreed, he didnt try to put his opinion in or respond with his opinion, he simply interviewed them on their experiences. great interview
"I don't want live like this, I'd rather just fight in war" - so sad that a despotic regime can treat its fellow people like animals to the point of desperation they'd rather die than live in their current existence. Really amazing interview.
It has to feel good being able to talk and joke about Kim Jong Un without fearing for their lives.
@Bob Bob They couldn't do anything. They know if they do this it will be dangerous for them

Thank you for conducting these interviews, and to the people that were interviewed as well. I wish the northern and southern halves of Korea could reunite; my heart truly goes out to the people of North Korea. They're a lovely people plagued by a horrible, totalitarian government, and they deserve so much better.
The trouble with the whole unification thing is that the NK regime wants to "RULE" the people as they do in NK. They don't want to hug the SKs, they want to completely control that country as they do their own. More free labor.

@@深夜-l9f Where did I say that the only time I see suffering is during "unpeaceful" time? I did not say that! I am perfectly aware of the suffering of others and to be frank, myself when there is "peace" all around us! If anyone is being ignorant it is you assuming words and feelings that I did not display or speak. Maybe you need to sit back and do a little more thinking and find a little more self awareness and stop accusing others of saying things that are untrue or have no value! I have sympathy and sorrow for the suffering of others.....what is wrong with that? If you think I am wrong you are way off the mark! Maybe you should work on having a little more sympathy.
The fact that they have pictures of all these hideous so-called war atrocities - regardless of whether they're authentic or not - plastered throughout the corridors of their schools and kindergartens is _not_ healthy.

:O now it makes sense to me thanks. i was like wtf why would they prohibit south Korean movies when they"want" to "help" them.
aa311 well the defectors did say that the govt lies to them and says that they are suppressed by Americans and the West.
I think it's mainly because UK and US movies would be so foreign and fantastic they wouldn't be considered much of a danger, but South Korean culture is so close to North Korea it would be seen as more of a threat.
The guy in the stripes was correct. When he explained the haircut I thought, "Oh!"
yea for real. I was like "AH that's why he sports that stupid cut"
Well, I already knew why he wears that cut, cuz I'm smarter than you 😁 ONE look at photos of the father and grandfather is all it takes, it's a dynastic dictatorship ffs! Btw have I mentioned that I perceived this and you didn't? And did I mention why that is? Like. And subscribe...
+Really Happenings You don't have to talk down at people who don't know all these things.

It's insane how brainwashed they are
Adonis Amarante Not only them. All governments brainwash their people.
Timos Philosophie No they don't lol. Google what brainwashing actually means you idiot.
Kind of reminds me of being back in college, and the things I would hear. Propaganda foisted on young minds without a debate, and any dissenters will be humiliated.
America is patriotic, we arent brainwashed cuz we are free, and that's our propaganda, being free. And if they try to brainwash us the INTERNET brings us back to reality
They aren't insanely brainwashed all the way. I think they did start to become enlightened when they moved out of North Korea
I'm so glad to have found Asian Boss on UA-cam. It is by far one of the best shows/ series I've watched. What an eye opener especially about N. Korean defectors.
"Americans aren't the only ones with big noses right" 😂
That was funny! I'm British and my nose is huge! Haha
trillrudeboy North Koreans know better to stick to their own race actually. Not have degenerate sexual encounters with people outside of their race.
Mare Vare Haha yeah man let me just have a half black baby so it has a higher chance of sickle cell. And people taking drugs and alcohol is all up to them. Your choice to decay your DNA.
Yea like they get a lot bigger. The guy who made the nose comment has the same size nose as the average American @.@. but that's mostly propaganda speaking.
The Bear Minimum it's more of a Jew reference because North Korea is anti-Marxist/Jewish imperialism
I’ve met a couple of older Americans who fought in the Korean War. They are reluctant to tell you they fought there. They wouldn’t talk about it at all. I don’t know what they experienced or what they did, but I’ve never heard or read anything proud about our (USA) part in that war. In contrast, World War II on the other hand is a shining source of pride and glory.
I appreciate the young men taking the time and effort to be interviewed. The more opportunities they have to talk about the brainwashing, propaganda, torture, and other sources of trauma, the less of a grip it will have on them. I wish them well.
Well, most people who fought in the wars do not like to talk about it! Too many horrors!
I hardly know where to start! This is an internet comment and not the place for an essay but I'm amazed that you know nothing about the Korean War. Let's start with the fact that our government insisted for many years that it was a "police action" and refused to call it a war until fairly recently. It was brutally hard and politics were played that the American fighting men paid for with their lives (I'm talking about funding). Read some books. If you know men who are still alive who actually fought in Korea they were not forthcoming out of shame and guilt but because NOBODY wanted to hear about it. WWII was the movie war. Korea was a matter of short on ammunition and literally freezing to death.
from an American standpoint, i learned that our younger troops where sent to korea and had one of the bloodiest battles with inexperienced soldiers so it would make sense if our boys dont want to talk about that one
Countless atrocities and we kinda sorta killed a third of their population.
@@loweffortgaming2593 I'm sure you know that North Korea invaded the South with the support of the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communists. The tens of thousands of Koreans refugees were traveling SOUTH and for good reason. Perhaps we should have left them to the paradise that the Soviets and Chinese had planned for them? I don't know about those "countless atrocities" that you seem to think were committed by American and/or UN forces but it takes very little effort to learn about the atrocities committed by the North Koreans and Chinese. I am constantly amazed by people who find Stalin and Mao models to admire and emulate.
I hope these men don't look in the comment section. Too many trolls
Kim TaeBAE what trolls
Kim TaeBAE Not trolls, just people who aren't absolutely brainwashed like the ones in the video!
I think we're addressing different comments
Wouldn't want them to get the wrong Indra and think all trolls mean what they say.
Not like that could...UA-cam is banned
"real freedom means respecting others' freedoms as much as you value your own"
One insteresting line which I totally agree with is 19:55. Not saying it's a bad thing, since environment is important, but I'll admit the reality that if a person can barely survive, the environment is the least of their concerns.
You know that environmental changes are making poor people even worse off? Like flooding their fields f.x.
Like fair enough that north koreans don't care. But people who _can_ care about the environment (this includes some poor people) are just shooting themselves in the foot if they don't
@Lily Slipcast
No the middle is. When Africa goes industrialised (which will happen sometime) they will most likely emit the most CO2 in the world. They will most likely go to coal, just like the western world did, and that will emit a lot of CO2.
But currently the wealthiest are producing the most CO2, since there are not a big middle.
China and India aren't the wealthiest yet. I think China is third though if you count all of the EU as one.
I don’t think it’s real, in South America there are a lot of indigenous people who fights to protect the environment, there are cultures more attached to nature and venerate it.
Its not the individual poor person as such, but yes, poverty means disregard for the environment. However, it is important to understand that it is the production, owned by the wealthiest, which is responsible for the pollution. The only reason we are still burning fossile fuels to such excess, is because it is a more profitable form of energy generation and can be monopolized. Also, the first billionaires of the world made their fortunes in fossile fuel. They won't give up their monopoly on energy supply willingly, and since they own the "democratic" institution of government, the people can't vote for other alternatives. Innovations in limiting the environmental effects of fossile fule burning is expensive and limits profit, and forced regulation is only an option if people have legitimate democratic influence. Single use plastic is equally a product of the same profit driven high-consumerism, again owned and directed by the wealthiest. The poorer the people, the less they can stand up to this. The problem is inequality.
I will say this specifically about North Korea; The country is imposed the strictest sanctions of any nation in the world. When you think about it, it is very impressive that the country hasn't collapsed long ago. Whatever relief USA provides is only a fraction of what has been taken away by sanctions imposed by US. The fact that they put the USA letters and flag on supplies seems kind of perverse to me, considering the context. Let's not pretend that the US government is famous for it's humanitarian conviction. The deep state has wanted war with N Korea since its foundation. For self-preservation a nation like North Korea needs a large military. Such ressource allocations are therefore once again a result of US policy. Let's be honest, North Korea may not technically be socialist any more, but, this is why America has always been against them. To stand up to such pressure and still produce such kind-spirited, conscientious and gentle people as the three in this video, tells us that the truth about this country is much more nuanced than any one persons account, certainly more nuanced than any media account of this country. There are problems in North Korea, yes, but we shouldn't use those problems to avoid looking at our own problems.
Jesus they are roasting us hard core with the nose thing. OoF ShReddEd
All i could picture was Happy Merchant
@@BroadwayRonMexico lol, same. To be fair if they saw Gabby Hannah (Gabby show) then they could validate this theory. Come to think of it she probably is used in propaganda.
My Greek nose feels offended
All I could think of were the villagers from Minecraft
It's not just North Koreans. I've heard other Asian people say they think white people have long narrow and big noses, just because it looks so different from their own.
excellent interview...vert balanced and thoughtful...Bless those young men for showing the world what goes on in the Hermit Kingdom...
free those people
They are freer than most of the world.
@ sinekonta, they are not. they are most subjected people on earth
You've clearly never been to the DPRK and have your information from the same imperialist people that want to turn it into the US puppet state with no democracy that is South Korea where the poorest people are starving and not being taken care of while there are billionaires there that control all the economy and politics of the country. All except the big chunks of it controlled directly by the US. Reason why many DPRK defectors go back after being so disillusioned with it.
The defectors shown here are cherry-picked to portray the North in a bad light. The reason you don't see many girls in these kinds of defector interviews btw is because first it's harder for women to make it in a capitalist society and won't be as enthusiastic about it as these few men and second because women have much more equal rights to men in the North and live more fulfilling lives there. If I was a poor uneducated woman and had to choose between the US colony of the South and the liberated social democracy of the North, the choice is really easy...
@Sine -- lol that entire comment was so full of bullshit I was laughing the entire time reading it.
sinekonata If you think North Korea is such a “liberated social democracy” then you should move there. Have fun without UA-cam, internet, or food. You won’t be missed.
I feel bad for all North Koreans having brought up like this, America is most definitely NOT a perfect country but better than North Korea
Nicholas Waskan not perfect but the best in the entire world.
fap861 😂 you're as brainwashed as the North Koreans
Danny Semakov name another country where you can marry a man buy an ar15, smoke some weed, pray to jesus or Muhammad or to nothing all in the same day?
fap861 I don't want to live in a country where you can buy an ar15 in a day
However plenty of countries allow you to do the rest of those things...
May the three of you find your happiness and may you keep your freedom . Love from America. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I am only 10 minutes into this video, and I got say, you did an excellent job. This is really good content. It's a thing I've always wondered about. Thumbs up keep up the good work brother
Hideous nose? Aw man... North Korea knows about my insecurities.
This so such a good interview. These are the kind of conversation we have when I lived in South Africa. I’m sure they still do, but not so much here in the US.
I would really like to host any North Korea defector at my house for some BBQ and cold drinks. You can watch all the movies and eat all the hot food your hearts desire lol
Even if he say "destroy the evil America!"? lol
And that's the reason most people want to kill Americans I think the world can agree on three things Putin is just as messed up is Kim Jeong jung-hoon nobody likes Americans and everybody hates Donald Trump
I’m no North Korean but I’d take you up on that
yeeeeees
And get fat and pop ! lol
“real freedoms means respecting others’ freedom as much as you value your own.”
This breaks my heart. They weren't allowed to be kids. They were brought up in fear and hatred. They are terrorized and traumatized their whole lives. I am American and this made me cry. Their government should be punished for doing these terrible things to their citizens. I wish they could all go elsewhere so we could all hug them and show them how wonderful and fun and safe life can be. 🥺😢😭
Right so wrong what they did to their own sad made me cry .
Endoctrination is an atrocity. They endoctrining their own people to hate. To becomes monsters. Childrens don't even have childhood. They can't have magicals cartoons on friendship or even like pokemon or My little pony. I saw they have toys guns has toys. It's so dark.
I was only looking to watch for 5mins and then go sleep, but it was so interesting I watched the whole thing. wow, great topic for discussion and I learned so much :D
I seriously Love this. They should really show this in American schools. Kids are rarely brought up to even break out of our american bubble. It's sad. This is a very important thing middle school kids should see and know about. Good job! Very nicely done.
The entire video shows what a bubble North Koreans live in - they don't even know what the US flag looks like - and you're going on about the American bubble? You're sad.
Good Golly Miss Molly
Of course the situation in North Korea is far worse, there is no reason to argue about that.
But there is such a thing as the "American bubble". I don't want to assume anything about you, but judging from myself and the people I know, information about NK is almost non existent. All I know about it, is propaganda against the country, making the people and their government seem dumb and insignificant.
Now I know its my own fault for not educating myself about NK and its citizens sooner, but thats why it would be a good idea, to show videos such as this one in schools.
did you go through middle school??? 6-7 grade focuses COMPLETELY on world history and goes pretty deep into it
Verena J. you can easily avoid this ‘bubble’ by educating yourself, and no one is forcing you to believe the propaganda. We have freedom of speech and can believe and say whatever we want. Unlike NK
crescendos well yeah it is focused on world culture, but isn't usually that deep
Hearing them talk about the gun violence and racism in 2017 shows how little things have changed. Hoping for more change now, but it puts a lot into perspective.
3 million view is a lot, but this video deserves more than that.
If you compiled a lost of all the videos with comments like yours you wouldn't be able to watch them all
Basically, Kim Jong Un is a bronze V player who says America doesn't deserve to be challenger. And wants a 1v1 to prove the reason he's in bronze is because his team holds him back.
Uhhhhh yeah sure
lmfao
Commissar Gamza rainbow six ?
Overwatch?
Is there a "challenger" in overwatch? No.
These are very brave young men, and very smart. I am grateful to have had the benefit of their insight.
Just want to hug them for what they were put through,… even worse is that we know this is still happening to young kids even today. It needs to stop
what's all of this about noses
Ali Covahey that’s how they portrayed them in cartoons of propaganda. They made them with huge noses. It’s all brain wash. So when they watch an American film and they don’t see the big noses they won’t think they’re American. Therefore they can still see them as what they portrayed them. It’s all brain wash
Asians and in some other places like Latin America they tend to have wide or flat (small noses). In asian countries, when they think of a foreigner, westerner (what they call a lot of tourist) they think of a white person with a pointy long nose. I never noticed this because some middle easterns have pointy noses and I live in a mixed and diverse society. But if you go to a predominantly asian country you can tell a difference when they point it out.
Smodarolla West CLE: I consider myself quite profane, but Jesus Fucking Christ, Hitler...I think perhaps you should take a nap on some railroad tracks...you know...for the benefit of society.
in Asia, we tend to have smaller noses than Europeans or Americans :)
Small/flat noses are very common in Mexico and Central America. In Argentina we have big noses, mexicans make fun of this.
"It just hasn't been that long since Kim Jong-Un came into power"
Meanwhile if that was the US, he'd be in the last year of his second term. Strange to contrast people's sense of time under dictatorship vs. democracy.
Ok, not to be rude, but obviously people will think that's not long when there's no end to it. Even I (and I live in a democratic country) don't think it's very long when you consider that he's a dictator.
Very interesting to hear this perspective. After listening to this, I realize I have NOTHING to complain about.
I could see myself sitting down and having lunch with these guys. They seem to understand they were brainwashed after enduring it for so many years. They really seem like some very nice down to earth people. I would welcome them!
I've never seen a video like this one. I really like it it gives you a really good idea of what north Korea is really like. thank you for this great video. please post more. because I just subscribed. God bless you brother.
Big Albert do you have an idea?how you racist blood suckers in this country are really like?!!
how exactly he would record north koreans if none outsiders are allowed in or no insiders are allowoed out?

These guys are so cute and sweet, I wish them well and they are blessed to have gotten out 🙏🏽
When the leader of North Koreas (forgot how to spell his name) dad died, they had a funeral. Seems normal right?
if you were in North Korea and you were at his funeral you HAD to look like you were really sad, and if you didn't meet the expectation you were sent to jail or worse. Watch the video of his funeral if you do not think their expressions are fake. 😶
I watched a clip of Kim Jong il's funeral on the Korean news back when I lived in S. Korea. Some of the reactions were so over the top but like you said it was to be expected (after all, he's supposed to be a god in their eyes).
I remember watching a documentary on Netflix where a foreign eye surgeon went to N. Korea to fix x amount of patients. When they were all able to see afterwards they all rushed to a picture of their great leader crying and bowing while saying "thank you/this is all thanks to you" etc. The surgeon is just standing at the side of the room watching them like don't mind me it's not like I did anything lmao but he understood.
Angelica S I saw that hahaha
I remember seeing news clips after his death and of course it was full of people who looked like their dog, wife and kids had all died a few minutes ago, not days ago as was the case. The funniest was a well dressed couple filing into a building (with hundreds of other mourners) with stern looks on their faces. When they noticed there was a camera on them, they immediately started to wail in sorrow, perhaps too late to save themselves from punishment...
His name is Kim Jong Un
American here. I heard about North Korea from a very young age, and it was all negative. My family lived in South Korea when I was a child, and in order to "scare us straight" my stepfather would tell my sister and I that he was going to drive us to the border of North Korea and leave us there, where we'd then either be shot by guards or dragged into the country and immediately be sent to prison labor camps for the rest of our lives. Supposedly (according to my mother) he got that threat from one of our Korean neighbors and it's a fairly common way of Korean parents scaring their kids.
