How to Find North Using a Pin

In this video you will learn to magnetize a pin to point north. You could also use anything in your first aid kit that is metal (ei: razor blade, needle, pin from swiss army knife, etc.).
First we need to know how magnets work. The north side of the magnet will point north if suspended by a string... but we must also know that the south side of one magnet with be attracted to the north of an other magnet (as opposites attract).
To magnetize the pin we simply leave it on the magnet for 4-5 days, thus turning the pin into a magnet... but remember if you want the pointy end of the pin to point north, you will need it to be facing the south side of the magnet while it magnetizes itself... you will see why shortly.
After the pin is magnetized, you can place it on something that floats on water and you will notice that the pointy end that was on the south side of the magnet will point north (as opposites attract, this is called reverse polarization.)
An other option to this would be to rub the pin your hair for a couple of minutes to create static electricity, which will temporarily magnetize the pin so you can find north.
Also as mentioned in the video, if you're out in nature and you want to find north with your magnetized pin, you can simply use a puddle of water and a leaf or a strand of hair to suspend your needle to point north.
