Hi Jen, this is Laura, sharing my husband’s UA-cam account. Thanks for another great video. Your question about’90’s sewing touches my heart. In 1997, I had my first wedding. That marriage failed because I’d chosen the wrong man. Put that aside though. Two of my bridesmaids and I made all of the bridesmaids’ dresses. We had so much fun working on them together! And to this day, my proudest make is that maid of honor dress. She was a plus size woman; and with no prior experience, I graded the pattern out to fit her. It came out very well, if I do say so myself 😊
Hi Laura! That's amazing! One of my great aspirations is to learn how to grade up a pattern - you did it and it worked. What an accomplishment, because seriously that is no small feat. I made 3 of the 5 bridesmaids dresses for my wedding too. I bet you were as overloaded as I was!
I sewed for my daughter in the 90's. She was in her senior year of high school and I made a halter type dress with lots of flowing skirt for her senior pictures...I made a red dress...simple button front dress for her "White Christmas". I was also making bridesmaid dresses for a friends wedding...floral with high-low dress length. I was working full time and had very little time to sew but I seemed to stay busy with alterations. i had also gotten into shirt painting and became hooked on it.
Ahhh I’m so glad you put a picture in of the ski suit! Such a cute suit, now I would have worn that too! He looks like he’s in a mission impossible movie or something, way to go Mark! Awesome vlog Jen, love that beehive dolls house 🏡
In the 90s I seemed to be making quite a few formal and bridesmaid dresses for my daughter. Clothes for her and myself for church. Then when 1918 came around had the pleasure of making her wedding dress and her bridesmaids dresses. Lovely memories.🧵🪡🇦🇺
That is one awesome ski outfit and would not look out of place now. After all, being visible on the slopes is what it is all about 😂. Lovely patterns you've picked up and what a great story about the dolls house. 😊. I remember you doing that collab and you all looked fabulous 🌺. I'm not surprised you never want to take that dress off 😍, it has to be your make of 2023, especially after all the stress of coming up with it 😂. Have a great rest of the weekend ❤❤xx❤❤
In the 90s, my favorite make for myself was a red, drooped waist dress, similar to your McCalls pattern. I LOVED that dress! ❤ Most of the time I was making theatre costumes in the 90s. 😊 -Deborah
Jen, like some of those patterns. Glad you like the fabric, hope you do cut it up and make something. I'd love to make myself a dress from the tropical fabric you are wearing. I love watching Adam Sews, he is so cute and the sewing community, such wonderful people. Be blessed.
I was a teenager in the 90s, so it's a decade I'm very fond of. I loved the Britpop style (I am from the UK) and the 1990s skateboarding baggy jeans! There are definitely some things that can be left behind though!
I have to say I would really welcome back styles from the 90's! I think I was still on a Liz Claiborne kick that started late 80's, most of what I sewed was those patterns. Also the Vogue Ralph Lauren dresses and Calvin Klein (American Designer series). There were some Ralph Lauren patterns that were a similar vibe to LA without all the ruffles. The deep armholes were so comfortable, and adding small pads to my narrow shoulder was a really good shape for me. I really miss all the wearing ease, though the advent of stretch in everything helps a little. I have re-purchased several of them to use. The LC coat I made in 1985 is still in my closet. 💗 Weren't stirrup pants 90's too? so versatile! I raised (and sewed for) 2 boys, which was a good fit for me. Most of my ruffles went on nighties haha. I used that nightie and robe pattern you showed recentlly. Good question this week!
I’m pretty certain most of the sewing in the 1990’s was curtains and cushions with a bit of children’s fancy dress. The Laura Ashley fabric is gorgeous! Kind regards from Penny 🇬🇧😊💕
Jen it looks so breezy and inviting on your lanai. Curtains flowing…. Makes me want to go jump on my hammock!! How utterly sweet of someone to send you the Laura Ashley fabric. Thats going to make something beautiful some day!! If its home dec, maybe one of those Laura Ashley weekend bagsI am really loving the hat though. I will be grabbing that pattern soon! You look beautiful as always❤ and cant wait to see what comes of your sewing this coming week. Have a great weekend❤❤ love you much!!!!
Oh, the stories I have to tell you about that danged lanai. It's been hijacked. I thought I'd have to shoot Makaela for wrecking the covered cushions 🙄. Gimme a hammock any day! We should make that hat together now that you're back and going again. Slow going, though, ok? Because I love you too much! 😘
You have a lanai(I'm sure I spelled that wrong😮) like the Golden Girls. Lololol. You have the pattern! Yay! Oh I love S9806! The Laura Ashley fa ric is beautiful! I'm sorry I missed the question.
Love your patterns Jen. I answered the question on my Friday sews video today. My kids were small and I enjoyed sewing for them in the 90’s. I couldn’t find a picture of the dresses I made for me and my daughter to match. I will keep looking. Love your memory picture of the hubs on the ski slope. Your heart is beautiful and I am so thankful to know you. ❤
Grace from Sew Lovely just posted (today, I think) a UA-cam video showing a top she just finished from that dress with the top ruffle you loved from your collaboration! I say you should go for it!! As for the 90's....Well. I remember going shopping for school clothes at Macy's with my daughter when she was 7 or 8, so mid to late 90s. Everything was in navy, brown, black (!) charcoal or insipid lavender. I remember her asking me why everything was in "poop" colors!! And that is my 90's fashion memory! Katy in Mount Shasta, CA Where sewing orange pants is the order of the day!
LOL! I remember when the colors shifted in the 1980's. "Brown is the new black." Blasphemy! Yuck. Gimme all the pastels! I was even dubious about mauve!
I completely agree with you about buying patterns at $1.99 when you can and possibly not making them up vs. passing the sale by and then regretting not getting them when you had the chance. I've bought so many patterns in the past year at the JoAnn's sales, some of them I have more than one copy. I keep a spreadsheet of my patterns and those patterns I'd like to get, both OOP and current ones. Some sale patterns I've picked up for possible gift giving at some point. Didn't do a lot of sewing in the '90s, as I was a divorced, fulltime working mom. Not much time for sewing. I did, however, make my daughter an angel costume for Halloween one year (yes, chiffon is from the devil!!!) and a Mother Teresa habit (?) for a biography report for school, hacked from patterns I had. Other than that, sewing was almost non-existent as was an uninterrupted 8-hours of sleep! I'm sure you can relate. 💤💤 Haven't seen a picture of your sweet grandbaby lately. Please post! ❤
I wish I could bring myself to keep a spreadsheet of my patterns. I rely on my memory, which actually is pretty good when it comes to my patterns. But it's a 64-year old memory so another solution is needed! Chiffon! The Most Horrible of Horribles! I love that you made a Mother Teresa costume! Reminds me of the Flying Nun one my mom made me when I was about 10. And I remember the luxury of 8 hours of continual sleep. I get daily pictures and videos of That Baby! He is growing like a weed. Crawling now and almost to pulling up. I think he'll be walking by the time we see them in November! I'm getting ready. Thanks for asking after him. I just wanna squeeze him.
I am watching your video sewing the eyes on the turtle from the Simplicity pattern you showed in your video. It is a gift for my grandson and a really cute pattern.would love to see yours after you sew it. I'm going to sew the alligator next.
I love that “turtle” pattern! You got a lot done in September with all those PDAG tutorials so definitely nothing to feel bad about. I didn’t sew very much in the 90s. I did make a few things for the house and for my babies, but not for me. I do remember I had a RTW red dress that I absolutely loved. It was very similar to the True Bias Shelby dress. 💞
In the 1990’s, I was still doing heirloom Christening Gowns, custom designed. I was going to school and this was about all I could manage. I probably made a few things for myself. But I may have made my Dynasty looking Butterick winter coat in the early 90’s! I love that coat when it’s really cold because I can wrap up in it. It’s long and I’ve had women ask me where I found a winter coat that long; one lady tried to buy it!
I didn't like 1990's fashion but I do have a favorite thing from that time and that was the birth of my 3rd and final child ( my 2 after that I miscarried).
Hi Jen. love you videos. Two things, would you consider doing more sew alongs? You are so easy to follow by explaining things so simple. Also, where did you get your small labels from? Cant wait for the next one lol
Thank you so much Kristri! I am working on that; they take a lot of time and fiddling around with awkward camera angles because I'm not a pro at that. But I found a trick recently that makes it a lot easier so hopefully I can do more. Anything in particular you'd like to see?
In the 90's I was still working and raising my girls. I wasn't sewing at that time in my life. I told myself, I'm too busy. I would start sewing again "when I retire". Well I'm retired now (2011), BUT!!!, I could kick myself for " waiting" !! I feel I have lost a lot of good years I could have been sewing!! I would have loved to have the memories of sewing little dresses for my girls. So for all you younger women out there who are saying the same thing to yourself, .....My advice would be; please DON'T DO IT! Start now, you will never get that time back! 😢 At least I will have the pleasure of sewing for grandkids.
Jen, have you seen any of the celebs or news reporters on TV lately? Shoulder pads are back and some make me think of Star Trek. they are so pointy and stick out over the shoulder PLEASE NOOO !
1990's most of the fashion was forgotten, but as a working mum with 2 boys did a lot of boys stuff but the most memorable was a 3 piece suit I made for my oldest for his formal when left primary school. He was about 12 at the time and so proud. Still makes my heart beat .💜🪻💜
In the 90's I was making quilts. Love the dress you have on, it's beautiful.
The dollhouse story is precious, and the furniture pattern is a treasure. Mark’s track/ski suit is beyond amazing. Love you bunches. 😘💗

I was a little girl in the 90s. I loved the bright colors and jumper dresses. I actually want to make some vintage style dresses for my kids.

Sept. was no fail. You dressed a long list of girls and taught us how to zhuzh up with a handfull of pocket choices. Time well spent.

It will be hard to cut into it but I do love it. Gotta think of something special. It's perfect for the cooling season!
Jen, didn’t see the link to the dress and fabric you are wearing. Love ❤it.

Wow Laura Ashley fabric! The sewing community is the best!
YES YOU ARE, my sweet friend! Lunch with Michelle soon! Or a sewing day! That'd be fun too!
I was sewing for my children in the 1990's and I made Daisy Kingdom fabric, notions, and notions.

Wonderful!
I sewed little girl clothes for sure. My six kids (2 boys, 4 girls) were born from 1978-89….. the 90s are kind of a busy blur!
Bless your heart! You know about keeping your sanity! I can't imagine throwing boys into the mix -
I didn't sew in the 90s didn't care for the fashion too much.. I loved the 60 and 70's the best so far.

1990s what did I make not much as I just got into sewing the LA fabic beautiful my fabic is retro and maybe fashion great video thanks
Well if there's one thing that's true down under, it's that your "Op Shops" are fantastic as a general rule. I bet you can find some LA gems!
