So great to see more and more "affordable" anamorphic lenses! Not so long ago, these lenses were nothing but a distant dream for indie filmakers. Now with Atlas, Vazen, Laowa, Sirui, you can get superb anamorphic look without selling your kidneys, house and children!
I gotta say, the distortion on these lenses is more severe than I would have thought. I'd love a comparison with the Viltrox 1.33x, which seem to control distortion way better, as well as look sharper. I'm still interested in the Mercury lenses, but this video tempered my expectations...
@@itsoverat6000 For full frame, I'd say the distortion is a bit more than I'd like. But shooting S35 I bet these lenses are fantastic. I would honestly consider these to be S35 anamorphic lenses that as a bonus, can shoot full frame (with some caveats) if you really need to.
I highly suspect that they designed to *cover* full frame, but *optimized* for S35. Best of both IMO. On FF they have tons of character and funk like many lesser known vintage scopes, and on S35, they tone down like many of the great modern scope options.
Thank you!!! Finally some decent footage with this lenses. I pre-ordered the 42 and was hoping to see what the image actually looks like, other videos have had pretty bad quality so this is great to see.
Grabbed the 42 and 72 on pre-order, looking forward to seeing how they look. They're definitely more intense in characteristics than I knew (breathing, flares, and distortion), but I'm still excited to have them out for a spin.
You guys nailed this review! thanks for all the detailed tests and labeling which lens with all your tests shots (Great location too :) In the last decade I can't remember being more excited for a product to release. I truly believe these will be classics for years to come-- they check so many boxes while being packed with personality. I'm curious if you could only keep one lens? and if you went with a set of two-- which would you leave out?
Hey Henry, thanks for the kind words! If I was to choose one, I would choose the 36mm, two lens set I would go with the 36mm and 72mm. Thanks for watching, Jake
@@CVPTV That’s interesting! Opinions seem to differ between the 36 and 42. I guess some, like yourself, love the 36’s character and others I have asked shy away from it. You guys have provided great material for people make there choice on an order! Thanks again Jake! (And congrats! ;)
This is how a review is done! Killer work as always. Awesome Soho location, plus lens charts showcasing these lenses' unique breathing characteristics. Fantastic stuff team.
These look amazing! Definitely out of my price point to purchase, I just got the sirui Saturn. But I’m sure the rental houses in LA will have them soon. Thanks for the review!
You always have the best reviews... I was hesitant about the Ursa 12K (coming from ten years of RED) but I finally jumped ship because of your review and have loved it. With that said, do you happen to have any shots with these on the Ursa? I saw the video that Atlas showed, shot on Ursa, and it was amazing but you can tell they spent a ton on color-grading so I was hoping for a more realistic demo. I keep hearing that they pair really nicely.
Very nice review - as always. A comparison or a review about Laowas Nanomorphs would be nice. They are not full frame, I know. But they're more affordable than the Atlas.
Thanks for the review. I love the look of these lenses and particularly the 42mm. I’m slightly disappointed that the longest lens doesn’t have the exact same dimensions as the others which means that you would have to re-balance for gimbal work on, but it’s not a deal breaker. Agree the bokeh and flares on this set are sublime. Is this set available for demo or hire in London ?
Yes we have a set in from Atlas for in house demos. Drop demo@cvp.com an email if you want to book a demo in, or if you are free next week on the 24/25th you can swing by the BSC Expo (It's free) where we will have them on the lens bar with a lot of other cine lenses! Jake
@@CVPTV Hey, I was looking into BSC expo if there wasn’t a commitment clash going on.. I did want to test it on a converted BMPCC 6K Pro (PL conversion) but don’t think I can get it in time so may do this after .. thanks
it seems like distortion is bit too much, do you think this effects most filmmakers when it comes to choose the right lens. I was considering to purchase and put it in rental house .
Such a solid video again. I've been eyeing these up for a few potential upcoming shoots and it's great to see such an in-depth review of them. I love the 2X anamorphic look, particularly the orions (I mean, who doesn't?) but can sometimes be a bit much for certain projects. This seems like a really nice blend that isn't too overpowering. Looking forward to the Proteus review too!
If you could only hopefully save for one of these lenses which focal length do you choose? Or is it better to have more of a cheaper set or one of these?
I think many of us are contemplating the s35 set of laowa nanomorphs vs a single full frame Mercury lens. Having gotten my hands on a nanomorph, I’m praying build quality with these lenses beasts their cheap aluminum quality.
Yes they would. One thing to consider though is that you will be only using a portion of their image circle which will mean you miss out on the corner imperfections which may be something you want! Jake
please tell me at 0:48 is that no64 bar name actualy purple or from purple fringe... omg if the fringe is such obvious, I probably need to consider cahcel my orders.
@@3130Media Unfortunately not, they are available for pre-order at the moment and none have shipped yet. As I mention in the video, if you are after a set I highly recommend putting a pre-order in as they are going to be popular! Jake
Greatjoy anamorphic 1.8x, for it's price and quality, smokes these Atlas anamorphic lens (my 2 cents). Still, I enjoyed, as always, your video and the rich content of this Atlas review you've done. Keep it up!
They look nice, but are these things like $5k a lens? Not sure I'd classify that as affordable. Gonna assume most people watching this channel don't have cameras that cost that much.
Click bait title : in the age of Sirui and Laowa, more than 15k for 3 lenses is NOT affordable. Realize that almost all of your professional audience is indie, for hire or semi-pro. You're talking numbers that are on another planet, even if it's a fraction of a Cooke or Arri lens.

I agree. The barrel distortion was a bit much for my taste.

nice set of lens, informative 9mins. impressed with the 8K red Raptor also. Thanks CVP.

Killer lenses. Pre orederd 2 of them months ago and I CANNOT WAIT to receive my copies! far superior look than anything else at this price point.

love that there is some distortion on the 36- convincing look.

I concur! Particularly comparing “equivalent” focal lengths between the two sets. 27mm s35 laowa vs 36mm ff Mercury.
Did you verify shimming/back focus on the lenses and camera? Anamorphics even slightly out in this way can see big hits to CA/sharpness.
Heya. Thanks for this video. When are you mercuries tipped for delivery?
Given the front size element do you have a link to the diopters you used ? I would like to order a 1+ while the lens gets here.
Super fun and cool review! Thank you!
Love the grey housing
Would love to see if you could test the focus plane issues with the set.

I’d love to see atlas release a 1.8x anamorphic set. Combining the size of the mercury’s and the image of the orions.
If I used a Canon C70 and an FF adapter would it work with these lenses? Or does something funky happen to the image? Thanks.
Atlas has stated these will not work with focal reducers. Rear filter solutions however… they might.
Looking NICE

Is the squeeze constant or does it change when racking focus?
Constant.
Hmm, lots of distortion. I’m really liking the sirui saturn with neutral flare similar to these. Just wish they had l mount

"Affordable" is a relative term and it really depends on the size of spending capacity from filmmakers, DPs, etc.
I'm still waiting for the Venice 2 review smh

What's going on with the 16:9 footage in this video... Looks a bit wonky 🤔

the distortion is bad.😢 (for me)

$6,000 for a lens might be affordable if you're very rich. anamorphic or not.
