I think the fusion of History + Adventure + social drama + mysticsm could have been handled better in terms of screenplay writing. Dialogues were sharp in many places.
Not in all places...when it's Ranjith the dialogue should be elevated but here most of the dialogues are tough to understand 🙂
Dont dismiss a creative idea when you have shallow understanding.. learn from it.. the dialects are tough, yes but it is what it is back in 1800.. you want them sing “kaathu mele soothu mela” song for you to understand and dance..? Crap heads..

This time, I would totally agree with Baddy. The film really struggles with its screenplay and they just rely on the edit to make up for it. There seems to be a lot of disconnect and feels janky at times with the edit.

I am from Malaysia. Watched Thangalan yesterday. I agree 100% on what Baradwaj review on this movie. It is good experimental and daring venture by Ranjith. Excellent character potrayed by Vikram but something was missing, it might be the "connection" as what Baradwaj pointed out. Atleast must watch two time in cinema to get the grasp of the movie.

How come I feel exact opposite to what you said. Loved each and every frame. This a movie an actor could aspire to act. Loved Pasupati’s character. Language, I loved it because that’s how my grandfather and relatives at the village speak.

Your depiction of pasupathi character is very childish , its a capture of character and his belief system , it was actually connecting in a comical sense, movie was mature and great , there was small lag but overall great watch 👍

First as a Pa. Ranjith fan, I request everyone is be more receptive to valid criticisms. I watched the movie and I agree with the reviewer. The movie have so much to say and doing it in so little time that nothing is leaving behind the impact that it should have. The pace is a real issue. Characters have no depth. The music is too loud. The slang is too vague and tough to understand that it gets irritating after a point.
The movie's indecisiveness (I mean the anti-climax) is the reflection of Ranjith's ideological contradiction with respect to community welfare vs the public good ( that being nature/gold). I don't think even Ranjit is completely convinced with the ending himself, that is the supremacy of public wellbeing over the community wellbeing.

I have a question. Everyone criticizing BR for praising Raayan and criticizing Thangalaan. You people claim BR is from upper caste that is why he did not like Thangalaan. Yet Raayan is not a pro Hindu oriented movie. Dhanusha and his siblings are like the mirror image of Raavanan and his siblings. Many Right wingers called Raayan, an anti hindu movie for portraying Raavanan as the inspiration for lead character. Still BR liked that movie despite being a member of the Upper Caste community. He should have not liked the movie if it was anti hindu and anti brahminical. He is unbiased.

A critic should be trained to explore all aspects of filmmaking. Film criticism differs from a personal opinion. He did not validate his observations with specific reasoning as to why he feels the way he does. If you are monetarily benefiting from a content, ethical handling is a must.
Was sad to see just me +2 in the hall in kochi. Went without any reviews. Film was a let down, music too loud though bgm elevates the film. Vikram was good as always

Yes, it's been your Passion, your Profession and it's really a tiresome job to take pains, watch & observe so many movies to minute details and post your opinions for many of them. Yes, the opinions are bound to differ from person to person and need not necessarily have to sync with the tastes & expectations of others. Yes, some times, the opinions may definitely get influenced by one's personal taste and bias too towards one's favourite actor or director . So, Not everyone needs to concur with your opinion eventhough some of such dissenting views may emerge from hardcore fans of an actor or a director. But, what's really ridiculous and hurting is when people who don't like your views attack you on the community line that's not at all acceptable. It's high time either you turned off the Comments Section Or stopped posting comments immediately upon release of a movie deferring it by a week. This is my honest suggestion. We can't take it any longer as it hurts many people belonging to our community. Unfortunately, in our country and especially in this region, any one can dare to go on spoofing on our community for which there is neither an active resistant protest nor a deterrent law to discourage this bias. And we have been observing this trend for many of your reviews. If they don't like your particular review, the first weapon they take to assault you is the Community Card which is ridiculous. Yes, they can definitely very well dissent and post their counter opinions strictly sticking to a particular aspect or features of a particular film which they feel as not acceptable to them, but, certainly cannot hit you on the caste card. I watched the movie. I agree with BR. I think someone decided to make a 2 part worthy movie into 1 part in a rush. If you genuinely appreciate films, defo go to cinema. If you are normal Tamil audience, wait for OTT and stay away from memes and roast as it will defo spoil your experience when you finally watch the movie.

I do agree with your review, and it's valid. But i did find the film very interesting, As someone from telugu audience, i find such experimental setting of tamil cinema very fascinating and interesting. So i personally connected well with the emotion and setting of movie, i also really liked the dynamic between malavika and vikram. Thought some choices in editing were very interesting as well. But a lot of your thoughts were very valid as well when i think of it. I wish both tamil and telugu make more such movies and try to them perfection

They could have experimented with just history, but Noooo! They mixed history, fantasy, caste, religion, everything and that showed how the movie turned out to be. Very confusing screenplay and story. What could have been a fabulous film, turned out to be testing the patience a lot.

All the cast and crew of each and every film works hard on creating an emotionally connecting story, and sometimes it doesn't happen. It's perspective, the movie didn't work for me either and neither did Raayan. Maharaja was good but not the best. Br's review doesn't align with mine but doesn't mean me you or anyone can judge him for that. He's the same guy who praised Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan all of Pa. Ranjith's or Vetrimaran's previous films. He did so much to promote Koozhangal which most of you have not watched even now. He gave his life to promote Kadaisi Vivasayi. He's now promoting Kottukaali. If you can't accept other people's opinions why do you even watch reviews. Please stop spreading negativity. Y'all will shit-comment here and then support reviewers like Blue sattai maaran who doesn't even have the courtesy to appreciate the newer efforts which Br does every single time.

Thangalaan is all about finding araan araathi bonding that emotion worked well at climax . Director intentionally delivered it . Actual heroine is araathi . He speaks land politics in unexpected way with magical realism . Thangalaan clans wants gold to won land . How landless people willfully ruined themselves in the journey to find the gold . To them gold will return their land ceased by landlords in the name of tax .
Really worked well for me . But climax is delivered in subtle way not that much expressive .

This movie gave me a bad headache and screenplay was disorienting in imp moment where story tries to peak but falls flat
BR is entitled to his views, however it’s shocking that he glossed the genre and production values with one line : “ daring experiment “ . Also the very concern of emotionally not connecting was refreshing to be subtle while staying true to the genre.
Vikram is just awesome. pasupathi lived in this character. Parvathy is a good actor but in this movie her performance is so artificial. As a movie it failed for a lot of reason.

Sad to see Tamil Cinema being at the mercy of Reviewers! These guys show their 100% efficiency towards criticising Tamil movies to minute level of detailing. At the same time appreciating the work from all other languages even if the movies are not so great. I do understand that Criticising is for our own good but horrendous murdering is so dangerous! Similar I will watch a movie, myself, then only decide. It's a risk of losing time and money, yes. But it's the only option we have since 'reviewers' became 'influencers'
I really loved the film and I feel it's probably impossible for most tamil film makers to make this kind of layering in terms of story. I worry why good films are not working for you nowadays BR 🙂
What layers, they were mostly surface level generic cliche ideas.

Becoz of such reviewers they killed a movie ayirathil orvan during its releae now they are teying to sabotage a thangalaan ..its a beautiful craft of adaventure.
He didnt say how is the techncial aspects of the film so called veteran reviewer BR its an wholsole experience .if he dont understand character pasupathy why he says its an minus in a film.

Thangalaan is a good movie, I do not understand what better emotional connect was missing, this review is biased. It is good movie with a good pace. Must watch in theaters
