My mum (mid 70's) and my dad (now deceased) - paid their TV license without fail every year since they were required. I'm in mid 30's and we were never without a TV license growing up until my mum's expired last year. So we're talking DECADES of paying it without question on time. When she wrote a letter to the address to notify them that she didn't want to renew it she got in response a horrible letter covered with RED INK and BLOCK CAPITALS. I am absolutely livid about it. I thought what on earth is going on in this country?!
License cancelled today. Defund the BBC asked me about 5 times if I watched live tv, then had the cheek to ask me what I did watch! My reply was not live tv hence the cancellation 😊
Happy yes, but... You'll now start getting their 'standard' reminder letters - at the rate of one a month... telling you you're not allowed to watch TV without a licence. They start off fairly benign - and slowly get stronger, and more threatening. The latest one I got (yesterday) - tells me '...an investigation has been opened on your address...' ! I'm just waiting for the knock ay my door.... they're in for a right mouthful when they do !

I like the letters it's a badge of honour, legally i don't pay so i'm costing them money and i hope one day to get a visit so i can shut the door in salesman's face.
I agree, sadly though some people are bullied into getting a licence they don’t need. I issued them a pre warning, that in case of any more correspondence I would issue a “cease and desist” notice. I said I don’t recognise the 2 year no licence needed declaration period as it is not mentioned in the 2003 Communications Act. Since that I’ve had nothing. But if the letters do commence again, they will receive the notice, if they breach that, legal action will follow.
@Captain Herring Agreed, I am not looking for conflict with the BBC TV Licence, but the nature of the letters and the misleading way they intimate a legal authority they don’t have winds me up. I always tackle the bully! If I get any more letters I’ll be forwarding them to Chilli, I really like his videos as he always says to be polite and doesn’t go nuclear aggressive on TV Licensing. I love the comment to treat them like the vacuum cleaner salesperson.
I canceled mine back in 2009 There are tons of websites out there that you can use all for free. Save yourself some money and tell the BBC to shove there Licence where the sun don't shine. I have never had a visit.
My big objection with the rules of a TV licence is they state you need it to watch live TV. They class live TV as recorded shows being broadcasted so it's not technically live TV.
At the end, you say that they say... "They can't give a refund because you cant prove that you weren't watching live TV"... So how is it that they can prove that you were watching live TV or not when it comes to fining?
That’s the first thing I thought when I read that - I assume it’s because you can’t prove you weren’t watching live tv but they can prove you are by pulling various stunts if someone lets them in your home
I tried ringing TV robbers when stopped paying spent 3/4 hour hanging on phone gave up every time i get a letter it goes in bin if they cant answer phone i don't answer letters
I'm on my 8th threatening letter after cancelling at end July when that license ran out. Told them on the phone too. Twice some collection agency was apparently going to come to my house. No show. Haven't had this month's yet, daresay it's in the post.
I paid by direct debit, rang up to inform them of my wish to cancel my license and cancel the direct debit. Feared the worse, but I have to say young lady was very helpful, checked my account told me I was due a refund and that she woul send form to claim it. Form arrived, filled it in, with date from telephone conversation, and sure enough refund of 77 quid to my bank has been made. Very satisfied overall with them.

I rang and cancelled mine last week. This week I received a letter with a refund form. All I had to do was fill it in and say that I no longer watch or record live tv or use BBC iPlayer. I had to provide a utility bill and send my license back. I was told that I should receive a refund of £70 as I pay 6 months in advance. It was fairly straightforward. Ill let you know when I get it!
I stopped my direct debits. Got a refund for what they owed me. Later phoned them to say I didn't need a licence and requested I receive no more letters. I'm still receiving letters threatening visits by enforcement officers.
I have been watching your channel for some time now and has given me the confidence to cancel my licence today .... I have been paying a licence for over 40years although i have not watched live tv for years or have little interest in the B BC programming finding my news and entertainment online .. so why did it take me so long to cancel , well truthfully until watching your channel I still thought that a licence was for just having a TV set .... I wonder how many people of my age group (61) are still under this misconception or was it just me Thaks for all your help and keep up the great work
You beat me Kev, I did 21 years without watching a min am so mad at myself every year the voice in my head said Stop but it took Mr Carne to bring the word home...
When I called to cancel they threatened to send a guy round to check if I'm able to receive live broadcasts, they said no matter what if I'm able to watch a live broadcast that makes me prepared to do so and I would need a licence or get a fine. I have even seen vids on UA-cam showing people going into peoples houses, spotting just an Ariel socket on the wall and telling them that's enough to receive a fine. Go watch those. No wonder old folk are scared of bbc.
TBH, when I cancelled by phone the (helpful) person i spoke to advised me I was entitled to a refund and had the form sent to claim it. I duly received £60 or so back. No problems in cancelling and nothing from them since. Not watched live TV for over a year now and don't miss it at all.

ITV and other independent stations should join in with the Defund the BBC campaign. The reason being, if hundreds of thousands of people are genuinely cancelling their TV licence and are no longer watching terrestrial TV then these stations will also miss out on a lot of viewers, which could affect their sponsorships/advertising causing them to lose at lot of money, which in turn may stop them being competitive with Netflix etc and could eventually cause their demise

Dear Jon (?) - you're one of the more reasonable youtubers around - and as such should be aplauded. I go back to the days (almost) of "2LO" - ask your great grandfather - when the BeeB was to be respected for what they did (no competition, no TV only Radio Luxembourg and some despicable types moored off Sarfend in a rowing boat... Now it's so much more complicated - quite beyond 'do you watch TV'. the BeeB does (or did) so much more than just push out programmes for all and sundry, but tried to broadcast quality material without having to worry about too much public opinion. Some dross disappeared, but the good stuff stood the test of time. If YOU persuade folks to dump the fee - the result wiil be / IS that programmes will descend to the quality of what's on the subscription channels. Occasionally folks enjoy reruns of what BBC used to do - without that it descend into the carp that is U.S. Tv and that's a fate worse then death. . . What is needed is mebe a more sensible pricing structure with a balance betweer nil and £157. Coupled with that a better management structure...
I need a TV licence so pay for one. Fairs fair. But I really do enjoy your channel/vids for helping those that don't require one to know in the ins and outs and the tactics the BBC use. Genuinely do hope eventually the BBC is made to abolish the TV license.
I cancelled my license over a year ago and they offered me a refund there and then and i got £70+ (6 months worth) back. But they have written to me twice to reconfirm i dont require a license in the last 6 months or so but so far no visit.
I had just under 3 months to run on my TV licence when i moved to address that allready had a licence so I no longer needed one. They would not refund me anything, felt ripped off even more than thought was with having a licence in the first place.. grrrr
Great idea to increase the licence fee to £800. Even more will cancel. Make it a round thousand and see what happens. If I interpret the rules correctly I can leave the tv on BBC while I go out shopping and the house is unoccupied. No licence required as no one is ‘watching’.
Cancelled mine today. Silly woman said, I need a license to watch basically anything on tv. Even sky etc. I said she was talking out her ass, and ended the call!!!

Pay cash for my tv licence, stopped it 2 yrs ago because I don’t watch the bbc,my licence fee pays for my car tax as this is something I do need, defund the bbc
I stopped having a licence a few years ago. They simply don’t produce enough programming that I would want to watch. As an Englishman, I was shocked that Welsh and Scots got top line Rugby included in the licence fee, but for the English a Sky Sports subscription (BT do a bit now) for the English Premiership was required. It seemed a bit unfair, seeing as most of the licence fee is collected from England, so I complained. The lack of response lead me to cut the aerial and free myself from at last count £1,200 of licence fees. I haven’t looked back. Netflix and Amazon Prime have filled the entertainment gap, and the few times I saw BBC News when in hotels, I was shocked at how distorted the coverage or lack thereof was.
The Welsh rugby coverage is poor. We only get one pro 14 game on S4C. It’s all in Welsh but they do English commentary in game but is dire. The pro 14 is on premier sports and has been for a few years. Think it’s £10 a month and it’s like a pound shop sky sports and then you have to watch the pro 14!
@@johnshellard6201 I think that is fairly recent. At the time I complained, BBC Wales showed top flight Welsh and Pro 14 (whatever it was called back then) rugby on a regular basis, I did watch some of that. As did the BBC Scotland channel for their games. There is no BBC England, which is a statement all of its own. Looking at the schedules for BBC, I can see they showed Wales vs Ireland, but England vs Scotland was on ITV, which gets none of the licence fee. The BBC takes the largest share of its licence fee income from England, and then doesn’t deliver the English sport to those viewers. Whereas Scotland and Wales get bespoke channels and much more of their sport.
My only worry is them seeing a tv through the window and the aerial on the roof cos I know they would twist this...I might give them a screwdriver so they can check the aerial box themselves 😂
Having an aerial on the roof is not proof you watch live television; although, even if you do so, you are the only one who knows, unless you tell people.
@@juliewills3592 tv via an aerial is awful. I had the aerial put up as I thought if I’m paying for a license I may as well watch tv - what a waste of money! I like streaming as you can play what you like when you like, pause etc whereas with an aerial you can only watch things at certain times, adverts, no pausing etc. Certainly not for me. And the aerial has been disconnected now.

You don't have to remove the aerial. In fact, you can still use your TV to receive radio broadcasts, for which no licence is needed.
I've just had my 4th 'advice' letter from the Beeb in barely a year, after cancelling my licence. They must really hate me, but I don't care!
Some mates will be there as long as you buy for them some will be there for friendship ................BBC are takers
They have no morals, they just don't care, all that they want is money monry money, very sad 😔 when will all of this nonsense ever end
License cancelled today. Defund the BBC asked me about 5 times if I watched live tv, then had the cheek to ask me what I did watch! My reply was not live tv hence the cancellation 😊
Cancelled mine, and they've started to send me letters even though their own documentation says they shouldn't send you stuff.
Precisely.
There's no point in filling-out the 'NLN' forms unless you want a refund - and you might not even get that.
Thanks for great video and advice Mr chilli as always
I phoned and cancelled my tv licence yesterday..10mins on the phone..happy days
Happy yes, but... You'll now start getting their 'standard' reminder letters - at the rate of one a month... telling you you're not allowed to watch TV without a licence. They start off fairly benign - and slowly get stronger, and more threatening.
The latest one I got (yesterday) - tells me '...an investigation has been opened on your address...' ! I'm just waiting for the knock ay my door.... they're in for a right mouthful when they do !
@@andrewmonument8847 Would`nt a "I`ll Just Got Get Him" be better leave them stood in the cold even pop your head round the curtain with one finger up mouthing one min lol
@@andrewmonument8847 I won't even open the letters or answer the door if I don't want to...cctv fitted is a plus though..I don't watch live tv so like I said....Happy days
On my visit from TV licence I told the man I couldn’t tell him who I was due to Data Protection. However, if he or TV licence we’re willing to pay for my Data at a charger of £375 I would sell them my name as requested. He laughed and left. Job done 👍
Class!
Very smart 10/10 😊
not all people wearing capes are heroes
Brilliant!
I started sending their letters back with return to sender, royal mail must have hated me
I canceled mine back in 2009 There are tons of websites out there that you can use all for free. Save yourself some money and tell the BBC to shove there Licence where the sun don't shine. I have never had a visit.
Cancelled mine 6 months ago after watching these vids. No probs. Very pleased I did. Don’t miss BBB at all ... thank you!
Thanks Nigel. These loopy leftovers should be stopped in taking over.
You gain an extra £160 in your pocket if you do. Power to the people 🔥
You get given the third degree, and made to feel like you are a criminal..
yes with letters that the postman can see you non paying heathenism, peace brother
The first letter you will receive upon cancelling your TV licence is "would you like a TV licence?"
The Lady was nice but the snake at the door soon wont be !! remember "No Thank You" close the door !!!
That's exactly what I did after taking advice from yourself after getting arrasment for year's.from the BBB. Now I have a license what says that only use online services. Once again Thanks for your great advice. 👍🇬🇧
How did you get that. I’ve been paying for something I don’t even watch and I just use streaming services. It’s like me paying for gas because I have a gas meter when I use an electric oven!
@@LemonPuf All I did is call the BBC and told them that I only have streaming services, l told them I don’t watch any live tv then they sent me a license out saying zero pounds and streaming only since then I have had no hassle with them since.
I hope this helps
@@ernestmeiehofer thanks Ernest. We stream here only too. Watch things when you wish rather than a designated time! Our only issue is we have an aerial but it’s been disconnected from the box outside now.
£70 thats a good crate of beer and a massive curry, better that sitting through hours of BBC shite.
I got £50 , went the pub when they where open , and a takeaway. 🍺🥡
I stopped my direct debits. Got a refund for what they owed me. Later phoned them to say I didn't need a licence and requested I receive no more letters. I'm still receiving letters threatening visits by enforcement officers.
@@DJPaulgee1 I think you mean Crapita.
Cheers for this Jon.
Thank you Nigel you
I have been watching your channel for some time now and has given me the confidence to cancel my licence today .... I have been paying a licence for over 40years although i have not watched live tv for years or have little interest in the B BC programming finding my news and entertainment online .. so why did it take me so long to cancel , well truthfully until watching your channel I still thought that a licence was for just having a TV set .... I wonder how many people of my age group (61) are still under this misconception or was it just me
Thaks for all your help and keep up the great work
You beat me Kev, I did 21 years without watching a min am so mad at myself every year the voice in my head said Stop but it took Mr Carne to bring the word home...
@@yorkshirepud6676 Yes Mr Carne has shown us the light (LOL)
When I called to cancel they threatened to send a guy round to check if I'm able to receive live broadcasts, they said no matter what if I'm able to watch a live broadcast that makes me prepared to do so and I would need a licence or get a fine. I have even seen vids on UA-cam showing people going into peoples houses, spotting just an Ariel socket on the wall and telling them that's enough to receive a fine. Go watch those. No wonder old folk are scared of bbc.
Please don’t stop giving us this information I have learned so much ...thanks ...
TBH, when I cancelled by phone the (helpful) person i spoke to advised me I was entitled to a refund and had the form sent to claim it. I duly received £60 or so back. No problems in cancelling and nothing from them since. Not watched live TV for over a year now and don't miss it at all.
Thank you to your channel I cancelled mine a couple of months ago brilliant yes least I don’t have to find out £13 a month to pay got my Netflix quite happy thank you keep up the good work keep safe take care and all the family 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
After watching many of your videos to feel confident enough to do it I cancelled mine today, took 5 mins on the phone no bother just waiting on the letters now 😅
when ever a salesman knocks at my door my 1st question to them is, "does my taxi firm send a cab round just in case?"
Top man. Keep them comming and more Anita please.
When cancelling they have to prove not you. From the date of cancelation they have to prove you are watching live TV, its not down to you, and under the sale of services and goods act they owe you if you have paid up front.
No it does NOT cut down on their letters and visits. They start chasing almost as soon as the refund is banked..
In this video we take a look at what they send you when you call or fill in the form to cancel your TV licence.

When you fill the form out do you put your actual name?
ITV and other independent stations should join in with the Defund the BBC campaign. The reason being, if hundreds of thousands of people are genuinely cancelling their TV licence and are no longer watching terrestrial TV then these stations will also miss out on a lot of viewers, which could affect their sponsorships/advertising causing them to lose at lot of money, which in turn may stop them being competitive with Netflix etc and could eventually cause their demise
@@PastPresented I believe the BBC also owns channel 4 which is funded by advertising so they get the best of both worlds. They also have BBC studios which they sell the products, that we have funded, around the world and make a fortune out of

Mr chillijoncarne, you are a very handsome man 💋 that's all I want to say 💖
I cancelled mine online, just over 2 years ago (had to redo it at the end of last year). Thankfully I've had no letters/emails (apart from confirmation ones), and no visits (unless they've knocked when no-ones home). It seems I'm one of the lucky few :)
FREEDOM !!!!!!
£160 in ya sky rocket better off .. keep up the good work Jon 👍
Thanks for the info jon keep up the great work
Dear Jon (?) - you're one of the more reasonable youtubers around - and as such should be aplauded.
I cancelled mine last night :)
I need a TV licence so pay for one. Fairs fair. But I really do enjoy your channel/vids for helping those that don't require one to know in the ins and outs and the tactics the BBC use.
Genuinely do hope eventually the BBC is made to abolish the TV license.
You get a refund when you tell them you have not used their services in the last year.
I cancelled my license over a year ago and they offered me a refund there and then and i got £70+ (6 months worth) back. But they have written to me twice to reconfirm i dont require a license in the last 6 months or so but so far no visit.
You are a great presenter. I glad you said if you use service pay for it and if you don’t happy days!
Great video as always cancel my tv Licence even told me needed licence using play station lol joke 👍

Just tell the tv licence goons to go and do something useful with their lives, and bid them goodbye.
Why not ask them to prove their parents were married!
Coz they,re right ones!
Cancelled mine today. Silly woman said, I need a license to watch basically anything on tv. Even sky etc. I said she was talking out her ass, and ended the call!!!
This is where a lot of people slip up. They start talking to the inspectors and digging themselves into a hole. Just say - 'I cancelled my license, I have nothing further to add'.
Very informative as always 👍
It will be a good day whe the bbc are finished. They have treated us all like mushrooms!

Pay cash for my tv licence, stopped it 2 yrs ago because I don’t watch the bbc,my licence fee pays for my car tax as this is something I do need, defund the bbc
i dont pay for netflix because "I DONT WATCH IT" same logic for BBC!!!
@OK i dont watch any of it havent for over a year youtube my tv which costs me £420 per year for internet connection
Just remember: if you still pay the TV Tax, you're funding Gary Lineker.
It's pure harassment
I love your videos that much i am going to cancel my TV licence EVEN THOUGH I NEED ONE LOL 😆
Good for you!
This is such a great video! Thanks for the great info 😊
And the aerial has been disconnected now.
i let mine run out last may and choose to blank them i dont wish to bother with them as i dont want watch the biast crap
What about foreigners, do they "need" a license too?
What do you do once you get your 2 year reminder? Thanks.

what I can not understand is why they need me to say I do not need a licence when I do not have to tell anyone I do not need any other licence.
@chillijoncarne I know you're not a fan of WOIRA (telling the BBC and their affiliates to stay off your property for those who don't know) but I sent them a letter 15 years ago and stated that any further contact in person or by mail would be in breach of the WOIRA and I'd consider it harassment and extortion. I got one more letter, which of cos infuriated me but haven't had a single letter or goon for 15 years now.
