I forgot to show one sample shot taken with this lens of insanely tall bamboo from Kyoto in Japan. I’ve put it up on my instagram account and you can check it out there 🤙📸
Thanks for the run down on the lens. That library of shots - wow amazing! That wide angle capability certainly adds something special to the images. I can see why you have kept it for so long.
I love this lens. Mine has been smashed against monuments, tombs, Pyramids and been dropped in mud. Just clean it up each time and its like new. Aside from the cosmetic damage 😂
I used the 16-35 on my D600 and I loved it. However once I moved up to the D850 it started to show its weaknesses. Especially when it comes to corner sharpness. I replaced it last year with the 14-24 and haven’t looked back a single minute. This lens is awesome in the D850! Filters are an expensive issue tough…..

Many thanks for the long term review of the F2.8G ED lens, great info and examples - seems a great lens to have while out. Many thanks for sharing the info Adrian and have a great weekend.
Great job, Adrian! Your sample photos section was outstanding in this one! I had my 14-24 out just this week on my old D800! You have had yours longer the I have. I bout mine in 2016.
You've gotten some really amazing shots across a lot of different photography genres with this lens over the years! Wow! That montage of images was really impressive - definitely a testament to what a fantastic lens it has been for you! Those night shots at the LOTR set were wonderful! Great stuff as always mate, really enjoyed this one!! Hope you are doing well and having a great weekend!
Thanks Paul for watching. Really appreciate. It certainly has been an amazing lens. It does have its pros and cons but I love it. That LOTR location is surreal, hard to believe we were standing at Bilbo's gate where he left on his adventure. I hear there's some sort of footy game happening over your way tomorrow? Will be watching from my lounge. Enjoy your week mate, cheers 🙏
@@adrianalfordphotography you'll probably watch more of it than I will. I prefer our college football, But I'll have it on his background noise for sure. Enjoy!
I still use this lens today with my D850. I also have the Nikon 14mm f/2.8 ED lens. I will continue to use them both. They are great lenses. Thanks for the review.
Always informative reviews on the various lenses and camera bodies you look at Adrian. Well tested too. Great to have a long term use review out in the world. Gear that stands the test of time is invaluable.
Great review Adrian. Looks like a great piece of gear to have in your arsenal. The quality and images that you showed were outstanding. Thanks for sharing them my friend. Hope you have an awesome weekend. 👏📸🙏🏼
I'm here from 4 months in the future when the 14-24 f/2.8G is now under $1600 brand new. Mirrorless cameras have REEEAALLLY brought down the price of F-mount lenses, and I'm 100% here for it. I finally pulled the trigger on a full-frame camera a few months ago, going with the incredible D850, and I've gotten my 24-70mm f/2.8E and my 70-200mm f/2.8E. Now it's time to round out the holy trinity. I so badly just want to grab the 14-24mm f/2.8G because it is hailed as Nikon's best ultrawide ever, but the filter issue has got me looking hard at the 16-35mm f/4 VR. Thanks for this long-term review. I'm off to watch your head-to-head comparison now. Cheers.
And the end of the day this stays the best option. Great IQ but the reliability is one of the great points also. I had the Sigma 14-24mm exactly for one day because the AF motor failed. High beeping sounds and after a few minutes it completely died. I returned and got a second Nikon 14-24mm instead😊
Hello Adrian, I have always been interested in that lens but my budget did not allow me to get one. It still sells at around $750 pre-owned in places like KEH. At this point I am thinking of investing in the 14-30 Z lens to go along with my Z7 I purchased pre-owned several months ago. Thanks again for the review, always enjoy your content.
Hi Adrian, a great long-term review, buddy! Also when it doesn't feel like that, but these extra 2mm below 16mm are indeed a big difference. The only issue I have with lenses like that is that it gets more difficult with filters, which is why I tend to have my Sony 16-35mm f2.8 and my 12-24mm f2.8 lens side by side in my bag 🙂 Great sample images as well! Enjoy your weekend, Christian
I own this lens too and used it for indoor architecture photos for a friend of mine and with some post processing to correct the angles I got perfect pictures. It's a delicate and heavy piece of glass and therefore I don't use it just like that because you have to be careful. Your pictures really show the full potential of it and frankly I'm a bid jealous. Definitely room for improvement on my side ... Thank you for the review may be you could address in an upcoming video the question how it fares on a Z body with the adaptor as I have just bought the Z8 without any lenses so far.
Thank you for watching. Yes, I will be doing a video in the future re F mount lenses on Z cameras via FTZ or FTZII adaptors. I will share my findings and notes re the differences it makes from being on F mount cameras. Enjoy your weekend
I have had this lens since 2012 when I bought my D800e. I also bought a very expensive filter setup from Fotodiox. After using it for a few outings it became apparent that I am not a wide angle photographer, I much prefer landscapes vignettes, that is, parts of the landscape. Now having seen some of your shots maybe I need to dust it off again. Lately I have been tossing up whether to get a D850 or a Z8 with an adapter.
Thanks Adrian, I’m looking forward to the comparison as I’ve got the 16-35 and have wondered whether it’s worth getting the 14-24. Love the content. Cheers Brad
I have mine since 2013 and just cannot let it go,always been very fond of it ....tbo i can't let the "Trinity" go either lol. Enjoyed the video looking forward your comparison to 16-35 👍
Looking forward to your comparison to the Z-mount version. That exposed front element you discuss is exactly why I am seriously considering trading in my F-mount 14-24mm. I don’t use this lens nearly as much as I’d like to, especially during Canadian winters!
Wonderful photos, Adrian and very nice video. How about using this lens with the new Nikon Z cameras? I have a D750 and I'm thinking of buying the Z6II camera with an adapter to continue using the 14-24 f/2.8G on the new camera. do you think it's a good idea?
Thanks for watching. I acutally used the Z6II with the 14-24mm F2.8 via the FTZ adaptor in this video - ua-cam.com/video/MogXfDQaQjM/v-deo.html - you can see the results for yourself 🙏
Great video. Just recently purchased the Nikon D850 and landed on the 16-35 for my landscapes primarily thanks to your excellent videos. I still need to find a good milky way lens, the 12-24 is currently not in budget. I’m interested in your 12-24 video comparison but also would love your recommendation on budget Milky Way lens. Can’t buy all the expensive lens in the same year 🙂
Hope you don’t mind me asking you this question… I’m currently using Nikon D500 partnered with Nikon 10-24 3.5-4.5 for the ultra-wide shots… The pictures are good as long as the lighting is excellent… Thinking of switching to Nikon 14-24 2.8 for a better all around photos regardless of light… My only concern with 14-24 is its bulbous front element that can’t be protected with any filter (using UV filter for my 10-24)… What say you… My other lenses are Nikon 24-70 & Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR2 Just in case, I'm just a hobbyist and love to take candid shoots & scenes... Thank you in advance for your input...
I believe this was the first lens at f/2.8 and 14mm which makes it somewhat historic. Sadly, I no longer own mine. Happily, It's Z counterpart is every bit as sharp. Thanks for the memories. Cheers!
This lens could easily be named ''vario prime''. It has practically all the traits of primes with the advantages of zoom. Due to it's excellent optical performance one company rehouses them into a cine zoom.
But the real question is, did you purchase a 150mm filter kit for it? I did. WCC=Huge! No regrets but, if I knew what I know now, would of went for the 16-35 just for the filters. Beautiful photos.
I knew straight away what you know now. Just like Nostradamus I could foresee issues with those filters being a pain in a lot of ways. So opted for the 16-35 and bought quality filters for it.
@@adrianalfordphotography my only complaint is the size of the filters . I have the whole set-up in 2 soft cases & just strap them to the outside of my bag unless I know it’s just about the only lens I’ll be taking.
first of all, beautiful shoots. one of my friend wants to sell all his F mount gears. he got one 14-24mm. I'm thinking of buying it. how much does it worth nowadays?
