    I've had this bookmarked for a year and I've finally gone and done it in preparation for track day coming ahead. It's so simple thanks to this vid! I would advise that people attempting this should wiggle the top left part of the trim to ease it out of the airbag panel, and use your thumb/finger as a wedge to run along the two panels to separate. Also, the three T20 screws stay within the wheel, the only one that comes loose is the multifunction module.

      PS. Bring skinny pliers, T20 screwdriver, skinny flathead screwdriver and electrical tape, these are the only things you need

      No worries! Glad it worked out well for you. Yeah I agree, makes much more sense to me this way as well. Why they weren't configured like this from the factory I don't understand. They must have received enough complaints about it though, as the LCI/facelift models were changed to this style. Happy driving! ✌

Was looking into retrofitting LCI paddles at first. I'll probably eventually get a nice custom wheel made and pair them with some cnc machined paddles or something. But for now this works just as I want them to and didn't cost me anything! :)

    Did you have to do any rewiring behind the airbag when you first installed the steering wheel (obviously not the wiring that your explaining in this video)? I'm waiting for a wiring harness to arrive, since I'm reluctant to cut into the OEM wiring, but would rather not have to take out the airbag again. It's a pain to get out and it's much easier to do wiring when the M steering wheel is still out of the car. Thanks

      Hey man, if you google you should be able to find some discussions on e90 forums about this. They say it's a really easy fix though and doesn't take very long. Best of luck! 👍

    hello, question...I have paddles, it's a equipment with VIN... and it dont respond... I check connection to multifunction but I see that it's connected... where is other connections... I can change gear manually but only by gear stick... please help me... I wrote on polish forum's... but they don't know anything

    • @_AfterDarkGarage_
      @_AfterDarkGarage_  2 роки тому +1

      Hey there. I've heard a few people mention this same issue now, where their paddles don't work and they can only change gears manually with the shifter. I'm not sure why this happens, but my first thought would be either a loose connector or damaged wiring. Do the buttons on your multifunction boxes still operate normally? Did you check the connectors for both multifunction modules? The left module is actually daisy chained from the right module, which connects to the steering column beneath the airbag. So if that main connector for the right module is loose/disconnected or damaged then it would likely cause both paddles to fault. But outside of that I can't think what else could be causing the issue, sorry man.
      I only showed modifying the left side in the video since we only did the quick trim removal method with the airbag still attached. This method makes it really difficult to get to the right side module, as that main connector I mentioned earlier restricts movement for that side and doesn't allow pulling the trim out far enough to get to the paddle shifter connector. Also as mentioned in the video the left side modification alone is usually enough for 90% of people. However if you're wanting to check the right side, I recommend removing the airbag so that you can get the trim right off and better check your multifunction boxes for issues.
      Just make sure when removing the airbag to follow safety precautions and disconnect the battery before messing with the airbag at all. I'm sure you already know this, but just to make sure as some here do not. My other video for fixing steering angle sensor issue covers removing the airbag at the start if you need 👍

      @@_AfterDarkGarage_ One more question. Do paddles work as electronic "-" or something similar? I think that when I dismantle the console in the middle I have 4 cables from the lever to the blue cube and then they go somewhere ... If I had a break on the way from the gear lever to this blue cube, could I shift gears through the lever? I'm asking because I'm trying to learn more or less the mechanism of how these blades are serially connected to this fucking lever ... because for sure there was a break somewhere along the way ... but I don't know where ...

    • @_AfterDarkGarage_
      @_AfterDarkGarage_  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, if it is a pre-LCI E9X series (E90, E91, E92, E93) with the steering wheel paddle shifters it will work. You just have to make sure the 335i you're looking at DOES have the steering wheel paddles as it was an option not standard from factory. Also, in case you don't know... if it's an LCI with paddle shifters you won't have to do this, as they changed the paddles to new pull only style paddles as part of the LCI facelift. In my opinion, only go with a Sport package or higher on a 335i. The seats and steering wheel alone are worth it 😉 If you have any other questions feel free to ask! Good luck!

      @@fut_bucker6966 Whoops, I replied on the wrong account haha. My original reply below...
      @Aejp.594 No worries! And thank you for the sub and likes, I appreciate it! Yeah no problem, do you know the differences between LCI and preLCI models? If you do then that will help you immensely as the preLCI cars have the n54, while the LCI are n55. If not, I'll try explain a bit more.
      A car is a 2006 - 2008 model it is going to be preLCI. If it is 2009 - 2012 then it will likely be an LCI model with a few exceptions.
      LCI switch over was in the 2009 model year, so you can get some 2009 that are not FULLY LCI as they are partway through the switch over. They may have the updated headlights, taillights and iDrive but the rest of the car is still preLCI. If you are in the US then there is also the sought after 335iS which was a special edition LCI based car with dual clutch transmission that kept the n54 engine.
      There are some standout differences that can tell you if the car is preLCI N54 or LCI N55. These depend on whether the car is an E90 Sedan, E91 Wagon or E92 Coupe, E93 Convertible. E90 and E91 share the same general body shape and styling while the E92 and E93 share their own shape and styling.
      If the car you're looking at has iDrive, check the screen and controller in the center console. If the controller is just a single knob and button then that will be a preLCI n54 car. If its a knob with 6 or 7 buttons around it then it's a CIC controller which would make the car an LCI n55 in MOST cases. This isn't a sure fire method anymore though as many n54 guys have swapped the newer CIC iDrive into the car as it's a much nicer system, and may or may not have also swapped the controller knob as well. Also if the shifter paddles are black with silver plus and minus on them then it is likely an LCI. However some preLCI owners have also retrofitted the updated paddles.
      On the exterior, the mirrors on the LCI n55 are more square, while the preLCI n54 has rounded teardrop style mirrors. The headlights on the LCI/n55 have white LED angel eyes while the preLCI/n54 have the old yellow bulb angel eyes. The taillights on the LCI are also LED and redesigned shape. The front and rear bumpers are also slightly redesigned for both base/sport and m sport models.
      Obviously the easiest way to tell is going to be by opening the hood and seeing the engine. It's a bit hard to explain the visual differences over text but if you look up both engines on google you'll quickly see the difference. In stock form the n54 is very recognizable. A quick way to tell an n55 is that the inlet from the airbox to the turbo runs over the top of the engine near the back. The n54 doesn't do this and instead runs the inlets around the front of the block. Again this is in stock form. If the car has been modified with aftermarket intakes and relocated inlets etc then it can be different and harder to tell.
      Sorry if this is a bit confusing. I've tried my best to explain 😂😂 I may just do a video on this in the future to help better explain the differences for others that might be wondering as well 👍

    • @_AfterDarkGarage_
      @_AfterDarkGarage_  2 роки тому

      Yes, if you remove pin 1 on the right side connector that should change it to be pull/upshift only. The numbers are pretty small but if you look closely at your connector you should see the pin layout numbers 1-3. Just tape off your exposed pin 1 that you remove and you should be good 😊👍

      Yeah it requires buying an actual paddle shifter steering wheel as they have special cut outs on the back for the paddles. If its something you want though it can be done. You can even retrofit the M3 paddle shift wheel I believe, which I've heard has nicer paddles with a more tactile/positive activation click to them. You can look up Burgertuning.com/Burger Motorsports for more info. They sell retrofit harnesses and have a fair bit of info on the product page that will help explain the differences and required parts :)

      Yeah mine took a fair bit of carefully wiggling the connector back and forth to get out as well. If you think you can do so without breaking the plastic housing on the connector, you can try with a pair of pliers to give a bit more leverage. Perhaps even applying a few layers of electrical tape to the plier teeth or holding a cloth between them so it's a bit softer on the plastic. It is wedged in there pretty good though. I couldn't believe how hard it was to pull it out at first either 😂

    Was about to pay about 5k more got a w012 model because of the paddle shifters. Do you think this can work on a BMW X6? Same paddles as the ones you show here.

    • @_AfterDarkGarage_
      @_AfterDarkGarage_  4 роки тому +2

      I can't say for sure man as I've only done this on E9X models, never on an X6. I know the E71 X6 sports wheel is very similar to the E9X wheel and the paddles are the same paddles. So I would assume that the wiring and connectors would be exactly the same and therefore SHOULD be able to be modified the same as I show in the video. But again I'm not 100%, they could work slightly differently in the X6.
      Even if this doesn't work, you can probably retrofit the newer wheel with LCI paddles. Would work out a lot cheaper than $5k I would think as well :)

      @_AfterDarkGarage_  4 роки тому

      Hey dude. Not really sure aye. Never come across one myself where only the paddles didn't work. Do you know if it came from the factory with the paddles? Or could the paddle shifter steering wheel have been fitted afterwards? I know a lot of people swap sports, msport and m3 wheels into these cars if they didn't have them to begin with. It could be that it either didn't get plugged in correctly or hasn't had the paddles coded in yet. This would make sense if it originally came with a base model steering wheel or a non paddle shift sports wheel and was replaced with a paddle shift wheel. Just my guess anyway 👍

    • @_AfterDarkGarage_
      @_AfterDarkGarage_  4 роки тому

      Also, if you can get the VIN number you can check it online to see the factory spec sheet and options for the car. I use mdecoder.com. That way you can see exactly how the car came from factory and what has been added later. This should give you an idea of whether the car came with paddles or not so you can at least eliminate that option.

      Yes you absolutely can do paddle shifter retrofits for e90 and e60 series automatic vehicles (can't be done on manual cars for obvious reasons). It will require purchasing another wheel though.
      If you already have the sport style wheel (round airbag), then you will need to buy a paddle shifter wheel as it has the cutouts in the back for paddles, the paddle shifters themselves, and a retrofit kit/harness. You will not need to buy a new airbag as you can just install your old one into the new wheel.
      If you have the non sport wheel (triangular shaped airbag), then you will need all the above PLUS a round airbag.
      You can google e60 paddle shifter retrofit and should find quite a few forum posts of what's required and even walkthroughs from people that have done the conversion before.
