I'm a fan of these. I've always wanted a complete Spider-Man collection and now it's feasible. I prefer omnibus but I'm happy to settle for these. I'm very pleased they've done this.
I think I'll just go with the old Essentials personally for older material. They're way cheaper secondhand (I'm no collector). As an artist, I prefer rough black and white pages for these older comics (and in general tbh) over the glossy paper where the colors are always way over saturated for some reason. Also so I can study the linework a lil better. In my experience they often have the pinups, I know they did in my early F4 volumes. But original pencils IS tempting...
The disjointed release schedule of the epic collections is strange but works if the publishers want to release a set of stories related to what the comics or movies are doing at the current moment. They're also worth the price of admission for any fan who can find a volume on their favorite characters. Hell, they even got some epic collections for more obscure characters and teams like Moon Knight and Excalibur.
I began reading Comics, both Marvel, DC, Vertigo, Image and non superheroe series 2 and a half years ago, and those epic collection had really helped me getting into the source material of my favorite MCU movies. Instead of just jumping on into Spider man, Iron Man and Hulk 700 something something, you can choose to begin with the fist year or a perticular story arch you there have been recomanded and etc.
Awesome video & content :) I definitely really like the Marvel Epic Collections even though they are a little on the pricey side. I've currently only got the Iron Fist epic collection: The Fury of Iron Fist and the Iron Man epic collection: The Enemy Within trades within my trade paperback collection right now but I will certainly be picking up a few more when money permits. I will say that the one downside and caveat with the two Iron Man epic collections is that the 2nd volume - Duel of Iron stops just short of collecting the entire Iron Monger storyline. Dual of Iron collects issues #167 through #195 and the oversized Iron Man Annuals #6 & #7. This leaves another 13 issues until O'Neil's run on the character ended, I sincerely hope that Marvel will release another epic collection reprinting issues #196 - #208 as it would be great to read the run in its entirety from #158 through and up to #208. Or at the very least I hope that Marvel releases a reprinted version of the Iron Monger storyline which took place within issues #193 - #200 and includes the 8 issues afterwards as well.
The essentials were great for some of the more obscure titles - can't see them bringing out a Marvel Horror epic set of Satana etc (or perhaps they will). Been mainly collecting epic editions from the Silver Age but some of the Omnibus / epic volumes do not overlap well (FF comes to mind). Omnibus editions are great for the letters pages as well as the over-sized pages but epics are so much easier to handle. Great video.
Thanks for this video. I had bought a bunch of the essentials in the past, due to how cheap they were and how much they got. But now that I've discovered the epic collections, selling them in favor of grabbing these higher quality editions seems worth it.
I'm thinking about starting to get the Amazing Spider-Man collections, but saw that some volume numbers were skipped and was wondering if that was correct.
Yep, it’s correct. They jump all over the place, the idea being you can read any volume without needing to have any backstory. I think jumping around chronologically also helps them keep the line exciting and fresh. Historically, numerical volumes of trade paperbacks always sell less as they get higher in number. I think this is trying to avoid that.
Really informative rundown, thank you! I have the first five Essentials volumes of Amazing Spider-Man and am on the edge of finally biting the bullet on the extra price and upgrading to the available Epic Collections that are out so far. Aside from the price, something that **might** irk me with the new EC books are the spines. The black with sharp, eyecatching colored elements looks good, as you showed here, but I've seen some of them on the shelf at my local comic store, and that horizontal line that runs across the spines doesn't always match up when you have books side by side on a shelf (sometimes they're *way* off). Maybe a bit of OCD, but that sort of mismatching stuff really bugs me with the display of books, and if I'm spending extra $$ on these things, then I don't want that sort of thing hurting the look of them together. DC changing their company logo every couple years is the same way, as well as Marvel switching their logo from red text on a white background to white text on a red background occasionally. Just the little details like that, when I want them to look seamless on a shelf.
I know exactly what you're talking about! It's so annoying when spines don't line up the way they're supposed to. What's even worse is when one of them doesn't even match at all. For instance, with Marvel Essentials, they changed the trade dress at least three times, and some of them look drastically different from other ones. I have Essential X-Men volumes that literally look like they were made by different companies. I feel your pain, brother.
I know I'm finding this late, but I LOVE the Epic Collections--they can't put them out fast enough. I'm so afraid that they'll stop before they release all of their Silver and Bronze age material. The extra material in the back of these Epic Collections is mostly taken from the corresponding Masterworks editions plus some material not found in the Masterwork editions--so you're getting a character's Essential and Masterwork books combined. I am so glad I didn't pick up the all but a few Essentials when they came out because I didn't want B&W. The Essentials I picked up were the ones that reprinted the B&W magazines like Tomb of Dracula, The Rampaging Hulk (1 vol), and Tales of the Zombie. I figured they were B&W already....
I love the Epic Collection for all the obvious reasons already stated. Marvel really nails it with this series, imho. I’m collecting my two favorite titles, Amazing Spider Man and Incredible Hulk. I had already started collecting the Amazing Spider Man Omnibus (before I knew about the Epics). But that’s okay. I plan on still sticking with the Omnibus. Even though they’ve only put out three so far, they are gorgeous and well worth collecting.
I lucked up and got the first three Amazing Spider Man Omnibus volumes for $50/each on Amazon, about a year ago. One thing that’s cool about it is that the first volume has the entire Ditko run!
I’ve noticed that some of these omnibus editions only out out one volume! I guess they’re testing the waters to see what sells. The Amazing Spider Man seems different, as they have already done three. Hopefully they continue putting them out. I think that Spider Man continues to be Marvel’s most popular title and hopefully they continue producing the Omnibus volumes. In the meantime...I’m loving these Epic Collections!
Agree it's a great way to get great runs for relatively cheap. My only complaint is the spine dress. Would look so much better if they had the series logos on them instead of the plain uniform type. They're kinda boring.
Hey dude! I love this collection too. I have some of the books from the collection. I have been buying them from Chapters! I actually have here right beside me is The Amazing Spider-Man (Spider-Man No More) I'm paying about $52:00 per volume. I really enjoyed listening you talk about the collection in this video. I am planing to buy most of what you showed in the video. Thanks Craig Irons.
These are great collections but are some of these out of print? I can't seem to find some volumes like X-Men vol 1, FF4 Vol 1 and Iron Man Vol 1. They are so hard to find without killing your wallet. Overall good collections and good video.
A lot of the Epic Collections are really cheap at the moment, but a few of them like X-Men Vol 1, Fantastic Four Vol 1, and Iron Man Vol 1 are kinda rare to find and run about a $100 dollars or more. Now I don’t know if they’re gonna print more or not, but it might be good to capitalize and get some of these bad boys while they’re cheap. Luckily I was able to get FF and Iron Man when they were only 20 something, but I really wish I had that X-Men.
It looks like they’re out of print at the moment. I suspect they’ll be back in print at some point. Marvel is pretty good about reprinting their trades, but sometimes it takes them a while to get to it. Sometimes it’s even a few years. If these are going for a lot of money on the secondary market, that means there’s still high demand, so Marvel will want to get in on that revenue. Sucks for right now, though.
Man so much stuff out there to choose 😬So this series epic has so many vol per title, at the end if you put all them together they will follow sequentially ?Thx
i love the epic collections! great gift for a kid. instocktrades is your friend. very impressive dvd library behind you. marvel has been doing somethings right. the 1 dollar true believers. and the 8 dollar marvel tales gives a great look at a character from 3 or 4 eras.
They just released the trade of Spidey: Freshman Year, which collects 12 issues, for 12.99, too! I’ll be reviewing it on the channel in the near future.
New to comics. If i were to read all of the epuc collection will i be more or less caught up with the backstories of the characters?. Trying to find a starting point for marvel and its all very overwhelming
Because Epic Collections aren't being published chronologically, it would take a very long time to get caught up on the back stories of the characters by only reading that line. If you're new to comics and you want to dive in, I would recommend the Marvel Unlimited digital app. There are over 20,000 comics on it and they have an entire section of the service that provides jumping on points for the characters. I did a video about digital comics here: ua-cam.com/video/_VfTTHS46Co/v-deo.html That being said, most comics have always been written with the understanding that any issue could be someone's first issue, and comics have an explanation on the very first page of who the characters are and what the book is about. Good luck!
Great video. I’ve got every Spidey Omnibus so far and they are my pride and joy but thinking about the epic collection for pure reading ease! I like that they include Spectacular Spider-Man as well. Do you know what number they are planning to go up to? I mean could we potentially see Superior Spider-Man in Epic Collection format?
do these collections involve stories from other characters? because i started reading a spiderman comic called Kraven's last hunt and it starts with iron mans son well i think it's his son and the story is called man of the year.
One of the hallmarks of Marvel Comics is that these characters all inhabit the same world, so there are frequently guest stars and cameos from other characters in each of the books. But as far as printing stories outside of the focus of each Epic Collection, I can't think of any examples of that. I just checked by collection to make sure, and I don't really see any crossover books. These stay pretty dedicated to the story at hand.
I don't recall any Iron Man issues playing into Kraven's Last Hunt. I think it's probably just a character element being used to tell the story in the Spidey books.
I am collecting the first three amazing Spiderman omnibus can I go from the Omnibus number three to a certain number in the Epix collection because I don’t have a number 4 yet in the omnibus
Yes. The Epic Collections stand alone and are supposed to be able to be read in any order. They're not being published chronologically (in order). The whole idea is that Marvel wants you to be able to pick one up and start reading with no baggage.
Cereal At Midnight I like reading them in order I have the first Omni bus I’m going to pick up the second omnibus this summer I’ll pick up the third omnibus next year
You could also read every single issue of Amazing Spider-Man on the Marvel Unlimited app. If you use promo code GHOST, the first month is only 2 cents.
I just started getting into reading marvel comics and I wanted to know where do I start and what’s the very first marvel to read ?. Like do it by release dates order ? Story arc order ?.
I think you should start with whatever seems interesting to you. Are you reading these Epic Collections or using the Marvel Unlimited app? Trying to read things in story order might drive you crazy, and these Epic Collections aren't being published in chronological order. The idea is that any one of them can be picked up and read with no baggage. I'd say grab one, see if you like the art, and just dive in! Start with what you're interested in and just go from there. I'll help you in any way I can, but that's how I got into it. I'd pick up a random issue because the cover was cool. Before I knew it, I was hooked.
Cereal At Midnight it kind is driving me crazy haha . Well right now I finished Thanos quest 1&2 on marvel unlimited . And reading flash from dc the new comics
The ugly truth is that modern comics aren't designed to be welcoming to new readers. Marvel Unlimited has a "Marvel Must Reads" section of the app designed to be good starting points for new readers, so that's good.
I’m new at buying these compilations on Internet. Which one would you recommend to an X-men fan who stopped reading the magazines by the end of the Onslaught saga?
I can't offer much help on that one. I only have one X-Men Epic Collection to date and it's "Children of the Atom," the very first issues from the sixties by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. I would say just go with your gut. Only buy something that interests you.
@@CerealAtMidnight absolutely but I came across a book called "wolverine essentials 4" and I wondered if it's also in black and white and poor quality paper? Any idea?
Essentials are definitely black and white and cheap paper. Those are the comic book equivalents of phone books. They were really great fifteen years ago, and I have a ton of Marvel Essentials, but the Epic Collections are so much better. Nice paper, full color.
Only thing I dislike about the Epic Collections is the glossy paper. Classic comics should always be printed on matte. The Knightfall collections and the Byrne-era Man of Steel paperbacks from DC are beautifully printed on (high quality) matte paper and the super bright, saturated colors look soooooooo much better than they do on ultra-white glossy stock.
I believe Epic Collections use a few different paper stocks depending on the era of the comics they're reprinting. I just ran to check my collection before I commented and most of the comics from the 60s, 70s, and 80s are printed on what I would consider matte paper. Some of the newer collections, like more recent Star Wars comics, do use glossy paper. Is there one in particular that bugs you?
Pretty much, yes. Each "Volume One" starts with the earliest stories of that character. Just keep in mind that these are not being released chronologically, as in vol. 1, 2, 3, etc. Some of them jump from volume 1 to volume 13, then go back to volume 6, and so forth.
I like the epic line but it is still not what i'm looking for. They did what i'm looking for 2 time in the epic line with the first hulk and silver surfer. What i'm looking for is really a chronological appearance of a character. Like Spider-Man. I want all the story that he appeared in one time frame. Like if a story in marvel team-up occur after an amazing Spider-Man. I want a book that have to two of them together. I've heard that Marvel is doing that with the symbiose saga of printing all the story chronologically. That i will buy. I have them all separately, but i want them bind together.
Even though the Epic Collections are being printed out of chronological order, they will eventually be what you're talking about. They've now printed "volume one" books for quite a few of the titles like X-Men, Spider-Man, Thor, and so on, and ten years from now when all the volumes are printed, you'll be able to line them up chronologically on your shelf and they'll represent every single issue of those titles in order. Epic Collections also include crossover issues when they're important to the story. For instance, the Captain America: Man Without a Country Epic Collection includes all the Captain America comics from that story, but also the relevant issues of Iron Man, Thor, and Avengers which continue the story. I believe they've made the decision to publish the volumes out of order for sales purposes because sales drop off very quickly on collections that are issued chronologically. If you look at other companies who have published chronological archives of comics like the Complete Peanuts and the Complete Dick Tracy, sales were almost non-existent by the time the volumes were in the double digits. "Volume One" sales were way up in the thousands, but volume 17, for example, sold VERY few copies. Marvel is trying to avoid this by reprinting these volumes out of order, but they'll eventually print ALL of it, and they are numbered so you can line them up chronologically.
I love these! I have 39 of them and always looking to get more. I have a particular interest in the Silver Age Marvel when they first introduced most of their biggest heroes. Trying to more or less read them chronologically. By now they’ve published each of the first 4 Cap, Avengers and Thor books, with Thor 5 coming next. The first 3 of Spider-man and Daredevil are available, so you can read a good chunk of those character’s early runs in order.
Cool vid. Epic Collection is a gr8 idea from Marvel, I bought volume 1 of Spider-Man, Avengers, & the Fantastic Four. Currently looking to get volume 1 of X-Men, Iron Man, & Silver Surfer. It allows to have the same stories without paying as much.
diiferent colors than originals - computer colors - different comic books - better reprints than "essentials" but still bad reprints, still waiting till they reprint them in original form
They have their paperback Omnibus editions, approx 450 pages or so with sets such as Brave and the Bold vol 1 etc. They have no attached name like 'epic' though. I assume they are basically doing 2 paperbacks to one hardback. Certainly a lot easier to handle than the hardback volumes (the dimensions of the pages are smaller in the TPBs)
The paper actually changes from edition to edition, depending on the era of the comic and what was being used at the time. So some of them have a very matte finish style of paper, and some of them have a high gloss style of paper. Older comics look better on the lower gloss matte finish, 90s comics seem to look better on the glossy stock.
This is hilarious. You said the same thing my video said, but then said you disagree. Either way, your engagement supports this video so thanks for watching, commenting, AND clicking the thumb.
I'm a fan of these. I've always wanted a complete Spider-Man collection and now it's feasible. I prefer omnibus but I'm happy to settle for these. I'm very pleased they've done this.

I collected the whole Matt Fraction's *"Invincible Iron Man"* run from 2008 to 2012, it was amazing, loved it !

Some of those old Essentials are way over a hundred bucks now. If you've got a source, more power to ya!

Cereal At Midnight that app shows what comics to read in order ?.
Cereal At Midnight so that must read sections explains what to read first ?
Are these the same size as a trade in terms of height and width?
Yes, but some are thicker than others in terms of page count, depending on how much material is being included.
How goes your epic collection now ?
Iv'e switched to digital and am selling most of them off. It's been a great change for me.
I get e book version for $5 when they go on sale on Amazon.com
Hey, are all volume one of each character their original origin story?
Great info
i wish marvel would start doing sub mariner epics
I'd be in for that. If Namor ever pops up in a Marvel movie, I bet they will then.
what about the marvel masterworks
I can’t find some for under $100??
Looks like some have gone out of print. Hopefully they get reprinted.
Do you change your hair style in every video?
I love these! I have 39 of them and always looking to get more. I have a particular interest in the Silver Age Marvel when they first introduced most of their biggest heroes. Trying to more or less read them chronologically. By now they’ve published each of the first 4 Cap, Avengers and Thor books, with Thor 5 coming next. The first 3 of Spider-man and Daredevil are available, so you can read a good chunk of those character’s early runs in order.
Do not wait a year some of these go out of stock
go on amazon
This video may have saved Xmas for me and a relationship for her 🤣 My Xmas is sorted.
Does anyone do kindle? It's even cheaper.
ARE ESSENTIALS WORTH ANYTHING ?
Some of them are out of print and going for quite a bit of money.
Still waiting for ghost rider to be released on epic collection
Comic art looks better on newsprint
Get a deal on remaindered books :)
Yep. Most of mine a remainders. My omnibuses, too. A little black dot means at least 50% off.
You inspired my channel
diiferent colors than originals
- computer colors
- different comic books
- better reprints than "essentials" but still bad reprints,
still waiting till they reprint them in original form
And now Marvel rise the prices of Epic Collections so...
These books are now like $60-70
It's crazy. Why Marvel would let them go out of print is beyond me.
Has DC done something similar?
I wish they did, but no, DC has nothing directly comparable to the Epic Collection line.
Cereal At Midnight I hope it happens some day
They have their paperback Omnibus editions, approx 450 pages or so with sets such as Brave and the Bold vol 1 etc. They have no attached name like 'epic' though. I assume they are basically doing 2 paperbacks to one hardback. Certainly a lot easier to handle than the hardback volumes (the dimensions of the pages are smaller in the TPBs)
Cheaper than omnibuses.
I was so disappointed when I found out the marvel essentials books where black and white on really cheap paper.
What do you mean with paper?
Paper? Can you be more specific? This was a couple of hundred videos ago for us.
Sorry, what I mean what is the type of paper that they use?
Are they like the omnibus paper?
The paper actually changes from edition to edition, depending on the era of the comic and what was being used at the time. So some of them have a very matte finish style of paper, and some of them have a high gloss style of paper. Older comics look better on the lower gloss matte finish, 90s comics seem to look better on the glossy stock.
Ok
These would be appealing if they were hard cover. I hate TPB or soft cover stuff personally.
The Fantastic Four are the Best Marvel Team.
Jeg kan godt lide edderkoppen og projekt x

Disliked! Epic Collection is still so much better than Essentials.
You dislike that you agree with me?
@@CerealAtMidnight Yes.
Haha!
@@CerealAtMidnight Also, I just dislike the video.
This is hilarious. You said the same thing my video said, but then said you disagree. Either way, your engagement supports this video so thanks for watching, commenting, AND clicking the thumb.
