This helped me realize that.

And the cool part about finishing one video or book or whatever is that you eliminate the need for all the other of that kind. Thus narrowing down your scope by a LOT.
Thanks Vaughn, this is something that has caused me to give up on several pursuits because of information overwhelm and trying to find the 'perfect' or best way.

Bro, just the intro of this video got me thinking when you said, “We are often looking for the most optimal way, because we don’t want to waste time. However it’s kind of backwards because we waste a lot of time looking for the optimal way”. Someone who has severe anxiety like me, I am always overthinking of doing things optimally, even just for new material things like, if I get this thing and sell my old one, it would last me longer. Or in the past few months when I was deciding to learn which programming framework I should learn and which one is best suited that supported in the future. I wasted so much time "researching". Instead, I should just enjoy what's in the moment. I've been trying to find ways to tackle my anxiety and that quote alone is probably the best I've heard in a while. Amazing and thank you!

Hey Vaughn, I found your channel a few days ago, and since then I've watched all your videos. I feel like you are a little elf in my head who is already a more experienced me and tries to help me through his videos. I don't know if this makes sense, but I feel something similar. Hey thank you! I try to take a relatable approach so people can draw their own ideas from it and get moving so that means a lot! Wish you success as well.
Good to see another video from you. I binged a bunch but the advice that really stuck with me the most was "You can do multiple talents at once, you just have to start them one at a time." This was really good advice for me, who was trying to do a combination of Calisthenics, Dancing, DJ-ing, Spanish and all that. Even dedicating myself to only doing 5 minutes at a time was really difficult for me to do. So taking a step back and prioritizing one was like a huge weight off my chest. Like I was so relieved for the moment all I have to do is the one hobby, maintaining my place and work. I personally decided my only hobby for a while would be dancing, which is perfect for me because it's my favorite thing to do and to me it doesn't matter if I'm terrible at anything else as long as I'm really good at dancing. So thank you for the great advice, it's helping a lot. Keep up the good work
Yeah I tried that method myself a bit and it just felt like way too much. But in the long term yeah, one a time actually gives you MORE results than if you were to do a little everyday in them. A little each day is perfect once you have them though! I'll talk more about that soon.
Shiny object syndrome is the reason i didnt want to click your video, it wasnt shiny enough haha. it is so true, but i know your name i know your videos and i know you are right. So i had to go watch this for myself, cause i know i needed to know this too. Its kinda nice to hear that someone else has had the same learning problems as me and it helps me relax about it. I think that's important for when i next will tacoe something in my life. I have been postponing earning money in my life cause yes, - i didnt want to waste my time. This has offset me for years with my life. And i already know it hasn't been the right choice for various reasons. Not just shiny object syndrome. but on the days where i could and wanted to take a new step in my life. that "SOS" tripped me for sure. thanks a lot for the videos man 👍
One thing that's helped me is a mindset switch along with having fun with what it is you are doing. Fun is super important because practice isn't meant to be boring tedious yes but boring never. When you have fun with something you are more engaged with it and will naturally pick it up at a faster pace compared to being bored out of your mind where your focus is split and mentally you are not all there for what it is you are doing. Also taking notes physically writing them down helps retain information (you still have to put in the work) expecting tutorials to make you magically better overnight is a trap that a lot of people fall for especially now I am super guilty of this where I'd watch tutorial after tutorial trying to learn this one thing never taking notes and my progress was very sporadic. Also treating yourself like a friend helps a lot as we tend to be way harsher on ourselves than we would a friend which tends to be a lot more negative focused rather than positive where if you were giving advice to a friend you'd likely input more positivity in your words mixed with critique. Also taking care of your mental health and having at least 1 or 2 break days a week helps. Treat your hobbies like you would working out you wouldn't and shouldn't go 7 days a week because if you do the work is likely far less effective and you run the risk of injury significantly more you need break days for both body and mind and to come back fully refreshed. Learning how to learn is a skill one that can waste a lot of time it's why people do go to schools for music and art it gives them a structure that they are held accountable to where a lot of self learners simply don't have that or for whatever reason choose not to. You need to structure practice and treat it as if you are in school because you are the teacher and student when learning by yourself you may have video mentors but end of the day only you can hold yourself accountable. A lot of people break down college or university courses and apply them to their own self taught studies. A lot of schools curriculums are online free to the public you just lose out on the networking potential you get from school and the community (which you can find locally or online but takes a bit more effort on your part) I myself have not done this but I know and am aware that many do and it gets effective results because they have structure. Also try not to tell yourself that "I SHOULD do this" because naturally our inner teenager comes out and wants to rebel against should. It's less about discipline and willpower and more about creating a structure or paying someone else to make one for you and setting goals that are realistic. Online learning can be a double edged sword because it has many traps in place mainly due to how the platform is structed to keep you constantly engaged and the human brain naturally wanting the path of least resistance so we always tend to look for the quickest path even though the quickest path often is the most "dangerous" and the results won't really carry you it's more setting you up for failure in the long run as the foundation you often get from doing it quick is very much not there which can slow down your progress by years. There are some people out there who think you have to be born with X skill to be good at it and those people are simply the ones who wanted it fast tried and gave up because they didn't build a foundation that you could gradually build up on over the course of months to years. Learning a skill is easy, master is not. Most people give up once the dunning kruger effect hits if you push past that and build a foundation you will excel do not expect results over night skills especially creative ones tend to have a really really long pay off time but once you learn it you know it and people will look at you as if you were naturally gifted it's weird but people only see the end result rarely the beginning and the struggle the amount of blood, sweat, tears and pure effort that was put into a craft but that aspect is what made the greats, great. (I seriously hope youtube doesn't delete this because it feels like every time I write longer comments they tend to be but this is a topic I feel fairly passionate about and enjoy talking about)
Good points, a lot of this I have discussed in other videos also. Fun is good but I think people mistake it for novelty sometimes and miss out of good results. Especially because some aspects are just not fun no matter how you slice it. But in general yeah, it should not be a soul crushing task Lol. Otherwise someone should just do something else’s
I Learn what I can when I can every day I am Led of the Lord , to pick up different way"s to. enhance my Keyboard , Songwriting And guitar playing, Singing Action is Key, Just Do It
I am the guy who bought a new guitar every time I got the feeling I really wanna get started again and for motivation. Now I had 5 guitars at one point and still coud not play sh*t xd I gave two away for free to friends now. Meanwhile I thought about getting a piano because "maybe its easier if i only have to press buttons". My mandarin studies are also not where they should be. Instead of actually learning I am programming my own learning app currently, which at least I think is alright. Programming is the only thing in free time I can really get behind currently apart from sport. Going to the gym and playing tennis is already eating a lot of time. Then also work ofc, working over hours a lot, but mainly because I also enjoy it a lot. I also really like playing chess but that also gets way too less attention these days. I can relate to so many of. your videos. Just down to earth relatable content presented in a calm manner. Please continue what your doing :)
Thank you! I think just being aware of this issue and not feeling bad about it is the main way that I avoid it. So I just hope that approach works for others. Sounds like you have a solid foundation at least that you can revisit with a clearer mind! And will Do!
I do this with a lot of my hobbies. I've realized I spend so much random time not doing what I should just work on. Like practicing guitar instead of looking for a random lesson.
I've started learning Dutch this year, I also will begin playing guitar at some point when I can afford one. I haven't been to school since I was 7. I'm 16 now. so my math and grammar isn't very good but this year I realized that I've been wasting my time not doing much at all for the last few years so I though i might as well just start with something! I always feel like I've missed out on things in the past years but it's slowly starting to bother me less and these videos really do help a lot! It's not always the easiest to find time for things just because my family has a lot of dogs and it takes a lot of time to take care of them for the day! I'm really hoping to get better at these things within the next 2 years or so, but just starting to do something already makes me feel a lot better! Thank you for these great videos, and sorry for not being very articulate! I also kind of hope to learn Korean as well in the future
That’s awesome to see this at 16, I was a blockhead at 16 Lol so you’ll be good to go 👌. And a lot of stuff you would have learned is far easier to learn online anyways so you got it. 👌 Glad these help!
3:34 This is exactly what happened with me when I discovered Cure Dolly's videos on Japanese structure after having spent countless hours doing it the textbook way... Lol, it opened my eyes basically from the first second...
My shiny object syndrome is bit different, in my case, I already want to learn A, B, C subject, then I see other people with years of experience in subject D, then I add that D subject into my collection that I want to learn, and it keep expanding.
Try both and see what works for you, I personally like longer sessions and maybe split g that into 2 session in the day. I find that I can really get in the zone if I do that. But I know some people who get good results by splitting it up throughout the day too. So I would say try both, and see which one works for you. Or alternate.
I think it kind of boils down to information overload. When we know "too" much, we just get more and more stagnant. And when we know just fine, not overly a lot, that's when real action takes place. (That's what an old man told me, anyway.) Really though, your tips are sick, you rock! Also again, God bless! (yes, i say that a lot, but why not to? 🤷♂)
I really like your outlook to this and l have the same issue with social media l have to redownload everything when l need something. I do want to ask since you look fit how did you balance fitness and playing an instrument?
Fitness is all about going in the gym, creating a very strong stimulus and then getting out of the gym. I'll talk about this soon, but you can get a LOT done in 45 min - 1 hour. The magic happens when you are at rest anyways (fat loss and muscle building). Not much actually happens at the gym. I'll talk about this soon!
I'm going to make a video about this soon and how to address it step by step Lol. I used to have a long watch later playlist. Reaching the limit is wild work though, Mine was around 2k. But I got you.
@@mfigmac I thought about that, but I think it would be even more confusing because it typically refers to ‘a means to an ends.’ Rather than an Absolute outcome. Checkmate is absolute. Whereas with Zug (though uncommon) there’s still hope. I rather people just know that the literal only wrong thing to do is not take action on their goals.
Seeing as you play both guitar and piano, which instrument of the two would you recommend learning first? I would assume piano since you would’ve have to learn music theory first and that could be applicable in learning other instruments like the guitar. If it’s piano then what resources would you recommend in learning the instrument?
Which ever interests you most tbh, I learned guitar years before I ever thought about playing piano. Whatever you like more will bleed over into the other one. Doesn’t have to be a particular order imo.
I am really REALLY guilty of it with synthesizers. Spent so much money on gear over the years, but I've ever really been productive with electronic music production with a laptop and ableton and nothing else.
I don't know how, but you are incredible at finding all these ways our mind gets us trapped, paralyzed and unable to progress and achieve our goals. All the best to you.
Deliberate practice, and listening and repeating after Native Speakers over and over again. I am going to talk about this in a future video actually. That helps a lot though.
Commit to them both before I did anything else in the day (like fun stuff I mean). That gave me the best results. I was able to 'get it out of the way' in a sense.
I call it gear addiction. When I get some momentum in skill building, I get bored, and see the shiny new toy. The gear addiction is real, and can be very distracting. I can see why some talented people end up just being gear reviewers, or tech reviewers.
yeah it's definitely a conscious effort that needs to be addressed daily. Knowing that helps a lot. But if we think it's a one time fix and this issue goes away, that's where the danger is. The fight gets easier overtime though for sure.
and btw.. my watch later watch list on youtube have been maxed out at 5.000 for a few years now .. just so you know 😂 .. the perfect video doesnt exist. i would have found it. but we can be lucky we have effective videos like yours instead.

Not just shiny object syndrome. but on the days where i could and wanted to take a new step in my life. that "SOS" tripped me for sure. thanks a lot for the videos man 👍
Sometimes it's uncomfortable to face what we know is good for us Lol, i'm included in this. But glad the videos are helping!
I Learn what I can when I can every day I am Led of the Lord , to pick up different way"s to. enhance my Keyboard , Songwriting And guitar playing, Singing Action is Key, Just Do It
Indeed 🙌
Great video! Definitely watched in 1 minute and THEN COMMENTED XD
Thank you!, & I guess this was your shiny object Lol
At least you know what to do now. 🤝
Some good takeaways in this video. Thanks Vaughn.
Glad it helps 💪 no problem
I do the same thing with my social media. I don’t have enough self control to not scroll. Thanks for another great video!
Glad I’m not alone Lol, it was the best choice I’ve made in terms of productivity 😂.
And thank you!
I am the guy who bought a new guitar every time I got the feeling I really wanna get started again and for motivation. Now I had 5 guitars at one point and still coud not play sh*t xd
I gave two away for free to friends now.
Hvala!
Thank you 🙏
I do this with a lot of my hobbies. I've realized I spend so much random time not doing what I should just work on. Like practicing guitar instead of looking for a random lesson.
Awareness, that’s all it takes. 👌
I've started learning Dutch this year, I also will begin playing guitar at some point when I can afford one. I haven't been to school since I was 7. I'm 16 now. so my math and grammar isn't very good
but this year I realized that I've been wasting my time not doing much at all for the last few years so I though i might as well just start with something!
That’s awesome to see this at 16,
I was a blockhead at 16 Lol so you’ll be good to go 👌.
And a lot of stuff you would have learned is far easier to learn online anyways so you got it. 👌
Glad these help!
Aye man I love that practicing part in the end, it really gives something to the video idk but thanks
Thank you! 🙏
It was a last minute thought, but I think I may do it more often.
Thank you so much dude respect ❤
🙌
Love this channel!
Thank you 🙌
3:34 This is exactly what happened with me when I discovered Cure Dolly's videos on Japanese structure after having spent countless hours doing it the textbook way... Lol, it opened my eyes basically from the first second...
Yeah it's always nice to find what actually works vs what feels productive but doesn't work.
Amazing channel bro. Subbed
Thank you! 💪
I love it You method i appreciation you 💪strong man
💪
Your music is excellent. It sounds to me like a mix of marty Friedman and some very tranquil sounds of nature
Thank you! 🙏
Hey Vaughn, would you be able to make a video about how you went about pursuing software engineering? Keep up the great work and videos! 🤙🏻
I can sometime yeah! Mostly conceptual things and my exp. And then maybe some channels I like I’ll recommend to people.
Watching you from Central Asia 🌏🎉
🙌
Nice video, bro.
🙌
My shiny object syndrome is bit different, in my case, I already want to learn A, B, C subject, then I see other people with years of experience in subject D, then I add that D subject into my collection that I want to learn, and it keep expanding.
As long as you just focus on the timeline that is fine. The problem is jumping from B to D for example without FULLY grasping B.
Grazie mille!❤❤❤
Prego! ❤
Very helpful video
🙌
Do you think it is necessary to have an hour long or longer learning session? Instead of like multiple 5 minutes practice throughout the day?
Try both and see what works for you,
I personally like longer sessions and maybe split g that into 2 session in the day.
I find that I can really get in the zone if I do that.
But I know some people who get good results by splitting it up throughout the day too. So I would say try both, and see which one works for you.
Or alternate.
Got work to do..... but first, Vaughns new vid.
🙌 aye
I think it kind of boils down to information overload. When we know "too" much, we just get more and more stagnant. And when we know just fine, not overly a lot, that's when real action takes place. (That's what an old man told me, anyway.) Really though, your tips are sick, you rock!
Also again, God bless! (yes, i say that a lot, but why not to? 🤷♂)
You can never have too many God Bless's Lol
I really like your outlook to this and l have the same issue with social media l have to redownload everything when l need something. I do want to ask since you look fit how did you balance fitness and playing an instrument?
Fitness is all about going in the gym, creating a very strong stimulus and then getting out of the gym.
I'll talk about this soon, but you can get a LOT done in 45 min - 1 hour.
The magic happens when you are at rest anyways (fat loss and muscle building). Not much actually happens at the gym.
I'll talk about this soon!
@@vaughngene looking forward to it then (;
"That Watch Later playlist that is probably at a thousand"
That's rookie numbers, the limit is 5.000 and I'm constantly removing and adding new ones 😂
I'm going to make a video about this soon and how to address it step by step Lol. I used to have a long watch later playlist. Reaching the limit is wild work though, Mine was around 2k.
But I got you.
Hi, Vaughn! The chess concept you're talking about ("you play, you lose") is not checkmate, is "zugzwang" or just "zug". Cheers.
@@mfigmac I thought about that, but I think it would be even more confusing because it typically refers to ‘a means to an ends.’
Rather than an Absolute outcome.
Checkmate is absolute.
Whereas with Zug (though uncommon) there’s still hope.
I rather people just know that the literal only wrong thing to do is not take action on their goals.
I HAVE THIS with this really good Arabic book I have
Great vid
Thank you 🙌
Seeing as you play both guitar and piano, which instrument of the two would you recommend learning first? I would assume piano since you would’ve have to learn music theory first and that could be applicable in learning other instruments like the guitar. If it’s piano then what resources would you recommend in learning the instrument?
Which ever interests you most tbh,
I learned guitar years before I ever thought about playing piano.
Whatever you like more will bleed over into the other one. Doesn’t have to be a particular order imo.
Piano From Scratch is the UA-cam channel I started with. Really good channel.
Thank you for responding
I am really REALLY guilty of it with synthesizers. Spent so much money on gear over the years, but I've ever really been productive with electronic music production with a laptop and ableton and nothing else.
I don't know how, but you are incredible at finding all these ways our mind gets us trapped, paralyzed and unable to progress and achieve our goals. All the best to you.
Glad it helps! and I guess trial and error and learning from that has really helped me a lot.
Hello. Curious if you've taken the Myers-Briggs test and know your personality type? I appreciate your content, thanks.
I have, I'm an INTJ-A. And no problem!
@@vaughngene I had an idea, me too.
Honestly that is what is going for me... i lost my love for computer games and it all faded throughout school
Yeah sometimes things are around for a season. Especially games.
I have over 10 watch later playlists that are at around a thousand 😬
Diabolical way to live Lol.
I’ll make a video about how to address this soon.
It’s a process I did before.
Do you have any tips on how to learn without getting intimated? For e.g. I'm finding Japanese quite intimidating and wondering if I'll ever get it.
Deliberate practice, and listening and repeating after Native Speakers over and over again.
I am going to talk about this in a future video actually.
That helps a lot though.
Hi. Can you do something around how to lose weight?
I can talk about this sometime yeah!, I think it’s extremely over complicated so I have some input that should help a lot.
How have you juggled software engineering and Japanese? (I wanna do the same juggle with my Arabic)
The fight gets easier overtime though for sure.
epic
🙌
and btw.. my watch later watch list on youtube have been maxed out at 5.000 for a few years now .. just so you know 😂 .. the perfect video doesnt exist. i would have found it. but we can be lucky we have effective videos like yours instead.
I didn't know there was a limit until now but yeah, you may wanna sort that out Lol,
I'll probably address that soon in a stand alone video.
Make 1000 pots if u know the story , u will not afraid of making mistakes
Thank you! Great video, you got me thinking of reframing my goal on how I want to learn Spanish you made a great point! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🩵🩵🩵
I'll have more language video coming eventually so hopefully those will help! but yes having a clear language goal really got me good results.
@@vaughngene Awesome! Thank you,looking forward to it!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🩵🩵🩵
Learning checkmate 👌🏾 I've fallen down the not doing anything slope in the last week so it's time to get back on the horse as they say. As always, I really appreciated this video. Can't wait to see what's in store for the community that you're creating!
Yep never too late,
I find that being aware really is the key.
And glad it helps!
