    Absolutely *love* Andy Gray. One of the best pundits ever. Spoke *with as* much sense as the late, great Jimmy Hill did. His opinion here is *spot on* , and I cannot forget his commentary during "FIFA 08 PS2". That *still* sparks a lot of thoughts in my mind. We *need* him back on TV along with Richard Keys, another one who spoke sense. *Who cares* if they spoke racist comments, everyone makes mistakes. We are *really* lacking these two when it comes to football analysis.

    England were just not good enough, I was at trafalger square that day and we all were just so ashamed by the England football team, they simply have no passion for their country. No matter who England employ as there next manager will make no difference what so ever.
    A country of England's stature should be trying to win a world cup every time. It has been 20 years since England competed at a world cup.
    English football is obsessed with physical play and is twenty years behind the technical standard of Spanish football .
    If England starts concentrating on technical football maybe the 5-7 year old's of today will win a world cup in 20 years.

    Look I am an England fan but you have to be organized/committed first (square one) before the talents can express themselves (more room). England have missed square one since the 90s. Its ridiculous why they wont do whatever's necessary to win more games, then why play for your country? The real problem must be so deep rooted, that's why it is not easily solved. But in the GErmany game, England had chances but were 2nd best throughout. My honest opinion. Seriously, something is wrong with Eng.

    • @SuperTed19021
      @SuperTed19021 4 роки тому +1

      Poor excuse. It's because why don't develop enough players who *are* even suitable for international level, our system does not get our youth playing to learn skills (our youth culture is *all* about WINNING!), and/or our coaches do not encourage individual skill at a *young* enough age. It's embarrassing that Wales with their population and resources can produce a Gareth Bale and England cannot. Says it all right there. If you took all foreign players out of the English game, I swear it would make next to *no* difference.

      Haha.. And on a serious note, Klinsmann, Löw, Klopp and all those high level German managers are graduates of elite level German coaching schools. They have to be freaking good to be one. And just because their playing careers were not stellar (Klinsmann aside), they'll start doubting their coaching skills too? Typical. England focuses too much on ex pros to be coaches, thereby missing out on knowledgeable non pros who are good coaches and managers. They never highlight the lack of and quality of coaching here in England.

If we *had* won something like Euro 96, I would believe it, but considering the fact we *never* even got to a European Championship final (Euro 1996 was our best chance and we f***ed it up big time), or our only major honour is winning a World Cup when there were no stand out team and the football gave footballers concussions, we are only known on the world stage aside from 1 or 2 exceptions for sheer and never ending failure.

  • @pritzi101

    As a German, all I can say about the problem is teamwork. On paper, every Germany team at the World Cup is dismissed as crap and lacking in skill, whilst every English team is hyped up, and yet, Germany ALWAYS do well and England ALWAYS do poorly. Not just the WC but the Euros too! Why? England simply cannot play as a team, a manager who can forge a team will be the only one who can get them to play well. Far too many superstars on the team who think that they're God's gift to England.

    • @MrAnotherworld23

      Absolutely correct my friend very well said. (I'm English as well haha)
      We English fans and media are too ignorant to even contend that our premier league maybe the richest in the world only because of the foreign talent it attracts, only a small percentage of it are actually English players who are not world class, not even close...
      We will never have a successful national team unless we start to render our own league much more English and less foreign than it has always been.

Graham Taylor failed to qualify England for USA 94, Kevin Keegan couldn't get England past the group stage at Euro 2000, Steve McLaren couldn't qualify England for Euro 2008. Ashley Cole had a solid tournament, and Gerrard played okay. Everyone one else was awful. Barry isn't international class. Same applies to Johnson. He is terrible defensively. As for Capello, I still can't believe how stubborn he was... Crouch should have started in Heskey's place. Heskey worked hard as usual, but we needed a striker, not someone who plays so deep and is as clinical as a defender in front of goal. I just wish we had sacked himafter this. He got it so wrong.

    England are a quarter final standard team - that is par for the course in the last 74 years. The problem is England don't produce great managers. We've only ever won one tournament and that was 60 years ago and all of the games were played at Wembley and needed a dodgy goal to win that one. Let's stop this cycle of hope and then despair. Until England have a home tournament, a great manager and a great group of players playing a system where they can create chances, they aren't winning anything. 2028 then?

That's how they became high level coaches for their country. Not just playing at high level won't make you a great coach in Germany. That doesn't work. Playing career and coaching career are two separate entities there. Plus they have a nationwide system.

Even when things clearly were going pear shaped and needed changing, he still made the wrong choices. I'll never forget his decison to snub Crouch and bring on Heskey against Germany. I do think Andy talks a lot of common sense here, such as an Englishman in charge, who dosen't have to have had a great club managerial career beforehand, look atJoahim Low with Germany, didn't really have a particually great management career beforehand, (only major trophy he won beforehand was the German cup), but look what he's done with the German team, not just winning the world cup, but getting Germany to the minimum of the semi finals at every tournament hes managed at, however I will say that his job has been a bit easier over the years, due to the amount of top quality players that Germany has produced over the years, (better in terms of skill and technical ability), which is something England hasn't produced as much over the years.

    the point he abouts to make at 2:47 is for me the main point of why we were poor imo, people complain at the lack of passion i think that arguement is complete bull, passion is one of the things our british culture is associated with and everytime our team loses we blame this when really the team and actual football ability on the day wasnt good enough

    • @MrAnotherworld23
      @MrAnotherworld23 2 роки тому

      Yeah English players do have passion but what they lack is character. This game was a perfect example (not to mention the iceland defeat 6 years later!!) Not one english player on that pitch (apart from david james) showed any character or courage to get on the ball and make something happen even when the odds were stacked against us they were just dordling around the pitch when not in possession exerting minimal effort and both players and manager were to blame for that embarrasing performance

  • @11Gibb11

    people are to knee jerk in england, England have class players but thier is a lack of a team. Example for Chelsea lampard has a team pretty much build around him for england he plays as a deep lying midfielder. Gerrard on the left for england is self explanetary. Rooney wasn't as bad as people thought at the world cup although amittidily he was still poor he should have played in the same positions for united as he does for england. 3 of english best players all playing out of positions says it.

    Venables got England to the semi final of Euro 96 at HOME. That wasn't so hard to do. I remember England were very lucky not to lose to Spain in that tournament.
    Robson did alright but the fact is that whenever England meet a good team in the knockout stages they always lose apart from when they are playing at home.

    • @SuperTed19021
      @SuperTed19021 4 роки тому +1

      Venables, in my opinion, was one of the most overhyped, overrated, failed England managers in history. We drew against a mediocre Switzerland side, beat a declining Scotland, yeah, we beat Holland 4-1, but I bet they had a massive fall out on the plane flying over, squeaked past a piss-poor Spain side on penalties and then got knocked out again on pennies to a one-man-band Bierhoff-led Germany side (who were also missing their best player in Klinsmann) and Venables *is* a hero????? For blowing our best chance in multiple generations of actually winning a tournament? When we was at home, never needing to qualify, had all what you could ask for in terms of players' youth/experience/coaching staff and plus there were no other standout teams? That *REALLY* was the one (Euro 96), but we blew it unforgivably. As for Robson, he actually *did* do okay. But then again, he did have a once in a life-time striker in Lineker, a budding midfield maestro in Gascoigne, and a squad who could go toe-to-toe with West Germany at Italia '90, regardless of lack of European competition football. It was the players themselves that begged Robson to change his play and formation starting with the Holland group stage game. Before that, fans and the media were *desperate* to see the back of him. And, like Russia 2018, they had a kind knockout draw.

Belgium had reached last 4 of 1986 and had Schifo at his peak and Cameroon were the quarter final trendsetters for Africa. Definitely the England team of 2018 had an easier knockout route not to mention their first round group was mediocre at best compared to the first round group at Italia 90 which was the best ever Ireland team, Euro champions Holland and Egypt.

    Well, they haven't won anything. There's a constant harkening back to 1966, which was so long ago that it's obsolete. England consistently does less well than Germany, despite the media telling everyone that they'll win. I think it's time to stop blaming managers and start players being England manager is almost as bad as being Chelsea manager!

    • @SuperTed19021

      When we: A: Give up 1966 (the media *certainly* needs to), the game has moved on yonks ago, B: accept Euro 96 was *actually* a disastrous failure, (not a heroic/glorious one), there was *actually then* no better time to deliver a title with the players, manager and environment we had but still blow it, C: acknowledge there are not enough English coaches (Iceland have more coaches than us despite had not even a slither of our population), D: stop promoting physic and speed over player intelligence at the age of 10, and E: stop over-hyping every youth player (I mean, stop making every 15 year old England breakout star think they have already *made* it) and also encourage more overseas play opportunities. Maybe *then* we will properly achieve again.

    England were out classed and the tatics were all wrong, 442 was never going to work, and players who were playing in the formation made it worse. barry was to slow and the back line was unorganised. need to get rid of the old and bring in some new talent, and a new manager as capello is awful. even when he changed to 433 after the world cup he was still doing hoof ball. england have a lot to learn but as ussuel we never do and alway fail because of it.

    I'm not sure what the players had to be scared of. The outfield players were more or less guaranteed their start, as the squad was so lacking in depth.
