LYRICS
People, wasting away in paradise
Going backward, once in a while
Moving ahead, falling behind
What do you believe, what do you believe
What do you believe is true
Nothing they say makes a difference this way
Nothing they say will do
Take all the trouble that you can afford
At least you won't have time to be bored
Oh the power and the passion, oh the temper of the time
Oh the power and the passion
Sometimes you've got to take the hardest line
Sun burnt faces around, with skin so brown
Smiling zinc cream and crowds, Sundays the beach never a cloud
Breathing eucalypti, pushing panel vans
Stuff and munch junk food
Laughing at the truth, 'cause Gough was tough till he hit the rough
Uncle Sam and John were quite enough
Too much of sunshine too much of sky
It's enough to make you want to cry
I see buildings, clothing the sky, in paradise
Sydney, nights are warm
Daytime telly, blue rinse dawn
Dad's so bad he lives in the pub, it's a underarms and football clubs
Flat chat, Pine Gap, in every home a Big Mac
And no one goes outback, that's that
You take what you get and get what you please
It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees
Oh the power

Rob Hurst is a criminally under-rated drummer
And a terrific singer to boot.
He is out of this world sensational!! And still hot too!!❤
And a songwriter!
The "Ghostwriters" 🙂
He IS Animal from the Muppets
Oils are strong supporters of human rights, environmental, first nations. They had a series and No 1 hits in the 1980s & 1990s. The singer Peter Garret, the singer, is a barrister and one time senator and minister in the Australian government. Oils are legends in Australian music.
yes, Batman
Garrett was never a lawyer let alone a barrister, frankly it's tiring hearing this often repeated 'fact'...pink bats were great though eh? Maybe the real world and the solutions it requires are marginally harder to implement than pissing and moaning about them in tunes..
@hdmccart6735 at least tried to do something, more than could be said of the backstabbing liberals.
It was a small wall section of a corrugated iron rainwater tank. Capturing water off the roof and storing it in a galvanized iron tank was an iconic part of many Australian backyards 50 years ago.
I was thinking part of a road culvert, probably what she crawled through. Or a basement window well. Played almost like a oversized washboard
@@jimwilcox2964 Stuart's right: it's an iron tank for storing water on this dryest of all continents (and that was so prior to our current catastrophic climate change!). "Iconic" is right - it's as Aussie a symbol as you can think of. And if you live outside major metropolitan areas or anywhere without water connected, you'll still have one. I live on the outskirts of Melbourne - we have a 110,000 litre one of these.
I still have one!
Still have three in our yard. It is our only water source. Haven't run out yet (touch wood).
We have 3. One for the auto drinkers for the stables in the barn two more off sheds. sheds with lumps for outdoor use. On the farms in SA it was our only water source.
Was out in the middle of the Western Australian outback surrounded by red dust and emu's when I saw a sign at the local pub saying 'Oil' Ain't Oil's playing live tonight'... went along for a beer and performing was Midnight Oil, to a crowd of about 50 people... which was most of the town! Both the crowd and band were lovin' it, here was a massive Aussie band playing their pub instead of a massive arena in the US...was a brilliant night. As they played under a false name we guessed it was off the books and possibly a last minute idea as they passed thru for whatever reason... but it's still talked about in the town to this day, haha!
2 reasons, firstly to show their appreciation to every fan, every where, most of the big bands did small towns in between the big cities, usually under a false name. Secondly, to test out new or controversial songs, to gauge the crowd reactions, if it was no good only 50 people knew about it. lol. or even like this one with the instrumentals to see if people get into it or not, a lot of sort of those things get developed and tested on the road.
Awesome story. They've done that many times, but cool ya got to see it
Rob is famous for his Drum solo in P&P using the iconic Aussie water tank found in remote parts of Australia for harvesting water
It's a fresh water tank used at farm houses usually much bigger
That was the older more tame version. When it was performed in their prime it was more energetic and almost violent. 🙂
You have no idea how much this song meant to us back in the 80's - hearing this come on down here in our summers got the place fired up EVERY time - Typical Aussie culture here
I was there about 70 metres from the stage and they were brilliant.
I was at that gig. Simply amazing. Guitarist/keyboards Jim Moginie had ripped his hamstring at a gig a few days earlier, and had to be wheeled onto the stage in a wheelchair here. There was doubt about whether it would happen, being towards the end of their reunion tour. At end of the gig, the rest of the band swarmed onto Jim and hugged him. So emotional. I cried unashamedly.
Rob Hurst ……. One of the greatest drummers in rock history………. He just never runs out of gas……… and what an amazing driving beat he sets up !!
I was at this concert and all I could talk about afterwards was the drummer Rob Hirst , hands down one of the best in the world . It was even more special as the concert was on Rememberance Day . It was an amazing night 🙏👊🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rob Hirst best drummer/percussionist - can play a beat on anything!
Aussie classic and a great live band.I saw them live in Newcastle only a few months ago, great memories
The best concert I ever went to my trip kicked in on the drum solo such an unforgettable night love from New Zealand
It's a water tank, used to hold drinking water, used to be very common in australia back in the day.
Rob Hirst on drums has a reputation as the hardest hitting drummer in Aussie rock. A lot of broken skins and sticks litter his career!
Cheers!
Heard the same about Mark Kingsmill.
That small water tank was found in the desert on Midnight Oil’s tour of the north of Australia’s indigenous communities with one of our great First Nations bands Warumpi Band. They have been touring with this tank for years and it actually has a bunch of quotations pickups taped to the inside to enhance the sound. Rob Hirst loves throwing his sticks into it which must be a nightmare for Clem his drum tech to retrieve every night.
Thank you for posting this! The Oils have always been my favourite band. I hope you react to many more of their songs. They are one of the best live acts period.
Rob Hearst is the drummer and main song writer of the Oils. He is an absolute master of the half beat, like Stuart Copeland of the Police. Very creative drummer.
Great performance, great drummin, great song. This is a really good live version of the song. Thanks for reacting.
Nice one. Loving the Aussie content 🇦🇺
I love how much fun you guys have on these reactions.
That looks like the horn section from Hunters and Collectors. The bald trumpet player is definitely in Hunters.
Rob hurst one great drummer I have all ways admired his drumming style
Australia’s finest 👈 seen them more times than I can remember, pub gigs to stadiums the best live performances I’ve EVER SEEN
Galvanised iron rain tank, very iconic in Australia
Peter Garrett is a forces of nature.
Rob Hirst is considered to be widely accepted to the the best drummer is Australia
And it is funny it is one of the few things you never hear an argument about. Rob Hirst, best drummer............next category lol
Steve Judd from Karnivool now. Check em out
@@glenchapman3899 Best bassist... Giffo
Yes a corrugated steel fresh water tank which collects rainwater from the roof. Also many Aussie houses have corrugated steel roofs
I still have the old "Galvo" rainwater tank in my backyard, it served for a while as a chicken shed.
Their album Head Injuries is brilliant
Great live band 🎸🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
The drummer plays like a drum machine, mostly (I mean that as a compliment.).
I have a one eyed chicken that walks around like peter Garret dancing, no Ike 🤭🤣
In Australia they are known as water tanks. I was at this concert lol, is was just incredible. Sung my lungs out!
MIDNIGHT OIL MAKES ME MOVE LIKE A MADMAN... LOVE THE OILS
LOVE!
Peter Garrett is a national treasure. This is when being original is just being yourself. Socially aware, culturally sensitive, Midnight Oil is globally recognized and his band is freaking awesome. One of the reasons I tune in to you is you are uniquely qualified for these reaction videos. Being on the inside of the music industry gives you insights to how things are done or based on your own experiences of what it takes to present your music to the world in a way that sets you apart from the others while still retaining your integrity to the music itself. Peter Garrett does this better than most and I think you have done a nice job of showing the beautiful experience of listening to and seeing a performance for the very first time. You have such joy in the musical experience knowing how much goes into the creation of new material.
It’s a rain water tank. We have lots of them in. Australia
Was there , mind wasn't, great concert
"It's better to to die on you feet than to live on you knees" - what a great line
First seen Rob playing the water tank back in the 80's at Festival Hall Melbourne...
It is a corrogated water tank very common in Australia!
Must listen to studio version !!!
Yeah, I’ve just been checking out a few of the videos they’ve done on Aussie bands and this is the third live oils song. The sound on this particular album is so good, though granted it doesn’t have the water tank in Rob’s solo.
@@beatsandskies3 After the drum roll he hits the snare 2x, on the 2nd hit a bottle breaks. I love that part of his solo.
Classic Australian song, GREAT TIMES IN AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 👍. Check out there early stuff.
Midnight oil was formed in 1976. The bass player ( Bones ) is the only non original member who joined in 1987. This concert was in 2022. The band members are now in their 60’s and 70’s. For 50 years this band has been the greatest live band of all time. I’ve been a fan since around 1980 and I love them just as much now than I had 40 years ago. I love you Guy’s as well. Rob Hirst is the reason I taught myself to play drums.
Who knew a rainwater tank could be an instrument, suppose rob did😁
Another Australian band is Hunters and Collectors. Songs like Head Above Water, We The People, or a slower one that was getting airplay when i was there in 93, True Tears of Joy.
For some reason you popped into my 'please watch ', so here I am binge watching 😅, and I'm hugely impressed 👏👏. Loving all the Aussie content. I am a woman of a certain age, and I lament the demise of our Aussie rock scene/bands, so sad😥, but at least we can watch it all here on the tube👍.Thank you to all the requesters👍. I've checked out your own music too, and as a metal lover eg The Hu, BLS, Ozzy, Metallica, you guys are excellent. Susie's voice is amazing 👌👏👏
It was a piece of corrugated iron... back in the day they used them in fences and water tanks and grooves of houses
Its a water tank, very common in Australia specially on farms
Rob Hurst is playing a small corrugated iron water tower which was used in Australia to collect rainwater.
its a corrugated iron water tank that you would find in the backyard of houses in Australia of the past or on a farm that he is drumming on
LOL - corrugated sheets for roofing - VERY popular here in Aus.
it was part of a water tank. It collects the rain from the roof of the adjacent house (or shed).
I have a DVD of this tour. Being a bass player, I was quite amazed how much better the bass is in this live show. It seems more prominent than in the studio version. As for the drumming, I once heard Midnight Oil described as a band to showcase Rob Hirst's drumming. But each member of this band carries their own weight. And the thing you are talking about is a sheet of corrugated iron. Very typical in out back Australia and many houses have corrugated tin roofs. Not recommended for areas where you have cyclones or tornadoes. I heard a story about the cyclone in Darwin in 1972 (I think). A man was running with his wife for shelter, he was holding her hand, when a sheet of corro was blown from a house, about his wife in half.
That was a water tank he was playing on
New to your channel and loving your reactions ❤ (Digressing) But damn girrrl, love your lipstick!!
Yeh like a mini corrugated steel rainwater tank. Common in Australia on farms and we have more residential versions too. Looks Aussie af. Not sure if it's super common everywhere else tho??
Peter Garret is the vocalist he’s a GOD!!!!!!!
Brilliant!!
Yep, definitely the drummer was using a water tank. They are still used today in country areas.
Rob Hirst is a powerhouse drummer, but let's not forget that he is also one of the Oils most important songwriters!
Peter Garrett was also Australia’s education minister as well as midnight oil lead singer
Best performance was Oils On The Water concert in 1985.
Remember watching that on the ABC back in 1985 while living in Queensland, had the gig shirt and had copy of the dvd and cd sent to me in uk a few years ago from my brother in Sydney 🇦🇺👍
@@STOKEOZ1967 I recorded it onto a cassette off the tv. The recording quality wasn't great but one of the greatest performances.
How lucky we were to get that on free to air tv.
@@erichoberg3502 definitely mate, it's one of my favourite performances, if I had been living in Sydney at that time I'd have tried my best to get tickets as listened to triple J at the time, but I left nsw at end of 83, but some great memories , my last oils gig was up in Manchester ,England, 2019, didnt think I'd get a another chance to see them live🇭🇲🎸☀️
@@STOKEOZ1967 That's it recorded it off Triple J.
Goat Island.............
Peter is a crazy (CRAZY!!) dancer and has been an influential activist for decades. He is a low-key gentleman in real life though. Been on a small (like 36 people) air-plane with him and unlike some others (eg sport stars) he is just so nice to regular people. Wish we could clone guys like him.
It’s a water tank, guys. Lots of homes have them... collects rainwater for use in the home (not drinking or cooking obviously). Important in times of Aussie drought!
*storm drain thing is called a rainwater tank!*
its a corrugated iron water tank he is using as a drum they where in many backyards in Australia of the past and on farms
Wow! Love it! Let’s stay in touch!
Rob Hirst is an insanely good drummer. Very underrated
You guys should really listen to the drum solo on the album version. They were working with a British producer called Nick Launay who had just worked with "The Models" and the Oils were sick of him talking about how inventive and creative they were in the studio. Launay identified power and the passion was gonna be "the song" but it needed something, so he just said to Rob Hirst, "this is your 20 seconds, just go crazy and hit everything".
Love how they chucked in a bit of surf guitar, dick dale would've loved it 😊
Was that the Hunters & Collectors horn section playing with the Oils?
Oh and do more Hunters & Collectors
The United States has fantastic dentists. Clearly.
Also good clip and reaction
Drummer was playing on a Corrugated water tank. Check U.S. Forces,by midnight oil.
Yes Corrugated Iron Water tanks are commonplace in many farms and rural areas of Australia
It's a water tank. I have a very large one on my farm. I think this is a song about lazy days, oblivious to what is going on in the world and letting the world move on past you without your attention and contribution
In the original Music video I think Rob Hirst (Drummer )is playing a fire extinguisher or gas cylinder .Bones Hillman (Bass Player ) passed away a few years ago.
Its an outback water tank guys😁
Nice ❤️☺️🥰
Rainwater tank, all homes have them in Aus
Yeah and I've got a Kangaroo in my bathroom and a Goanna in my wardrobe.
The band reformed and toured after Peter Garret retired from politics , he was our Minister for the Environment
Listen new song Rising Seas is amazing song!
drummer Rob Hirst is using an old water tanker from aussie homesteads
Rain water tank !
What type of drummer plays a weathered old rainwater tank......An Aussie One !
Lol, Zany Suzie!!!
It’s funny to reconcile the two sides of Peter Garret, the unique passion of his performance in Midnight Oil and the ten or more years he spent in politics. First elected to the House Of Representitives then a shadow minister until Labor won office and he was Minister for the Environment and Education, sitting there in Parliament contained in a black suit. Now back full circle playing in Midnight Oil again.
He needs to stick to singing as he made a mess of the home insulation industry that is still felt today.
And he was singularly responsible for Labor losing office. He shouldn't have sold out, and stuck with the Nuclear Disarmament Party.
The Drummer 💯 its a water tank. 💧
Rob Hirst is probably the best drummer in Australia.
You guys need too review a
Sydney band called "Wolf Mother" the jocker and the thief .with kick ass
check out "US Forces" and "Hercules" from the oils.
While you're doing Australian stuff, have a listen to Wolfmother 'joker and the thief', enjoy 😉
This would be 2018 as I remember printing the Stop Adani tee shirts.
2017 :-)
It's a water tank guys.
People always mention the obvious great rock drummer's like John Bonham and Ian paice you can definitely put rob hirst among those guys as one of the greats
It's a water tank, trust me !!!
It is a corrugated iron water tank
corrugated iron storm water rain tank
Culvert! 😂
