Wonderful discussion, I wholeheartedly agree with your choices. I eagerly purchased Goldingay on Genesis, but it is not as good as the choices you gave. I use David Guzik’s Enduring Word commentary with my devotions, and I found his notes on Genesis to be very helpful and insightful. Bill Arnold on Genesis (a former Hebrew professor of mine) has a good commentary on Genesis. R. Kent Hughes is very good also. But the ones you mentioned really are top tier!
Actually, i find WBC to have a good format, because it "forces" the authors to explain a passage in various ways. Some commentators in other series didn't even comment on the format of the passages. Also the "explanation" serves very well in the end, after the exegesis, because it let you confront your conclusions with author's conclusions.
Sorry, when I knock the format I am thinking of the layout - the visuals - like you I love the thinking behind it, I just think they could do so much more with making that layout accessible. Having said that I really like what they have done with the new Thessalonians volume - that rings my bell!! Bless you!
Definitely, the Thessalonians volume will be an outstanding commentary. I recently got it and I'm very impressed by the quality of the exegesis. WBC tends to be my favorite series because it blends well theological reflection with clear exegesis. Thank you, pastor, I'm glad that whenever I have a question I can count on you!
Amazing! This is the advantage of living in the USA. In the UK there are almost no Christian book shops left and the second hand market is confined to ebay and amazon marketplace
One of my favorite formats.
"ceremoniously offered as a living sacrifice" 🤣
Thank you, Pastor🌹🌹🌹🌹
So timely for this. Thank you!
Many thanks for bringing this!
Really enjoyed this, thank you. Great to hear so many recommendations and what you suggest as pre reading.
Thanks for this Stephen. No surprises in your list! It is also worth consulting John Goldingay in the Baker series and Bruce Waltke's commentary.
Forgot about Waltke, that is a really good one. Goldingay, so far, I don’t think it is as good as the ones mentioned in this video.

I just picked up NIV genesis for $8 from a second hand book store
