How Opeth managed to sound so heavy (mostly) with E standard tunings still baffles me.
You ever hear Sylosis? Everything except their newest album is in standard and they're heavy as shit, I recommend Empyreal if you haven't heard it
Many songs are in drop D, some in DADFAD tuning (Ghost of Perdition for example)
Amazing chord development. It’s heavy because it inspires a natural feeling without the need for gimmicky stuff like thick distortion and hard mutes/drops to make something sound heavy

Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of the most underrated guitarists in metal in my opinion

The most important thing in epicness of Opeth is that they REALLY have their own style of riffing which for the metal genre is quite rare.
Perfect mix of Black/Death/Doom and Prog elements
@Sanguine korvus can you give some examples close to the riffs of Opeth? BC I want more songs of their style but I struggle with finding any :)
same thing with lamb of god and early decapitated, there are probably other examples but these two popped in my mind when I read your comment

@Sanguine korvus yes, it is rare, they bred a shitton of copycat bands over the years, and just because every Prog-Death band sounds like Opeth or Death it doesn't take from the fact that both those bands have very characteristic sounds.

@@muratiren3257 "hz" at the start of a name is used for prophets in the Turkish Language. And Muhammed is the prophet of Islam so I did a wordplay in there pointing out Suiçmez's heavenly talent on guitar.
Opeth's riff is not that hard to play (at least compared to other prog bands).
BUT what makes it special? The composition! Mikael is a riff machine, makes simple yet memorable riffs, perfect for intermediate guitarists going to more advanced guitarists. A perfect band for exercising your skills in riff composing and song writing. I believe that's what makes them really special.
I remember Åkerfeldt saying The Moor was the hardest (at least for him). I don't remember where exactly, but I would have to agree with him. Still Life as a whole is probably their most technical album. There are definitely hints of that technical riffage on the other albums, but they don't go full out on any of the other records.
I'd imagine playing the serenity painted death riff while singing would be extremely difficult
that riff that starts when the growls come in is a bitch, I'm a guitarist and i struggle with it though i kind of learned to play it time ago
I remember Mikael saying in an interview how he wrote Still Life almost entirely in a guitar program (assuming guitar pro), so it just came out as a bunch of technical Morbid Angel riffs

Pretty much the entirety of The Leper Affinity is among the hardest Opeth songs to play. Lot of crazy and fast chord changes, lots of chromatic spider licks, fast, lots of riffs.

What a cool guy, my favourite band for so many years. I'd rate The Moor the hardest but not necessarily strictly rhythm guitar (even though I don't consider it lead guitar for some reason). Because of that one pattern between verses around 5 minutes, so hard to nail the lick using pinky and going down the strings. Despite being a very normal pattern. Or Wreath intro, the jumps between chords are tough to be rhythmically accurate. Or By the Pain I see in the Others verse, that riff is like a nail gun.

Just wanted to say that quite apart from the fact that you learned all these songs and played them perfectly, it's pretty amazing that you manage to pull them all into a medley that works and is enjoyable to listen to. Since I noticed it, it's often the part that impresses me the most about these videos. Most would have it be a jerky mess but you actually make something that's enjoyable to listen to, even for someone like me who's never listened to Opeth (or any of the others). Kudos to you.

I was never an Opeth fan, nor did I take the time to listen to their music. But the riffs with your tasty tight rhythm playing has completely turned me and now I'm listening to these albums on repeat, as well as learning the riffs!
