Hey two videos today! So Sin has launched, and while he's mostly straightforward the thing is the Food Buffs. Before launch, they didn't explain it, and here we are at launch and... they don't explain it. So I banged my head against the wall for a while figuring out what exactly does what, and now let me tell you how it all works in this fine video which you can like and subscribe and all that stuff. Honestly its probably gonna wind up being a minor gimmick mechanic but who knows, could be that Evo 2023 is won by Sin Fish speed combos.
Roof is this as great or as bad a trait as wonder woman or enchantress in injustice 2? If you remember they both had a trait that gave various buffs or debuffs but it was completely random and you couldn't control it playing them . Hell with enchantress your opponent didn't know either . It was silly smh 😔
There's a twitter post going around that's quantified all the numbers. it seems that when you get a stronger effect for meat, lobster, and fish you also get an increase in the time they last, going between 2 and 6 seconds.
I kinda wish the food could recover some stamina, kinda reward his combo plays if he takes a second to refill it. Similar to how chaos will reload bullets.
Now that ive gotten a hang of his set play im starting to get a hang of the eating. Now I try to make sure im always buffed so I eat after every combo. I also use it to bait the opponent into thinking im open so they always jump in and attack. Then I just cancel it into a D.P And once they respect it I eat as much as I can so I have all buffs. The top speed and tension buffs can really be game changers.
Thats basically what this is, a taunt with a subtle reward attached. But it's a good idea to frame it that, you could even extend that to all characters
Well… I’m glad I was kinda right. I called: “a damage buff either on par with positive bonus or less. A defense buff on par with positive bonus or less. A tension meter filling one.” But 5 effects that can roll on random ranges of how strong they actually are… geez. I honestly kinda wonder why they bothered to give him this ability at all honestly. They felt okay dramatically changing some other characters (Elphelt has to manually reload her bullets and she keeps calling herself “Happy Chaos” now), BUT SIN STILL GOTTA EAT THO.
So this is a video just to give you a day 1 taste of how Sin works, gonna get some rest and then start working on the Combo Guide. HOPEFULLY, live tomorrow, but if not tomorrow than the next day. After that the usual big Tips and Tricks guide you come to expect, that will be either end of this weekend or very early next week. Bridget was like, 3? months ago, so its been a hot minute since we had some new GG strive characters to work with!
I really, really hope they buff this... well, his buffs, to either make the moderate buffs way more consistent, or make the randomness vary even more, so he can get like a third of his health back or twice the speed, etc. Maybe not that extreme, but enough to where it actually matters to even have the move anymore.
Finally! Tired of them being all coy about it Yeah, they're probably gonna need to buff this. I'm not seeing too many people wasting time to eat mid match when it doesn't fill your stamina and the boosts they do give could be negligible.
A lizard heal at the end of an easy f.S>6H could definitely add up and make a difference, especially since he plays around the midscreen where poking with a life lead is an essential part of gameplay.
The eat seriously needs a buff it was such a dope mechanic in xrd but now its practically useless they either need to buff the buffs it give currently significantly or make is so it restores his meter or increases the speed he regains it
I'm not one that usually gets on Strive's ass for simplifying things, as usually it means things are just more streamlined or changed around to fit the game's more grounded playstyle, even though a bit of nuanced might be lost, but this seems significantly too far for the simplification. At least Baiken got a regular counter to maintain aspects of her defensive playstyle in place of what she had before (as well as the tether mechanic) but eating food doesn't seem to be important to Sin at all this time around. The move is still there, but they've deleted its functionality. Taking that away and giving him passive stamina regen just makes him more like Nago, which they clearly wanted to differentiate Sin from by changing his special-to-special cancels into canned follow-ups and making the initial special moves cost nothing (which I'm fine with), so I see this as a clear failure of design on the part of Arcsys.
Except that Nago's blood gauge goes down pretty slowly on its own, and requires you to use sword normals or command grab or super in order to bring it back down. Sin's meter just requires you to wait and not use special follow-ups for a bit. There's so little decision making required in managing Sin's meter in this game. Far less than with Nago.
I don’t think the problems is that they *simplified* it, rather the opposite. They complicated it with no real benefit. Still growing in Xrd had one goal and one goal only that was to fill his calories gauge to a fix Point which was a great drawback from making Sin too strong and oppressive. Here, they got him numerous of food, that does different things from little to ACTUALLY no benefit. They turned Still growing into a RNG fest and the worst part about it is that it can fit in his normal game plan. Sin want to play to get in your face after a knockdown or put you in a situation was it hard to punish him, which is shown by his Gazelle step and his air buttons. It doesn’t help that he can’t use this on someone while they’re knockdown near him, so they want you to use it fullscreen probably. either way, Arc basically telling you if you have to go out of your way to make it work
@@onehitwonders7729 I think, even though the mechanic has more variables, its simplified in practice, because you're barely ever going to use it, at least when compared to the Xrd version. Your overall gameplan is simplified, even if the mechanic itself is more complicated if you're actually trying to make good use of it.
I'm surprised that there is not a buff that restores a part of his stamina meter. I understand that this would be closer to his Xrd game plan but you think that they would consider it at least. Ngl I was expecting more from the buffs.
Make it cycle, or have to run through all 5 before getting the same one again, and always provide it with the highest stat and it'll literally still be underpowered lmao This is just a yummy taunt
The move seems about as useful as the coy explanation lol. I think this might affect 1 round out of every 500? Really liking the character though otherwise. Simple enough but there's a ton to master
I wish you could use the food as a followup to his specials and for it to still recover stamina. The buffs on their own don't seem strong enough to be worth it but also since they're random, I wouldn't want them being stronger on their own either.
Yeah, this is basically a joke tier reference move. It's like they planned for it to work the same way as Xrd, finished the animation, then changed their mind and didn't want to throw it away lmao
@@Ramsey276one I'd rather it not be in the game at all when the only purpose it serves is referencing a mechanic that doesn't exist anymore lol "hey guys, remember how Sin used to have an eating mechanic?"
I was just asking myself what does the food do after trying him for a bit, and just as I opened UA-cam there thus Video was on my homepage. Great timing.
Two layers of randomness = unused mechanic. They should either let him select what he eats and keep random effectiveness (or maybe the more you hold the button the better it becomes?) or keep what procs random but always have the same effectiveness. They should also indicate which buff is active on the character (slightly glowing aura maybe?). Personally I'd take both: same motion but different buttons to select a meal as well as holding it to increase effect strength or duration. As it stands right now this mechanic feels undercooked (hur huurrr)
I think everybody was planning to go into the lab on food thanks to their incredibly detailed description, but I didn't get a chance with Thanksgiving stuff going on. Thanks for putting in the leg work for everybody Roof.
Strange... They had training room options for RNG procs like Faust's What Could It Be why not have one for this proc too? Edit: are you sure the buff intensity is random, cuz it might be tied to timing when you release the button? (since some of his specials have this mechanic)
I mean, to be fair. Faust is the RNG King! But…think about it this way…Faust needs specific items to pop out to do some of the deadliest combos in the game! But some of his RNGs can definitely be used against him…with Sin…at least they didn’t make it mandatory to eat and gave him something else…yea you lose Oki, but it’s an interesting concept. And nope there’s no way to get a specific buff…it’s 100% completely random just like Faust
I always felt sol’s scaling didn’t feel that accurate because Ky was taller than him but Sin makes this very apparent lol. Isn’t he suppose to be 6ft?? This is very similar to the RYU situation in sfv (Like sakura was taller than him lol).
It’s obvious to me at least that they didn’t want this character to be too busted out the gate, maybe in the future they’ll start giving more utility to this once he finds his place in the meta
I like the idea of random buffs, but it's stupid to have varying levels. If they wanted to balance it, make it so that he can only get one of each per round at the highest level of each. Then he has a real option of either setting up oki or buffing himself when knocking down opponents. The way the move is right now... why even bother?

basically they brought back the food eating from xrd but its no longer tied to his core gameplay mechanic anymore now we have the flag stamina gauge that depletes with the follow-ups
I agree most of the bonuses are just a novelty, but HP and meter for free aren't bad, especially HP. That could come into play in a match for sure. If it was HP all the time it would be downright OP in my opinion.
thx a lot for this guide, ngl i would've expected the fish buff to restore a bit of the flag meter, or burst meter, speed doesn't seem that important for Sin tbh
They honestly should just cut it down a bit. Maybe 2-3 possibel strengths for each buff. I honestly say just have it be the max strength for every buff and just keep the rng. I'd even go as far as to say they should do the "tetris" effect like SFV Rose, and just show you what food is next so you can plan around it.
I wish SFV added more RNG besides Oro and his Tengu Stones, I have at least 4 great examples of such RNG usages: - Cody's VT1: regular knife, combat knife, tanto VT2: the pipe, barbedwire bat, crowbar different speeds and power - Abigail's VS2: normal tire, monster truck tire, stonewheel - Menat's VT1 and VT2 and Rose's VS2: just like the tengu stones, have a small % to have a different orb with glowing a different colour with other ailments (burn, freeze, stun, poison)
After a quick training session I feel like people will want to eat a lot looking for tension because this boy has so many paths to good Roman Cancels. His overdrives felt hard to combo into, tho, at least from a fuller combo that has one of his specials in. I'm guessing it'll mostly either be from a wall slump or maybe Tyrant Barrel in the corner to try and combo from the bounce (though I didn't test to see if he recovers fast enough)
@@egebamyasi2929 Yeah, but I don't think the two are very comparable. Food seems to be quite safe, it's part of your oki flow. They get blasted out or knocked down, you eat. You're always getting a something and Sin is good at closing distances again so I think this will be very safely spammable. With Faust the difference is that it's an offensive option and some of the other options are quite dangerous as well. Plus, tossing items feels way more core to his gameplan. We'll see how it goes, this may get buffed in the future (at least patch the bloody description, lol) I think, but because of the randomness, it'll be tricky
I think the food is totally not worth giving up an oki chance. You would argue the health bonus is great, but all the rest of the buffs feel like a "Try again next time to get health. Te he~". Kinda wish the different reward the food would give you force a certain type of play. Like, idk, counter hit property on your next special (1 time use) like Xrd Slayer's Succ
I’m seeing this as a good sign. I could be wrong, but maybe they didn’t want it to be that good since Sin is already strong without it. As opposed to him being mediocre and needing the buff to be strong.
You'd think today's games would just on a basis included information like this. For crap’s sake, frame data is a standard thing to know now. Thankfully, we have guys like you that will go out of their way to figure it out so the rest of us can quickly learn.
The eating mechanic should've just worked like Happy Chao's concentration meter or like older games cause this is something you are never gonna see in an actual fight like at all also the fact that it's random and may or may not be beneficial and the outcome is so small makes this move completely worthless just have it increase the regeneration of your stamina meter since that's sin's main gimmick or have it give you 1 stamina bar after eating why can happy chaos have that mechanic in the game already but give sin this oddly RNG eating mechanic
I wish it was possible to choose what to eat by pressing different buttons. I don’t know how they would balance it though. Or maybe have made it so he can eat while moving. It’s not that long of a move but still, for Oki and combos, there’s not really any reason to sue it in a real match. Or maybe make it so it rotates between the 5. It always has the same order, but what does is incentives you to use it often as you know you’ll be getting next, with the doing all of them being the last one.
My guess for why the giant nerf from Xrd is that this was supposed to be meant for his meters (health, stamina, RISC, Burst,Tension), they figured it was too strong too late and nerf the shit out of them. The moveset has been reduced so a lot of these should be strong utility and purpose, this is one of the bad ones that I feel they did.
I'm glad you did this one, because honestly...he's damn near interesting enough to buy, but I'm pretty much waiting on the last two to see whether I buy the pass... Flag-boi looks fun, but I admit to primarily being a waifu-fighter by trade XD
"Something good happens when he eats"? Really!??? It is not user friendly at all. You have to check videos on UA-cam to know what's the properties of every food. It is not cool for beginners. Thank you rooflemonger for the explainations.

Seems like a waste of dev time tbh, if they were that desperate to include food in his gameplan they could have done it in any number of ways, this just is just undercooked.
this looks like a load of silly garbage to phase out Sin's need to food, and honestly let's be thankful for it. - Menat's VT1 and VT2 and Rose's VS2: just like the tengu stones, have a small % to have a different orb with glowing a different colour with other ailments (burn, freeze, stun, poison)
STONE WHEEL???
@@Ramsey276one Yes, go watch The Flinstones lol
Compared to xrd where making space and windows to eat was a huge part of his character, this is laughably weak and very disappointing.
This move is not worth giving up pressure
After a quick training session I feel like people will want to eat a lot looking for tension because this boy has so many paths to good Roman Cancels. His overdrives felt hard to combo into, tho, at least from a fuller combo that has one of his specials in. I'm guessing it'll mostly either be from a wall slump or maybe Tyrant Barrel in the corner to try and combo from the bounce (though I didn't test to see if he recovers fast enough)
I also had a feeling that max tension is the only real worthwhile dice roll. But compared to Faust meteor it's rather tame.
His overdrives are pretty nice to combo into imo can Kara from any special (apart from food) if you got a stamina!
@@nh2565 I didn't try karas during my one brief session, though it did cross my mind. THAT could be indeed scary
I highly doubt this move will be part of his gameplan. It's not worth giving up okizeme for.
Ugh hopefully this move gets a lil buff I kinda like playing the dice roll game but I want it to be worth something at least kinda like faust
Called DANGO ice cream ..
I am just very happy of not having another Nago in the game
You'd think today's games would just on a basis included information like this. For crap’s sake, frame data is a standard thing to know now. Thankfully, we have guys like you that will go out of their way to figure it out so the rest of us can quickly learn.
Does it stack? Actually no the time limit would prevent that
They should’ve just made each buff be a set amount instead of being random. Like 10% across the board would’ve been fine.
anyone know if the stat buffs stack? im very new to gg and am loving sin
Do they stack tho 🤔
TL:DW: good things happen
why would player sacrifice the oki chance for this trivial boost
The eating mechanic should've just worked like Happy Chao's concentration meter or like older games cause this is something you are never gonna see in an actual fight like at all also the fact that it's random and may or may not be beneficial and the outcome is so small makes this move completely worthless just have it increase the regeneration of your stamina meter since that's sin's main gimmick or have it give you 1 stamina bar after eating why can happy chaos have that mechanic in the game already but give sin this oddly RNG eating mechanic
Comment for algorithm, thanks for making this video.
While I have no intentions of playing Sin. I sincerely appreciate you for breaking this information down for us
HES FUCKING THAT SHIT UP!! EAT EAT EAT!!
Time stamps?
New caterer by next patch?
XD
I have trouble believing that the buff is truly "random".
There must be a way to trigger a particular buff or percentage of buff.
What’s so hard to believe about it? RNG is a thing in fighting games, for better or worse.
its truly random, try it for yourself if you doubt it
I'm glad you did this one, because honestly...he's damn near interesting enough to buy, but I'm pretty much waiting on the last two to see whether I buy the pass...
Your voice reminds me of the Dark souls carving stones
i dont know what that means
@@rooflemonger they're items that you can throw and they speak, simple messages like "Hello" or "Very good!" but it's a deep voice that sounds like the start of this video
This is one hell of a way to balance out his food buffs.
Better than Day 1 broken?
@@Ramsey276one Obviously if the benefits weren’t randomized and would always guarantee mad stat buffs it would make him nuts.
Seems like they included it out of some sorta feeling of obligation, its so minor and difficult to even tell whats happened - why bother? Seems like a waste of dev time tbh, if they were that desperate to include food in his gameplan they could have done it in any number of ways, this just is just undercooked.
UMAI!!
this looks like a load of silly garbage to phase out Sin's need to food, and honestly let's be thankful for it. No one likes being subjected to the whims if fate so the fact that the buffs are so inconsequential and your so unlikely to get anything you want when you want it... is honestly somewhat comforting. I don't want my boy to be the new villain of this game.
Man, these food buffs do *not* seem worth the risk.
ik arcsys aint fr bro💀
