    Wow, impressive work. You remind me very much of my dad, who passed away in 1973. He to was a Jack of all trades. I can remember him pulling the engine on our old 48 International Farm Truck, tearing it down, rebuilding it with new pistons and sleeves grinding the valves replacing the bearings rebuilding the carburetor and such, putting it all back together and dropping it back in the truck. The truck ran like a new one when he was done. Then a few weeks later, our old battery pack tube Farm Radio began to fail, so he tore it down, replaced a few tubes and replaced a capacitor with one from an old radio that was laying in the storage shed that his dad had kept when it died. Again, the old radio came back to life and we were again enjoying Suspense and The Lone Ranger at night. He could fix most anything, and if there were no parts, he would build them. He had an old hand crank forge that he built out of the wheel off some bygone truck back in the tree patch, he would have me crank the air blaster while he heated the iron to hammer out the new bracket for the Windmill that we used to get water from the deep well on the farm, then he would climb that rickety old tower and fix the thing so once again, we could water the cattle in the old wooden stock tank that he kept in good repair. So I guess, he was the typical farmer of the 50's, he had a high school education, which back then meant something, the school board offered him a job teaching grades 1-8 at the local one room school house, but he turned them down, said it would interfere with his farming. He did, however run for and was elected to the School Board and County Commission back then. I have tried to be like him, I hold a degree in Gun Smithing, also a degree from the University of North Dakota in Legal Assistant (paralegal) and worked most of my life as a police officer and 8 years as a Soldier in the US Army, including a year in Vietnam where I became quite close friends with a couple of folks from down under who I met at the South East Asia Signal School, where we learned the installation and maintenance of the dial phones. Most of us were trained on the simple hand crank field phones before shipping over. Oh I think you must have read my mind about that black paint, I thought from the beginning that it would look best with that trim in black. What could have added was perhaps some gold colored wire trim filling the seams where the black and brown wood meet, now that would be great, even a chrome wire would look good to set off the color difference and sort of blend them into one piece of wonderful radio.

      Your dad sounds wonderful and you had to be resourceful back then, particularly living on a farm. You also had a full life for gunsmithing to paralegal to policeman to soldier. I hope those Aussies didn't lead you astray. Thank you for your story Jerry, it was most interesting, cheers 😀

    Coming along nicely David. I would probably try just using a PVA glue on the paper speaker cone to repair those cuts. Not for bigger open holes of course but it will just give a smoother neater finish and should adhere the two sides of the cut sufficiently. Just a thought.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  4 роки тому

      Hi Graham, thank you. Yes, PVA would have worked well. My glue has gone off, it should brush on like PVA. I use that because it stays flexible but that isn't so important in that area of the speaker. Thanks Graham 😃

    You look like you used to work in the machining trade by the way you were lapping that speaker spacer on the sandpaper in that figure 8 motion. I used to lap parts like that in the shop I worked in. I was a tool and die maker/Cnc programmer for 25 years. I can spot a former machinist or at least a good hobbyist. Nice work as usual.

      @@DavidTipton101 Yes, the work hardening on it is terrible. I usually used tools with geometry geared more for aluminum worked the best on titanium. Anything blunt that was good on hard steel was not good on titanium. The hardest piece I ever had to program and fixture on a CNC lathe was for and F4 Phantom nose cone. Elaborate in shape and very thin titanium.

    Another nice job David. A little tip on the braided sleeve. In commercial use we add two or three inches extra length on each end (9 cm ) and then fold the ends inside the sleeve. with a little practice this ends up with a perfectly finished end that will not unravel. Will probably take you a time or two to get the feel for it. But when finished it will be worth the work.

Glad you rethought the paint job on the speaker - it would definitely not have been up to your standard to leave it the way it looked after your first rust/paint job. Liked the tricks on the "stencils" on the back of the chassis - must have been much easier than handling transfers. @@DavidTipton101 I don't think that I have seen a 5Z4G, but that doesn't mean that one wasn't made. The pinout of a 5Z4 is the same as the 5Y3, aside from the indirectly heated cathode, but the cathode is connected to one side of the filament anyhow so the potential is the same. If anything the 5Y3 is a better tube in that it can handle more output current.

    Hi David
    Im just curious, what is the Price you have to pay in copyright,if you play a song for too Long, and what is too Long 🙂 ? Have a nice day

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi Grassy. For a standard copyright breach any money the video earns is given to the copyright holder or holders. So I make nothing which isn't much anyway. The longest playing time is about 6 seconds before it gets a copyright hit. There is no penalty as such, you just lose the income. I think you can breach copyright to the extent the video is taken down or you get your channel taken down. I haven't been there so I don't know the details. I upload my videos for a number of days to make sure it doesn't get a hit before releasing them. I have had videos that were released over two years ago getting hits, I have successfully challenged those hits.

    you could repair paper speaker cones with some bits of tissue paper and some pva glue - no need for major surgery just a bit of paper mache . That was a while back - I expect you know better by now...?

    Hi again Dave. I've seen many times how you've had to perform surgery on speakers and it's quite an art, you have mastered it very well. My question is after a few years do they remain intact? Does the cone ever start to separate from the new surround it is glued to, or any other problem develop?

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Daniel, thank you. The foam surrounds eventually disintegrate to dust and will need to be replaced, the amount of time depends on the conditions it's kept in. I still have speakers I did 3 years ago that show no sign of this happening yet but I would expect a minimum of 10 years if kept inside. The glue won't fail though 👍🙂

    Great video Dave!!! Radio sounds great....when you touch up the speaker with paint....I said to myself....Dave will never leave it like that! Lol.....How many times on my videos...I warn myself not to ram my fingers thru the speaker....once poked a hole with a meter probe on camera....yikes!!! Things happen...and people need to see really how repairs/restores goes in real life!!! Not the mistakes...but how you recover! Speaker repairs (major) scares me a bit!!! I guess ai need to recone a few more and get comfortable....one trick I use on patches is take a coffee filter....tear an irregular piece to cover the tear...use my fingers and pull the edges of the filter a bit to get microfibers of the filter to fray.....when I glue it, those tiny fibers reach away from the edges and reinforces the bond......Im curious of the gold looking glue you used? I like to try everyone's techniques....some products are more suited for certain jobs! Thanks for sharing your video and experience! Take Care--Larry

    Sorry David, I am having problems on how to do the Alignment, I am not shore where to attach the signal generator and Meter, I know you are busy but do you think at sometime you could make a short video on this procedure, using a schematic as well as the equipment..

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Melissa, I did explain it on earlier videos but can't remember which. For the generator to antenna I connect the generator ground to the radio chassis and the signal wire I either lay it over the top of a short antenna wire connected to the radio or form two coils with both wires to induce a signal, failing that I connect the signal wire directly to the radio antenna, whichever works. You can put a 200pF cap in the signal line if you want. The tuning condenser should be fully meshed or you can connect the sig Generator in series with a 0.1 uF to the grid of the mixer valve bypassing the tuning condenser. The meter can be attached to the speaker terminals and set to AC volts. I connect the meter to the output valve plate in series with a 0.1 capacitor and set it to AC Volts, that means I don't have to have the speaker so loud. There is a bit of DC voltage on the plate so be careful. I'll see if I can do a video in the near future.
