  • FFMPEG comes with Linux as a terminal based application and video converter. But there is an easy way to convert sound and video files to other formats. I show you how with MystiQ. You can also use QWinFF.

      Yeah on Linux one thing is you have to have a password. Though most people get round that by setting up a short password that they will never forget. It seems to work well. I never had any password on my user account when I was on Windows. But you know what Windows is like now with Windows 10 and 11. So was glad to get away from Windows. The password thing is a small price to pay for having a really good operating system which Linux is. Where you don't have all of the problems you have on Windows. Windows 10 and 11 are not the same as Windows 7. It's getting worse now because Microsoft are now blocking third party software that brings back the Windows 7 menu in the Windows 11 Update 24H2. So I think we will be seeing more Windows users leaving and coming over to Linux. It's hard to believe that they would do this but it is happening. I found out from here and from some posts on the web. This users explains it well: ua-cam.com/video/klzZrW8BQUE/v-deo.html

    I do customer service in my day job. I do a lot of handholding for older folks who don't know how to use really basic computer things. It's actually very humbling, but every now and then I talk to someone who is 80 or 90 and has a very good grasp on tech. A former colleague of mine, who was elderly, but an ethical hacker, taught me it wasn't age or the fact that folks didn't grow up at the right time to learn; it's that many older folks weren't as open to the changing landscape. I am always happy to see older folks who enjoy noodling around with tech. It gives me hope, as someone who has always aspired to grow old and not be closed off to new experiences. I may stick around to see more. Cheers 🥂

    • @Agret
      @Agret 2 місяці тому +6

      You are correct about them not adapting to a changing landscape. I do tech support and deal with a lot of elderly customers, many of them both male & female tell me they used to work on the huge mainframe computers and were quite the computer wizards back in the AT days. I guess once you retire and don't really have to do anything technical on the computer it's easy to fall behind by 20yrs.

      I just ordered 50 of these for a school, they run okay for basic desktop stuff. The SSD on them does a lot of the heavy lifting, if they had a mechanical drive they would be hell but they actually run pretty snappy on Windows 11. You'd be surprised how well Windows does with lower specs as long as there is an SSD. I upgrade 1-2 computers a week with 500gb SSDs in place of their mechanical drives and they are often 6-10yr old machines and they run good as new with the upgrade.

    This was great. One consideration for people: Be careful about converting lossy compression formats (ie: mp3, ogg, jpg), to another lossy format, as each time you re-encode the file with a lossy codec, it degrades the quality. A single convert may be passable, but especially be careful about doing this numerous times.

    • @robertjenkins6132
      @robertjenkins6132 2 місяці тому

      When doing editing I try to do everything with one long ffmpeg command using --filter-complex (or whatever it's called) to chain together a bunch of filters (encoding only at the very end) or, if that is not possible or practicable, I use some kind of lossless codec for the intermediate steps (but it uses a lot of disk space). As I understand, GUI editing software such as Adobe does not encode anything until you click the Export button or some such. ffmpeg is hard for complex editing. Long command with --filter-complex are confusing a.f. and it sometimes gives unexpected results. I guess it's probably better to use it more for conversion than editing. I have also considered using something called AviSynth for text/script-based editing of videos, but so far I've never tried it.
