Excellent tutorial. The tip about how to use mapshaper I would never have figured out. Thanks to this video I have a shape map and the UK ONS data on built up areas (BUAs) working.
Fab tutorial. Being a new user of Power BI having used Tableau for many years this has sorted my issue around thematic mapping in Power BI which seemed to be not possible unless you were using standard geos.
This is a useful video, but it really highlights the limitations of Power BI mapping functionality. I have a simple .geojson file containing 2 polygons in WGS84 projection, with 2 dummy fields: a 'name' field and a 'number' field. You'd think you could load that directly into Power BI shape map visual without needing to convert to TopoJson, but you can't, no matter which visual you use. Even after converting using mapshaper, the json schema seems to remove the name and number field. I can see the 2 basic shapes on the Shape visual, but the info contained within the original geojson isn't available.
Hi there - great video - wonderful to see something UK based for a change - really clear, really simple and all works fine - my one question - having done a map I am unable to copy it anywhere - have looked on the PBI site - no help just says copy paste - any ideas/experience of this problem i.e. great to have the map and much easier than QGIS et al but I need to copy it elsewhere.
Hi Peter, what to do want to copy - from where to where. e.g. a visual for one pahge to another page in Power BI Desktop, or create a PNG image of a visual on the Service? - Mark
This is super super helpful. One issue I have though is that my report provides a range of data at constituency level by filtering individual parliamentary constituencies which are often very small. Therefore, if the map displays as a national level, you can't see the constituency, and if you zoom to the constituency, there is no geographical context. Is there some way to filter data relating to an individual constituency, but display the map at perhaps region level with possibly all regional constituency data?
Is it possible to plot filled shape map at the UK postcode level? When I use postcode data in Power BI it can be plotted as point correctly if I use the Map visual. But if I use the Filled Map or Shape Map visuals the postcode cannot be recognised.
Hi Silvia, I've put it there now in the 'Creating Shape Maps In Power BI' folder. Thanks for letting me know. - Hope your mapping is going well. FYI, the original source files are at commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8749/ - Mark
When I try to use the Mapbox visual now, it tells me that it is soon to be discontinued. Ant idea when this will take effect? And what in your opinion is the best alternative that has all the same choropleth functionalities?
@@LondonBusinessAnalyticsGroup I since identified that this is due to a different version of Power BI - it worked in the version with the yellow PBI logo (not the black logo).
Hi! Thanks for the video. Just to make sure, there's no way to automatically generate a continuous legend for the shape maps, correct? So, for example, for the maps your show at 0:51 and 9:35, there's no way to add a legend showing the range and color range (in the same way you'd add a legend to a bar chart or table set to show a continuous gradient scale) without manually assigning a categorical legend and converting the map to a categorical map (rather than continuing to display numerical, continuous data)?
Thank you posting this video! Do you know when the shape file feature will be available in an update ? That is, no longer a preview feature. I can't access any preview features either. Do you know how I can view these? I'm using the September 2019 version since my work hasn't updated (prob because of COVID). Thanks again
@@LondonBusinessAnalyticsGroup Hello! Such a great video!! Have you uploaded any other video about mapping in Power BI? I'm looking forward to finding out how to use the mapbox 😬
Hello. I'm trying to follow along, but I don't see any option to change the map from USA to UK, in fact, I don't see a country field in the list of formatting options. Have things changed since your video was made?
@@LondonBusinessAnalyticsGroup Similarly to the comment above, I've added a Shape Map to my dashboard view, however there's nothing listed in the Fields list (therefore I can't select/change the country). Have you imported a file with these data fields earlier? Could you explain what you mean by "Add a map"? Many thanks in advance!
Hi @London Business Analytics Group !. Could you tell me what is the name of the icon map you use, because I don't have in my powerbi or how I could get it please.
Awesome tutorial. I found this after attending your Power BI course last week. It makes it super simple to pass this map chart hurdle for me. Thanks!

This is brilliant, anyway if removing the Scotland and wales part of the map and having England only?
This is very useful thank you! Would you have an idea of where there are good shape maps for railway lines ?
