It's.comforting to me that even you can be unhappy with your work one day and look at it with fresh eyes the next day and like it ... Seems to be a common thing with artists.
This is great and you make it simple. I'm a marine painter and you have taken the hard mystery out of painting and made it so comprehensible to painters. thank you for doing this. What you do is a gift to the art world.
One of the most skilled artist here on You Tube and a great color teacher.
Thank you! I was struggling trying to paint the lake in a XMas gift I'm painting.
NICE paints, too. SO smooth and easy to mix!
Mark, thank you for your videos. They have helped me make so much progress in my painting and have certainly improved my confidence. Keep posting them. I hope to some day be in your area to thank you personally.
I absolutely love your videos. You are very good at breaking the painting process down into smaller, comprehensible pieces. I wish I'd had teachers such as you, I truly do. I found this channel through a simple google-search without ever expecting there would be someone on UA-cam to teach me a little bit of everything I never knew I didn't know, from colour theory to methods of painting, from the contents of oil paints to ways of setting up a studio. It is an artist's toolbox holding everything a person needs to either start or progress with oil painting, and it has not only inspired me to paint, but also made me believe I could do so much more than I ever dared dream. From the bottom of my heart: Thank you.
The beauty of creating art is making it look like it was made with ease and you sir, are a master at breaking down the process of painting, I take my hat off!. I'm so glad that I understand English so I'm blessed with these wonderful art lessons.
Once again and as always your camera set up , your demonstration AND your detailed ( but not too detailed) explanations are wonderful. Water is so weird, It’s soft with hard edges but colors close to each other. It’s hard but soft. Thank you. Love it. I’m Painting right now with Geneva paint. I like them!
Its a great choice of water- for me perfectly showing that the realistic and the abstract always exist at the same moment and that rhythms is the feeling of nature - its is very beautifull and very inspiring. The more I watched it, the more I could feel the soft rhythms of the water
Thank you so much for sharing your skill and talent. I've learned so much from you over the years. Truly grateful!
Thank you Mark. I've been following your site for a while now, and am just mid way thru my third painting. It is a seaside cove, and this video demonstrated clearly how to paint water without layering. The first time did not work out too sell, as I basically scumbled the entire water portion of the painting. This time I did it your way, and it looks hugely better. Thank you.
This is such a wonderful and helpful painting and I, for one, am glad you decided to share it with us. Especially because of your uncertainty, which is something we all struggle with.
So many videos of painting wild ocean water, this is perfect for painting ponds and lakes! Thank you so much !!
Mark, you did a fantastic program here. Much appreciated. I learned.
I love your Geneva oil paints so much. I am finally bravely using them and I can't believe I waited this long. Your colors mix so beautifully, and I love the limited palette. I wasted a lot of time and money on trash colors, ugh! I am even using the color checker! We have a common love of Singer Sargent. And, I like the "how to paint this thing" videos. Thank you from Groves, Texas!
Looks good. I took a long time trying to paint water and this helped a lot.
Just amazing painting mastery - you are the best teacher for your simplicity and clear illustration 😊😍💕❤️
I love your video showing how you paint. It is always so real looking.
I adore the way you teach, very relaxing ... thank you!!
Great video sir! Thank you for sharing your time and talent. I learned a lot. It is a great painting!
Great Demo, loved the finished piece... Good on you Mark for showing the finished work up front, I always scrub painting videos to the end to see the finished work. I'm not wasting my time watching 20 min of painting only find out its not my jam.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, this water effect is fantastic.
Have a Merry and Blessed Christmas.
Thank you....i am always waiting for your videos. Interesting to see creating so many values, when reference is limited in its values.....excellent
amazing to see your palette ..........so many value shifts
Brother you nailed it. You can never judge your on work. Some paintings of done that I wanted to destroy so no one would ever see them and have someone in my family say how good it was. And some that I thought were pretty good only to have people pick em apart. Thank God art is subjective
Perfectly articulated! Your thoughts are 💯! Spot on.
Thank u sir for lessons , u are the greatest art teacher ever
Your lesson is amazing thank you for the time that you spend for this, is really helpfull
Yes please! A video on scale and how to scale well would be wonderful. ❤️🎨
Most definitely. And nice Funko.
Helpful as always, Mark. Thank you! I'm learning accuracy and restraint. :)
Great demo, many thanks Mark
Great tutorial,I’m just starting photorealistic oil landscapes so this will help tremendously thnx
You make it so easy , brilliant
I love your videos. Always open my understanding of painting and your videos are such an instructional tools. Please do a clouds video.
Excellent - thank you as always for sharing.
Great video, love the painting!, happy holidays..
Thank you ❤ a brilliant video, and a brilliant painting, but explained so unbelievably simple
Mr. Mark Hope you don't mind me calling you Mark? when it comes to water to me it's very much like drawing glass.. it's easy to over do it instead of just using broader strokes like Sargent loading up the brush stepping back make your calculation and then moving in. Also trying to recreate water or glass without any surroundings can be challenging..
I want to thank you for taking the time to make these videos much like Bob Ross your a huge help with your instructions
Thanks for the video, as always.
Your channel and teaching (especially the 5 colors = your palet) really helped me to get properly started with painting since this summer, so thanks a lot for that.
Do you know the name of the 5 colors he use?
Thank you for your teaching! It helps me a lot😀👍
Most interesting aspect of this painting is doing in minimal layers..........its very very interesting.......alla prima......wow! .....
we live in grate times where masters like him ,allows us, through technology in comfort of our home , learn how to also paint correctly like the old masters or just improving your technic in general ,
I'm watching your video with respect
Always amazingly good~ 👍👍👍
Trés intéressant as usual. Merci
Bless your heart. I have broke my habit years ago of mixing my paint with a brush. This way of painting dirties up all your colors. Therefore when you need some clean color you have to put out more paint, and this matter of mixing always wasted paint. That is one of my pet peeves I can't hardly stand to watch somebody makes paint with a brush. LOL I know it's my problem. Thank you for the lesson, I find it very helpful.
When painting water it is important to think what makes sense. Such as the highest highlight is the flattest part of the water, because that said highlight is direct reflection of the sky. Everything else on the water is shadow due to the increasing verticality of the waves. The bigger the wave, the more reflective lights and moreso the more transparency through the waves. Just think what you're doing and the movements of the water.
I feel this way about painting horse hair. The lightest hairs are perpendicular to the lights, and the darkest hairs are facing the shadows. And the same with glistening pubic hair. Each curl either faces the lighights or the darkest hairs. I use a liner for the finest hairs, but I have to admit I have issues with horse hairs at times because they end up looking like pubic hairs.
Beautiful water
Вы Гений))),просто супер,как реально смотрится вода)!!! Мы очень вам благодарны и я подписалась на вас!!!! пожалуйста еще про воду ,если можно))) Благодарю,вас вы гений!!!!!
Thank U Sir for showing us how to mix the colours,, this helps a lot..😊😊🌿🌸🌸🌿👏👏
Thank you sir for this tutorial
Very nice beautiful painting
You are one of the artists and art teachers I admire most. I love your artwork, your humbleness, and your willingness to share your knowledge and wisdom. It seems like you have very high standards and are kind of hard on yourself. Beautiful painting!
Very nice!! Thank you
I cant judge my own work either
I'd like to try painting water.... it's awesome
I like it a lot.
Great sir ,thank u soo much . From India
Really helpful, thank you.
The painting is far more interesting than the photo itself.
glad to know i'm not the only one who keeps painting after signing the piece!
Thank you for talking through your paintings. I enjoy listening to what you have to say about them and they always bring up one or two little questions. Like in this video you mentioned your brushes & it peaked my interest because I think part of the trouble I'm having is I'm not getting the feedback from my brushes I am looking for. What brand of brushes do you use? I am thinking of switching to mostly hogs hair brushes but would like to find a quality brand so that I will have consistency across all the styles of brushes. Thanks for everything you share. It is helpful to those of us who don't have instructors.
Amazing😍
Nice.
A different way of approaching this scene would be to start with two tones one for the foreground and one for the background and you can see where the background interacts with the foreground . Think of it as a screen print, you could create high contrast version of the photo, or use do a line drawing. If you paint the foreground colour first you can use negative space to outline the foreground with he background colour, or you could do it carefully wet with both colours. Then you can add in the variation of relative mid-tones in both ranges (if you need to blend then you can either overlay the same colours or blend when you are putting down each the first time). Adding in darks and highlights.
One aspect I think is a particular trait of ripples especially looking down is you get highlight that are on the peak an trough and those can form light loops. Another aspect is how glare and transparency of water interact depending on the type of shadow. In very clear water where there is a large tree blocking the glare or a close enough branch. you will get this effect in the foreground. You might even want to bend perspective to capture this experience as our gaze is rarely fixed and our brains composites such an experience. Or at least mine does.
I agree with you. It needed another cover with white for detail.
It felt like I've been waiting for ages, can't thank enough
Awesome water
Thanks Mark: Real Nice
I love this
This is great, thank you! Can you do a how to paint teeth - oil painting demonstration? Teeth are so incredibly difficult.
Very good!
Thank you so useful
Very beautiful
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!
Hello Mark. You mentioned the artist's curse. Try looking at your painting in a mirror or upside down. It tricks your mind and it seems like you're looking at another painting through fresh eyes.
Voda vam je stvarna super 👌👍
Thank you.
I like to paint portraits and still lives, but I don't like water, however this is a good video for those who like it. Maybe I should give it a try.
Thank you 🙏
Uncanny timing: I was just about to look for a video on painting water.
Standing bodies of water can't conform to the exterior of objects. 😎
We know every move you'll make. We are watching you.
Me too

I always enjoy your instruction of painting but I noticed that you are pushing your brush in which you have stated that you do not do.
I'm trying to find someone that can show me to paint Gulf of Mexico on a deep water oil rig I worked on name after my dad cand you help me out
Thank Mark
Can you please tell again what are the 5basic specific colors you have use
Thanks
Putting values and changing colors, to me is ???? Values and color are not same it is confusing for me this two words explain thanks
can anyone say.....what is the word opposite of alla prima?
Indirect painting.
Alla prima is also known as Direct Painting, and the opposite technique of starting with a black and white painting, waiting for layers to dry, and glazing colors, is called Indirect Painting.
@@RobertF- Thank you
@@sujanithtottempudi2991 Sure thing 👍
Mark, I'm gonna suggest a painting of horse hair. I'm having trouble getting the hairs of the horse to look like vibrant horse hairs.
he has a video where he paints a horse -there's also a dog one
