  • Everyone once in awhile we get in a special prototype one-off guitar that presents a unique opportunity - this is one of those times. A very special Taylor Grand Auditorium that was made with special "Presentation Grade" Walnut from someone with the initiall's "BT" special wood stash. It looks beautiful and has tone to match. I have a 114 walnut. It's my favorite tone ever.
Haven't ever been very impressed by taylor, but, this one in the acoustic room grabbed my soul, and my wife got a bonus and brought it home as a surprise a few weeks later.
Really, really meant a lot to me, and i love playing it even more because she bought it for me ❤️
    Anyway, walnut is special

I loved the sound of this guitar in part because of its great sustain. When demonstrating acoustic guitars, the sustain is of great importance for the finger picking melody.

Many years ago I was tempted by an all-walnut Taylor in an auditorium size. I passed on it and have always regretted doing so. This guitar sounds pretty amazing! I love the melding of tones that you get from walnut. It has the brightness you expect from rosewood and the richness you get from mahogany. Greg sounding instrument!

I have an all walnut Martin 000-18 style custom shop. Walnut really does have great tones.

    really likked this!!
What I find interesting is that I always thought I am not that much a fan of the V-bracing. But with this guitar I really liked it. Sounded woody and earthy imo. Very nice!!

Fine guitar, fine demo. You can change the wood but it's still distinctively a Taylor.

Not sure if you listened to your friends in Montana, Music Villa, did a run of Custom Taylor guitars, both Grand Pacific (C17) and Grand Orchestra (C18) with backs of mahogany, Rosewood, AND walnut. Thanks, Chris, I agree about the walnut.

yep my alvarez mg710 Sitka and walnut with white binding with forward shift x bracing sounds amazing. $700 out the door! Taylor does make some good guitars but the price point is a deal killer.

Sweet, Chris! If you'd like some black walnut seeds, let me know as I was offered from a tree after talking about getting hit with acorns while standing under a downtown street tree as squirrels were cutting in a big old oak as a friend was sitting in his new rig (sheltered by the metal roof). Have you ever written tabs for your demos, and released them to an adoring public?
My latest (and I vow, the last guitar) has a beautifully figured blackwood back that I could not resist.

Enjoying the walnut tones, eating vanilla ice-cream with chopped banana and eagerly awaiting the first "I hate Taylors they're too bright" comment........hey just thought chopped walnut with the ice-cream and banana! Damn, I don't have any.

Hey Chris, I want to know when you are going to teach us how to play that amazing Bob Taylor inspired piece you play at 8min 30sec. I have been watching you play this for years and I love it, but can't figure it out, no matter how many (100's) of times I watch it or how slow I play it in YT. There are notes you play that I can't find. Please give us a slow demo as I would love so much to be able to play it. 🙏

Awesome guitar. Too bad it is a one-off. I've never played a walnut guitar. Awesome demo, great chops!

Is it a black walnut? Or English walnut? Black walnut is very oily and I don’t know how that would work or dry out properly.

Can I get that in a GT?

Having now listened to walnut as a tone wood I have to say I prefer mahogany and rosewood. Walnut is a beautiful wood, however I prefer it for furniture making and not as a guitar tone wood. It’s sound does not stand out.

Cool guitar until the bridge lifts off or some other weird twist/crack/bow develops. I'd rather buy ten Alvarez guitars than a Taylor.
