  • After living with the new 2023 Toyota Highlander Platinum, I had some thoughts towards the tech but most importantly, the new 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Check out this short review to hear my thoughts!

    Ok...
I just (a little less than a month ago) traded in my 2012 v6 hybrid for a 2023 hybrid.
    Old avg mpg 25
New so far (nice weather no AC) avg 30 for city/hwy mix and in the 40s lot of times for shorter errands.
It's very capable and not "under" powered by any means.. BUT to be clear... If you enjoyed the hybrid v6 bc of how fun it was too drive and how "responsive" it felt.... Well a good portion of that is.. gone
Not all of it but you will notice the difference.
Oh and the wireless charger is 💩... The plate is slick as hell and contact is inconsistent at BEST....
Interior is quieter with the 9 years of progress.
The cargo cover can be stashed under the floor board.. and that's awesome.
And as of now, without getting into trim line specifics, that's about it

The true reason Toyota changed to the 4 cylinder turbo is simply to conform to new emissions rules, plain and simple. You move from a 6 cylinder to a four turbo and you only get one (1), yes ONE mile per gallon better mileage! It has nothing to do with being loyal to Toyota, it is a preference to have an engine with less chance of something going wrong and only get one less mile per gallon mileage. It is a no brainer to me. Maybe this move by Toyota will help them sell more hybids.

A lot of complaints about lagging with these engines after 5K miles. I’m staying away from the highlanders from these model years.

I still think vehicle of this type/size, a V6 suits it better. For example, the base 2.4T in the RX is apparently meh, the hybrids are better.

this is not accurate I got the 2.4 T its amazing power, I have tested the V6 i thought it was dead no torque at all..

@@ginomiranda3792 it’s not really about being accurate, but what people prefers. You prefers the turbo 4, and many people and myself prefers the V6 - more smooth power delivery etc.

    I don’t think that turbo 4 will last 400 000 miles like 3.5 V6.

I’m more afraid not too many parts will support for 400000 miles

Actually Toyotas 4 turbo is Judy as fast as the V6 .. and the 4 has the same reliability.. the turbo is real fast

Losing the V6 is a huggggeeeee mistake. In this class I now buy the Pilot.

Don’t like the turbo. This should be a two row. The third row along with turbo is a no go. Not everyone needs 3 rows. Too many on market. They can buy a minivan.

Um you’re wrong. You should definitely fear the turbo. It’s not going to have the Toyota reliability you expect from their workhorse 3.5l v6. In a big car like this a turbo 4 will be stressed working harder than normal and it’ll wear the engine out much faster. You can’t beat physics

You’re basing that on feelings not facts. It’s going to be a great engine with typical Toyota reliability

    • @naveenthemachine

@@slowfiveoh4986 more like typical mythical Toyota reliability. A turbo 4 in a large suv screams disaster long term
Taking any turbo engine and slapping on a Toyota log on it doesn’t make it instantly reliable. Is that what happened with the supra? No. It still has bmw reliability no matter what you do because it’s a rebadged bmw

Fear the turbo!! It’s becoming a class action lawsuit. It has a ton of NHTSA complaints on the engine. It has terrible lag stalls and looses power throught acceleration. It bucks and surges. It is unsafe because it randomly won’t take off and causes an accident when turning into traffic. This review is completely wrong. His saying no lag is wrong!!!!!!
