I'm afraid this is where the coaches of the Romanians found out that short hair was hip in the West and therefore forced their gymnasts to get their hair cut for the 1988 season, which resulted in especially Daniela Silivas celebrating her greatest successes with exploded hair she didn't even like herself. It's such a shame seeing all these great Romanian gymnasts with such terrible hair in 1988. You can see it wasn't their choice.
The first half of this video shows the compulsory routines of the 1985-1988 cycle. Compulsory routines were a lot easier than optional routines. As you can see in the final minutes of the video, the gymnasts performed much harder skills in their optional routines.
