Historic Helicopters in Somerset have a Royal Navy version flying along with a host of other ex-mil cabs they've restored and maintained (Whirlwing, various Sea Kings, a Lynx AH).
when i was a child the army used the field next to our housing estate as a helipad. we were amazed by the helicopters landing and taking off. The army used the Westland Scout and Westland Wessex in those days. Some of the pilots would take the time to explain to us what the controls did, i have some some great memories of hot summer days the smell of aviation fuel watching these magnificent machines land. By the time i went to high school our hockey pitch was a temporary helipad the wessex was still used along with the Lynx. Occasionally a Gazelle would land but the queen of the skies was and always will be the Wessex
Fantastic chopper, thankfully i grew up at the tail end of the troubles, but i remember times going out to the garage and it full of soldiers and this helicopter flying past and near the house, dropping and picking up troops in nearby fields
I flew the venerable H-34 in the Navy in the early 70s. Got to fly an Australian Wessex while our ship, the USS Midway visited Perth, Australia in 1980. The Wessex was a great helicopter.
In 1965 my father did mention one of these helicopter crashed at Nanga Ghat( Gaat)Sarawak ,he is native Iban working for the British as Sarawak Constabulary. Only those whose fighting in the border of Sarawak and Kalimantan (Indonesia) get to experience aboard it.
I served on both 72 Sqn, RAF Odiham (71-73) and 18 Sqn, RAF Gutersloh (73-76). I will always have fond memories of the venerable Wessex, I would fly on them at a moments notice. (Photo from Marylebone Mercury PR, that's me in the middle!)
Always loved to hear it was a Wessex Callsign coming when waiting on the helipad ..amazing times flying in these which I will never forget. I think there used to be a pilot of one who was fond of wearing cowboy boots lol
One incredible helicopter, what a workhorse, I know they are no longer in service, but would be awesomely to see on flying again
Ross White there is one Navy example still flying ua-cam.com/video/wspelfWtO1g/v-deo.html

You may hear it again one day .
When was this filmed? Only one of these remain flying today
2008 I think, back in the day, they were in the process of being retired.
@@MELLYMEDIA i thought they we're retiring them in 2003, same year I was born
@@jameshardie9914 Maybe so, back in. the day I can't remember the exact date.
