Explore the complex journey of Greek immigrants in America and their process of becoming accepted as "white" over the course of the 20th century, including efforts of organizations like the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), which played a pivotal role in helping Greek immigrants navigate and overcome these racial barriers. This transformation reveals the fluid nature of racial identities and the impact of socio-political movements in reshaping perceptions in America.

Come join me on a new docu-series that explores identity, racial tensions in the South during the 20th century, and the unique experiences of those who historically called Louisiana home.
My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

Hello I am Greek, and I am sorry to dissapoint but MANY MANY Greek men are very bad people. It is shocking how uneducated and misogynistic some of them are. I get harrassed CONSTANTLY by men and every time I am shocked, because everytime they manage to outdo themselves and be even more insanely stupid. The women aren't good either, most of them think as if they were created to be abused by s t u p i d men, and then they turn around and degrade other women because of it. Some Greek people are great, open minded and kind... but that is RARE in Greece. Everything the Americans were saying about them back then is how I would describe the ones that live in Greece now.
In addition at least the Americans gave them a chance to become better people, they said that if they clean themselves up and find a job they will be accepted, and they were accepted. However right now in Greece ALbanians DO NOT get the same treatement as Americans gave the Greeks. For Greek people an Albanian will NEVER become a human being, let alone someone who is worth to live in Greece. Albanian small bussiness are constantly sabotaged in the worst way possible, even in good neighbourhoods .,..
Even I have been a victim of racism in my own country for being too pale and looking Russian... and I mean I have been through A LOT!

Greeks didn't "became" white, Greeks **are the definition of white**, the benchmark to compare one self for whiteness, the more away you are from being Greek the less white you are, the reason white has any meaning isn't because of the yanks killing native Americans they are because of science e.g mathematics (Greek word) physics (Greek word) philosophy (Greek word) because of architecture (e.g white house is based on Greek architecture) and so on and so forth actually there are thousands of Greek words either direct loans or emglized in the English language (disaster, polymer, nike, ok, telephone, architect, economy being just a miniscule sample )and because when other people were savages and barbarians Greeks had democracy poetry built Parthenon's schools theaters etc .
Saying otherwise doesn't make the Greeks less white just shows how brown the person is who speaks out those ridiculous uneducated and ignorant opinions (Michael Dukakis who is of Greek decent, was an elected candidate of presidency of the united states in 1988)

I met an Italian girl with such heritage once: Alesandra! She could even speak some broken Greek my sweetheart.
But your results is not a suprise. Ιt happens all the time in both sides of Greece: Asia minor and Italy due to Greek colonization and Eastern Roman Empire's majority's population which was Greeks. Turks making DNA tests are shocked with the results! All of the Asia minor's population are Greek converts to Islam either by force or to escape being 2nd class citizens/slaves and pay taxes to the Sultan.
Anyway, regarding south Italy here is a documentary out of many out there ua-cam.com/video/Kxq8TpSDn8k/v-deo.html. The famous poet Konstantinos Kavafis once said that at 17th 18th 19th centuries, one could travel easily from Egypt to Romania and from Cyprus to Southern Italy, the holy land or Crimea, without speaking anything else than Greek. There were many Greek scholars who opposed the Greek 1821's revolution as "we r taking the Ottomans from the inside. We are their the bankers, the diplomats, the merchants and doctors" . There is a 1873 letter from a French diplomat in Cyprus writing back to his government "We need to stop the Greeks creating the state they dream off, because that state will be stronger than ours".
Ofcorse with no suprise modern "Greek" politicians, these puppets of the Germans and the Americans, don't five a f*ck about Greek diaspora anywere as like most of European governments they don't believe in such constructed, ancient, old fashion, anachronistic terms like Nation, blood, motherland, heritage etc. I really want to visit beautiful southern Italy, to meet maybe the last decendants of my Nation's history there before they ll go extinct after thousands of years. Not that metropolitan Greeks doing better 😢. The state is replacing us all!

In the USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, UK, Germany, Sweden, France and Belgium where many Greeks immigrated throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, their children and proceeding generations are now higher on the education ladder than the general population of their host countries, assuming a great number of professional positions in academia, business, medicine, management and every other field. They are also in general, better off financially, higher on most other well-to-do indicators, such as home ownership and lower in the crime rate and yet aren't necessarily in the super-rich billionaire bracket in great numbers either. This was all achieved from hard work and a huge respect for education and the realization and determination of an individual's potential. So, for the most part, they sit comfortably now somewhere in the middle to uppper middle class and that is something they should be very proud of.
There are countless notable people of Greek descent of every country they immigrated to. The following is just one example. Mike Lazaridis, a Greek-Canadian, known as the 'father of the smartphone' (so that computer in your pocket, you can thank a Greek for) was raised in Ontario and when he made it big financially, he gave the largest personal donation in Canadian history to establish the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and a business school which sports his name, both state-of-the-art tertiary educational institutions that have elevated Canadian education and society, whilst giving countless students from all over the world the opportunity for advancement and success. So truly contributing to society in a profoundly positive way. Carrying the flame of his ancestors, Pythagoras et al would be proud!
Also, reputable sources state that indeed today's Greeks are the decendants of those ancient Greeks who laid the foundations of Western Civilization.

Nah, bro they were just different and we don't like different things. We don't like foreigners that come in and speak their strange languages and make their smelly foods (until we try them and realise they taste incredible). This is a revolving door of a story. Foreigners come in, get bullied, attacked, discriminated, long enough time goes by, foreigners get assimlated, integrated, often come to positions of some power and means. They become part of the larger whole and then new foreigners come in .. and everyone (including the former foreigners) blames them for coming into their space with their strange languages and smelly foods. Depending on how compatible those people are, how they look, how tolerant the new group is towards different people (fun fact, just beause someone is getting discriminated, doesn't stop them from doing the same to others. Like an Indian American might get discriminated for their skin then discriminate a black man or chinese person) they will integrate and become part of the whole faster.
There is no right answer to this issues. If people don't integrate well enough it creates resentment and alianation. Racism, hatred and even violence. If they integrate too well they lose their identity as a people. And the reality is, a lot of people are vey attached to their identities. It's why we see so many conspiracy theories about black americans being the original jews, moors, egyptians etc etc. Because they were robbed of their identity, and now they're desperately looking for one.

Scientifically proven by non-Greek universities in order to avoid any bias, we Greeks have remained for the most part unchanged, intact, in spite Greece being in the crossroads of civilizations. Later, a Greek with an Italian university cooperated to confirm the exact same results. Just yesterday, there was the ceremony of the Olympic Flame Lit in Greece. The Presidential Guard also participated. My point is, in both of those 2 organizations, only Greeks are allowed to participate for obvious reasons which isn't the point here. Just watch the video, I really wonder how can people consider us non-white? It's really interesting. It's not that I care, but curiosity. Are we people of color? The only thing I care and one would have to pry out of my dead, cold hands is my "Greekness".
We also live in this place for the last 4500 years, at least provenly, again, scientifically. Greece has 270 days a year sunshine, we're adapted to produce melanin in summer. That's it. We can become tri-colore depending on where our clothes and swimsuits are situated on our body, covered, uncovered parts. Sure, we have no connection to Northern Europeans, but still. We're a little unique tribe unlike any other (we have no known connection to any other people - a little to Italians but I don't like mentioning it since Italians did as much damage to us as the Turks, we were getting attacked by the Italian peninsula from Roman era up to WWII) which is a miracle we survived historically. All because of the resolve of my ancestors to not bend the knee for anyone nor submit. Plus, our ingenuity.

Your right regarding the KKK derived from Greek. It translates to "Kiklos" which means "circle". For that group to have their very existence derived from the Greek and yet they were against the Greeks was totally ignorant. Also, regarding the comments Henry Pratt made; I find him quite ignorant as well considering he probably didn't know where on the map Greece was. The cultural, etc, gifts the Greeks have given the world stand on their own merit. BUT, ignorance has prevented many from realizing this. Also Consider...
There are Greeks in Egypt (Alexandria) and they are of a darker complexion (due to proximity of equator) than their northern brethren. They are still considered "white". Just because the country is located on African continent doesn't mean they are considered "black". Just as Spaniard of Madrid is considered "white". They certainly are NOT Latino. Yet many ignorant people do consider them that. People from Iran (Ancient Persia) for example are also considered "white". (In the texts of Alexander The Great, he describes Roxanne as fair skinned and blue eyes. NOT a dark Latino as depicted by Rosario Dawson in the movies). Sicily, and Italy, France, and other parts of Europe were conquered by Alexander the Great, and many Greeks still remain there today. The Doric and Corinthian columns everywhere in Roman Architecture (Colosseum, etc) all come from Greek culture.
People are simply unaware of their own culture let alone other cultures and their subsequent impact on the global stage. Sad indeed.

People are commenting without watching the videos. Greeks are not black, are not Asian, are not Indian, are not middle eastern. Everyone in Europe and Russia is considered white among us Europeans.
When Americans are talking about being white, they consider white someone that has Anglo-Saxon descend, when it comes among peers. The term is stronger in US, because being white also meant higher social/working class. So, because Italians and Greeks were doing initially low income jobs, they were NOT considered white, based on US standards. They are still Caucasians in race!
It's just people on the Internet and from the US especially, have really distorted perception of the reality due to the social extreme conditions that the US was built on.
There are comments in this video that consider Greeks being non-white as being black 🤣
There are of course Greeks with a darker skin, especially those days, because as poor as they were, they were working mostly in agriculture, exposed for over 12 hours a day under the hot sun. This is also true for Southern Greeks and islanders, where they get high temperatures and exposures all year round.

Νice research!...the story of Louis Tikas is also a reason why Greeks were targeted by the KKK! Louis Tikas was actually the leader of the workers among whom there were still many Greeks and Cretans who went to the USA to live the "American dream". Instead they lived through the so-called "Ludlow Massacre" which was one of the bloodiest employer and state attacks on the US union movement. It took place on April 20, 1914 in the town of Ludlow, Colorado and was the culmination of the labor oppression of 12,000 miners in the area.
The Cretan Louis who is today celebrated around the world on Easter 1914 fell dead by the bullets of the Colorado Militia. He was the victim in a bloody battle waged by the miners against the regime that Rockefeller wanted to impose
The chronicle was never written and is not included in the American history books. And it was almost forgotten, until in 1944 Woody Garthy wrote a song entitled "The Ludlow Massacre". The song was often heard at the demonstrations of the 60s, and then all was forgotten again...

If the definition of white has shifted then why were Greeks, Italians etc "white" legally in the US from the beginning? Being "white" does not mean you didn't suffer discrimination and people thinking you as foreign and different. In the past people didn't mix as much and were much more prejudiced. Even neighbouring populations did not get on and looked down on each other. So treating people unequally is not all about whether people were black or white. It can be due to different religion, ethnicity, social class etc. The Whiteness studies in the US seem to be making everything about race i.e. How the Irish Became White, How the Italians Became White etc. But legally these groups were white on arrival in the US. There are complex reasons for why they were discriminated against to do with religion, history and why Irish were discriminated against is different to why Italians were discriminated against. If you were of African origin that would be completely different again. Each group has their own story. Greeks would have just been seen as foreign and different. Is this series trying to equate being white with social class and being accepted as part of the major group? Because that is not accurate IMO Groups that were legally white still had that advantage and of course did not suffer things like chattel slavery.

@@misterbobdobalina What I mean is they were legally white from the start of the US. For example Irish Americans have been legally classified as white since the first U.S. census in 1790, that Irish Americans were legally white for the purposes of the Naturalization Act of 1790 that limited citizenship to "free White person(s)". There are genetic studies on populations the Irish for example are just Northwestern Europeans and the same as other populations they cluster with i.e. Scots, English, Welsh, Dutch. Southern Italians and Greeks are the most southern Europeans and they have received extra East Mediterranean input since the Roman Empire time. However Greeks and Italians have always been legally white in the US. The differences with Europeans is that Northern Europeans have more Steppe and less Farmer input while Southern Europeans have more Farmer and less Steppe but also some extra East Med as I've stated already.

Thank you for sharing! As a Greek American historian and anthropologist I appreciate you bringing this to the surface in the discussion of combating with white supremacy in this nation. Greek Americans today are diving into this history and wanting to preserve their identity while some in the community have assimilated to complete whiteness causing the political divide even within our communities. The mentioning of AHEPA is key as they were successful and the Americanization of generations of Greeks seeking to be part of Whiteness. There was an opposing organization that was unfortunately not as successful who sought to be more aggressive at advocating for Greeks and their fight against prejudice and discrimination and at the same time strict preservation of our cultural heritage. That organization was known as GAPA or Greek American Progressive Association.

In the UK as an antique hangover kept on by aristocracy whose roots lay in invasions by Scandinavian Europeans the swarthy skinned were looked down on as the peasants. Nobles for some while had 1st night rights to brides of these serfs. This may even go back to roman times where a rural peasant was often a slave. William the Conqueror passed a law banning slavery of Englishmen, but cultural prejudices carried on into the 20th century. This probably made the UK population whiter than it would have been otherwise.

If you see for example mosaics or paintings from ancient greek and roman times you will notice both darker skinned and lighter skinned people. The enduring legacy of racism is that people refuse to this day to acknowledge that there could be europeans with darker skin.

Charlotte, NC had a large and thriving Greek Community a century ago. They at one time owned every diner in the city. One place even served the first pizza in the city.
Times are changing though. Many of the old diners are gone. The Greek children didn't want to work the hours and many became professionals. There are a few Greeks lawyers in town. Where they have excelled is in real estate. One family still owns diners and deals in real estate.
The community is growing. A new church was built in Southeastern Charlotte while the old cathedral is near downtown Charlotte.
I don't recall any talk of prejudice against the Greeks here.
M grandfather was Sicilian. He had the Mediterranean coloring common in the area. His dark skin was an impediment when he was in the Army during WW 1 in "Camp Meade" Maryland.
Sicily was once a Greek colony. Siragusa is the Sicilian pronunciation of Syracuse. The Pope sent the Normans into Sicily to chase out the Greek Orthodox Church.

As a Greek who spent a considerable amount of my childhood in South Africa, it's fascinating to see how different the sentiment was about Greek immigrants depending on the country they immigrated. That's to say, in the US we were considered non-whites while at the same time in SA the pre-appartheid-oppressed african people (in their majority) would hardly differentiate Greeks, Italians and French immigrants from the (native by that time) Dutch and British settlers, whereas, Indian immigrants where considered people of similar status to them. Basically, what mattered the most I guess, was the colour of a man's skin. I don't know, perhaps I'm wrong. Great videos anyhow.

My sister's were born in the 1950s and they were called "Indian". My mom who was from Turkey had to deal with a lot. I remember in the 1960's and 1970's having my last name anglicized by the teachers, and kids saying, I am not what "white. Because I was Greek Orthodox, people were confused because the Orthodox church was different than what they were used to. There other things I dealt with. Because of this I never considered myself white. Culturally, Greeks are more Middle Eastern anyway.

I was surprised how dark skinned he was. I wish that the old bounds that we had with his people and mine would have sustained the test of time, but welcome to America!

It feels so good actually a recorded history unlike the hating Anglo Saxons, if the US experience was/is anything like Australias then I am sorry for what you experienced.
I am Australian born Greek and was subjected to the racism and discrimination and had to defend my twin sister who would be taunted by the Anglos .
Much like the African American people who are known to get pissed when a non AfAm uses the word. We took our derogatory word being “ Wog” and claimed it as our own. It didn’t matter which Mediterranean country you were from you were not Anglo Saxon even the German people were not white.
This behaviour died down when the Asian people ( the boat people from Vietnam) and other refugees such as the Cambodians. Now with the influx of African refugees and settlers they are the targets.
Total bullshit in my opinion, the Italians and Greeks have an expression…. Mia facia, uno racia. A strong bond between us because we were considered outsiders.
I unlike many am grateful for experiencing that because it was what made me what I am today.
I haven’t time for hate and discrimination but I am contemptuous of all humanity.
Every race throughout history has practiced racism, slavery , cannibalism rape pillage etc .
No one is innocent in my view !!!

Hi Danielle, congratulations for this video.
I have relatives in US, i am Greek. Greeks in the US had the same treatment that all late European immigrants had when they got there. Of course Greeks because they were extremely poor when they arrived, it was considered that they were dirty, primitive, lazy, prone to gambling etc. Of course all of this was untrue at a certain degree at least. Greeks with the help of AHEPA, worked very hard in order to make money and to especially educate their kids. Education is very important for the Greek race. Of course today, the other Americans think highly of the Greeks because Greeks made money and fortunes in the US some times more than the Northern European Americans.
I have read about the incidences in Nebraska and Kansas, thank God there are other states in the US.
I also know from my relatives, we were not the best people (i can give you example from my relatives), but i think this is the same for the first European immigrants of US.
By the way, Southern Italians have a lot of Greek DNA. We are not the same people though.
    Thanks.

Maybe in the perverted minds of some people in US we are not white, but this doesn't change the fact of what we are and what our identity really is. Whites are not only the American WASPs and irish Catholics. Anyway, I find it completely funny and stupid not to be considered white, which defies completely common sense.

Tourists go to Greece in the summer for vacations, and because Greeks like to sunbathe and spend most of their time outdoors, they think this is their skin color, all year round!!!
Also on the islands most are fishermen and people who work in the countryside and in open spaces and because there is a lot of sunshine it is natural that they are sunburned and not black!!!

No one ever talks about skin colour but facial features and structure. In Dodecanese islands people definitely have darker features than northern Greeks and you can find Western Asian and southern Italian appearance quite common there.
Saying all Greeks have white milk skin and blonde and medium brown hair only is white supremacy and sounds like Hitler.
