Port Hopetoun was the end of the Union Canal in Edinburgh and was where Lothian House with the Odeon Cinema are now found to the East of Semple Street. Port Hamilton was a little to the east between Gardner's Crescent and Semple Street and opened soon after Port Hopetoun. Both were basically coal ports and closed in 1922 and were filled in. There was a third port "Lochrin Basin" which served a distillery roughly where Canal Point is now. It closed before the other ports. The current Lochrin Basin is a little to the west.
The Bridge Inn has the BEEST Rhubarb Cheesecake on the Planet! Do you or your wife KNOW of the "HIDDEN" secret in the Kirkyard. No, it's NOT the Watch Tower.
Thanks, enjoyed the video.
Hi Allan. Cracking wee video. I’m ratho born and bred. Interested to know who the wife is. I specifically remember glen Michaels cavalcade.
Cheers thank you, could you not tell from the photos at the end of the video?
@@OurHistoryYourstory I did look but didn’t recognise the face. But I don’t look like I did in my P1 pic, I’m still the same height tho 🤣.
Just to note there was also a post office in Ratho and at one time, an Inn in the main street.
The Hollybush, was the name of the Inn (pub)
Very good Alan, I've learned something today.
Glad to be of service
I watched John Leslie, Grant Stotts brother attempting the vault years ago.
He went straight into the drink hahaha.
Yeah that would make sense as radio forth used to do the introductions etc. Thank you for sharing
What about the history of the yelly shop?
It's a cafe now, believe it used to be a video rental place at one point
The canal basin in Edinburgh is at Port Hamilton, near Tollcross, NOT port Hopetoun.
That's right now it is but back in the day it was port hopetoun

When did Raymond’s Holly bush empire end?
You'd need to ask him but if I had to guess I'd say around 14 years ago?
@@OurHistoryYourstory you certainly know your stuff. Can you do a video on bottom park vs top park?
@@rorymacpherson8516 lol sorry that's too controversial a topic
