    Hello Guys,
    Thanks for all your comments. Yes, you can encounter bears anywhere in Alaska, so you must pay attention to your surroundings while metal detecting (especially with headphones).
    Two pounds of gold is 24 troy ounces in weight. Right now gold is approx. $1400 per troy ounce.

    No Sir. Metal detecting is only illegal here in the US on State Parks, Private Land, Indian Reservations, National Wildlife Preserves and such. Always check the status of the land before you hunt.
