    Killed it again! Thanks for including the two lenses I was considering this one against, especially the Sigma 28-70 f2.8. Didn't see much of difference in bokeh at 70mm between the two and having a little better IQ and much wider focal length makes this very desirable to add to my kit. Much Appreciated!

      the bokeh at 70mm was surprising, I thought it would be a bigger difference.

    kudos to you.. you are the most comprehensive with lens footage examples that are easy for me to grasp about bokeh, lowlight, and wide.. thank you sir. really helpful in helping to find my one-lens-to-do-it-all.

    Thanks for the honest review, I subscribed, I also have a Sigma 28-70, I decided to buy a 20-70 for travel, the car doesn’t have enough of these 20mm to shoot myself, the Sigma performed great, I expected Sony to be a cut above, but No )

    Thank you for the review! I’m considering adding a zoom lens for my travel set up and have come down to 20-70/4 vs Tamron 20-40/2.8. From a hardness / colour rendering perspective, do the two lens match up in performance at wide open for general uses?

    Great video, thank you very much!
    I have recently acquired the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens.
    However, one thing is bothering me or rather I would like to clarify whether it is a general issue with this lens or whether it is a defect specifically with my lens. The lens makes a noise when focussing (with autofocus).
    By the way, the volume of the noise varies depending on the aperture setting. At f/4 the noise is very minimal, almost inaudible. From f/4.5, however, it is clearly audible. And the higher the aperture number (for example f/13), the longer it takes to focus and the longer the noise lasts. However, these differences are small.
    I am not yet familiar with focusing noises from lenses recently released by Sony. For example, the new Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G and the new Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS II are 100% completely silent. The older Sony FE 18mm f/1.8 G, on the other hand, also makes the noise described above, if I remember correctly.
    Does your lens also make this noise? Many thanks in advance!

      I am surprised no one answered you about this but, it sounds like you have a problem with your particular lens. Mine is silent at any focal length or aperture setting. Have you looked into this any further?

      @@stevenguzy570 Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, no one else has replied to me here yet, so I have asked around elsewhere. And I have received confirmation that there is apparently something wrong with my lens. Many others have reported the same as you: no noise.

    Great review! Can you compare the image quality between sony 20-70mm and sigma 24-70 (sharpness, convenient...)

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  8 місяців тому

      sorry, I dont have the sigma anymore, the sony is strong in the following areas: sharpness, stabilization, range, weight and size.
      the sigma is 1 stop faster.
      if you can live with the f4, go with the sony, if not, get the sigma 😁
      f4 is truly hard to live with, a mental block for many, me included, however, there's an older video I made to see if I can live with f4..... turns out I can: ua-cam.com/video/wk6f2q4toz8/v-deo.htmlsi=lCGLyWVNZPid5NHB

    Would you buy this or a 28-70 f2.8 lens?

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  3 місяці тому +1

      well, I do have both, but my preference to photo videos may differ from yours. I do a lot of event video, family/travel video, plenty of low light video, however, my photos are more on the landscape types. My family stuff has been more video than photos, my kids will watch replays of wedding clips before they pick up a physical photo album, but they do appreciate that as well. I use a lot of zooms, but for the latest two years, I havent used the 28-70 f2.8 as much as I should, I use the 20-70 more, I use the 28-200 more (interestingly a inferior lens on paper). While I cant deny loving 2.8 zooms, my wandering heart tends to pick up the 20-70 due to the fact that it's fantastic, easy, and fun to use. You can even optimize the lens further by using the hood from the 16-35pz, makes it almost an inch shorter. The 28-70 f2.8 does stay in my collection, one of those types of lenses that I'm having a hard time letting go..... and I've sold probably 20 lenses in the past year.......

      @darrenhaken 3 місяці тому

      @@CharlieVN thanks for the in-depth answer! It sounds like you enjoy the 20-70 more then? My use case is also a general lens for my family by the way. I currently own the Sony 24-70 GM II but I’m not using it as much as my primes so I’ve been considering a downgrade as more of a travel zoom.
      Do you find the 20-70 to be noticeably lighter than competing f2.8 lenses? Probably not vs the Sigma 28-70 as it’s very light.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  3 місяці тому +1

      @@darrenhaken I do, and it's been nearly a year with this lens, I still enjoy it, not so much the size, but it's one of my clutch lenses. It does take a while to make peace with an F4 lens lmao, but I came to that conclusion a few years back, so theoretically, you may need to deal with multiple issues when going this route from a spectacular f2.8 zoom. This system has many spectacular lenses, but if you lack the will to use it because it's too large, too cumbersome, too heavy, too limiting, then it is all for nothing.

    I have 35mm, 50mm, and 80mm f1.8 primes and a 24-240 super zoom. I don't know if I should get a Sigma 28-70 f2.8, the 24-70 f2.8, or this lens. I feel like I have low light covered with the primes and that thus would be a great do it alp lens for the day time that doesn't sacrifice on image quality like the 24-240 while also getting me a wide angle that I am missing. On the flip side I could buy the 28-70 sigma and a wide prime or even the wide angle zoom from sigma as well. But this would do it all in one. It's very hard to decide.

      @@jigjitsu5599 the 20-70mm? I just received mine last night so I haven't been able to spend much time with it. It's definitely a fantastic landscape and video lens. I can tell that already. It might be a let down for portraits, even environmental ones but I'll have to see.

    Great review! Thanks. Really good to see how it stacks up to both the Tamron 20-40 and Sigma 28-70. It’s hard to decide between the flexibility of the 20-70 and f2.8 of the other lenses.

      it is tough, I purchase these out of pocket and it's a struggle walking out the door with just one, but I'm down to the final candidates, which I'll make in a future video, between the 16-35pz, 20-40, and 20-70..... I thought it would be as easy as simply picking the 20-70, but that hasn't been the case for me.

      @@CharlieVN I bought and then returned the Sony 20-70. I was expecting to love it but the f4 made wider shots a bit boring. Im thinking of the Tamron 20-40 as a walk around, also better in low light. Maybe with the Sigma 28-70 for travel? I’m not skilled enough to make 16mm work except for landscape so I won’t miss it.

      @@CharlieVNeagerly waiting for this video! I have 16-35pz and 70-200f4. Trying to decide between 20-70f4 and Sigma 28-70 to fill the standard zoom gap since I sold the 24-105. Leaning towards Sigma for it's smaller size since I already have the pz on wide end. Mainly used for travel photos. Which would you choose?
