    Hey wiz, thanks for being honest and straightforward. My 05 civic just had its automatic transmission rebuilt at 267,000km(165,000 miles) and the mechanic took my car for an all weekend 300km(150 mile) test drive. Didn’t replace my gas and ran up a toll hwy bill as well. Sams parts in Toronto won’t get any more business from the rebuilder( my friend) or my friends and family. You however, are honestly one of the good ones.😎

    Hello Wizard. You told the Prius has a CVT just like the Mazdas, etc. The Prius transmission is a e-cvt and it doesn't even have a belt. I don't know why Toyota called it a CVT, because it is a unique system that no other brand uses. BTW, it is a ultra reliable transmission, unlike all the other CVTs.

    • @javiTests
      @javiTests 5 років тому +8

      I was going to say exactly the same. It's true that it's a CVT in the sense it's a Continuously variable transmission but it operates completely different to a normal CVT transmission like the ones in Nissans for example. As you say, it doesn't have a belt and everything is achieved with gears. You can see here how it works: eahart.com/prius/psd/ So I don't think it's fair to compare it with other "normal" CVTs

    • @emeraldages
      @emeraldages 5 років тому +15

      This is true. It's literally a 1 speed planetary. Way simpler than any other auto and why there's literally never been one with a trans issue that I've ever seen.

      I’m really frustrated by mechanics who refer to the Prius transmission as a “CVT” just like in a Nissan or Subaru. It’s two electric motors and a planetary gear set. Plus very clever software. It’s NOTHING like a Nissan or Subaru.

      Update: I got a second opinion and found a local transmission shop(mr transmission) and the owner made some calls. He was able to determine that my issue was the transmissions computer, and not the transmission itself. Removed the computer, shipped it to another shop and had it rebuilt, shipped back and reinstalled. $1100 and my car works perfectly again. Mid 2000’s Nissans have this problem apparently as well.

Now a year and 20k miles later it is having problems again. Fixing to take it back to the shop who installed it.

  • @dgurevich1

    The common wisdom where I live is to just get rid of the car and cut your losses.
    Even if it's under warranty, just let them fix it, then trade it in. It's not worth the hassle and the risk because 95% of transmission jobs end in failure. Even replacing with a new one almost always fails in some near future. I knew a guy that had a new golf mk. 6, German built. He went through 6 gearboxes before he finally gave up and traded it back.

      My main issue with them is inconsistenty. ECUs haven't been well programed for them yet. My mom's 1.5l turbo honda cr-v is just not right. Part of the issue is that the turbo kicks on and off at the wrong times. The other issue is RPMs. The car waits for boost to accelerate rather than just giving more RPM.

    It is now the first Tuesday of March 2021. The Car Wizard will hopefully do the next, all-new, buy this, not that video on vehicles with CVT/eCVT transmissions, which will be this afternoon. The Lexus CT200h is the number one vehicle to buy, because it has an eCVT transmission, any model year. They are very reliable and they are very fuel-efficient. My church pastor owns one and it is a very good vehicle. It is similar to a Toyota Prius, which the Car Wizard's daughter used to own. The other vehicle not to buy would be the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, because they styling looks hideous and it does not look like a crossover to most vehicular buyers and myself. It still does have the CVT transmission, compared to the newer Lancer sedan, but it requires a lot of maintenance to keep the vehicle, as reliable as possible. Thank you very much and good luck to the next upload video from the Car Wizard.

    If you do get your automatic transmission fluid changed, be sure they use the right fluid. I had mine changed with the filter as a requirement for my rebuilt warranty, and right after I did, the transmission made some horrible noises upon starting out after starting it up and it didn't shift as smoothly as it did before.
    So I later decided to change fluid myself, by disconnecting a line from the radiator and directing it into a drain pan. Then as the engine was idling in neutral I added new fluid to replace what I saw draining into the pan. When it ran clean I shut the motor off and then topped it off.
    No more noises. I think they might have used the wrong fluid. Mine took the PLUS 4, not the regular kind.
    Years later it began shifting hard and I changed the fluid, and then again not long after. I used the cheap synthetic kind (+4) and on the second time around, it shifted like new again, so I believe in clean fluid. Maybe some old fluid stays in the torque converter or something. The double flush worked for me. Shifts and sounds like a new transmission now.

    I worked at a car dealer for Fords in 1978. One mechanic specialized in automatic transmissions, 1 fixed electrical gremlins, most did general repair, and the lowest guy did exhaust pipes and brakes. At 19 I was even lower- cleaning, running errands, changing tires. My advice for older vehicles- see the Carsthatlast series on UA-cam. For the last 8 years or new, go to a library and study the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine. Hoovie uses the get it cheap because it is known to be unreliable, hope it is an easy fix at first, then have several to lower the miles per year for each one.

    A couple of years ago, I've had a catastrophic transmission failure - It started whining in 5th gear around 80-100km/h, almost as if the car had a turbocharger (but it was connected to the transmission, not the engine rpms). One day I was driving somewhere, around 200km away, and I stopped at a rest stop to get a coffee. I rolled to my parking space in neutral, using the rest of the momentum, then stopped the car and put it in first. When I wanted to continue driving, I couldn't get out of "first", only that the car also didn't go forwared when engaging the clutch - it started stalling just as if the parking brake was on (which it wasn't). I called a tow truck, and the car could only be moved with the clutch pedal pressed in. After mesing around some more, the gear shifter was free, so it could move into every shift position - only the transmission didn't shift gears, it was still stuck in 5th. The end of it was, I got it towed home to a shop nearby (I'm talking about 300m away from my home, so an easy walking distance), and then I ordered a used transmission from a car that got scrapped for 300€, had it replaced, and the car still drives today. That was quite the adventure! ;)

I decided to go over there And have a look at it again a few days later I started it up and it drove fine And the fluid wasn’t foamy but still dirty. I decided to change his fluid and filter for him and that transmission was so nasty the foam was coming from the pump sucking so hard trying to get that nasty fluid through the filter. It had a quarter of an inch of metal dust In the pan and I used five cans of brake cleaner to get it all cleaned up including the valve body. The truck shifted like new again after changing the fluid he drove it for three years after that until he sold it and it had about 240,000 miles on it. So there’s proof not to keep trying to drive it as soon as it started slipping he pulled over which eventually quit pulling it all but after it sat for a little while it would go back to working fine but he wouldn’t drive it until we found out what was wrong and that saved him a lot of money. I never imagined it would last any amount of time after that but it did great.

    The Nissan Jatco CVT transmission design is a fraught design. One of the pulleys had a shaft with machined grooves which had steel ball bearings running up and down it like a linear bearing to allow it to open and close. Of course the grooves flog out and the shaft spins and pops the hydraulic seal... end of power transmission.

My old Toyota pickup would slip if you put your foot down in 5th on the highway, solution, shift to 4th or drive 85 down the hill and slow up to 65 going uphill lol. New Honda CR-V issues; CVT transmission problems, differences in motor older oils vs newer oils, replacing rear brake pads with electronic parking breaks. Has the engineering changed that much? AWD vehicles don’t specify how much torque can be applied to one particular wheel before the computer switches it to another wheel. Most city people don’t understand that it is not a true 4X4 transmission. So, how much torque can one wheel handle. Issues like this are not posted anywhere. Even my car manuals don’t state this. I would like to see these types of videos. While your European car issues are an eye opening shocker, SUV’s are the most purchased vehicles in the USA. Some vehicles have turbochargers. I understand that is another unclear maintenance issue. Old engineering vs new engineering, is that better??? Or is it another money pit?

    So long as you know HOW to drive a CVT and not treat it like a rock crusher most of them will last a long time. I have 140k on a CVT in my 2014 Subaru Forester XT. I'm under no illusion that I'm not going to be off road crawling around with it or drag racing with it either. Many of the failures are due to operators simply not knowing what and what not to do with a CVT. One of the BIGGEST mistakes owners make is not coming to a complete stop from reverse. That alone will trash a CVT in fairly short order. A CVT is nothing more than sheeves. Almost every snowmobile has a CVT. They're not that complicated...just different.
