Eye and face protection is a must. Those tiny wires will break off and end up embedded in your face. I know.
Did that today with the wire wheel on the bench grinder. Wire shot right into my hand. I never wear gloves around that kind of stuff. Safer not to.
@@MrClarkisgod I pulled one of those wires out of my face. It could have just as easily ended up in my eye ball.
In youre legs too lol
Also wearing a respirator is important, breathing in all that rust is not good for your lungs
When restore cast iron I use those wire wheels. Definitely need a face shield
Thanks man, don't have a dad to teach me stuff so I'm in a spot where I can rebuild an engine but had no clue what tool to use to get rust off metal. 😂
i feel you bro i have him but he dont like helping me
Wow nice results. Can't wait to try on my Dakota.
Thats the best underbody I have ever seen
Great video Kenneth, it was exactly what I was looking for to do some work on my Toyota Chaser. Hopefully I can find the same products in the UK
if your diff gets hot enough to catch on fire... you have a major problem!
You think this paint
would hold up in ny winter salted roads if I clean often and don’t drive that much ?
Man I can't believe the HATERS IN THE COMMENTS looks good brotha looks great actually
I thought so
POR-15 Would have been a 1000x better choice than any other product. Great video and informative.
Agreed
I disagree, I have used POR-15 on an rusted free chassis and axle and it peeled off. POR-15 hold well on rusted rough surface. The other disadvantage for POR-15, it also holds on dirt , dirt does not wash off as easy as paint.
@info411 100% agree. I grind the rust off, add phospho rust converter, wipe clean with alcohol, and then use chassis and rollbar paint. Top that with lanolin or old oil. If you spray 1-2x a year you'll get no returning rust.
@@mixmax6027You hit the nail on the head. Ospho is the best stuff on the market, relative to value. Grind off what you can, wire brush, spray with brake cleaner, soak with Ospho (can even do multiple applications over several days since it’s like water and will drip off easily), then wipe clean and paint with rust oleum enamel. Can even do Eastwood rust encapsulator if you wanted to get super crazy
@@mixmax6027old oil is useless, see project farm's video
Id return the cover, looks amazing as is!
Cover was a little to cheap to be good. Paint is still fine but the cover has rust. I'm going to powder coat it
If you live in Canada like I do, the only way to get rid of rust for good is sandblasting and epoxy paint. Any other way, and the rust underneath your fresh paint will push your paint off within 2 years.
thanks. my buddy is going to do 2 part epoxy on my obs frame for $200. pretty stoked. now to strip bed and blast it all. very rusty
uhh no. if you starve the rust of oxygen and water it wont magically start to grow again
Awesome, I’m doing an axle swap on my OBS with super duty axles. Will be sure to make them look sexy before they go under
Nice
Great vid gonna do this to mine on 93 L it’s got old wasp nest on diff cover but just ordered a new aluminum ford racing one
Great job, good things to know.
Good video, wish you would've shown the painting process
on my to do list, you did great 👍
I'm about to drop my axles and have everything powder coated. The 08 rear diff cover is a great up grade if you haven't done it yet.
At some point I may swap D60s in and if I do that i'll get them from the junkyard and have them blasted and powdercoated and fitted with 5.13 gears
Gr8 Job just what I was Looking 4
I hope you still have your vision after its done!
Nope my eyes fell out
Definitely need to do this to my OBS f350!
I use, used motor oil. Fastes way to get rid of it usefull 2 times a year. Need to replace oil anyway.
certainly doesnt rust when it has a good thick oil/dust coating
Finally a decent diy
Nice video, well explained. Just curious to know if you've ever tried POR-15 for these kind of projects?
Not yet! maybe next time i hear good things
Undercoating can do more harm than good. If water gets trapped under it rust will form and you won’t see it since it’s under the coating. It’s better to wash the frame and suspension regularly instead.
Fluid film or crc corrosion inhibitor is better
Por-15 Properly applied along with regular undercarriage washing and the frame will outlast you
Lefty loosely , righty tightly .
That looks really good!
thanks it came out good
Looks good from here buddy
Thanks
I need to do this on my 83 Squarebody.
The paint still looks great, the only thing that sucks is the cheap chrome diff cover is rusty (admittedly tho its outside 24/7 and we always drive it on the beach and snow). If I had to do it over i would probably find a steel cover and paint it or powdercoat it.
Nice video good job man!
Very informative.
Great video
Looks awsome!
Thanks
Ive seen alot of mixed review fpr undercoating spray is it safe to use or is thier a safe oil based spray to use
Thank you. Nice job 👍
Does the paint rust-proof the parts like Wool Wax or finish fluid products?
Nice job
Does that rustoleum kill the rust?
the 2X paint is just as good
out of interest, how long did that literal repaint last?
Its still there and still black. I don't really go under there and clean with a rag when I wash it so it always have a little dirt on it.
How many coats of each ?
I did 2
That grinder kits sucks ..the wires fly off and get stuck in skin ...no fun ...don't cheap out on tools
Looks great. How many cans of paint did you use?
1 primer 1 paint
@@buildsomethingstupid1736 Nevermind on my previous comment just needed to read haha
Niiiiiice!
where are you located?
RIP steering damper...
It was actually bad before I did this. I have since replaced it, but it only takes 5 minutes so I didn't bother with a video. In hindsight I probably should have made one because its kind of a common issue with the steering wheel feeling jerky after coming out of a sharp turn.
Was that axle on a brand new car
no, you idiot. He says in the video its a 16 year old car.
@@jacobschings2124 whoa there buddy, be nice to Sabrina!
@@jacobschings2124 😂😂😂
😍😍
Anything you should NOT paint ?
Your rims and tires lol
There are easier types of wire brush power tools to handle than what your using-such as a cordless drill-and also a pneumatic die grinder tool works well too-🙂
I like to live dangerously
Did you had to sand paper after grinding?
no. sanding it would create scratches and is unnecessary after wire wheeling. the wire wheel is an understated tool.
righty tighty lefty loosen
How did it hold up?
The black still looks great, the cheap chrome cover looks like poo
😄Did u paint the shaft of that steering damper?
No why?
@@buildsomethingstupid1736 Oh it just looked like it in the vid
@@beachboardfan9544 sadly I realized after I made this video I didn't really give a good look after I finished and put the diff cover on. So the thumbnail is the only "done" pic.
You'll get about a year from rattle can. Been there too
Chemical rust removal gets more rust out from nooks and crannies and less work
Never used it but I'm going to try that at some point
Why don't u have on ur face shield sir?
I like to live dangerously
You need a mask on
All that shit getting your lungs not good
Breathing rust turns you into IRONMAN.
Iron-oxidationman
Don't worry I held my breath
hope youre wearing a mask because you're brushing off all the rust into the air lol
Pussy
Rust is a hoax.
*Inhales deeply
I'm fat and lazy too much work
lol
wear a mask .....
No, never wear a mask when wire wheeling rust. You need the rust to get into your lungs to help replenish your blood's iron supply and give you superhuman powers. Ancient lost secret.
@@sibco96 🤣😂
*Inhales deeply
I can smell it lol
*inhales deeply
Unplug that shit before you change the disk🤣🤣
Where's the fun in that
At leas your lungs are full of rust now
No worries I coughed it out
Quick n easy ... not really !
Bro for me that's good enough for show quality lol but you guys are that is junk lol
Yeah I thought it looked good, but some people are really particular
Surprised you don't use Rustoleum Rust Reformer instead of the Primer. This way the rust doesn't rot from the inside out!
I just bought a few cans of that what do I do use that first then Do buy sumthin else to go over that?
Ill have to try that next time I paint something rusty!
if I am about to do this. should I grind down with sander, use the reformer first, then what??
How much was the cover?
Like $40 but I don't recommend it unless you can garage your truck. My "chrome" is all rusty already
Dangitall now my front axial needs some wire wheeling :-) :-) it looks better then new l was surprised plus thank for the paint tip
Haha I started doing it then afterwards I was like .... wow that actually looks great
how many cans of each were needed?
