Loved the edit man. The phone screen overlay was great, and I know it took you forever to pull off, so great job! I have found the biggest advantage of the higher resolution to be, as you said major zoom in, but also if you want to add noise reduction to the image. In DaVinci Resolve if you have the 6k pixels at your disposable it amazing how much better the noise reduction works. Also I find tracking to be more accurate!! This is my experience using the GH6 5.7k vs downsampled 4k. So basically if your going to be doing any VFX or extreme zooming with the footage I do think its easily worth it to shoot in the higher resolution.
I experimented with raw 5.9k on my S5 and the sharpness you gain vs 4k is insane ... IF you want to zoom in post 3x or more. For everything less than that it was really hard to see any advantage.
I remember when 4K really started kicking off, I'd record in 4K and down squeeze it into 1080p timeline. Which made the image just a little more crispy. I now film in 6k and down squeeze it into 4K timeline. It definitely isn't as much of a jump as before, but I find that I notice a little more detail and I shoot in open gate on my GH6. So I have extra room to work with.
the only 6k that is practical is 3:2 open gate format so we can crop into 19:6 & 9:16 without losing 4k pixels. Vertical videos are here to stay regardless anyone's opinion towards them.
Great video Sam. You made a big effort to create the video inside the phone screen to explain benefit of 6k re cropping. You make it very easy for me to understand the benefit. Thankyou.
Sam! This edit is just remarkable. Smooth as butter. Love the jacket sequence & and the over-acting in B-roll always kills me lol. Definitely tryna get more like you this year!!
Brilliant. I wasn’t too fussed about 6k until I wrapped my head around just how much bigger it is. Certainly lots of scope for punching in and recomposing!
Thanks Em. Yeh it’s great if you need the extra resolution for cropping etc. just gives ya that extra freedom. Even if you just need to reframe slightly 👌🏻
Nice video as always! 😃 As an amateur wildlife videographer, an affordable 6k is a little dream: things happens only once so cropping is a huge advantage and I can have 2 different angles of view with just one camera (that's why I use a lot the 6k photo on the Panasonic g9). Also, I'm a solo shooter so during a documentary is really nice to being able to crop a little bit in post just to make things more dynamic! But, in the end, Italian tv is still 1920x1080 so even the 4k is big enough
Editors will prefer 6k over 4k for cropping/frame headroom, stabilizing (does crop), transition effects etc in a 4k composition. Larger resolution is welcome for multiplatform editing, 3:2 6k open gate footage in vertical composition for social media platforms that use vertical video. However, 8k would give you more headroom so people might skip 6k and upgrade when 8k cameras arrive.
As a visual effects artist, I think 6K should be reserved for VFX shots and green screen shots. Most movies you see in theaters were shown in 2K for many years. Only a handful are shown in 4K today. There is no such thing as "future proofing" yourself by being able to shoot in 6K or 8K. Don't let content creators fool you into thinking you need high resolutions. You don't.
That's just not true that only a handfuil of movies are shown in 4k. We are in the streaming era. Netflix requires all new productions to be 4k. That's a tremendous amount of films. Also Arri now switched to 4k for their latest camera. 5 years ago this comment would still mostly be true, but we're now entering an era where acquisation in 2k or below will be the minority almost certainly. Projector technology really is the final thing holding back 4k being the norm across the entire spectrum.
I use 6K a lot with the S1, very nice for cropping and also for the full 3:2 look. I prefer to use the S5 but I really like the 6K on my S1. Now the S5II has 6K, better IBIS and Phase detect AF, I don't need the S1 anymore. So true about the colors, I really like what I've seen from your videos, the GH6 and the S5II have the best colors, can't wait to receive this S5 II.
You are just making me want to buy that camera so badly. I am looking for a nice affordable camera that I can still take on to travel easily. Man I know what to save my money for.
That Lumix S5II is looking like a beast of a camera with the 6k video! Perfect for shooting mixed content. Definitely the one to buy atm! Great video Sam!
Nice socks. I couldn’t tell a difference at all with those two apart from the 6k looked a bit brighter. We’ve come a long way on UA-cam since 240p haven’t we 😂 Hopefully we will get to a future where nothings compressed. Really great video explaining stuff well yet again, and shot really great. You’ve learned well young Padawan.
TOP TIP. Add some "cinema" grain from Red Giant, for example, and even when youtube compresses your video you won't see as much banding. Banding is generally about bit rate. 6k benefits include being able to stand up to heavier color grading without crashing the image. You won't see a massive file size difference until you start shooting RAW; great files but massive.
No I don't think so huge files etc but good to have I have 6k 60fps RAW on my Canons and have hardly used it but it is awesome to have it in such a well priced camera like the Lumix ! Still thinking of changing 😜 another ticketyboo video buddy !
There's no 6K 60fps on the Lumix S5 II. It shoots a max of 6K 30fps and 4K 30fps unless you shoot in APSC crop mode, then you can get 4K 60fps but nothing above 30fps in 6K and nothing above 30fps if you record externally to USB (with a paid $200 upgrade or wait for the Lumix S5 IIX to come out for the same $200 more)
This is a great video, I knew from the beginning that camera B was the 6k footage it just looked brighter and more detailed to me. I edit with the M1 Pro so I should be good with 6k I’m an artist & going to use the camera for music videos and in studio videos so thanks for making this & mentioning vertical video
Pro-tip, if you add slight noise to the image in static areas(I'll sometimes add it to only the blue channel), UA-cam's compression won't give you that same banding
Thanks Sam - great info as usual. But I don't really see the advantage of open gate. If you have to film a object and it needs to be in frame from top to bottom, that object will need to be within your 16:9 frame markers and 9:16 frame markers, so you may as well shoot landscape (16:9) with portrait markers (9:16). Its to difficult to judge from the open gate ratio. 😆 Hope that makes sense.
Yh immediately I could see the difference between 4k and 6k even through UA-cam compression, 6k is sharper, however doesn't make 4k useless if I had to s5ii I'd still be shooting 4k or even 1080p most of the time because of file sizes
Pixel peeper here, cannot see a difference on my 48" OLED. I'm sure that like on the GH6, internal and external ProRes will actually look more detailed and textured. :)
4-perf 35mm's digital equivalent is roughly 6k isn't it? Kinda crazy this camera can get up there. I found there to be only a slight noticeable difference in the comparison but I wonder how it looked on for you before getting rendered out and compressed.
THAT was a fucking good video @Sam holland ! Clear, fast and easy understanding ! Only minor issue is your export to youtube, banding so much ! I don't have this issue so try H265 main10 and you will not get any banding anymore. ;-)
UA-cam supports 5k and a handful of monitors are 5k or 6k nowadays. That's worth a mention. If the XDR display by Apple ever became mainstream, then I think we'd see great use. But of course, not mainstream atm.
I can clearly see a better image in 6k....it is amazing how better it looks. All my clients ask nowadays for 6k delivery 👍😊 I only shoot in 6k V log never used 1080p lol
Worked on a few film and tv shows whereby we still deliver most of it in 4k/2k. Most of the plates are shot within 4k so don't really see why people are pushing for 6k or 8k when the industry isn't ready yet. Maybe for marketing and ego boost, yeah, go for it mate :)
The other s5ii will have support for recording in all types of format to an external ssd, since u edit from an external ssd you should get that camera instead
I'm leaving Sony and switching to the Lumix S5 II. I adore that camera, that's why I ask you for that file in 1080p since I shoot a lot in 1080p, and no one makes videos on UA-cam of the Lumix in 1080p quality, I haven't seen any quality reviews. 1080p from the s5 ii please
I had to pause it and zoom in a bit but I could certainly tell there was finer detail in Camera B so I assumed it was the 6K camera. Either that or the sensor was just reading cleaner. Guess I was correct.
4K is here to stay for a long time (actually UHD, but thats a different story.) Just to the human eye limitations and diminished returns. Thus, 6K is the perfect resolution for Mastering in UHD. (Again, UHD will be the standard for the foreseeable future.) You may need a little, crop, digital zoom, digital pan, special effect, digital stabilization and plain old debrayering. Oh, and the 3:2 mode maybe great for anamorphic ..
I have links in the description. Well worth considering. Also check out that colour grading video I link at the end because there’s a conversion LUT that is incredible! 🤩🎉🎥
I guest all of them 🍾 The 6k was a bit sharper, by just the 4k is oversampling too right? So it is great too 💪🏾 Can't wait to get my S5IIx, are you going to cover that in the future too?
I do remember debates 4-5 years ago, when everybody was saying - 4 k is not worth it, cause you can upscale full hd footage and so on...now it all starts again..
The difference is A. Cropping B. Downsampling. C. Better resolution when defishing if you wanna do VR180 stuff :) which is why the Canon R5C and the RF Dual Fisheye lens exist :P
Your illustration for vertical video using Open Gate is not as strong as you might think. You can still use standard 4K 16:9 and have plenty of head room for video to be viewed on a phone. The challenge is you have to frame your shots for it and make sure you have that head room. Its hard to do on a dinky screen and shooting in Open Gate does help with your composition. So it is useful for those that post that type of video. But again, 4K 10:9 does still work if you do it right.
Video files are 200 megabits per second and SanDisk extreme shown here is 300 megabytes per second. literally 12 times faster than necessary to read and write these files.
To me the question is: how are people watching my content? Basically no-one has a 4k monitor and many consume YT on their phone where 4k doesn't matter. So 6k is cool but, no, it's not needed.
what windows laptop do you recommend when video editing the highest resolution 6k of this? or what minimum laptop specs should i consider editing this 6k?
Hey Sam! Im very new in video. And I bought a s5ii but I really don't understand the Record quality options. Why do I read that I have to use open gate and they say that it's 5,9k 4:3, but I think that's old information (and info about the GH6?) and the s5ii doesn't has that. So with my logic I say that 6k 3:2 on the s5ii is open gate right? But then I also see that it isn't 422 but 420 and that im losing stuff (detail I think). So why shouldn't I use the 4k or c4k (Don't know why there is a c4k) 422 10bit etc and then get more detail. Im just confused and maybe you can make a video about this. It would also be great to get more videos about the s5ii and go really in depth about it and what the best lenses are etc etc. Great videos, helps me a lot! :D What im also thinking is that I maybe can shoot 6k 420 10 bit for videos that I will use on different sociale medias and shoot in 4k 422 when I know I want to do a lot in post for colors. Im just confused :( :D I Also know you say things about the 6k 3:2 in your video, so Im gonna use that until I can find more info about why I should and shouldn't use it :DDD
Hey! love your video so much entertainment here, but i think 6k is useless most of the viewers use a phone to watch UA-cam so 1080p is more than enough for that. The content that youtubers create barely worth the 4k, more important is the content than the image quality. Even for clients. You should go back to Canon, R6 mark II is another story.
This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I honestly couldn’t watch this video. The resolution was so bad it was giving me a headache. Can you please put effort in and at least film minimum 8k. I personally don’t film anything lower than 12k which is why I use the blackmagic 12k for all my home videos and family stuff. I’ll come back next time and hopefully you will get the resolution right. I was getting a headache watching this. I had to squint just to be able to make out what I’m looking at.
Hmm.... Lumix S5 II: 6K 4:2:0, max 30 fps except at 1080p. Sony FX30 4K 4:2:2: 120 fps, better auto focus and $400 less than the S5 IIX. Yes, the FX30 has an APSC sensor and no EVF, but with frame rates like that, it's kind of a no-brainer.
You are very wrong! The Sony FX30 shot in 4K 60fps, not 120fps. Sony is APSC and Panasonic is full frame. Panasonic is about $300 cheaper. Panasonic has the best IBIS. Panasonic support 2 cards. On Panasonic you can shoot open gate for vertical video too. Panasonic is by far a better option.
@@DARKLYLIT You're right! I have only seen the top of the specifications. About the price, I don’t know where you live but here in Spain the Sony cost 2300€ and the Panasonic 1900€, body only for both. For me personally, 120fps is too much. In general I never use more than 60fps. Almost almost all my projects are shoot in 5K 25fps or 4K 50fps when I want slow motion. I also can shoot up to 180fps at 1080p with my Panasonic GH5M2 but never used.
@@AurelianIrimia That's interesting that Sony is more expensive than Panasonic in Europe. It's the opposite in North America. US prices are: Lumix GH5 IIX= $2198 Sony FX30=$1798. Check out DSLR Videoshooter review. Panasonic is definitely improving but there are still bugs in the autofocus, especially at higher frame rates.
Come on. Who is rocking 6K monitors? Most people are still using 1080p. I use dual 4K but a 6K file on a 4k monitor will be........4K! Plus most young folks who really don't understand this are looking at their content on a damn phone. 6K is for professionals that actually have a display that can represent each pixel honestly. If your target is UA-cam/tiktok/insta/fb folks....for chrissakes, 720P will work for these handheld devices. If you are on tiktok using a 6K you are a fool. if you are a serious filmmaker then 6K will be a clear improvement over 4k as long as you have a display larger than say 60" diagonal, not a damn iPhone14.
I never really understood how if you’re watching on a 4K monitor how 6k could look better 🤔 If a tree falls in the woods in 6K and no one is there to record it did it look better than 4K ? 😂
Oh well, it is pretty obvious isn't it? This video is flawed. You choose between 4K(WhateverBitrate Long GOP or ALL i) and 6k(200mpbps). I mean...if you chose 4k ALL intra 400MBPS or 150MBPS versus 6k 200MBPS, you cannot possibly expect a huge difference in quality. it can even be worse at times, the 6k, because it is 200MPBS. BUT...if you go the other route and choose 6K/5.9K RAW at 1.2GPBS or 2GPBS(whatever the high number is), then that is another story my friend. compare that and see. Maybe change the title to - 6k vs 4k INTERNAL for more accuracy. I have seen 6k RAW downscaled to 4k on S5IIX and it is a world of difference.
Could you tell a difference?
Only at 1000x zoom on the baseball like you said.

You should give us some of your lumix LUT
I have links in the description. Well worth considering. Also check out that colour grading video I link at the end because there’s a conversion LUT that is incredible! 🤩🎉🎥
I AM ITEREST FOR THIS CAMERA BUT I WANT TO TRY IN FULL HD BECAUSE IN CYPRUS WE USES THIS FORMAT IN SONY FX30 IS NO GOOD
YOU TRY
I picked B for 6 K but honestly it was more of a gut feeling than anything visually perceptible.
I guest all of them 🍾
The 6k was a bit sharper, by just the 4k is oversampling too right? So it is great too 💪🏾
Can't wait to get my S5IIx, are you going to cover that in the future too?
I do remember debates 4-5 years ago, when everybody was saying - 4 k is not worth it, cause you can upscale full hd footage and so on...now it all starts again..
The 6k is huge. 6k 3x2 is actually TRIPLE the resolution of 4K!!! So even if you set your timeline proxy to quarter size, it’s still close to 4k lol
Good video. How long did it take you to edit this?
Thank you. 2 days to edit. 🙏🏻🎥
Sometimes 6k look worse, because of different focusing. It kinda weird to do this comparison with blur and with no cropping image
Personally I feel as if I’d rather get an atmos ninja and I prefer to manual focus but then again some situations need a good auto
The difference is A. Cropping B. Downsampling. C. Better resolution when defishing if you wanna do VR180 stuff :) which is why the Canon R5C and the RF Dual Fisheye lens exist :P
I knew it!
I got them all right!
Great video, how you finding the studio display for editing and colour grading??
what lens do u recommend with S5 body for travel and B roll
Hi. Honestly the kit lens is so good! 20-60. Or the 16-35 too. But I prefer the kit lens to be honest 🙏🏻🤩🎥
To me the question is: how are people watching my content? Basically no-one has a 4k monitor and many consume YT on their phone where 4k doesn't matter. So 6k is cool but, no, it's not needed.
why 4k colors are better than 6k? my computer glitch?
what windows laptop do you recommend when video editing the highest resolution 6k of this? or what minimum laptop specs should i consider editing this 6k?
What im also thinking is that I maybe can shoot 6k 420 10 bit for videos that I will use on different sociale medias and shoot in 4k 422 when I know I want to do a lot in post for colors. Im just confused :( :D
I Also know you say things about the 6k 3:2 in your video, so Im gonna use that until I can find more info about why I should and shouldn't use it :DDD
What is the point of this comparison, if both videos were rendered in 4K? And Canon has been doing 8K for years now.
thanks for the video. Did you shoot the 6k in V-log in camera or can you?
My Question is, since the S5 Crops in when filmed at 6k, do you lose resolution?
Honestly I am sticking with 1080p..😀
hi sam does the s5 smallrig cage fit s5ii??
Hi. No it doesn’t. There’ll be a new one released soon
Love my S5iix! Is there any way to shoot 6K 422 externally? Is it even worth it to shoot 6K 420 or do you think 4K 422 is better?
Should we stick For hd?
I like 4K. Better dynamic range and less noise. 👌🏻🎥
Is it worth getting a zv-e10 to start with?
Are the Long GOP files easy to edit on the s5ii?
Second 😉 🎉
🥈
Don't you need a 6k TV to watch it?
Think about youtube. We don’t need 6k. We still satisfied with 1080
I can confirm the thumbnail is accurate - 4K is so blocky 😂😂😂
I want 12k now 😉
Here my sony a6400 struggles with 4k 😑
I couldnt tell a difference for content creation 4k is still best 👍
4k looks better, why?
how we can spot the difference when video is in 4k not 6k :D
On my iPhone, it didn’t even matter. 😂😂😂
Still using gh5 with 6k open gate haha
Hey! love your video so much entertainment here, but i think 6k is useless most of the viewers use a phone to watch UA-cam so 1080p is more than enough for that. The content that youtubers create barely worth the 4k, more important is the content than the image quality. Even for clients. You should go back to Canon, R6 mark II is another story.
Here I am recording 1080p in 2023 😂
💪🏻
This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I honestly couldn’t watch this video. The resolution was so bad it was giving me a headache. Can you please put effort in and at least film minimum 8k. I personally don’t film anything lower than 12k which is why I use the blackmagic 12k for all my home videos and family stuff. I’ll come back next time and hopefully you will get the resolution right. I was getting a headache watching this. I had to squint just to be able to make out what I’m looking at.
😂👏🏻
kind a 50-50 somtimes a sometimes b seemed to be better. so i think there is no real difference!
Sorry, I don't have a Telegram account
He’s so beautiful
Me watching them at 480p 🥹
The highest quality mines goes up to it is 4K has anybody else ran into this?!
I guessed right opposite :D
Me watching this on 480p 😂
😋
@@AurelianIrimia Look up the specs. S5 II maximum 30fps in 4K. FX30 120fps in 4K. Sony is $400 less and better auto focus.
@@DARKLYLIT You're right! I have only seen the top of the specifications. Normally it starts from the top with the highest number of frames, Sony has put it at the bottom of the list, that's why I haven't seen it.

I have seen the specifications of Panasonic and it records 4K 60fps but in APSC mode, and in full frame up to 6K but no more than 30fps.
@@DARKLYLIT the price I give you is for the Lumix S5II, not S5X. Lumix S5X is not available for now, for preorder.
I never really understood how if you’re watching on a 4K monitor how 6k could look better 🤔
If a tree falls in the woods in 6K and no one is there to record it did it look better than 4K ?
